2000 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2000 Subaru Legacy problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2000 Subaru Legacy, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Torque Converter Vibration: Excessive vibration during acceleration is a common complaint among Legacy owners. This vibration is often attributed to a weak spot in the transmission torque converter. Fortunately, there is a revised version of the converter available for replacement.
- Engine Overheating and Oil Leaks: Owners have reported issues with engine overheating and increased oil consumption. These problems are typically linked to oil leaks, commonly found at the camshaft seal or crankshaft front seal. Addressing these leaks may also involve replacing the timing belt to prevent further issues.
- Rapid Battery Drain: Another common problem is rapid battery drainage, which indicates that something is continuously running when it shouldn't be. In the Legacy, this issue is often associated with the anti-lock brake system (ABS). Subaru has acknowledged this fault and issued an improved ABS relay to address the problem.
- Incorrect Fuel Gauge Reading: Some owners have experienced inaccuracies in the fuel gauge readings, making it challenging to monitor fuel levels accurately. This issue is typically related to a software problem, which can be resolved with a free software update at a Subaru dealership.
- Suspension Issues: Owners have reported feeling every bump on the road, indicating potential problems with the suspension system. A common culprit for this issue is worn lower front suspension arm rear bushes, which can be replaced more affordably than the entire suspension system.
- Dual-Mass Flywheel Noise: A loud squeaking noise when revving the engine or a deep rattle during hard acceleration may indicate a worn-out dual-mass flywheel. Replacing this part is recommended to address the noise issues commonly found in the Legacy.
- Turbo Failure: Symptoms of turbo failure in the Legacy include a lack of power, blue/black smoke from the exhaust, and unusual whistling noises from the engine. If these signs are present, it is likely that the turbo needs replacement to resolve the issue.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2000 Subaru Legacy highlight various issues that may arise with this vehicle, ranging from engine and transmission concerns to electrical and suspension issues.

I love my car! It always puts a smile on my face whenever I drive it. I've had it for almost two years now and it still looks great. It has a sporty look without being too flashy. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it definitely gets the job done in style. The handling is amazing, it feels like driving a sports car. This car is also very solid and sturdy, much more so than the previous legacy models. I was once rear-ended by a 2002 Honda Accord going 30 mph while I was at a stop light, but the only damage was to the paint. I had to get a new bumper and paint job, but that was it. The police even took pictures because they couldn't believe how well the car held up. I highly recommend this car, you won't regret it. I still get stopped on the street and asked what kind of car I'm driving!
-
You've given me 18 years of solid performance with minimal upkeep costs.
-
I've owned this car for over 7 years now and it still drives just as well as the day I bought it. While there have been a few company recalls on the vehicle, I haven't had any major problems. The car handles great in any condition and the AWD really shines in the snow. Plus, I've received so many compliments on its looks and styling!
-
This car is a lot of fun to drive, and my wife loves it. However, it is becoming a bit small for my 6'2
-
Great combination of features with this car! It has AWD, great gas mileage, lots of room, and a nice quiet ride. It's also very dependable, making it perfect for trips and bad weather. I always feel safe while driving this car. You may want to consider leasing another Subaru, but with a 6 cylinder this time.

Hi there! We wanted to share our experience with our leased 2000 Subaru GT Ltd. Unfortunately, we've had some trouble with the brakes and tires since the day we drove it off the lot. The lease contract was quite unforgiving and the service we received wasn't great, which ended up costing us quite a bit. In fact, we had to replace three sets of brakes and two sets of tires in less than 24,000 miles! Luckily, our local mechanic was able to identify the issue - a front CV joint that was about to fall apart.
Fredy Lind 2024-08-10
The vehicle may not be the fastest, but it handles really well with the AWD and can go anywhere. Although, there have been some issues with the suspension and brake systems. On the bright side, the mileage is great (25 avg) since it is all-time AWD.

Hey there! I understand that you're frustrated with your 24-year-old car that doesn't have heat and is not fuel-efficient due to missing exhaust manifold and oxygen sensors. It's tough to spend so much money on gas, especially when it's at such a high price. It sounds like your 98 Forester has been through a lot, but I hope you can find a solution that works for you!
Neal Rolfson 2024-04-16
I purchased this car brand new and although it has had some issues, I am still satisfied with its performance. The ride is smooth and the engine provides ample power, although it could benefit from a better gearing spread or an additional gear. Unfortunately, there have been some problems with the car, including a faulty electrical harness and leaking sunroofs, both of which were replaced under warranty. Additionally, the front swaybar broke and required repair, and the rear sunroof shade is not functioning properly. Recently, I have noticed a steering shimmy that is concerning. Despite these issues, I remain confident in the car's overall quality and performance.

I bought the car for my wife and she loved its style. However, we recently traded it in for something else after driving it for a while. Although it had 146,000 miles on it, we never experienced any major issues that left us stranded on the road. We did have a few minor problems, such as the front speakers going out, but they were fixed under warranty. Additionally, we had to replace the sunroof and timing belt a couple of times. The engine could have used a bit more power, but overall it was a reliable car.
