1998 Subaru Legacy problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 1998 Subaru Legacy problems

The Subaru Legacy, produced from 1989 to the present, is known for its reliability and safety features. However, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners of the 1998 Legacy.

Excessive Oil Consumption:
One of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1998 Subaru Legacy is excessive oil consumption.

Headlights Keep Burning Out:
Another common problem reported by owners of the 1998 Subaru Legacy is that the headlights keep burning out.

Radiator Failure:
The radiator is known to fail on the 1998 Subaru Legacy, which can cause the engine to overheat and fail.

Check Engine Light:
The check engine light is a common problem reported by owners of the 1998 Subaru Legacy. This issue is often caused by a cracked oxygen sensor element, which is an easy fix if this is the problem.

Transmission Torque Convertor:
The transmission torque convertor is known to be a weak spot on the 1998 Subaru Legacy. This issue can cause the car to vibrate excessively when accelerating, which can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.

Oil Leaks:
Oil leaks are a common problem reported by owners of the 1998 Subaru Legacy. These leaks are usually located at the camshaft seal or the crankshaft front seal. If there are multiple leaks, it is recommended to replace the timing belt at the same time.

Rapid Battery Drains:
Rapid battery drains are a common problem reported by owners of the 1998 Subaru Legacy. This issue is often caused by the anti-lock brake system (ABS), which is prone to running when it shouldn't be. Subaru is aware of this fault and has issued an improved ABS relay, which can solve this issue.

Non-Functioning Handbrake:
The handbrake has been reported to start needing extra travel and may stop working entirely on the 1998 Subaru Legacy. This issue is caused by fractures and breakages in the electronic handbrake capacitor and the magnetic ring of the sensor. Replacing the handbrake actuator can solve this issue.

CVT Gearbox:
The CVT gearbox on the 1998 Subaru Legacy has a well-known issue with premature wear. This issue affected so many vehicles that Subaru extended the warranty cover on the CVT gearbox to an extra ten years, although they have strict criteria to meet. If not covered by warranty, a new CVT gearbox can be ordered, but installation is a challenging DIY job.

Incorrect Fuel Gauge Reading:
The fuel gauge on the 1998 Subaru Legacy has been reported to give an incorrect reading, making it harder to know how much fuel is in the tank. This issue is caused by a software problem and can be fixed by updating the software.

In summary, while the 1998 Subaru Legacy is known for its reliability and safety features, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners. These include excessive oil consumption, headlights that keep burning out, radiator failure, check engine light issues, transmission torque convertor problems, oil leaks, rapid battery drains, non-functioning handbrakes, CVT gearbox issues, and incorrect fuel gauge readings. It is important to address these issues as soon as possible to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the vehicle.

I PULLED OVER AND LET IT COOL DOWN, FILLED THE RADIATOR BACK UP WITH WATER (IT HAD OVERFLOWED) AND DROVE SLOWLY HOME. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC, HE SUGGESTED WHEN HEARING THE SYMPTOMS THAT IT WAS A BLOWN HEAD GASKET, AND THAT THIS SUBARU ENGINE WAS NOTORIOUS FOR THIS. HE EVEN SUGGESTED A CLASS ACTION SUIT. AFTER HE CHECKED IT OUT, IT WAS INDEED A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. AFTER SOME WEB RESEARCH ON CAR FORUMS, I FOUND SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE WITH EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE. *NM

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-07-06
  • VIN: 4S3BD4352X7
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THE SPEEDOMETER ON MY 1999 SUBARU LEGACY L SEDAN STOPS WORKING AT RANDOM INTERVALS. MY MECHANIC TELLS ME THAT THIS IS CONNECTED TO THE ALSO FAULTY TRANSMISSION AND IS NOT JUST A MINOR SPEED SENSOR PROBLEM. SUBARU DENIES ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THESE PROBLEMS BUT I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND MANY, MANY 1999 SUBARU OWNERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. THE 1999'S HAD A NEW TRANSMISSION THAT IS VERY FLAWED AND WAS CHANGED AGAIN BEFORE THE 2000 RELEASE BECAUSE OF SO MANY PROBLEMS. THIS IS THE SECOND 1999 SUBARU LEGACY I HAVE BOUGHT IN THE PAST 3 MONTHS WITH THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM (I ASSUMED THE FIRST WAS A FLUKE AND THE DEALER TOOK THE CAR BACK). THE CAR HAS 96,000 MILES AND SHOULD NOT NEED A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL AT THIS POINT. I BELIEVE THAT SUBARU IS VERY AWARE OF THESE FAULTS BUT DOESN'T WANT TO FACE THE REPERCUSSIONS OF A CAMPAIGN OR RECALL. I IMPLORE YOU TO LOOK INTO THIS. THESE FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS AND THEIR ASSOCIATED FAILURES(SPEEDOMETER, ETC) ARE A DANGER TO ALL OWNERS. IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE OF SUBARU TO RELEASE AN ENTIRE MODEL YEAR THAT HAS SO MANY EXPENSIVE PROBLEMS TO FIX. *NM

Negative 1998 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Josue Stiedemann 2024-06-20

I purchased a '98 Outback with 71k miles and have owned it for just over a year. Unfortunately, at 80,312 miles, the head gasket failed at the 4th cylinder, resulting in warped heads and a burnt exhaust valve. The total cost of the repair was $1900, but thankfully, I found a trustworthy independent mechanic who repairs at least 12 cars a year. It's worth noting that Subaru is aware of this issue and has started a campaign that includes a coolant additive for any '99 or newer engines. While this is a common problem in all 2.5's, I still have fond memories of the car when I first bought it. However, it now runs differently and has lost much of its charm. I hope Subaru and its dealerships can address this issue in the future.

Our Subaru is a reliable car for all seasons, although it may be a bit underpowered. We have had to replace the front oil seal, both valve cover gaskets, and now the head gasket due to an internal leak. Despite these issues, we are confident in the car's overall reliability. While it is disappointing that Subaru has not addressed this known problem, we still appreciate the car's other features and had planned on purchasing another one to replace our 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The car rides nicely and is very comfortable. It's awesome in the snow!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that we've noticed some issues with your vehicle's transmission at both 92,000 and 122,000 miles. In order to keep your car running smoothly, we recommend replacing the engine valves, power steering valve, and CV boot. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you!

Although this car may seem plain vanilla, its reliability has been outstanding. The only major repair needed was a new alternator at 100,000 miles. Otherwise, the vehicle is still going strong at over 112,000 miles. I do wish they would pep up the styling for this model to compete with the Europeans. Overall, it's been a great car!

In my opinion, this 'midsized' sedan is a heavy beast that you will absolutely love to drive. It is extremely sturdy and performs excellently in all weather conditions, be it rain, sleet, snow or shine. I have personally driven mine for 170,000 miles with only one issue, which was the head gaskets. However, it was not as bad as it sounds as I only had to spend $800 at 120k miles and it has been running perfectly fine for another 50k miles so far! Moreover, it handles like a dream and puts my previous fully loaded Eagle Talon TSI AWD to shame, even though I had it lowered. I have nothing but good things to say about my Legacy. I regularly get 28mpg, with 40% city and 60% highway driving. They also look great with some 17

This past winter, we had record snowfalls in the northeast, and I had a blast drifting my subie around in the drifts. At one point, we were tearing it up in 18 inches of snow, looking for deeper drifts just to see if we could get it stuck. We eventually succeeded when we fell into the valley of a hill, and we were up to our windows. In general, the car is great. At 131,000 miles, it's still chugging along fine. I had to replace the clutch after my friend thought he could drive a manual, but so far, I've gone through two sets of tires, and the car corners surprisingly well for all the ground clearance. The interior is not the best, but hey, for the price, nothing else can off-road at 24mpg.

This car runs really well and has great gas mileage. The only issue is that the head gaskets tend to go out too frequently.

I bought this Outtie 4 years ago in college and it has been reliable ever since. It has an average fuel economy of 25+mpg, a comfortable ride, and ample cargo room. Accessorize it with a decent CD player and you're all set. While the acceleration can be weak at times, especially over the mountains, this 98 model still gets the job done. It has held its resale value nicely, which is great for trade-ins. Maintenance costs have also remained low. However, I did experience a broken speedometer and sensor at 67K miles.

Over the years, I have been consistently impressed with the reliability of my Outback. I discovered the difference a K&N air filter made to that mildly anemic 2.5l engine, which made driving it a lot of fun. Although I am thinking of selling it, I have not experienced any head gasket problems that many owners have reported. The interior has held up very well, and the leather still looks great with minimal fuss. Additionally, everything still works the way it did when I bought it new. In rain and snow, especially wet snow on icy roads, which we get near the west coast, its performance is just stellar. The AWD and ABS are the best.
