Honda Odyssey problems

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common Honda Odyssey problems
Based on complaints from Honda Odyssey owners, several common problems have been reported:
- Electric Sliding Door Issues:
- Owners have reported problems with the electric sliding doors, where they may not open or close properly when using the activation button. This issue can require a diagnosis by a technician to identify and resolve.
- Warped Front Brake Rotors Causing Vibration When Braking:
- A common problem is vibration felt when braking due to warped front brake rotors. This condition, known as lateral runout, causes heat buildup in the brake pads and rotors, leading to warping over time. Honda has addressed this by revising brake rotors to be less susceptible to warping.
- Transmission Issues Producing Illuminated D4 and Check Engine Lights:
- Owners have reported transmission problems, including rough shifting that triggers illuminated D4 and check engine lights on the dashboard. This issue can range from sensor malfunctions to mechanical failures, with potential causes being dirty transmission fluid or defective sensors.
These issues, although common among Honda Odyssey models, do not affect all vehicles. It's essential for owners to be aware of these problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

Honda Odyssey 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNRL6H79KB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: My family and I had just gotten on the parkway and the car wouldn't downshift. I noticed the "Drive" light kept blinking and then the dashboard lit up with so many different warning messages. "Emmissions system problem" was the message that stayed on. All of a sudden the car started shifting on its own into neutral, while we were on the parkway. Thank goodness there was an exit approaching and we were able to get off before we were injured in an accident. I have been having battery issues ever since I got this car. Even when it was brand new, sometimes it just wouldn't start. If I wait a little bit, eventually it starts, but I have already had to replace a battery at 30,000 miles because of this. It has been happening again, but when I bring it to Honda and my mechanic, the battery is normal. After doing research, it appears there was a recall on the 2019 Honda Odyssey with an issue relating to the battery connection that causes that transmission to reboot while driving and shift on its own. Honda claims my car was not part of this recall, but this is exactly what happened to me, and I have a 2019 Odyssey. They have had my car for three weeks now and can't find answers to fix the problem. When I first brought the car in, they said the technician was finding "A LOT of stuff." Fast forward two weeks, and they called to say it's not happening anymore so they are ruling it an "intermittent issue" and to come get the car (not fixed). I told them I do not feel safe with my children in that car. I need answers. I contacted Honda Corporate who said that Honda told them the transmission fluid was the reason, and to start with that and see if it happens again. I asked them about that recall and they said "well your car doesn't come up with it." Is it just a coincidence that the same thing has been happening to my car? I asked if they were able to find out why the car doesn't start "intermittently" and they said, "no, it hasn't happened while here."
Honda Odyssey 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: For over a year, my 2018 Honda Odyssey has intermittently hesitated when accelerating, particularly when pulling into intersections or merging into traffic. This hesitation creates a significant safety risk, as the vehicle momentarily fails to respond to acceleration, increasing the potential for collisions in situations where immediate response is necessary. The issue is consistent with symptoms outlined in Honda’s recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 23V-858) involving a malfunctioning fuel pump impeller. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, who confirmed the issue but indicated that they lack the necessary parts to complete the repair. Despite repeated inquiries, the part remains unavailable, leaving the vehicle unsafe to operate and creating an ongoing safety concern. No warning lights or dashboard messages appear prior to or during the hesitation. The dealer has acknowledged the problem, but without parts, the recall remedy remains incomplete.
Honda Odyssey 2018
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When audio system is turned on, a very loud crackling sound occurs, and will continue after audio is turned off. Sirius XM works most of the time (with crackling sound). However, when the regular radio is turned on the audio will work for just a minute (with crackling sound), and then it will suddenly stop working and a message pops up on the display that says "audio connection lost". This also happens when a phone's Bluetooth audio is connected to the car. It triggers the audio system to suddenly fail. There has been other electrical issue with the rear lift-gate suddenly closing, with no way to stop it. It almost pinned my daughter and I on separate occasions. I'm not sure if this electrical issue is related to the audio issue, but as with any electrical issue I worry about the possibility of an electrical fire.

Honda Odyssey 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
- VIN: 5FNRL6H73MB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: After having the Honda Dealership perform an oil change and software update 23-008 (updating the Auto Idle Stop Software) last week, my engine stalled while at a busy intersection (PA turnpike/70 junction) during a road trip. At the long stop light the auto idle function engaged and the engine turned off. When the stop light turned green and I lifted my foot off the brake and pressed the gas the engine shut down and automatically went into Park. I had to press the start/stop button to fully turn off then turn back on the car to get the engine to restart. This is with a giant semitruck honking right behind me. The auto idle feature does not work. It sounds terrible every time the engine restarts after it has been engaged. There really should be an option to allow users to permanently disable it, and not have to remember to turn it off every time they start the car--terrible user experience.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 5FNRL6H76JB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When pressing the accelerator from a stopped position, sometimes there is a need to let off the accelerator and then press it again. There are times when I do this sequence of events and the car doesn’t accelerate but almost seems to stall. Pressing the accelerator does not increase the speed. To remedy, I have been waiting a few seconds before repressing the accelerator to give the van time to shift or whatever it needs to do not to “stall”. This evening particularly, I was turning right on red so I accelerated and then I noticed that the cars on the street I was turning into had started to go so I let off the accelerator. Unfortunately I noticed that I was too far into the intersection and had no choice but to keep accelerating but my van stalled and wouldn’t accelerate when I pressed on the gas for a few seconds. It eventually “caught up” and accelerated but I ended up spinning my tires and “peeled out”.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-21
- VIN: 5FNRL6H9XNB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While placing an item in the rear of my Honda Odyssey mini-van the hatch began to close on me. The safety sensor did not activate and the hatch was closing with great pressure. I was able to slide out before being pinned or severely injured. After investigating why it happened, I discovered and was able to replicate the behavior. The key fob was in my right front pocket at the time I was almost pinned. My house key pressed and held the rear hatch button on the key fob causing it to close. Because the button was pinned down by my other key, the safety pressure sensor failed to activate. I was able to replicate and film this behavior. I was also able to replicate the behavior using my parent's neighbor's Honda Passport. 1. This occurred after turning off the vehicle, and on the first time closing the rear hatch. I have video of being able to replicate the issue available.

The Honda van is an excellent choice. After test driving all the competitors' vans, I found that the Honda van drove the best and was the most comfortable. Not only is the front seat comfortable, but the second and third-row seats are as well. Although we have had some issues with the tires, which we had to replace at a cost of almost $200 each, our service representative informed us that this is only a problem with the touring model and not the others. Overall, the Honda van is an exceptional vehicle.

Vehicle year: 2004
I'm so glad I bought this van! Even though it had 150k miles on it, it's still running great. The only downside is that the V6 engine uses a lot of gas. However, the front seats are really comfortable and spacious, with plenty of legroom. Plus, the trunk has tons of space, making it the perfect family van.

Vehicle year: 2023
The van is great! It has quick acceleration, is comfortable, has a smooth ride, and is roomy. This is actually my second Odyssey. The first one was a 2022 ex-L, which was also a great van, but had one issue - the radio would make a buzzing noise every once in a while. This one (2023) is the touring model, and we had a Navigation issue with it - it was stuck loading the map. However, the issue was fixed with a software update. Overall, it's an excellent product and I hope to keep it for many years. The only complaint I have is that the gas mileage is not great, averaging 16mpg on mostly short trips of 4-5 miles with stop and go traffic, but on the highway it gets 25mpg. I love the van life!

I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are enjoying your 2009 EXL-RES van! The rear entertainment system (RES) sounds like a great feature, especially for long trips. It's great that the wireless headphones allow the kids to watch their videos while the front drivers can listen to music. The Odyssey seems to be a very comfortable and spacious vehicle with good road manners. It's interesting to hear that you were considering the Sequoia, but ultimately found the Odyssey to be a better value for your money. It's great to hear that you are now van converts!

I'm glad to hear that you've had a great experience with your Honda van so far! It sounds like it's been a reliable and comfortable vehicle for your family, which is always a plus. I understand your frustration with the outdated technology and slow wifi hotspot, especially with kids who love to stream their favorite shows. However, it's great to hear that the V6 engine provides the instant torque you need on the highway. It's no surprise that you've been loyal to the Honda brand, given your positive experiences and lack of major issues. Keep up with the regular maintenance schedule and your Honda van should continue to serve you well!

Hello, as a long-time Honda owner, I am disappointed to report an issue with my new 2020 Odyssey. On June 25, 2020, the audio stopped working mid-drive. After troubleshooting over the phone, we had to physically take it in for repair. While there are potential solutions, such as disconnecting the battery, it is frustrating to deal with this issue on a brand new vehicle. I did some research and found that this issue has been reported with the 2018 and 2019 Odyssey models as well. I hope Honda takes action to address this issue. If you are considering purchasing a new Honda Odyssey, please be aware of this issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The steering may feel a bit loose at first and the brakes may take some getting used to. Additionally, the battery and spare tire access are somewhat limited, and the spare tire is not full-sized. It's also worth noting that the tire space cannot accommodate a full-sized tire if you choose to get one. Finally, it's important to keep in mind that there is no roof rack and the price point is quite high.

I was one of the first in America to take delivery on my 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite. Unfortunately, the dealership had not yet been trained on the new technology system, so I still have no idea how to work most of the functions on the computer. I requested a private education session for my wife and me, but it has been over a month and a half, and I have not heard back from Honda. Two weeks ago, my 12-year-old son accidentally broke the front grab handle, and we have noticed some rattles and noises that our previous Honda Odysseys never had. A week ago, the rear passenger door window stopped working, and we brought it to our local dealership. They informed us that Honda USA is aware of the problem with the rear windows on these new 2018 Odysseys, and parts are on backorder. Unfortunately, they have no idea when the parts will be available. Although this new Odyssey has less than 2,000 miles on it, we are disappointed with the issues we have experienced. We hope that Honda can resolve these problems soon, as we would love to continue enjoying our new van.

We bought our BRAND NEW 2022 Odyssey in May 2021. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the transmission just 300 miles into driving it, which left us stranded in an unsafe situation on the highway. The dealership had to replace it completely. Since then, we've had two family road trips, but unfortunately, the van left us stranded both times on our way back home with our two toddlers and dog, without any warning. Despite our disappointment, we hope that the dealership or Honda corporate will take some action to make things right. We understand that these things can happen, but we would appreciate some support. We hope that our experience will help Honda improve their products and services.

I have owned this minivan for 5 months now and unfortunately, I have not been satisfied with its reliability. Although I understand that this car is made in the USA and some minor issues may occur, I did not expect them to happen so soon. In comparison, I have owned a 1999 Honda Accord for 18 years and have only had to replace one light bulb and turning bulb (regular maintenance not included). However, with this 2018 Honda Odyssey, I have experienced a few issues so far: 1. The passenger power sliding door did not open yesterday, despite the motor trying to open it. I tried everything from pulling the outside handle, using the remote control, inside button and driver side main control button, but nothing worked. 2. The auto shut off idling function does not work most of the time, as the engine does not auto shut off when I activate it. 3. The motion sensor from the tail door is also not working most of the time, despite following a video on YouTube. I have only been able to open it twice so far. (Lol) 4. The driver power sliding door also sounds weird now, but I am hoping it won't break. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that they can be resolved soon.
