1999 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 1999 Honda Odyssey problems

Common Problems with the Honda Odyssey 1999 Based on Owner Complaints

  • Gear Shaving: Another prevalent problem in the 1999 Honda Odyssey is gear shaving, which occurs when the second gear does not receive adequate lubrication. This lack of lubrication leads to the production of shavings, causing overheating and potentially leading to various other transmission issues. Gear shaving can result in serious mechanical complications and should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Grinding in Reverse: Owners have reported an issue known as grinding in reverse, where the Honda Odyssey fails to engage properly when put into reverse. This problem is often accompanied by a loud grinding noise, indicating potential transmission issues that need attention. Grinding in reverse can be a sign of underlying transmission problems that require professional diagnosis and repair.
  • Lubrication Failure: Lubrication failure in the second gear of the Honda Odyssey's transmission is a significant concern for owners. When the second gear does not receive adequate lubrication, it can lead to serious transmission issues. Resolving lubrication failure typically involves a transmission rebuild to ensure proper functioning and prevent further damage to the transmission system.
  • No Pick-Up: Another common complaint from owners of the 1999 Honda Odyssey is the issue of no pick-up. This problem manifests as lagging performance and reduced power during acceleration. No pick-up can be indicative of transmission issues that affect the vehicle's overall drivability and should be addressed promptly to avoid potential safety hazards on the road.
  • Transmission Lock: Owners have reported transmission lock as a severe problem with the Honda Odyssey. This issue involves gear teeth breaking due to insufficient lubrication, leading to potential transmission lock-ups. When gear teeth become stuck in other transmission components, it can result in significant transmission malfunctions that require immediate attention to prevent further damage and ensure safe operation of the vehicle.
  • Vibrations during Shifts: Risky vibrations and shaking during gear shifts have been noted by owners of the 1999 Honda Odyssey. These vibrations can be a warning sign of impending transmission failure and should not be ignored. Addressing vibrations during shifts promptly can help prevent more extensive transmission issues and ensure the vehicle's continued reliability on the road.

1999 Honda Odyssey recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 1999 Honda Odyssey.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

  • Consequence: IF THE VEHICLE OPERATOR DOES NOT SHIFT TO "PARK" BEFORE REMOVING THE KEY AND FAILS TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERFORM AN INSPECTION PROCEDURE THAT DETERMINES THE AMOUNT OF CYLINDER BODY WEAR. IF SIGNIFICANT WEAR IS INDICATED, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CYLINDER BODY, COLLAR, AND LATCH PLATE. IF NO SIGNS OF WEAR ARE INDICATED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LATCH PLATE WITH A REDESIGNED PART. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 8, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

I purchased this car back in 1998, making it one of the first models. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the transmission, catalytic converter, and some other pollution control kit when the engine light went on at 80,000 miles. After getting it back with the new catalytic converter and kit, the light went right back on. I am left wondering if I even needed those replacements. The CD player also needed to be replaced at 60,000 miles. My experience with the dealer servicing was quite unpleasant. I would recommend asking if something is covered by warranty and also requesting them to check with Honda if anything further can be done. They may not do it voluntarily, as they have stated before. Even after two service managers said they would look into it, I never heard back. Unfortunately, I would not purchase another Honda. I bought it for its reliability, but it turned out to be quite unreliable. Additionally, the service department was not helpful or useful.

My transmission is covered, and I only need to pay $900 for the catalytic converter. Despite this setback, I remain confident in the quality of Honda's products.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our 1999 Odyssey that we bought back in November '98. It's been a reliable car for us, with only a few minor issues. We've had to replace the EGR Valve/Sleeve every 30K miles, which can be a bit pricey at $200+ per visit, but overall it's been a great car. We did have some trouble with the sliding door sticking in cold weather, which was a bit frustrating, but we were able to get it repaired. We haven't had any transmission problems (yet), which is a relief. We did have to make a few trips to the dealer for some recall (warranty) work in the first few years, but that's to be expected. The only other issue we've had is that the front brake pads seem to wear out a bit faster than we'd like. Overall, we're happy with our Odyssey and would recommend it to others. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you that my 99' Honda has been performing well, but lately (at 62K miles) it has been developing a hard shift into 2nd gear. Unfortunately, the dealer diagnosed the problem and quoted me $5000 for a new transmission. It's frustrating to hear that Honda has extended the warranty to only a select few VIN numbers, and mine from Canada was excluded. It seems like Honda has orphaned its own product due to a technicality. Let me know if you have any suggestions or if you've experienced something similar. Thanks for your time!

I have taken many 6-10 hour trips with 4-6 adults and the van was great, providing lots of room for everyone. The van drives solidly and you will definitely feel the difference when you test drive it. While the reliability has been pretty good, the squeaky brakes are driving me crazy. The doors are quite heavy and I would have preferred power doors if given the choice again. Unfortunately, the after-market security/remote entry system (Code Alarm) is not very reliable as you have to be right beside the car for it to work. I wish the van had more bells and whistles. Currently, I am looking for a new car/van/SUV that has the power, space and gas mileage of the Odyssey, but with more features. I am not sure if anything better is out there, but I am keeping my options open.

We purchased our Oddy from an independent dealer. Although we were initially hesitant due to its low price, we were pleasantly surprised by its value. After two test drives, a thorough examination of the carfax report, and extensive research, we decided to purchase the van. While it may drive a bit heavier than other vans we tested, its power and handling more than make up for it. Additionally, the original owner added a luggage rack and a 6-disk in-dash CD player, which greatly increased its appeal. The dealer even replaced the front brake pads and tires, and we had to get new keyfobs for the keyless entry/anti-theft system, but it was all worth it in the end.

I have loved this car from the very beginning and I still do after driving it for 10 1/2 years. It has plenty of room for the four of us and our vacation gear, and it drives like a dream. Although it's getting on in years, it's still going strong. There have been a few electrical problems, such as the clock light no longer working and the driver's door lock motor frying, but that's to be expected with an older car.

This car is such a pleasure to drive! It doesn't feel like a big car, yet it has great size and flexibility. It responds very well under all driving conditions. The interior is laid out very smartly, and the folding rear seat is fantastic. Although there were some minor brake and rear wiper problems, this is definitely the best minivan I've driven. I'm looking forward to it lasting with Honda's reputation for longevity.

I'm so glad to hear that you love your car! It's funny how sometimes our opinions can change when we find the right fit. The Odyssey seems to have won you over! :)
