2000 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2000 Honda Odyssey problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2000 Honda Odyssey, several common problems have been identified:

  • Check Engine Light: Some owners have experienced the check engine light coming on, indicating potential issues with the catalytic converter, fuel pump, and other components. This could be related to ignition and wiring harness issues mentioned by the previous owner.
  • Electrical Wiring Harness Damage: A recall was issued for a wire harness in the engine compartment that could be damaged by contact with a metal pipe, leading to a blown fuse and loss of engine power or electrical components operation. This could include lights, windshield wipers, horn, and the anti-lock function of the brakes.
  • Sliding Door Latch Issue: Another recall involved sliding doors that may not latch properly due to incorrect riveting during manufacture. This could lead to safety concerns, and affected vehicles needed to have the door latch assembly replaced.
  • Dimmer Control Failure: In some instances, the dimmer control for the instrument panel lights could fail, affecting visibility of gauges and displays at night. This poses a risk as the driver may not be aware of the vehicle's speed or potential issues, increasing the risk of a crash. The remedy for this issue involved replacing the multiplex unit.

These common problems with the 2000 Honda Odyssey highlight a range of issues that owners have faced, from mechanical and electrical concerns to safety-related recalls. Addressing these problems promptly and ensuring proper maintenance can help mitigate potential risks and ensure the vehicle's optimal performance.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-02
  • VIN: 2HKRL1867YH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The odometer is often unreadable. This has happening for several months now, maybe over a year, but recently more and more. I looked online and many people are saying this is a safety issue - these readings are used for inspections, maintenance, insurance, etc. Th problem is that there are extra segments highlighted in the LCD display, which makes the affected digits unreadable. Like, if all 7 segments appear showing an "8", that could be any number. If the number shows as a 7, it might really be a 1 -- you can't tell. If it shows a 3, that might really be a 7 or 1. Sometimes there is no actual digit showing, just a random assortment of segments. Date of "first" occurrence below is just an estimate, but it has really gotten worse in the last few weeks.

2000 Honda Odyssey recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2000 Honda Odyssey.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

These vehicles may have received a replacement driver frontal air bag module as part of a vehicle repair. Due to a manufacturing issue, the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air bags in the vehicles, replacing the driver frontal air bag inflator with an inflator of a different design, as necessary, free of charge. • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FRONT UNDERHOOD
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. A WIRE HARNESS, LOCATED WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, COULD BE DAMAGED BY CONTACT WITH A METAL PIPE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A BLOWN FUSE.

Negative 2000 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Roy Price 2024-09-29

I switched to the Honda so that I could feel safe that my wife and children were in a dependable car. However, after experiencing three transmissions within the first 30,000 miles, a cooling system fix, four door handles, and a variety of other annoyances, I cannot recommend this to anyone. Although the van looks good and drives nicely, it is not worth the worry. I understand how important it is to feel secure when driving with loved ones.

  2. Quinton Schoen 2024-09-04

This van has had multiple issues, including auto door problems, a consistent pull to the right, and shuddering brakes. Despite being taken to the dealer 8 times for the door problems, 3 times for the pull, and 3 times for the brakes, the issues persist. The brake pads, rotors, and drums have been replaced, as well as the entire electronic system in the doors. Although a district engineer was sent to investigate and the van was kept for a week on two separate occasions, the problems were not fully resolved. It is unfortunate that Honda Care refused to buy it back, as it misses the Texas Lemon Law by a technicality. It is worth noting that my 15-year old Camry has had fewer problems than this van. Overall, the van has been a disappointment.

  3. Martin Schultz 2024-07-10

This vehicle has some great features, particularly with its interior and engine. However, I have experienced some issues with it. For example, I have had to replace three snapped door handles in just 35k miles, and the brakes failed in the middle of the Lincoln Tunnel with my entire family on board. Additionally, the horn shorted out and locked the wheel at only 4k miles, and the original tires lasted less than 25k miles. The body also dents easily under pressure from small children and hard stares. While I have had some difficulties dealing with Honda of North America, I would recommend considering other options.

  4. Tomas Williamson 2024-05-11

Yes, it's a minivan. However, if you're looking for a reliable and flexible vehicle, the Odyssey delivers. I've owned mine since late 1999 and it has only been to the shop once in over 130,000 miles for a timing belt. That's it. I've been careful to keep up with the maintenance, which is very little other than fluids, battery, plugs, and brake pads. If my 10-year-old Odyssey ever decides to conk out, I'll definitely be buying another one.

  5. Cristopher Turcotte 2024-01-24

As the original owner of this vehicle with only 47000 miles and no towing, I have only driven it normally around Illinois with no hills. Recently, I noticed a slight grinding noise in 4th gear at around 55mph, but no noise in 3rd gear or when I let off the gas. After taking it to the dealer, they diagnosed the issue as a carrier bearing problem in the transmission, which requires a complete replacement. Fortunately, I have an extended warranty that covers the cost of the repair and a rental car. If you own a similar vehicle, I recommend listening carefully to it when cruising around 55mph.

Positive 2000 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Shayne Gleason 2024-11-28

This has been an excellent vehicle. It is very roomy and allows six people to travel in comfort. It also doesn't ride like a truck!

  2. Johnathan Renner 2024-11-24

We purchased this van as a replacement for our old 1995 Taurus wagon, which I used to think was the worst car on the road. Unfortunately, this van is giving it a run for its money. Over the past two years, we've had to replace the front brakes/rotors twice (the brake design is undersized for the car), replace the entire transmission (due to a leaky sway bar), replace the rear wheel bearing, fix leaky valve cover gaskets, and repair defective sliding doors. It's always an adventure trying to predict what will fail next...

  3. Darrick Langosh 2024-11-14

I really enjoy owning this vehicle. My parents have a Grand Caravan and I also test drove the Windstar, but I found that the Odyssey is the best option for me.

  4. Hassan Rau 2024-11-06

This car has been great for road trips as it is comfortable, roomy, and quiet. So far, we have only had to replace the fuel line and the battery, and the transmission has not needed any attention. While the engine could be more powerful and leather seating is not an option, everything else is good for the time being. We plan to keep it for another year because it has proven to be reliable.

I had a Civic that ran for 250,000 miles without any issues. The Odyssey is a comfortable and spacious vehicle. However, there have been some problems with it, such as a constant knocking sound. According to the dealer, Honda recommends using Chevron gas as per an internal memo. The sliding door seals had to be replaced due to sticking, and the front brakes needed replacement at 30,000 miles, likely due to the vehicle's weight. There have also been numerous brake sensor errors and various trim flaws that required trips to the dealer. The vehicle pulls to the right, but the dealer assures me that it is due to the crown in the road and uneven tire wear. Additionally, there have been some rough shifting in certain situations, and the radio controls are blocked by the gear shift column.
