Honda Odyssey problems

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common Honda Odyssey problems
Based on complaints from Honda Odyssey owners, several common problems have been reported:
- Electric Sliding Door Issues:
- Owners have reported problems with the electric sliding doors, where they may not open or close properly when using the activation button. This issue can require a diagnosis by a technician to identify and resolve.
- Warped Front Brake Rotors Causing Vibration When Braking:
- A common problem is vibration felt when braking due to warped front brake rotors. This condition, known as lateral runout, causes heat buildup in the brake pads and rotors, leading to warping over time. Honda has addressed this by revising brake rotors to be less susceptible to warping.
- Transmission Issues Producing Illuminated D4 and Check Engine Lights:
- Owners have reported transmission problems, including rough shifting that triggers illuminated D4 and check engine lights on the dashboard. This issue can range from sensor malfunctions to mechanical failures, with potential causes being dirty transmission fluid or defective sensors.
These issues, although common among Honda Odyssey models, do not affect all vehicles. It's essential for owners to be aware of these problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.
What is the common problem of Honda Odysseys?

Honda Odyssey 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNRL6H79KB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: My family and I had just gotten on the parkway and the car wouldn't downshift. I noticed the "Drive" light kept blinking and then the dashboard lit up with so many different warning messages. "Emmissions system problem" was the message that stayed on. All of a sudden the car started shifting on its own into neutral, while we were on the parkway. Thank goodness there was an exit approaching and we were able to get off before we were injured in an accident. I have been having battery issues ever since I got this car. Even when it was brand new, sometimes it just wouldn't start. If I wait a little bit, eventually it starts, but I have already had to replace a battery at 30,000 miles because of this. It has been happening again, but when I bring it to Honda and my mechanic, the battery is normal. After doing research, it appears there was a recall on the 2019 Honda Odyssey with an issue relating to the battery connection that causes that transmission to reboot while driving and shift on its own. Honda claims my car was not part of this recall, but this is exactly what happened to me, and I have a 2019 Odyssey. They have had my car for three weeks now and can't find answers to fix the problem. When I first brought the car in, they said the technician was finding "A LOT of stuff." Fast forward two weeks, and they called to say it's not happening anymore so they are ruling it an "intermittent issue" and to come get the car (not fixed). I told them I do not feel safe with my children in that car. I need answers. I contacted Honda Corporate who said that Honda told them the transmission fluid was the reason, and to start with that and see if it happens again. I asked them about that recall and they said "well your car doesn't come up with it." Is it just a coincidence that the same thing has been happening to my car? I asked if they were able to find out why the car doesn't start "intermittently" and they said, "no, it hasn't happened while here."
Honda Odyssey 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: For over a year, my 2018 Honda Odyssey has intermittently hesitated when accelerating, particularly when pulling into intersections or merging into traffic. This hesitation creates a significant safety risk, as the vehicle momentarily fails to respond to acceleration, increasing the potential for collisions in situations where immediate response is necessary. The issue is consistent with symptoms outlined in Honda’s recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 23V-858) involving a malfunctioning fuel pump impeller. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, who confirmed the issue but indicated that they lack the necessary parts to complete the repair. Despite repeated inquiries, the part remains unavailable, leaving the vehicle unsafe to operate and creating an ongoing safety concern. No warning lights or dashboard messages appear prior to or during the hesitation. The dealer has acknowledged the problem, but without parts, the recall remedy remains incomplete.
Honda Odyssey 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When audio system is turned on, a very loud crackling sound occurs, and will continue after audio is turned off. Sirius XM works most of the time (with crackling sound). However, when the regular radio is turned on the audio will work for just a minute (with crackling sound), and then it will suddenly stop working and a message pops up on the display that says "audio connection lost". This also happens when a phone's Bluetooth audio is connected to the car. It triggers the audio system to suddenly fail. There has been other electrical issue with the rear lift-gate suddenly closing, with no way to stop it. It almost pinned my daughter and I on separate occasions. I'm not sure if this electrical issue is related to the audio issue, but as with any electrical issue I worry about the possibility of an electrical fire.

Honda Odyssey 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 5FNRL6H73MB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: After having the Honda Dealership perform an oil change and software update 23-008 (updating the Auto Idle Stop Software) last week, my engine stalled while at a busy intersection (PA turnpike/70 junction) during a road trip. At the long stop light the auto idle function engaged and the engine turned off. When the stop light turned green and I lifted my foot off the brake and pressed the gas the engine shut down and automatically went into Park. I had to press the start/stop button to fully turn off then turn back on the car to get the engine to restart. This is with a giant semitruck honking right behind me. The auto idle feature does not work. It sounds terrible every time the engine restarts after it has been engaged. There really should be an option to allow users to permanently disable it, and not have to remember to turn it off every time they start the car--terrible user experience.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 5FNRL6H76JB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When pressing the accelerator from a stopped position, sometimes there is a need to let off the accelerator and then press it again. There are times when I do this sequence of events and the car doesn’t accelerate but almost seems to stall. Pressing the accelerator does not increase the speed. To remedy, I have been waiting a few seconds before repressing the accelerator to give the van time to shift or whatever it needs to do not to “stall”. This evening particularly, I was turning right on red so I accelerated and then I noticed that the cars on the street I was turning into had started to go so I let off the accelerator. Unfortunately I noticed that I was too far into the intersection and had no choice but to keep accelerating but my van stalled and wouldn’t accelerate when I pressed on the gas for a few seconds. It eventually “caught up” and accelerated but I ended up spinning my tires and “peeled out”.

- VIN: 5FNRL6H9XNB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While placing an item in the rear of my Honda Odyssey mini-van the hatch began to close on me. The safety sensor did not activate and the hatch was closing with great pressure. I was able to slide out before being pinned or severely injured. After investigating why it happened, I discovered and was able to replicate the behavior. The key fob was in my right front pocket at the time I was almost pinned. My house key pressed and held the rear hatch button on the key fob causing it to close. Because the button was pinned down by my other key, the safety pressure sensor failed to activate. I was able to replicate and film this behavior. I was also able to replicate the behavior using my parent's neighbor's Honda Passport. 1. This occurred after turning off the vehicle, and on the first time closing the rear hatch. I have video of being able to replicate the issue available.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to wait until 2024 to buy a car because of the rumors of a redesign and possible hybrid, but circumstances had me shopping early. However, I'm okay with it! I ended up getting the Touring trim and I have to say, the parking sensors and blind spot alerts are great. It has plenty of power to drive on the crazy streets of Houston and the highway MPG is averaging 26-28, but the city driving is 18-19 MPG. Overall, after driving 8000 miles, I'm averaging 21 MPG. The interior is really nice with the leather and the steering wheel feels great. The steering wheel controls are easy to use and convenient. I don't see a purpose for the paddle shift controls, but that's just me. The Touring also comes with “Cabin Watch” that allows me to see the little ones in the back seats from my main console screen. I think the kids like that more than I do! My favorite feature is the middle row seats! You can remove the center seat and slide the two outer seats together. It gives some room on either/both sides for 3rd row entry and I’m a big fan of that. There's plenty of interior room for the family! The only downside is that I'm 6’2” and there's just enough legroom in the driver's seat for me to be happy with. The seat sits at a funny angle that makes my hips tight after long trips, but it's not too much to complain about. Lastly, the exterior of the van is questionable. I leaned on the sliding door while pumping gas one day and felt the body dent in. Luckily it didn’t stay dented and it popped back into place, but it did worry me for a moment. I hope it’s designed to do that. Overall, it's a great van so far and Honda is very reliable. It has plenty of power and no lag. I average 350/365 miles per tank without going into fuel reserve. The middle row needs a little more leg room, but the third row is spacious and my older kids no longer complain about leg room (compared to my previous SUV).

The navigation system on the 2016 model can be quite challenging to use while driving. We have noticed that some of the touch screen apps have been removed, which we believe could potentially lead to safety issues. Additionally, the voice recognition feature is not very reliable, and we often find ourselves resorting to using our cell phone navigation instead. It's frustrating to have invested so much money in a navigation system that doesn't meet our needs.

Hi there! Last summer, I bought my van and I must say, I absolutely love it! It's super fuel efficient, the interior is really comfortable, and the 2.3L engine gives great acceleration. Plus, the exterior is very practical. When I bought it, it already had 130K miles on it, but I've put another 12K miles on it since then. I did have to get the starter motor replaced for $300 and the transmission rebuilt for $1500, but overall it's been a great investment. I am having a bit of trouble turning the key in the ignition, so I might need a new ignition switch or a key replacement for $80. By the way, have you seen the 2007 Honda FIT? It has a similar body styling to my van. Also, can you believe that the 1998 Odyssey was way ahead of its time? Thanks for listening!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the 2009 EX-L model with rear entertainment. I have to say, I've been really impressed so far! The comfort is fantastic and the cargo space is excellent. I was a bit hesitant to switch from an SUV to a minivan, but I've actually enjoyed the change.

Vehicle year: 2009
We purchased this vehicle brand new in 2009 and have owned it for 9 years. Despite having only 82,000 miles on it, we don't drive it much. However, I am confident that this car could easily last us 20 years! It performs exceptionally well, is incredibly comfortable, and apart from a minor battery issue, we have only done regular maintenance on it. It still drives like it's only a couple of years old. The only downside is the gas mileage, which is probably closer to 16mpg, but we live in a hilly area and mostly do city driving. If I were in the market for a minivan today, I would definitely purchase another Odyssey.

This is a brand new 2023 vehicle with all the family-friendly features, but unfortunately, the AC is not up to par. The poor kids in the third row are literally sweating and uncomfortable. It would be great if Honda could address this issue, especially since they market this as a family-friendly vehicle.

We bought a 1999 Odyssey brand new from a local dealership and have owned it ever since. We are disappointed with the overall quality and reliability of the vehicle. We have had some recalls, sliding door problems, suspension problems, rear brake problems, and the transmission needed to be replaced around 64,000 miles. Although Honda covered the transmission, we believe that no vehicle should have such issues after only 64,000 miles, especially one that is known to be very reliable. This experience has made me question the notion that foreign vehicles are better than American vehicles, as my parents have a Ford Freestar and have had absolutely no problems at all at the 80,000 mark and counting. I think it's worth considering American-made vehicles as well.

I encountered several significant issues with my car. Firstly, the soft brake pedal was a known technical service problem, which was temporarily resolved by applying silicone to the known leak. However, at 9K miles, the transmission failed, and the service team initially tried to blame me for the issue. They suggested that they could investigate the problem for $180/hour. However, I needed my car, so two days later, they found a loose wire connector and reconnected it under warranty. Unfortunately, shortly after the 36-month warranty (13K miles), the soft brake pedal issue resurfaced. I found the original TSB for the brakes and insisted that they perform that fix. I also had to pay $400 for a new VSA stability module. Despite the service team's claim that the soft brake pedal is normal, I recently received a recall notice for a brake defect, which was discovered five years later.

I was very close to purchasing the 2018 Honda Odyssey, but I ultimately opted for the Sienna instead. While I generally like the latest tech, such as Apple Play which the Odyssey has but the Sienna does not, I found that I actually prefer the knob transmission handle (and round A/C knob) on the Sienna instead of the transmission buttons on the 2018 Odyssey. One of our best friends bought the 2018 Odyssey EX-L and loves it, although they did have some issues with the GPS not working properly to get to the right destination. I was disappointed to find that the 2018 Odyssey's A/C vents for the 2nd/3rd row seats are on the side of the vehicle, which can be uncomfortable on hot weather days, unlike the Sienna which has ceiling vents. Nevertheless, I still would have considered purchasing the 2018 Odyssey, but the one thing that killed the purchase for me were the uncomfortable seats. I was willing to upgrade and spend more to get the Elite model because it had perforated seats in the 1st/2nd rows which offer a bit more cushion, but they were still nowhere near as comfortable as the Sienna's seating. During a ride in my best friend's 2018 Odyssey EX-L, I sat in the 2nd row and found the seating to be so uncomfortable (too hard) that I actually disliked the whole ride experience. It also seemed to be a bit noisier than the Sienna ride. In all fairness, the Elite does have ventilated seats as standard in the front seats, which the Sienna does not have.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the vehicle I owned for 11 years. Overall, it was a great vehicle and served us well. The only consistent issue we had was with the passenger automatic sliding doors, which would get out of alignment every other year or so. Additionally, it developed a slight oil leak (very slight), with an estimated one to five drops per week. However, this never caused any major problems. I truly hope that the new owners have as positive of an experience with this vehicle as we did!
