Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common Honda Odyssey problems

Based on complaints from Honda Odyssey owners, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Electric Sliding Door Issues:
    • Owners have reported problems with the electric sliding doors, where they may not open or close properly when using the activation button. This issue can require a diagnosis by a technician to identify and resolve.
  2. Warped Front Brake Rotors Causing Vibration When Braking:
    • A common problem is vibration felt when braking due to warped front brake rotors. This condition, known as lateral runout, causes heat buildup in the brake pads and rotors, leading to warping over time. Honda has addressed this by revising brake rotors to be less susceptible to warping.
  3. Transmission Issues Producing Illuminated D4 and Check Engine Lights:
    • Owners have reported transmission problems, including rough shifting that triggers illuminated D4 and check engine lights on the dashboard. This issue can range from sensor malfunctions to mechanical failures, with potential causes being dirty transmission fluid or defective sensors.

These issues, although common among Honda Odyssey models, do not affect all vehicles. It's essential for owners to be aware of these problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

Honda Odyssey 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H79KB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: My family and I had just gotten on the parkway and the car wouldn't downshift. I noticed the "Drive" light kept blinking and then the dashboard lit up with so many different warning messages. "Emmissions system problem" was the message that stayed on. All of a sudden the car started shifting on its own into neutral, while we were on the parkway. Thank goodness there was an exit approaching and we were able to get off before we were injured in an accident. I have been having battery issues ever since I got this car. Even when it was brand new, sometimes it just wouldn't start. If I wait a little bit, eventually it starts, but I have already had to replace a battery at 30,000 miles because of this. It has been happening again, but when I bring it to Honda and my mechanic, the battery is normal. After doing research, it appears there was a recall on the 2019 Honda Odyssey with an issue relating to the battery connection that causes that transmission to reboot while driving and shift on its own. Honda claims my car was not part of this recall, but this is exactly what happened to me, and I have a 2019 Odyssey. They have had my car for three weeks now and can't find answers to fix the problem. When I first brought the car in, they said the technician was finding "A LOT of stuff." Fast forward two weeks, and they called to say it's not happening anymore so they are ruling it an "intermittent issue" and to come get the car (not fixed). I told them I do not feel safe with my children in that car. I need answers. I contacted Honda Corporate who said that Honda told them the transmission fluid was the reason, and to start with that and see if it happens again. I asked them about that recall and they said "well your car doesn't come up with it." Is it just a coincidence that the same thing has been happening to my car? I asked if they were able to find out why the car doesn't start "intermittently" and they said, "no, it hasn't happened while here."
Honda Odyssey 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: For over a year, my 2018 Honda Odyssey has intermittently hesitated when accelerating, particularly when pulling into intersections or merging into traffic. This hesitation creates a significant safety risk, as the vehicle momentarily fails to respond to acceleration, increasing the potential for collisions in situations where immediate response is necessary. The issue is consistent with symptoms outlined in Honda’s recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 23V-858) involving a malfunctioning fuel pump impeller. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, who confirmed the issue but indicated that they lack the necessary parts to complete the repair. Despite repeated inquiries, the part remains unavailable, leaving the vehicle unsafe to operate and creating an ongoing safety concern. No warning lights or dashboard messages appear prior to or during the hesitation. The dealer has acknowledged the problem, but without parts, the recall remedy remains incomplete.
Honda Odyssey 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: When audio system is turned on, a very loud crackling sound occurs, and will continue after audio is turned off. Sirius XM works most of the time (with crackling sound). However, when the regular radio is turned on the audio will work for just a minute (with crackling sound), and then it will suddenly stop working and a message pops up on the display that says "audio connection lost". This also happens when a phone's Bluetooth audio is connected to the car. It triggers the audio system to suddenly fail. There has been other electrical issue with the rear lift-gate suddenly closing, with no way to stop it. It almost pinned my daughter and I on separate occasions. I'm not sure if this electrical issue is related to the audio issue, but as with any electrical issue I worry about the possibility of an electrical fire.

Honda Odyssey 2021
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H73MB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: After having the Honda Dealership perform an oil change and software update 23-008 (updating the Auto Idle Stop Software) last week, my engine stalled while at a busy intersection (PA turnpike/70 junction) during a road trip. At the long stop light the auto idle function engaged and the engine turned off. When the stop light turned green and I lifted my foot off the brake and pressed the gas the engine shut down and automatically went into Park. I had to press the start/stop button to fully turn off then turn back on the car to get the engine to restart. This is with a giant semitruck honking right behind me. The auto idle feature does not work. It sounds terrible every time the engine restarts after it has been engaged. There really should be an option to allow users to permanently disable it, and not have to remember to turn it off every time they start the car--terrible user experience.

Honda Odyssey 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H76JB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When pressing the accelerator from a stopped position, sometimes there is a need to let off the accelerator and then press it again. There are times when I do this sequence of events and the car doesn’t accelerate but almost seems to stall. Pressing the accelerator does not increase the speed. To remedy, I have been waiting a few seconds before repressing the accelerator to give the van time to shift or whatever it needs to do not to “stall”. This evening particularly, I was turning right on red so I accelerated and then I noticed that the cars on the street I was turning into had started to go so I let off the accelerator. Unfortunately I noticed that I was too far into the intersection and had no choice but to keep accelerating but my van stalled and wouldn’t accelerate when I pressed on the gas for a few seconds. It eventually “caught up” and accelerated but I ended up spinning my tires and “peeled out”.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H9XNB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While placing an item in the rear of my Honda Odyssey mini-van the hatch began to close on me. The safety sensor did not activate and the hatch was closing with great pressure. I was able to slide out before being pinned or severely injured. After investigating why it happened, I discovered and was able to replicate the behavior. The key fob was in my right front pocket at the time I was almost pinned. My house key pressed and held the rear hatch button on the key fob causing it to close. Because the button was pinned down by my other key, the safety pressure sensor failed to activate. I was able to replicate and film this behavior. I was also able to replicate the behavior using my parent's neighbor's Honda Passport. 1. This occurred after turning off the vehicle, and on the first time closing the rear hatch. I have video of being able to replicate the issue available.

After enjoying my 2005 Odyssey for almost 12 years, I decided it was time to upgrade. I didn't spend much time researching because I thought I knew what I wanted. However, I soon realized that the new Odyssey was not as good as I had hoped. To get both Navi and Rear Entertainment, I had to upgrade to a Touring, even though this combination used to be available on the EX-L. But that's okay, I can upgrade. Let me start with the changes that I find inconvenient. There are at least 4 cup holders missing, 2 in the front that used to pop down from the bottom of the dash and 2 on the sides of the 2nd row seats. There is no good spot for kids in the second row to put their drinks. The tray on the center console is very shallow, not even deep enough to hold a stack of mail. There is a large storage box in the center console now, but it is so deep that it is not realistic to go digging in there while driving. To open it up means you can't store anything on the top tray. There is now only one glove box, rather than two. I found the little glove box was just right for registration and insurance cards, now I just throw them in the big hole. The hidden compartment in the floor of the second row is now gone. With the old version of the rear entertainment system, it was one button push to control it from the front. Unfortunately, that is not the case in the new version. The entire menu/control system is very difficult to use. No longer a quick touch, but now you must dial and toggle and dial some more, and then go find the button to push. Fortunately, my kids are now big enough to control it from the back, but I don't think it would be doable with younger children (which surprisingly was the big selling point over the Toyota when I bought my first one). It is nice to be able to sync your phone, and you can even voice tag your most used contacts.Only problem is that the voice tags don't seem to work. It brings up every person with a J in their name except for the one I want, even though that person is my number one favorite. Now, for the more serious concerns, the windshield had a very bad distortion. So much so that I had a headache the entire day after I drove it to work. Imagine wearing someone else's glasses or looking through a fishbowl; that was the effect. Every person who got in the driver's seat saw it (except those at the dealer). Today, the first time I used the windshield wipers because it rained, the passenger side wiper arm popped off while I was driving. I have only had the car for about 10 days, but if this is an indication of Honda's quality, I am concerned.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2019 Odyssey that I purchased in June 2018. I've noticed that when I turn on the A/C, the fan makes a bit of noise that can be heard inside the cabin. I compared it to a couple of other identical minivans and noticed that their noise levels were a bit lower. I took it to the Honda dealer and they mentioned that it's normal. While I'm not entirely happy with the noise level, I'm still enjoying my ride. I did want to mention that I was a bit disappointed with the entertainment options. By combining Rear Entertainment and Navigation, Honda has limited the options for buyers to enjoy music the conventional way. Thanks for listening!

I have experienced multiple engine failures with my car, despite it having less than 65,000 miles. Fortunately, all repairs have been covered under warranty. However, there have been additional expenses for various minor repairs that have arisen. Over the past two years of ownership, the car has required monthly visits to the repair shop. Based on my experience, I cannot consider purchasing a Honda again.

Despite following Honda's maintenance schedule to the letter and spending between $1000 to $2000 per year on regular maintenance, our Odyssey's transmission failed twice. As a result, we feel disappointed with the minivan's poor value. In hindsight, we should have invested a little more upfront and purchased the Toyota Sienna instead.

I purchased this van as a replacement for our old Chevy Venture, which we had driven for over 7 years. We chose Honda for its 8-passenger option and renowned reliability, with the expectation of driving it for another 7 years. However, we encountered several issues within the first week, including transmission catches, road vibrations, sliding door rattles and creaks, and anti-lock brake noises. Despite these setbacks, I am confident that these issues can be resolved and that this van will serve us well for the next 5-7 years. While I have come across similar complaints about this vehicle, I remain optimistic about its potential. After all, who would have thought that a 1999 Chevy Venture would turn out to be my dream car?

Our van, which we affectionately call a 'grapefruit', has been with us since 2001 and continues to be our primary family car. While we have had a few minor issues, such as a leaking gasket and a defective fuel pump during the warranty period, we have been able to address them without much trouble. We did have to replace the hinges for both sliding doors and the key cylinder ignition after the warranty expired, but overall the van has been reliable. We did experience a couple of instances where the van left us stranded, but those were isolated incidents. We did have to glue back together one of the plastic air conditioner knobs and wrap the driver's side interior door handle in duct tape after the metallic covering started to peel off and cut my wife's finger. Despite these minor issues, we still love our van and it has served us well over the years.

Hi there! I noticed that you have 180,000 miles on your Odyssey and I think that's amazing! It's great to hear that you're still driving it and enjoying the fold down back seat. Your grandkids must love the 'wayback' seat! It's impressive that your kids drove it all through high school and it's still going strong. I'm glad to hear that the interior and exterior still look great, even after all these years. Although I understand that the door locks can be a bit tricky, it's great that you added a satellite radio a few years ago. Keep on driving and enjoying your Odyssey!

I bought my 2007 Ody in May of that year and it now has 297k miles. I've been taking good care of it by changing the oil with Mobil 1 Extended Performance Synthetic every 10-12k miles. Over the years, I've replaced the front and rear pads and rotors, had a full timing belt service at 135k and 250k, and changed the plugs myself at 176k. Although the power sliding doors have had some issues, I've had the tranny reflash and brake recall done (air in lines), and changed the tranny fluid three times so far. I've also gone through four sets of tires and had the rear lift gate struts fail at 200k and five years. I'm planning to replace the front axles, lower ball joints, wheel hubs and bearings, front struts, and rear shocks soon. I'm hoping to get another 200k miles out of my van. At this rate, it might even outlive me!

I have to admit, driving excitement is not the main reason people buy a minivan, but Honda has done a great job of making a functional vehicle feel enjoyable to drive. It meets all our needs and remains quite fun to drive. The mileage is pretty good, and the park assist feature is a great help. We are really pleased with it after 4 months of driving.
