2002 Subaru Legacy problems

The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2002 Subaru Legacy problems

The Subaru Legacy is a reliable vehicle, but like any car, it has some common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most common issues with the Subaru Legacy, based on complaints from owners:

  • Faulty Headlights: The 2010 Subaru Legacy has a significant problem with its headlights. Owners have reported that the bulbs die out regularly, which is very annoying and inconvenient. The 2011 Legacy also has this issue, with some owners reporting that the headlights burned out as often as every three weeks.
  • Transmission System Issues: The 2010 and 2011 Subaru Legacy models have issues with the CVT transmission system. Drivers have noticed that when they drive or stop quickly, the Legacy will shudder, vibrate, and eventually stall. Notably, many owners have experienced this after the warranty, meaning they must pay about $2,000 for repairs.
  • Check Engine Light: The check engine light is illuminated, but there has been no drop in vehicle performance. Before you head to a garage for a full diagnostic check, have a look at the oxygen sensor element. It's common for the element to crack, and it's an easy fix if this is the problem.
  • Engine Overheating: The radiator is known for failing on the Legacy. When the engine has warmed up, open the bonnet and put some water in the radiator to cool it down. If the engine continues to overheat, you may need to replace the radiator.
  • Battery Drains: Rapid battery drains are a sign that something is constantly running when it shouldn't be. On the Legacy, the most likely culprit is the anti-lock brake system (ABS). Subaru is aware of this fault and issued an improved ABS relay which you can order directly from BreakerYard for quick delivery.
  • Non-Functioning Handbrake: The handbrake has started to need extra travel and may have stopped working entirely. The electronic handbrake capacitor, which you can find on the inner circuit board, and the magnetic ring of the sensor are prone to fractures and breakages. You can solve this issue by simply replacing the handbrake actuator, which you can find on our parts page for the Legacy.
  • CVT Gearbox: The CVT gearbox on the Legacy has a well-known issue with premature wear. It affected so many vehicles that Subaru extended the warranty cover on the CVT gearbox to an extra ten years, although they have some strict criteria to meet. If you're not covered by warranty, then you can browse our parts list for a new CVT gearbox, although installation is a challenging DIY job.
  • Incorrect Fuel Gauge Reading: This is nothing more than a software issue. Head to a Subaru dealership to have the software updated, and the problem should be resolved.

These are some of the most common problems with the Subaru Legacy, based on complaints from owners. While these issues can be frustrating, it's important to remember that the Legacy is still a reliable vehicle overall. If you're experiencing any of these problems, it's best to take your car to a certified mechanic or Subaru dealership to have it inspected and repaired.

  • Summary: To whom it may concern. I’ve purchased a second hand vehicle from New Jersey I live in California. It is 2002 Subaru outback H-6 3.0 with 52,000 miles. Upon delivery I took it to orange coast Subaru for general inspection when it was brought to my attention that there’s an open recall from 2004 stating excessive corrosion in the rear sub frame. It applies on vehicles in cold wet states where New Jersey is one of them. Service advisor assure me that all is fine and they marked it as resolved. Upon inspection when I received the car back to my horror the sub frame is corroded to the point of disintegration. I took it back in and I’ve reached out to Subaru of North America where they look into it and concluded that the factory warranty is expired, 5 years 60k miles and they will not fix the recall. Base on my research there’s no expiration on manufacture recall and I’m not sure why they will not take care of it . Please help me navigate this matter. • VIN: 4S3BH645326
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: UN-FENDERED VEHICLES - I SEE WAY TOO MANY VEHICLES ALLOWED TO BE THE OUTFITTED WITH WIDE TIRES OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLES FENDERS. HEY! I THOUGH TIRES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE COVERED BY THE VEHICLE'S FENDERS SO THEY WOULDN'T THROW OFF ROCKS, SPRAY OR DEBRIS INTO THE AIR AT OTHER VEHICLES ON THE HIGHWAY. THOSE OBNOXIOUS BRIGHT-BLUE HEADLIGHTS. SINCE WHEN DO OUR REGULATORS ALLOW HEADLIGHTS THAT BLIND OTHER DRIVERS ON THE HIGHWAYS AT NIGHT WHEN SWITCHED ON LOW-BEAM? THESE MIGHT BE GREAT FOR THE OTHER DRIVER BUT THEY'RE HELL ON SOMEONE'S RETINAS AT NIGHT IF THEY HAVE THE TEMERITY TO BE DRIVING OUT AHEAD. SURELY WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY TO ENFORCE THIS AT THE BRAKE TAG STATION. RAIN-X - WHY DO YOU ALLOW ITW GLOBAL BRANDS TO PUT THIS CRAP ON PEOPLE'S WINDSHIELDS? YOU CAN'T REMOVE IT AND THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP IT FROM SMEARING AND OBSCURING YOUR NIGHT-TIME VISION IS TO USE MORE OF IT. IT'S LIKE GLOBAL BRANDS IS CO-OPTING PEOPLE'S PRIVATE PROPERTY OR HELPING TO BLIND THEM ON THE HIGHWAYS. IF YOU USE THE STUFF AS INTENDED TO BEAD-UP RAIN INSTEAD OF USING WIPERS, YOU'RE BREAKING STATE LAW THAT SAYS YOU MUST USE HEADLIGHTS AND WIPER IN THE RAIN. SPEEDERS - WHAT IS WITH ALL THESE PEOPLE WHO DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAYS LIKE THEY'RE ON METH? DON'T WE HAVE SPEED LIMITS? CAN'T GOVERNMENT USE THE MONEY FROM SPEEDING FINES? ROAD SPRAY - WHY AREN'T TRACTOR TRUCKS AND TRAILERS NOT REQUIRED TO MINIMIZE THE BLINDING WATER SPRAY THEY MAKE ON WET HIGHWAYS? THERE ARE FENDERS AND WHEEL COVERS DESIGNED TO DO THIS.

Negative 2002 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Werner Heaney 2024-10-27

It looks like there are some issues with the front brakes, and it seems that the windows in the front doors are leaking air. Unfortunately, the dealer has not been able to correct these issues. (GOOD)

  2. Hans Breitenberg 2024-10-23

In the 5 1/2 years since we bought our 2002 legacy, we've had to replace the oil pan (60k miles), head gasket (85k miles), and catalytic converters (88k miles). Unfortunately, our maintenance costs on this car are running at a rate of around $4000/yr, which is more than the payment of a new car. It seems like this car may be a lemon, or perhaps Subaru just doesn't build them like they used to.

  3. Brad Stark 2024-05-06

Bought in November. It's great to have a solid car, especially living in the northeast. Although it's too early to tell about reliability, I can say that it has been great in the snow. We've had three storms since buying the car and it has handled them like a champ!

  4. Clement Stokes 2024-02-18

I am confident in my assessment that the Subaru I purchased did not meet my expectations. Despite my initial excitement, I experienced several issues with the car, including steering problems, persistent wind noise, and rusting of the body and brake lines. Additionally, the ABS stopped working after three years of ownership. Even the jack broke when I had a flat tire. Given the price I paid for the car, I expected better quality and reliability. As a result, I ultimately sold the car with over 59k miles on it.

Positive 2002 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Logan Turcotte 2024-11-12

Your 2002 Legacy GT Limited sounds like an amazing car! With 190k miles on it, it's impressive that it still runs and drives like new. It's great to hear that it handles well in snow and rain, and has good gas mileage. The leather interior with heated seats and sliding full moon roof sounds like a luxurious touch. It's clear that you take good care of your car with basic routine maintenance, and it's no surprise that it has never failed you. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with Subaru! Your first used 1993 Legacy L Wagon sounds like it was a real workhorse, and it's amazing that it's still going strong after all these years. It's great to hear that your new 2002 sedan is living up to your expectations as well. Thanks for sharing your story!

I purchased a 5-speed Legacy L wagon back in August 2001, after driving a 1995 Brighton for years. Despite my low mileage (only 3100 in almost 9 months!), I have noticed a few issues with the car. The clutch can be a bit grabby, and there is an odd groan in the steering when executing tight, low-speed maneuvers. Additionally, the paint has a bit of orange peel, the wheels were unbalanced, the driver's door requires a bit of force to shut, and the fuel filler door is slightly misaligned. However, I still enjoy driving my Legacy and appreciate its many features.

  4. Malcolm Morissette 2024-10-29

I recently purchased a leftover '02 L-wagon for $600 under invoice with 3.9% financing and I absolutely love it! The car has great seats and a comfortable driving position, and the wagon has plenty of room for luggage, strollers, and grocery bags. Everything on the car feels solid and it is well-equipped for the L (base) model. In my experience, Subaru vehicles are the most reliable I have ever owned, even surpassing my Acura Legend and Toyota X-cab 4x4 Pickup! They are also very easy to service for the weekend mechanic. Additionally, Subaru's have best-in-class crash test ratings, which was especially important to me after my wife's '95 Impreza was involved in an accident when someone crossed a divided highway in front of her. Since then, I always make sure to check crash ratings before purchasing a vehicle. Overall, I highly recommend Subaru to anyone in the market for a reliable and safe car.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on the LegacyWagon. Personally, I'm not a fan of two-tone or SUVs, so the Legacy is a great fit for me since it offers AWD without those drawbacks. The 4 cylinder boxer engine is exceptionally smooth and has a really nice sound when accelerating. Additionally, the car feels very solid and there are no rattles, which gives me a sense of security. The seats are also very comfortable and at an excellent height for easy entry and exiting.
