Subaru Legacy 2001 problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

- Summary: PURCHASED VEHICLE IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND DROVE IT BACK TO NORTHERN KENTUCKY. IT PRODUCED APPROXIMATELY 380 MILES ON ONE TANK OF FUEL. NOTE: IT WAS WELL INTO THE 50-60 F RANGE OUTSIDE WHILE DRIVING DURING THAT TIME. SUBSEQUENT FILL-UPS IN NORTHERN KENTUCKY (WITH OUTSIDE TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 10-30 F) PRODUCED 160-225 MILES IN-TOWN. I EXPERIENCED A VERY STRONG, RAW FUEL ODOR IN THE PASSENGER CABIN. IT WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC AND THEY FOUND "NOTHING WRONG." THIS OF COURSE, DOES NOT MEAN THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. THE FUEL LINES WERE CHECKED AND TIGHTENED EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE NEITHER LOOSE NOR WORN. AFTER READING THE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FROM OTHER OWNERS, IT SEEMS THAT SUBARU OWES ME AND MANY OTHERS A RECALL. TODAY IS ABOUT 14 F OUTSIDE AND I DROVE THE SUBARU 16 MILES. THE FUMES WERE SO UNBEARABLE I HAD TO PULL OVER AND WAIT FOR THEM TO SUBSIDE. THIS SEEMS LIKE NOT ONLY AN EMISSIONS VIOLATION, BUT ALSO A FIRE AND HEALTH HAZARD. *TR

If you do your research, you'll discover the Legacy L has an excellent crash test rating. Additionally, driving the Legacy L with a manual transmission is a fun experience. Although it's not a fast car, it boasts the same mass-to-horsepower ratio as a MINI Cooper base model. Furthermore, the Legacy L only requires 87 octane gas, which can save you money. Despite its spacious interior that can accommodate 6' bookshelves (one at a time), it still drives like a car. I can attest to its performance in the snow, where the AWD system truly shines.

I really love this car! I've owned it since 2005, after having my previous car for 2/3 years. I had to get a new engine at 80,000 miles (I didn't know about the head gasket), but even now at 149,000 miles, I still choose to drive this car every day. It does cost a bit in fuel and there are some regular niggles that need addressing, but with the comfort pack, I could sit in this car all day and be perfectly comfortable.

I bought my Subaru in February 2001 and traded in a Taurus for it. I absolutely love it! What a difference it has made. I had a Subaru before my Taurus, but I really didn't like the Taurus. MY SUBARU is fantastic. Even in 2004, with less than 30,000 miles on it, I have NEVER had a problem with it. I have a 5-speed manual and I absolutely love it. I prefer it over the automatic because you can control your acceleration better. It is really peppy with the 5-speed! It handles snow and rain wonderfully, and I actually feel like I am in a sports car when I drive it. It's a big change from the Taurus, which wasn't great at taking corners. The Subaru handles corners like a sports car and handles bad weather better than most SUVs!!

Our Subaru has over 30k miles and we are still loving it. We were debating between the wagon or a minivan to haul our 3 kids. We also looked at the Passat wagon. The Passat rode smoother, but the price was way too high for comparable features. We are very satisfied with our choice - great price for what you get, decent gas mileage (compared to the minivan anyway), and enough room for the kids and their stuff - can fit three child seats across the back row. I would recommend a car top carrier for longer trips. Pros: Reliable, safe, fun to drive, and the AWD can't be beat for winter driving (we live in WI). Cons: Interior quality could be improved, gas mileage seems low for a vehicle its size, needs more pep.

The car is now 22 years old and still running decently. I used the head gasket sealant made by Subaru mixed with the antifreeze and have never had a problem.

We were hoping to get a new Honda Accord or Toyota Camry wagon, but unfortunately, those models were discontinued in the mid-1990s. The car we ended up purchasing was more expensive, around $20,000, compared to the Camry ($16,000) or Accord. Although it is less sturdy and the doors don't close smoothly, we still find it to be a great car. The Legacy does have a lower gas mileage, around 22 mpg, even though it has a standard transmission. This is a bit disappointing for us, especially since our previous car, an 1986 Camry, still got 40 mpg even after 253,000 miles.

Hi there! I recently purchased a Legacy just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with it. The car had 180,000 miles on it when I bought it, and the dealer claimed it would run 280,000 miles easily. However, just today, the rear of my transmission went out without any warning. I'm feeling quite frustrated and disappointed with my purchase. This is my first and last Subaru, and I'm not sure if I'll ever buy another one again.

My car has 230,000 miles on it and has significant rust damage due to its previous location in Pennsylvania. Despite its flaws, I am confident in its reliability as it consistently requires refueling every 180 miles. While its gas mileage may not be ideal, I am satisfied with its performance and will continue to rely on it for my transportation needs.

Firstly, let's talk about the pros: This car can be really fun to drive! You can wind it out in 3rd gear and still be within the national speed limit. When driving hard on wet roads, you can really 'feel' all four wheels working together, which is great! However, there are also some cons to consider. The electric aspect of the car is not great and the build quality leaves something to be desired. After only 41K miles, there are already more squeaks and rattles than my F250 Diesel had after 100K miles. Additionally, the door panels have fallen off and switches have broken. I'm not even sure how the headlights pass DOT standards. Despite these issues, I plan to run this car into the ground, but I don't think I'll be getting another one, not even a WRX.

I have owned my Subaru Legacy for 10 months and unfortunately, it has had to be in the shop 3 times in the last 2 months for various reasons. However, I am confident that the issues will be resolved and my car will perform as expected. While I have experienced some disappointment, I still believe in the quality of Subaru vehicles and will continue to be a loyal customer in the future.
