2006 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2006 Subaru Legacy problems
The 2006 Subaru Legacy has been reported to have several common issues based on complaints from owners. These problems primarily involve the engine, transmission, and electrical systems.
- Transmission Problems:
The 2006 Subaru Legacy has reported transmission problems, particularly with the CVT gearbox. This issue affects many vehicles, and Subaru has extended the warranty cover on the CVT gearbox to an extra ten years, although there are strict criteria to meet. If not covered by warranty, a new CVT gearbox can be sourced, but installation is a challenging DIY job.
- Electrical System Problems:
The Subaru Legacy's electrical system has also been reported to have issues, including a non-functioning handbrake. The electronic handbrake capacitor and magnetic ring of the sensor are prone to fractures and breakages. Replacing the handbrake actuator can solve this issue.
- Fuel Gauge Reading Problems:
The fuel gauge in the Subaru Legacy has been reported to give incorrect readings, making it difficult to know how much fuel is in the tank. This is a software issue and can be resolved by updating the software at a Subaru dealership.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Issues:
The TPMS light may come on if there is an issue with one or more of the tires, such as low or high air pressure, a slow leak, or a flat tire. This warning light is designed to alert drivers to potential tire issues, which can affect vehicle safety and fuel efficiency.
In conclusion, the 2006 Subaru Legacy has several common issues, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and electrical systems. Regular maintenance, addressing issues promptly, and ensuring that the vehicle has a full service history can help mitigate these problems and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-02
- VIN: 4S3BL676764
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: Hub was replaced in June of 2019. Car was driven about 14,000 miles (estimate) since then. While driving down the road, I hard a noise on the front right tire. When I pulled the hub cap off, two bolts were sheared off, one nut was loose. I checked the torque on the remaining two bolts, and it was about 80 ft-lbs, which is what is specified in the manual. Since I torque all 5 in star order (twice) when I change tires, there is no change they were under or over torqued. Tires were changed twice a year by myself, so nuts went on/off four times since installing the hub. No other failures on any other studs, on two subaru cars that I followed the same practices on. I used a press to press out the studs (as pictured), but due to a defective design, the studs can't be removed without pressing out the bearing and separating the halves. Additionally the replacement studs I bought are a larger diameter, and have a shoulder that would have protected against this failure. As such this looks like a defective design. It's not an OEM replacement, it does not last a reasonable time, and presents a real risk of losing a tire at speed on a car. Manufacturer phone number as listed on Amazon is disconnected. Their web site is broken, and does not allow "chat" to work. Their listed phone number refused to allow a connection unless the dialer states their age, which makes it sound like a scam number. They claim a 10 year warranty, but want me to call them to process. Apparently I cannot do so, as they have made it impossible.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-17
- VIN: 4S3BP626X66
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While driving down the highway I had to slam on my brakes to avoid colliding with someone and at that time the brake pedal went soft. Upon further inspection 2 different brake hard lines running to the rear of the vehicle have corroded and failed. This issue was supposed to be remedied under 14V311000 and the vehicle was originally taken in for that recall. Subaru of America was contacted and said because the recall work had already been completed they would not address the issue.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-03
- VIN: 4S3BP626067
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: OUR CAR WAS RECALLED DUE TO A SAFETY HAZARD WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IN 2016, SO SEVERE THAT THE LETTER STATED THAT DEATH COULD OCCUR SHOULD THE AIRBAG DEPLOYS. AFTER AN INITIAL APPOINTMENT, WE WERE TOLD WE HAD TO WAIT ABOUT A MONTH FOR THE REPLACEMENT TO BE DELIVERED. DURING THIS TIME, WE WERE NOT ABLE TO HAVE A PASSENGER IN THE FRONT SEAT. WE HAD TO ARRANGE FOR OTHER TRANSPORTATION ON THE DAY THAT OUR CAR WAS REPAIRED AS WELL AS WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY INSPECTED FOR THE REPLACEMENT PART. AFTER THE WORK WAS DONE, WE HAD TO TAKE THE CAR BACK A THIRD TIME BECAUSE IN THE COURSE OF FIXING THE AIRBAG, THE DEALERSHIP DAMAGED OUR KEYLESS REMOTE (WHICH THEY FIXED). WE LOST VALUABLE TIME FROM WORK. NOW, LESS THAN 3 YEARS LATER, THE SAME CAR IS BEING RECALLED FOR THE SAME ISSUE: THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG POSSES A SAFETY HAZARD, THIS TIME DUE TO THE REPLACEMENT AIRBAG. WE ARE TAKING IT TO A DIFFERENT DEALER, BUT AGAIN, THE SOONEST THEY CAN GET IT INTO THE SHOP IS MARCH 11. AGAIN, WE ARE LEFT WITH A CAR THAT CANNOT TRANSPORT A FRONT SEAT PASSENGER FOR OVER A MONTH. THIS TIME, THE DEALERSHIP IS OFFERING A FREE LOANER CAR ON THE DAY THAT OUR CAR WILL BE IN THE SHOP, BUT WE ARE STILL LOSING VALUABLE TIME DUE TO THIS. THIS IS THE THIRD RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE WE OWNED IT. THE FIRST WAS A BRAKE LINE RECALL.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-12-22
- VIN: 4S3BP676364
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: THIS ONLY AFFECT 05-06 LEGACY GT OWNERS. THE UP-PIPE FOR THE SUBARU LEGACY GT IN THESE GIVEN YEARS HAVE A CATALYTIC CONVERTER IN THERE AND AFTER A CERTAIN MILEAGE, THE DEBRIS OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER BREAKING DOWN WOULD SHOOT BACK INTO THE TURBOCHARGER. THAT WOULD CAUSE THE TURBO FAILURE AND STALL THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY. THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IN THE UP-PIPE DOES NOT HAVE ANY INDICATION OF % OF WEAR AND MOST NON-CAR ENTHUSIASTS WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT THE ISSUE IS CAUSED BY EXCEPT FOR AN EXPENSIVE TURBO REPLACEMENT AND UP-PIPE REPLACEMENTS. MOST OF THE OWNERS OF THESE ISSUES TURN OVER TO CATLESS UP-PIPE BUT THAT WOULD CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON AND OVERBOOSTING OR THE ENGINE RUN RICH, FURTHER DAMAGING THE ENGINE. THIS CAN BE PRETTY DANGEROUS IF A PERSON IS ON A ROAD TRIP AND HAVING A LONG DRIVE AS IT DIRECTLY IMPACT THE DRIVABILITY OF THE VEHICLE. SUBARU HAS RECOGNIZE THE ISSUE AND THEREFORE 07+ TURBO MODELS ALL HAVE A CATLESS UP-PIPE WITH THE ECU TUNED TO THAT SPECIFICATION. I BELIEVE IT IS NOT FAIR FOR 05-06 LEGACY GT OWNERS TO HAVE TO SUFFER FROM SUCH A CRITICAL ISSUE WITHOUT SOME SORT OF COMPENSATION OR RECALL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-02-27
- VIN: 4S4BP61C867
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I HAD RUN INTO A FEW SMALL PROBLEMS THIS WINTER, LIKE MY STEERING WHEEL NOT TURNING WHEN THE CAR WAS COLD, BUT I EXPERIENCED MY FIRST MAJOR PROBLEM WHILE MY VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, BUT HAD BEEN RUNNING. I WAS GOING THROUGH A DRIVE THROUGH, HAD TO PUT MY CAR IN PARK, THEN WHEN I WENT TO SHIFT IT BACK INTO DRIVE, NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. IT WAS STUCK IN PARK. I DON'T THINK THE PROBLEM WAS TEMP. RELATED, IT WAS ABOUT 40 DEGREES OUTSIDE. AFTER TURNING THE CAR ON/OFF FOUR OR FIVE TIMES I WAS ABLE TO GET IT GOING, BUT MY HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS STRANGE. WHILE DRIVING HOME I NOTICED THAT THE "BRAKE" LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE NEXT DAY, I STARTED MY CAR BEFORE WORK TO DEFROST MY WINDOWS. THE CAR STARTED JUST FINE (ALL THE ELECTRICS WORKED AND THE ENGINE WAS ON AND RUNNING), AND I WENT INSIDE. ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER I CAME BACK TO MY CAR, AND THE ENGINE HAD TURNED OFF. AT FIRST THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS WORKED. MY FRIEND CAME AND TESTED THE VOLTAGE ANYWAY, BECAUSE A DEAD BATTERY IS COMMON WHEN IT GETS COLD, AND THE BATTERY WAS FINE. THE WARNING LIGHTS THAT I NOTICED WERE ON WERE THE "BRAKE" LIGHT, AS WELL AS THE "ABS" LIGHT. AFTER TRYING TO TURN IT ON A COUPLE TIMES, ALL THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS STOPPED WORKING AS WELL. IT WILL START IF I LEAVE IT FOR A FEW HOURS, BUT I AM TERRIFIED TO DRIVE IT ANYWHERE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS GOING ON.

- Summary: EVEN AFTER TAKING MY VEHICLE IN FOR THE BRAKE LINE RECALL, MONTHS LATER AFTER A SUBARU DEALERSHIP TESTED THEM, MY BREAKS STILL GAVE AWAY. IT WAS SAID THAT IT WAS SEVERELY CORRODED AND IT WAS BLOWN. THIS HAPPENS 3-4 MONTHS AFTER I HAD TAKEN IT IN TO GET THE RECALL CHECKED. I ENDED UP HAVING TO PAY HALF THE COST TO FIX IT. I SHOULDN'T HAD TO. THEY SHOULD'VE BEEN ABLE TO IDENTIFIED IT BEFORE IT HAD HAPPENED. IT DOES NOT TAKE 3-4 MONTHS TO BE COME SO SEVERELY CORRODED THAT MY BREAKS GAVE AWAY WHILE DRIVING TO WALMART. LUCKILY I WAS RIGHT BY THE DEALERSHIP SO ONCE THE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, I QUICKLY DROVE IT OFF THE CITY STREET AND INTO SUBARU DEALERSHIP. AS I WAS PARKING IT, I NO LONGER HAD BREAKS. I HAD IMMEDIATELY PULLED MY E-BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP MY VEHICLE IN A PARKING SPOT.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.
- Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to July 21, 2004, 2004-2005 Impreza vehicles manufactured January 28, 2003, to May 31, 2005, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to May 2, 2008, 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles manufactured February 18, 2003, to May 5, 2008, and 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to March 17, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The Subaru recall began on June 17, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. The Saab recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners of Saab vehicles may call 1-800-955-9007. Subaru's number for this recall is WQR-53. Note: The recall completely supersedes recall 14V-399 (WQL-48) and partially supersedes recall 14V-763 (WQP-51) in that model year 2004 through 2005 Subaru Impreza and model year 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles are now only part of this campaign. Note: On December 18, 2015 Subaru informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy and 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines. Note that affected vehicles not currently, or formerly registered, in the salt belt states identified above are eligible for repair, at no cost to the customer, upon request.
- Consequence: Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. Vehicles that were remedied under the previous campaign still need additional areas rust-proofed.

The spec.B is definitely worth the extra cost compared to the 'normal' GT. The wheel/Bilstein suspension package works flawlessly and the upgraded interior is loved by everyone who sees it. I actually convinced my wife to trade in her 2000 Accord for it, and we will never go back to the soulless Honda. The rush of the turbo spooling at 3 thousand makes it an absolute thrill to drive. Although, I do worry about the number of speeding tickets my wife might get.

I really like this car! The interior design is the perfect blend of sporty and classy. It feels upscale but still racy. I would love to see a boost gauge somewhere though. The AWD is great in snow and rain (and grips like crazy on dry pavement!). Only a couple of gripes - 25mpg is poor for a midsize sedan, even though it is turbocharged with AWD. Also, the rear seats don't fold down, and it's a little hard to use the power outlet in the dash (folds out). I also would have liked to see an aux audio jack for mp3 players. The car drives like a dream, blows anything else in its class out of the water, and looks great. The transmission really isn't half bad for an autobox.

What a great car! Subaru has created a vehicle with attitude that doesn't flaunt it. I spent a year considering this new car purchase and I'm very pleased with my decision. This car has jet-like g-producing acceleration and is very fast. The interior is very nicely executed, and the 'cockpit' is a pilot's dream. The red instrumentation and electroluminescent dash are very comfortable for night driving. I'm glad I got the 5-speed gear box; the AT just shifts bizarrely. Don't buy this car for your teenager unless you like paying their speeding tickets! Fuel consumption runs at the lower end of the EPA ratings. Switch the display over to instantaneous MPG to get a real scare.

This car is really well designed and quite zippy, even with the automatic shifting. The increase to 175HP this model year was a great thing and the 4-banger boxer engine is very quiet and responsive. With the rise in gas prices, a hybrid model down the road would be very welcome indeed!

I recently shopped for a Subaru Legacy GT, when the dealer offered an outstanding buy on his only spec.B. The combination of improved handling dynamics, navigation system and other features turned it into an irresistible buy. Any enthusiast who has driven the turbo GT Legacy knows that the 250 HP rating offered by Subaru is way low. Zero-to-60 in 5.3 (which this car does) means something more on the order of 275+ flywheel HP. Great performance, handling and all-wheel drive make this a terrific buy!

The ETC's hesitation during quick acceleration can be a dangerous situation, as it may cause delays in moving out of the way of other vehicles. This issue has been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Division. However, it is important to note that Subaru has acknowledged this as a common complaint for the 2.5i. Despite this, Subaru is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of their customers. We recommend considering all factors before making a purchase decision.

Definitely not worth the extra money for a specB. However, I understand that everyone has different preferences and priorities when it comes to cars. In my personal experience, Subarus are designed by engineers who prioritize performance and safety, but I can see how some people may find certain features annoying or poorly thought out. As for me, I would not buy another one again, but I respect those who have a different opinion.

I love my Subaru cars! My first one was a 2000 Outback Wagon which I traded in after 115,000 miles (but was still performing fine). When I decided to get another Subaru, I wanted something different so I got the Legacy sedan. It handles so great in fast curves that it makes me feel like a professional driver. As with the Outback, I've learned to absolutely love driving in the snow and despite driving a 70 mile roundtrip commute (in Pennsylvania) I've never missed a day of work due to snow. I work at a hospital and am on-call and have to have a reliable way to quickly arrive following an emergency call in and this car has never let me down. I've passed many stranded vehicles... even big SUVs.
