1994 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 1994 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy, particularly the 1994 model, is known for its reliability and impressive gas mileage. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain issues over time. Here are some common problems reported by owners of the Subaru Legacy 1994:
- Head Gasket Issues: While the first generation Legacy had stellar reliability, the second generation, which includes the 1994 model, has a tendency for head gasket failures. This issue is caused by the coolant becoming pressurized and can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Several model years of the Legacy, including the 1994 model, have struggled with excessive oil consumption. This can lead to increased maintenance costs and the need for more frequent oil changes.
- Infotainment System Errors: Some owners of the 1994 Legacy have reported issues with the infotainment system, including radio controls and display screen freezing or refusing to turn off. While these issues can be frustrating, they are typically covered by warranty.
- Burnt-Out Headlights: Another common issue reported by owners of the Subaru Legacy is burnt-out headlights. This can be a safety hazard and may require frequent replacement of the headlight bulbs.
- Engine Failure: In rare cases, the 1994 Legacy may experience engine failure, which can be a costly repair. This issue is typically associated with loud knocking noises and vibrations before failure.
While these issues can be concerning, it's important to note that the Subaru Legacy has a reputation for reliability and many owners have reported few or no issues with their vehicles. Additionally, many of these issues are covered by warranty and can be addressed by a qualified mechanic.

- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-10
- Fire: 1
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY, DRIVER OBSERVED SMOKE COMING FROM REAR OF VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER EXITED SAFELY, AND OBSERVED FLAMES COMING FROM THE AREA UNDER THE REAR OF THE CAR (STATION WAGON BODY, AWD MODEL) ABOVE THE DIFFERENTIAL AND NEAR THE GAS TANK. RESPONDERS QUENCHED THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS EXAMINED AND FOUND THAT THE WIRING FOR THE FUEL PUMP HAD THE INSULATION MELTED OFF, THE FUEL PUMP GASKET WAS COMPRIMISED, AND THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF FLAMES HAVING BEEN IN THE AREA. FURTHER INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN SHORT DISTANCES, THE DIFFERENTIAL BECAME "RED HOT". THE AXLE WAS REPLACED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES ON BOTH INTERSTATES AND SECONDARY ROADS, AFTER WHICH THE DIFFERETIAL WAS SEEN SMOKING FROM THE HEAT THAT HAD BUILT UP. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED THE AXLE A SECOND TIME, WITH THE SAME OVERHEATING OBSERVED. IT IS THE MECHANICS' OPINION THAT THE INITIAL FIRE WAS CAUSED BY THE OVERHEATING DIFFERETIAL. FURTHER, HIS RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THE OVERHEATING IS CAUSED BY A FAULTY CLUTCH PACK AND SELENOID IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: WE HAVE A 1994 SUBARU LEGACY. WHEN THE CAR WAS OUT OR WARRANTY, THE DRIVER SIDE RETRACTABLE SHOULDER HARNESS BROKE. WE COMPLAINED TO SUBARU AND THEY FIXED IT AT NO COST TO US IN 1999. IT WASN'T WORKING AGIAN AND WE PAID TO HAVE IT FIXED IN 2000.ABOUT ONE YEAR AGO IT BROKE AGAIN. THE SHOULDER HARNESS WOULD NOT RETRACT. WE WERE TOLD BY SUBARU THEY WOULD NOT HELP US. NOW WE FIND OUT THAT IT IS A TICKETABLE OFFENSE NOT TO HAVE A SHOULDER HARNESS. THERE IS A LAP BLET AND AN AIR BAG. SO WE CALLED SABARU AND THEY TOLD US THEY WOULD BE REPONSIBLE FOR 50% OF THE BILL. WE WENT TO THE SUBARU DEALER YESTERDAY AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE $1140 TO FIX IT. WE FEEL THAT IS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT FOR A SAFETY ITEM. I CALLED THEM BACK AND THEY WILL NOT HELP ME OUT. THIS SAFETY BELT IS POORLY DESIGNED AND THEY HAVE ADMITTED AND REDESIGNED IT IN FUTURE MODELS. OUR BELT AUTOMATICALLY RETRACTS WHEN YOU TURN ON THE CAR AND HAS A CABLE AND A MOTOR. THERE IS ALSO A FEDERAL LAW THAT SAFTEY BELTS ARE GUARENTEED FOR LIFE. EVEN THE LAP BELT ON THIS VEHICLE NEEDS REPLACEMENT AS THE STICHING IS COMING OUT. *AK WE WOULD LIKE SOME HELP IN MALKING SUBARU RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR SAFETY WHILE WE ARE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. This car has been incredibly reliable, even at 160,000 miles. It's still going strong and reaching 200,000 miles is definitely achievable. It's a safe, economical, and dependable car.

I just sold this car, four years later than I had anticipated. When I bought it in '96, my goal was to get four good years out of it and then purchase another used car. I must say, Subaru deserves credit for giving us eight good years with this high quality, dependable car. The engine is a powerful Quad 4 and the luxuries inside the car make it a joy to drive. I have always liked the looks of the '94 in particular, with their stainless steel door handles, one of those little things that make a certain car unique. Don't ever overlook a Subaru. They are one of the most reliable cars on the road and a great buy in used cars.

I got this car last year and it's built like a tank! Although there are some rattles in the doors and tailgate (interior quality is the only area where Subaru trails Toyota and Honda), it rides smoothly and quietly. The 2.2 F4 engine is loud but super smooth through the rev range and hits redline so fast in 1st gear that I don't always shift in time. The shifter is a bit balky, but it may be due to the original clutch. The paint and alloys still look great, and the seat fabric is comfortable. It's an L model, but it's loaded up with heated seats/mirrors, cruise control, and power everything. The AWD has saved my butt at least once (although its weight saps performance and fuel economy). I would recommend the Subaru to anyone wanting to drive something different than those pesky Camrys and Accords.
-
The car has been trouble-free for the first 100,000 miles, with only the rear shocks and front struts needing replacement. Although the AC is starting to fade, the car still looks and rides well.
-
This car rolls on & on... and it's been the most reliable car I've had, right up there with my old Volvo 240. I really think Subaru deserves more recognition for building such rock-solid cars that function so well. Every component is of such high quality... and even almost 10 years later, the styling still looks great. I plan on driving this car until it finally gives up.

Wow, this car has some serious power for its age and humble appearance! The acceleration is excellent. Although the clutch could use some improvement and there are some chronic CV boot/axle problems, overall it's a solid car that you can rely on.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 93 AWD wagon. I've had it for a few years now and put 45K miles on it. It's been such a reliable and safe car to own, until recently when the ECU and Ignitor went out and the car died suddenly. Unfortunately, the replacement cost was $1900, but other than that expensive problem, I've had not one issue with it. Overall, it's been a pleasure to own!
Larue Jakubowski 2024-02-22
I really appreciate this car. It's so reliable and always gets me to where I need to go. The AWD is fantastic, especially during the slippery winters here in MN. Even in -20 degree weather, it starts up without any issues. While I did have to replace the front CV joints twice, the engine has never given me any trouble. The gas mileage was a bit lower than I expected, around 19 mpg in the city, but it's still a fun car to drive even if it's not the fastest.
Rogers Pollich 2024-01-21
This sedan is incredibly reliable, even after being in an accident it still drives well. While the performance and styling may not be the most impressive, it's a great car for a high school or college student and will get you around without any issues.
