Honda Odyssey problems

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common Honda Odyssey problems
Based on complaints from Honda Odyssey owners, several common problems have been reported:
- Electric Sliding Door Issues:
- Owners have reported problems with the electric sliding doors, where they may not open or close properly when using the activation button. This issue can require a diagnosis by a technician to identify and resolve.
- Warped Front Brake Rotors Causing Vibration When Braking:
- A common problem is vibration felt when braking due to warped front brake rotors. This condition, known as lateral runout, causes heat buildup in the brake pads and rotors, leading to warping over time. Honda has addressed this by revising brake rotors to be less susceptible to warping.
- Transmission Issues Producing Illuminated D4 and Check Engine Lights:
- Owners have reported transmission problems, including rough shifting that triggers illuminated D4 and check engine lights on the dashboard. This issue can range from sensor malfunctions to mechanical failures, with potential causes being dirty transmission fluid or defective sensors.
These issues, although common among Honda Odyssey models, do not affect all vehicles. It's essential for owners to be aware of these problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

Honda Odyssey 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNRL6H79KB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: My family and I had just gotten on the parkway and the car wouldn't downshift. I noticed the "Drive" light kept blinking and then the dashboard lit up with so many different warning messages. "Emmissions system problem" was the message that stayed on. All of a sudden the car started shifting on its own into neutral, while we were on the parkway. Thank goodness there was an exit approaching and we were able to get off before we were injured in an accident. I have been having battery issues ever since I got this car. Even when it was brand new, sometimes it just wouldn't start. If I wait a little bit, eventually it starts, but I have already had to replace a battery at 30,000 miles because of this. It has been happening again, but when I bring it to Honda and my mechanic, the battery is normal. After doing research, it appears there was a recall on the 2019 Honda Odyssey with an issue relating to the battery connection that causes that transmission to reboot while driving and shift on its own. Honda claims my car was not part of this recall, but this is exactly what happened to me, and I have a 2019 Odyssey. They have had my car for three weeks now and can't find answers to fix the problem. When I first brought the car in, they said the technician was finding "A LOT of stuff." Fast forward two weeks, and they called to say it's not happening anymore so they are ruling it an "intermittent issue" and to come get the car (not fixed). I told them I do not feel safe with my children in that car. I need answers. I contacted Honda Corporate who said that Honda told them the transmission fluid was the reason, and to start with that and see if it happens again. I asked them about that recall and they said "well your car doesn't come up with it." Is it just a coincidence that the same thing has been happening to my car? I asked if they were able to find out why the car doesn't start "intermittently" and they said, "no, it hasn't happened while here."
Honda Odyssey 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: For over a year, my 2018 Honda Odyssey has intermittently hesitated when accelerating, particularly when pulling into intersections or merging into traffic. This hesitation creates a significant safety risk, as the vehicle momentarily fails to respond to acceleration, increasing the potential for collisions in situations where immediate response is necessary. The issue is consistent with symptoms outlined in Honda’s recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 23V-858) involving a malfunctioning fuel pump impeller. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, who confirmed the issue but indicated that they lack the necessary parts to complete the repair. Despite repeated inquiries, the part remains unavailable, leaving the vehicle unsafe to operate and creating an ongoing safety concern. No warning lights or dashboard messages appear prior to or during the hesitation. The dealer has acknowledged the problem, but without parts, the recall remedy remains incomplete.
Honda Odyssey 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When audio system is turned on, a very loud crackling sound occurs, and will continue after audio is turned off. Sirius XM works most of the time (with crackling sound). However, when the regular radio is turned on the audio will work for just a minute (with crackling sound), and then it will suddenly stop working and a message pops up on the display that says "audio connection lost". This also happens when a phone's Bluetooth audio is connected to the car. It triggers the audio system to suddenly fail. There has been other electrical issue with the rear lift-gate suddenly closing, with no way to stop it. It almost pinned my daughter and I on separate occasions. I'm not sure if this electrical issue is related to the audio issue, but as with any electrical issue I worry about the possibility of an electrical fire.

Honda Odyssey 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 5FNRL6H73MB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: After having the Honda Dealership perform an oil change and software update 23-008 (updating the Auto Idle Stop Software) last week, my engine stalled while at a busy intersection (PA turnpike/70 junction) during a road trip. At the long stop light the auto idle function engaged and the engine turned off. When the stop light turned green and I lifted my foot off the brake and pressed the gas the engine shut down and automatically went into Park. I had to press the start/stop button to fully turn off then turn back on the car to get the engine to restart. This is with a giant semitruck honking right behind me. The auto idle feature does not work. It sounds terrible every time the engine restarts after it has been engaged. There really should be an option to allow users to permanently disable it, and not have to remember to turn it off every time they start the car--terrible user experience.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 5FNRL6H76JB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When pressing the accelerator from a stopped position, sometimes there is a need to let off the accelerator and then press it again. There are times when I do this sequence of events and the car doesn’t accelerate but almost seems to stall. Pressing the accelerator does not increase the speed. To remedy, I have been waiting a few seconds before repressing the accelerator to give the van time to shift or whatever it needs to do not to “stall”. This evening particularly, I was turning right on red so I accelerated and then I noticed that the cars on the street I was turning into had started to go so I let off the accelerator. Unfortunately I noticed that I was too far into the intersection and had no choice but to keep accelerating but my van stalled and wouldn’t accelerate when I pressed on the gas for a few seconds. It eventually “caught up” and accelerated but I ended up spinning my tires and “peeled out”.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
- VIN: 5FNRL6H9XNB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While placing an item in the rear of my Honda Odyssey mini-van the hatch began to close on me. The safety sensor did not activate and the hatch was closing with great pressure. I was able to slide out before being pinned or severely injured. After investigating why it happened, I discovered and was able to replicate the behavior. The key fob was in my right front pocket at the time I was almost pinned. My house key pressed and held the rear hatch button on the key fob causing it to close. Because the button was pinned down by my other key, the safety pressure sensor failed to activate. I was able to replicate and film this behavior. I was also able to replicate the behavior using my parent's neighbor's Honda Passport. 1. This occurred after turning off the vehicle, and on the first time closing the rear hatch. I have video of being able to replicate the issue available.

Vehicle year: 1998
We've owned this small van for a year and a half now. We bought it from the original owners who only put 72,000 miles on it in the 8 years they owned it. It handles really well and is surprisingly good in the Maine snow. The car feels solid and is relatively heavy for its size. The 4 cylinder VTEC engine provides nice power when needed, and when we drive conservatively, we've been able to squeeze 30 mpg out of it. If Honda had offered a 5-speed manual for this vehicle, it would be our dream car. I know we could bump the gas mileage up a couple of MPG. Hint to Honda: Bring back this wonderful, ahead-of-its-time car! Hint to Toyota: Bring back the remarkable Corolla All-trac wagon!

We purchased our Odyssey over 3 years ago when we welcomed a new family member. With 5 people, we needed a 'mom mobile' or SUV. We were on a tight budget, but we stumbled upon a used '96 Odyssey and were immediately sold after taking a look and test driving it. At the time of purchase, it had 95K miles on it, and we've since added an additional 30k. It has been extremely reliable. I changed the timing belt as a precaution and have only used good quality gas, avoiding cheap swamp gas stations. I replaced the rear shocks and exhaust manifold when they finally failed after 13 years of service. When I do the repairs myself, they cost less than $200-$400 and are very easy to do.

This vehicle has been a great ride throughout its life. It comfortably seats 7 people and has plenty of cargo space. The ride is generally smooth, although there is some road noise, it is not too distracting. The only downside is that the traction can be too sensitive when driving in snow, making it feel like the vehicle is towing a heavy weight. I found that turning off the traction control in 2-4 inches of snow helped to improve the driving experience.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a 2011 Odyssey EX-L w/ NAVI! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. It sounds like you did a lot of research before making your decision, and it paid off. The Odyssey's 3rd row seating and trunk space make it a practical choice for families, and it's wonderful to hear that your wife loves it too. The spacious interior is perfect for kids and carpooling, and the trunk space makes trips to the store or sports activities a breeze. While it may not compare to your luxury sedan, the Odyssey is definitely a functional and reliable family vehicle. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

Vehicle year: 2013
This is our second Odyssey, the first being in 2005. I must say, this one is a significant improvement. It is much more refined, quiet, comfortable, and fun to drive. Despite the reduced road feel secondary to the electric power steering, it takes the curves better than the old Odyssey. The driver's seat is very comfortable. I chose this over the Mercedes GL 450, essentially getting everything for half the price, with Honda reliability and good resale value. The car does not lack any horsepower; push the gas and VTEC kicks in at 4000 RPM, and the car flies. Most of the time, you do not need that with family and kids. It really feels like a sedan. With 4000 miles on it, there have been no problems. Gas consumption is much better than my old Odyssey.

We recently purchased a Honda, but unfortunately experienced some issues. After only 10,000 miles, we noticed a clicking noise during slow sharp turns and discovered that both front shock struts had come loose. While one strut was replaced, the other was only tightened. Thankfully, this was covered under warranty, but it did require a week in the shop. At 36,036 miles, we noticed an excessive whining noise and discovered that the power steering pump had gone out. Unfortunately, the dealer refused to cover the repair since the 36,000 mile warranty had expired. Luckily, we had a 3rd party 100,000 mile warranty with a $100 deductible. At 39,000 miles, after an 800 mile road trip, the traction control light and check engine light came on. We took it to the dealer and they found that the piston rings had worn out prematurely. However, this issue was covered under the lawsuit settlement against Honda, as this motor has been known to burn oil. Ultimately, we decided to sell the car to a local dealership and have since purchased a new Sienna SE. We hope to have better luck with this vehicle and will not be purchasing a Honda again.

We bought this van brand new in March 2018. Unfortunately, we've had a few issues with it. During a vacation journey through north Florida, the van's speed derated from 70 mph to 40 mph at just 800 miles. We drove the van in limp mode 16 miles away to a Lake City, FL Honda dealer, where it was repaired several days later for a stuck valve cylenoid. After returning home to north Georgia at 1,700 miles, the van derated again on the highway. After parking, the van wouldn't shift into gear and had to be towed by Honda Roadside assistance. The van was down for an additional week as the spool valve assembly was replaced. Today, at 3,800 miles and three months old, oil is leaking on the back side of the motor and dripping onto the catalytic converter. We're heading back to the dealer again. We've created our third case file with Honda N.A. After the second breakdown, Honda NA responded that they didn't see the van as having an issue and told us they would not be offering any trade assistance towards another Odyssey in an effort to get us out of the apparent lemon. We're disappointed with Honda's customer service, and this will definitely be the last Honda in our family.

Hi there! I recently had to replace the rear engine mount on my car after 60K miles, which cost me $1K. After doing some research, I found out that this is a common issue and it tends to happen every 50-60,000 miles. I'm definitely considering trading in this vehicle before it reaches another 60K miles and I don't think I'll be buying another Honda again. I expected better quality from them, especially for such a vital part that shouldn't fail so frequently.

We bought our Honda Odyssey used with around 40k miles on it. Unfortunately, we've had to replace the transmission three times. While I always believed that Honda made quality vehicles, I have been extremely disappointed with our experience. In contrast, my 1995 Ford Explorer, which has over 240k miles on it, has given me far fewer problems. Despite these issues, I still find the Odyssey fun to drive. If you're considering buying this vehicle used, I would strongly recommend requesting an extended warranty, just in case.

As a Honda family, we have owned a Honda Civic and a 2019 Honda Odyssey. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the Odyssey, including a breakdown on the road and a frozen software system affecting the radio and rear camera. Although the car is currently in the shop for repairs, I am concerned about potential future issues, especially given the ongoing class action lawsuit against Honda. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful that the repairs will be successful and appreciate the support of the Honda team.
