Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common Honda Odyssey problems

Based on complaints from Honda Odyssey owners, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Electric Sliding Door Issues:
    • Owners have reported problems with the electric sliding doors, where they may not open or close properly when using the activation button. This issue can require a diagnosis by a technician to identify and resolve.
  2. Warped Front Brake Rotors Causing Vibration When Braking:
    • A common problem is vibration felt when braking due to warped front brake rotors. This condition, known as lateral runout, causes heat buildup in the brake pads and rotors, leading to warping over time. Honda has addressed this by revising brake rotors to be less susceptible to warping.
  3. Transmission Issues Producing Illuminated D4 and Check Engine Lights:
    • Owners have reported transmission problems, including rough shifting that triggers illuminated D4 and check engine lights on the dashboard. This issue can range from sensor malfunctions to mechanical failures, with potential causes being dirty transmission fluid or defective sensors.

These issues, although common among Honda Odyssey models, do not affect all vehicles. It's essential for owners to be aware of these problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

Honda Odyssey 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H79KB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: My family and I had just gotten on the parkway and the car wouldn't downshift. I noticed the "Drive" light kept blinking and then the dashboard lit up with so many different warning messages. "Emmissions system problem" was the message that stayed on. All of a sudden the car started shifting on its own into neutral, while we were on the parkway. Thank goodness there was an exit approaching and we were able to get off before we were injured in an accident. I have been having battery issues ever since I got this car. Even when it was brand new, sometimes it just wouldn't start. If I wait a little bit, eventually it starts, but I have already had to replace a battery at 30,000 miles because of this. It has been happening again, but when I bring it to Honda and my mechanic, the battery is normal. After doing research, it appears there was a recall on the 2019 Honda Odyssey with an issue relating to the battery connection that causes that transmission to reboot while driving and shift on its own. Honda claims my car was not part of this recall, but this is exactly what happened to me, and I have a 2019 Odyssey. They have had my car for three weeks now and can't find answers to fix the problem. When I first brought the car in, they said the technician was finding "A LOT of stuff." Fast forward two weeks, and they called to say it's not happening anymore so they are ruling it an "intermittent issue" and to come get the car (not fixed). I told them I do not feel safe with my children in that car. I need answers. I contacted Honda Corporate who said that Honda told them the transmission fluid was the reason, and to start with that and see if it happens again. I asked them about that recall and they said "well your car doesn't come up with it." Is it just a coincidence that the same thing has been happening to my car? I asked if they were able to find out why the car doesn't start "intermittently" and they said, "no, it hasn't happened while here."
Honda Odyssey 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: For over a year, my 2018 Honda Odyssey has intermittently hesitated when accelerating, particularly when pulling into intersections or merging into traffic. This hesitation creates a significant safety risk, as the vehicle momentarily fails to respond to acceleration, increasing the potential for collisions in situations where immediate response is necessary. The issue is consistent with symptoms outlined in Honda’s recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 23V-858) involving a malfunctioning fuel pump impeller. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, who confirmed the issue but indicated that they lack the necessary parts to complete the repair. Despite repeated inquiries, the part remains unavailable, leaving the vehicle unsafe to operate and creating an ongoing safety concern. No warning lights or dashboard messages appear prior to or during the hesitation. The dealer has acknowledged the problem, but without parts, the recall remedy remains incomplete.
Honda Odyssey 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: When audio system is turned on, a very loud crackling sound occurs, and will continue after audio is turned off. Sirius XM works most of the time (with crackling sound). However, when the regular radio is turned on the audio will work for just a minute (with crackling sound), and then it will suddenly stop working and a message pops up on the display that says "audio connection lost". This also happens when a phone's Bluetooth audio is connected to the car. It triggers the audio system to suddenly fail. There has been other electrical issue with the rear lift-gate suddenly closing, with no way to stop it. It almost pinned my daughter and I on separate occasions. I'm not sure if this electrical issue is related to the audio issue, but as with any electrical issue I worry about the possibility of an electrical fire.

Honda Odyssey 2021
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H73MB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: After having the Honda Dealership perform an oil change and software update 23-008 (updating the Auto Idle Stop Software) last week, my engine stalled while at a busy intersection (PA turnpike/70 junction) during a road trip. At the long stop light the auto idle function engaged and the engine turned off. When the stop light turned green and I lifted my foot off the brake and pressed the gas the engine shut down and automatically went into Park. I had to press the start/stop button to fully turn off then turn back on the car to get the engine to restart. This is with a giant semitruck honking right behind me. The auto idle feature does not work. It sounds terrible every time the engine restarts after it has been engaged. There really should be an option to allow users to permanently disable it, and not have to remember to turn it off every time they start the car--terrible user experience.

Honda Odyssey 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H76JB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When pressing the accelerator from a stopped position, sometimes there is a need to let off the accelerator and then press it again. There are times when I do this sequence of events and the car doesn’t accelerate but almost seems to stall. Pressing the accelerator does not increase the speed. To remedy, I have been waiting a few seconds before repressing the accelerator to give the van time to shift or whatever it needs to do not to “stall”. This evening particularly, I was turning right on red so I accelerated and then I noticed that the cars on the street I was turning into had started to go so I let off the accelerator. Unfortunately I noticed that I was too far into the intersection and had no choice but to keep accelerating but my van stalled and wouldn’t accelerate when I pressed on the gas for a few seconds. It eventually “caught up” and accelerated but I ended up spinning my tires and “peeled out”.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H9XNB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While placing an item in the rear of my Honda Odyssey mini-van the hatch began to close on me. The safety sensor did not activate and the hatch was closing with great pressure. I was able to slide out before being pinned or severely injured. After investigating why it happened, I discovered and was able to replicate the behavior. The key fob was in my right front pocket at the time I was almost pinned. My house key pressed and held the rear hatch button on the key fob causing it to close. Because the button was pinned down by my other key, the safety pressure sensor failed to activate. I was able to replicate and film this behavior. I was also able to replicate the behavior using my parent's neighbor's Honda Passport. 1. This occurred after turning off the vehicle, and on the first time closing the rear hatch. I have video of being able to replicate the issue available.

After waiting for over 7 months, we finally had the chance to test drive a Honda Touring 2018. Although the dealership only had an Elite in stock, we were able to test its features. The Magic Seat was awesome, and we were impressed with the good performance, brakes, navigation system, cabin watch, and remote engine start. However, we were disappointed with the air conditioning. The front seat was okay, but the third row had poor air flow, and the vent was poorly placed. This was a major concern for us, especially since we live in Las Vegas where temperatures can reach up to 115 degrees during the summer. Despite our disappointment, we appreciated the honesty of the salesperson who also acknowledged the issue. We have decided to hold off on purchasing the car until this issue is resolved. We hope that the 2019 model will have this issue fixed. Thank you for your understanding.

The vehicle has experienced multiple issues, including transmission failure, malfunctioning doors, power steering hose and pump replacement, and rear hatch strut failure. Despite these challenges, I found the interior to be comfortable and ergonomic. However, the cost of repairs outweighs the benefits of the vehicle.

This van has had numerous issues, including problems with the motor mounts, catalytic converter, torque converter, struts, and steering fluid pump. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my decision to trade it in now that the warranty has expired. Moving forward, I am excited to invest in a more reliable vehicle that will better suit my needs.

Update 7/2021: We are still experiencing some issues with the van, unfortunately. The back tailgate door opens, but it falls slowly and sometimes even beeps and closes itself. We have had the battery tested multiple times, and it is healthy, but it still dies frequently. We have checked everything we can think of, but we are still having problems. If I leave music playing while I dry the van, it'll be dead by the time I'm done. We are hoping to find a more reliable vehicle soon. Update 1/2020: Unfortunately, we are still experiencing some issues with the van. The passenger side sliding door freezes every time I turn the van on if it was in the process of closing. I then have to get out and manually close this door. The auto stop feature still doesn't work when I stop at lights, and I miss having separate DVD and cd players. I also miss the on board mp3 player that was in our last model. My value is also in the toilet. For a Honda, I thought it would hold a better value. Now I'm waiting to get rid of it. End update. Update 7/2019: We still have to make sure Cabin Watch is turned off on trips in order to watch a DVD. It is set to automatically turn on with the van, so it sucks when we forget to change it and the DVD and camera system freezes. In order to fix it, we have to stop and turn the van off. The auto idle still doesn't work 90% of the time. We are hoping that Honda will address these issues soon. Update 12/28/18: Our van has 22,000 miles on the odometer now.We have been experiencing some issues with the DVD system and in-cabin camera. Sometimes they freeze and do not work until we turn the van off and on a few times. According to the dealership, Honda blames the Cabin watch camera, which overheats the system. Therefore, we cannot watch the camera for long periods of time or it will shut down the DVD system. The overall entertainment system is not up to our expectations. We prefer CDs every now and then, but we have to use the DVD player for them too. Our last Odyssey had built-in memory that we could use as an mp3 player, and we miss that feature in this model. The auto-stop feature works sometimes, but it randomly stops working. This is my second Odyssey purchase of a brand new vehicle. I owned a 2012 from new until this year without a single problem. We decided to switch to the 2018 this year after seeing all of the fun new features. Although we have experienced some issues, we still appreciate the new features and hope that the dealership can help us resolve the problems. We watched a one-hour long show during which I experienced some issues with the car. The object detection system caused me to brake suddenly a couple of times, which was a bit scary. Additionally, the auto-bright lights can be annoying as they turn on even when other cars are around. I also had some trouble with the sliding door buttons freezing up when my son and I pushed them too close together, despite the features claiming this wouldn't happen. Overall, I miss my 2012 van as everything worked great on it. Despite having bought 5 new cars in the last 5 years, I've never experienced so many glitches with a brand new car as I have with this one. The Honda dealership promised us an update to fix the DVD player, but it's been 2 months and we're still waiting. Despite these issues, I must say that it's a beautiful van.

Our brand new odyssey experienced transmission issues at only 300 miles, resulting in a replacement. Despite this setback, we decided to trade it in. However, at 3500 miles, we encountered the same transmission error once again.

I have an Odyssey Touring Elite! Here are some of the things I love about it: 1. It has incredible hauling capacity for 8 passengers and their luggage. 2. The third row is very comfortable compared to other minivans. 3. The Elite model comes with standard HID headlights and safety features that are life savers and should be standard on all models in my opinion. 4. The front warning collision system is incredibly fast to alert drivers of a possible collision. 5. Maintenance costs are very low. 6. The optional audio system standard on the Elite has incredible sound. My Odyssey now has almost 60K on it in just 1.5 years of ownership. Although there are a few issues, I am still able to overlook them because the Odyssey is excellent in so many categories. Here are the issues I have noticed: 1. The front passenger seat is only a 4 way power. It would be great if Honda could make this at least an 8 way power on its upper trim models like some other minivan manufacturers. 2. The front and middle row seats could use some extra cushioning! I use this vehicle for long family trips, so extra padding could make the trip much more enjoyable. 3. The radio interface is just clunky and horrible. The entire system should be redesigned to make tuning and adjusting settings much easier. 4. Honda skipped adding armrests to both sides of the middle captains seats! The only workaround is to place the optional sliding middle seat in the second row down to utilize it as an armrest and for its cup holders. This is just odd and it screams bean counter at Honda. On an Elite trim level, armrests should not be omitted. Despite these problems, I still love the Odyssey. I hope Honda addresses these issues on the new 2017 model so that I am not forced to go with another brand offering all of these features. It desperately needs to stay competitive.

I've owned my 2019 Honda Odyssey Elite for almost a year now, and I'm happy to report that I've only had one issue with it - the battery needed to be replaced. The dealership was very thorough in diagnosing the problem to ensure it wasn't anything more serious. They also handled two recalls with ease. Overall, I have no complaints about the Odyssey. It provides a quiet and comfortable ride, and while some may see the lack of power rear folding seats as a downside, I don't miss them at all. In fact, I find the third row seats in the Honda to be extremely easy to stow and put upright, with just one hand. The second row seats may not be for everyone, as they are heavy and difficult to remove, but they offer great comfort and flexibility with the ability to slide them sideways. Plus, the MPG is impressive - I get around 26-29 MPG on long trips and 17-19 MPG around town. And to top it off, my grandchildren absolutely love it!

    Vehicle year: 1999

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Odyssey Van that I bought brand new in 1999. Overall, it's been a great vehicle, but unfortunately, I did encounter a couple of issues that have been noted in reviews by others as well. Specifically, the transmission went out just over 75000 miles the first time, and I've had to replace it three times in total. Additionally, the rear sliding door on the passenger side has never worked properly, despite many attempts to fix it. After a lot of frustration, we ultimately had to close it for good. I've noticed that many other reviews mention these same problems, and it's disappointing that Honda didn't do more to address them. In my opinion, these issues were related to production rather than mileage, and it would have been great if Honda had lifted the mileage restriction on recall. I believe that quality companies stand behind their products, and unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. Thanks for listening to my experience!

We came across the 1995-1998 Honda Odysseys after reading numerous reviews on Volvos, Subarus, and old Mercedes diesels. These 1st Gens were built from the Accord platform (with the same engine) and were still made in Japan, making them ahead of their time. The 1998 model came with the 2.3L 4-cylinder VTEC, which provides excellent V6-like power. The trannys are much better than what was found in the early 2nd Gen model (1999-2001) due to their Accord platform. We have been using ours for a few months now, and it has been the best car we have ever owned! I switched to synthetic oil/filter, and get 31+ MPG highway on a tank! No gas car made in '09 that seats 7 can even match that!

I've purchased cars for 45 years and unfortunately bought the wrong car 3 times, including a 2017 Toyota Sienna. Recently, I traded it for a 2019 Honda Odyssey and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The Honda is superior to the Toyota in every way. When I bought the Sienna, the new Honda van had just come out and Toyota was offering a good deal. I made the mistake of letting cost drive my decision instead of considering the quality of the vehicle. Although others reported issues with the air conditioning, doors, and lights, I personally had no problems with them. However, the transmission in the Toyota was very erratic and unreliable, unlike the Honda's which is great. The drivability of the Honda is excellent. I've only had it for 2 weeks, but I'm already very satisfied with my choice, even though I took a hit on the trade-in value.
