2019 Honda Odyssey problems

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2019 Honda Odyssey problems
The 2019 Honda Odyssey has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Some of these issues are related to in-car electronics, such as the infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and the DVD player. The infotainment system, which includes audio, GPS, phone, and rear entertainment system, has been reported to have trouble recognizing USB sticks and periodically fails to play music. The Apple CarPlay system regularly disconnects and will not reset until the car is turned off and back on again. The DVD player has also been reported to have issues, such as not recognizing some discs, freezing mid-movie, and not playing any DVDs at all.
Another common problem reported is related to the electric sliding door. In some cases, the sliding door won't open when pressing the activation button, and in other cases, it has trouble closing. This issue generally can still be opened and closed manually, but getting to the root of the problem typically requires a general diagnosis by a technician.
Additionally, some 2019 Honda Odyssey owners have reported vibration when braking due to warped front brake rotors, a condition called lateral runout. This issue is caused by heat buildup in the brake pads and rotors, which can warp over time, especially for some Odyssey models that are more susceptible to warping. This condition can cause pulsating on the brake pedal and vibration of the entire minivan.
Lastly, some owners have reported transmission issues, such as rough shifting, which produces illuminated D4 and check engine lights on the dashboard. This problem can be caused by a mechanical failure of the transmission, a defective sensor, or dirty transmission fluid. To accurately resolve the problem, the use of diagnostic equipment by a mechanic will likely be needed, followed by any necessary repairs and parts replacement.
It's important to note that these problems don't affect most models, but they are the most frequent ones reported by real owners. Prospective owners should be aware of these issues and consider them when making their purchasing decision.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- VIN: 5FNRL6H79KB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: My family and I had just gotten on the parkway and the car wouldn't downshift. I noticed the "Drive" light kept blinking and then the dashboard lit up with so many different warning messages. "Emmissions system problem" was the message that stayed on. All of a sudden the car started shifting on its own into neutral, while we were on the parkway. Thank goodness there was an exit approaching and we were able to get off before we were injured in an accident. I have been having battery issues ever since I got this car. Even when it was brand new, sometimes it just wouldn't start. If I wait a little bit, eventually it starts, but I have already had to replace a battery at 30,000 miles because of this. It has been happening again, but when I bring it to Honda and my mechanic, the battery is normal. After doing research, it appears there was a recall on the 2019 Honda Odyssey with an issue relating to the battery connection that causes that transmission to reboot while driving and shift on its own. Honda claims my car was not part of this recall, but this is exactly what happened to me, and I have a 2019 Odyssey. They have had my car for three weeks now and can't find answers to fix the problem. When I first brought the car in, they said the technician was finding "A LOT of stuff." Fast forward two weeks, and they called to say it's not happening anymore so they are ruling it an "intermittent issue" and to come get the car (not fixed). I told them I do not feel safe with my children in that car. I need answers. I contacted Honda Corporate who said that Honda told them the transmission fluid was the reason, and to start with that and see if it happens again. I asked them about that recall and they said "well your car doesn't come up with it." Is it just a coincidence that the same thing has been happening to my car? I asked if they were able to find out why the car doesn't start "intermittently" and they said, "no, it hasn't happened while here."
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-23
- VIN: 5FNRL6H78KB

- Summary: The Tailgate Control Module failed on three different occasion on my 2019 Honda Odyssey mini van causing the tailgate to fail to be opened by fob or manually. This was caused by water leaking through the roof rail where there was a failure by the manufacturer to properly seal the area between the roof and body.I have two of the failed TCMs in my possession. On 2 different occasions the tailgate flew opened as I was driving at approximately 55 mph.At that time the tailgate could not be closed entirely and caused my battery to run down entirely. The problem has been confirmed by the local Honda dealership and another independent service center.A warning and beeping noice came on as the first sign of the problem.I have photos of the crack and what was done to try to remediate the problem. This problem has been recognized and occurred to many other owners of 2018 - present day Honda Odyssey mini vans.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- VIN: 5FNRL6H71KB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Over the course of the 38 months that we have owned the vehicle, random transmission slippage has been present on this 2019 Odyssey. I mentioned the slippage to the service advisors at the dealership when taking the vehicle in for oil changes. The technician was “not able to replicate the problem.” The slippage was always a safety concern. The van is highly unpredictable on acceleration, making it dangerous to try to pull into traffic, for example, since the driver never knows whether the van will accelerate on demand or not. Other times, the engagement will occur gradually, causing the van to accelerate sloooooowly, despite the driver having significant throttle applied. The display now reads “Transmission System Problem” and WILL NOT shift out of park. I had it towed to the local auto repair shop to be diagnosed. The transmission needs replaced.

- Summary: Car hesitates upon acceleration passing through approximately 2000 rpm. Does not duplicate every time. Dealer will not replace high pressure fuel pump.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
- VIN: 5FNRL6H74KB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The transmission stalls and does not shift into gear from an idol. When this happens, it is a safety issue that creates a 2 - 5 second lag in acceleration, then a lurch forward as the RPMs rev and the vehicle finally shifts into gear. This is a known problem to Honda through multiple complaints filed with them, and is a commonly known and discussed problem on many online forums. The first time we took it into Honda they denied that there was any issue, charged us for a transmission diagnosis, and were very dismissive towards my wife. When i called to inquire about this issue several months later to set up a subsequent appointment, the service coordinator informed me that this issue is known to Honda but they will do nothing to remedy the problem because there is nothing “physically wrong” with the transmission. He went on and on about how I needed to file complaints in order to pressure Honda to do something about this because it is dangerous and he personally knew of other vehicles with the 9-speed transmission that had been involved in accidents because they could not accelerate in intersections. He emphasized that Honda WILL NOT FIX the problem. Not only is this awful customer service, but it is putting my family’s lives at risk. There have been several close calls for my wife when trying to turn left across oncoming traffic, merging into moving traffic, and navigating in smaller spaces. The transmission does not shift into gear for several seconds when trying to accelerate from a stop or from a rolling idol. It is dangerous to us and other drivers on the road. This is a known issue to Honda. They refuse to do anything about it.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-20
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5FNRL6H78KB
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My 2019 Honda Odyssey was involved in a total loss car accident recently on Aug 20 2024. The cause was delayed acceleration due to a fuel pump recall by Honda Motor Corp from Dec 2023; and to date they have failed and neglected to provide the part to repair. For over a year I have experienced delayed acceleration issues with this auto. I purchased this auto new from the local dealer in 2019 and have constantly experienced, reported and paid thousands to repair and address transmission and delayed acceleration issues. Now this resulted in my inability to accelerate from a stop position resulting in another vehicle directly crashing into mine. Researching similar issues reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it appears I'm not alone. In our case - we were in fact "T-boned"
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-30
- VIN: 5FNRL6H72KB
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel pump died while driving on highway causing the engine to stall and vehicle to shift into neutral at highway speed. Also lost power brakes while attempting to pull over to shoulder due to stall. Further, when tow truck arrived we could not shift vehicle into neutral to place it on truck bed as the gear shifter is electronic and requires engine to be on to shift out of park. No check engine lights were on prior to this event. When the event occurred, the vehicle cycled through multiple warnings on the dash. This was extremely frightening as our whole family was in the van and we could have been killed if we lost control or if we were unable to pull over where we did. Thankfully we were in a spot where we could pull off the highway. Fuel pump was previously replaced within the last couple of years as part of a recall. New pump should not have failed this early. Dealership confirmed faulty fuel pump and replaced under extended warranty on 9/4/2024. It is unknown if they kept the faulty part. I am now afraid to drive the vehicle as the fuel pump may fail again.

So, your minivan, aka the mommy missile, is exactly what you expected! It's convenient! The gas mileage is average, and the road noise is more prevalent than anticipated, but otherwise, you love this vehicle.

We have had to take our car back to the dealership three times now, and it seems like we'll have to go again. Unfortunately, the transmission isn't shifting properly and it seems to be getting worse. Despite this being a warranty issue, the dealer has been no help at all. They claim to find nothing wrong each time, and they don't offer loaner cars. To make matters worse, they only offer weekday appointments, which is difficult for us since we live fifteen miles away and both work over forty miles from the dealership. In my fifteen years of working on Honda's, I have never had an issue like this with any car I worked on. Customers who had issues were given a complimentary loaner, and a factory service rep was brought in to go over the diagnosis with the technician. When accelerating from a stop, the car shifts well, but then it gets up to about fourth gear and then bangs. If we accelerate and then let off, it seems to hold back from shifting and then bangs up a gear just to shift. Many of our friends have ridden with us and asked if it's always done that, and we just say yes. We are trying to get it looked at, and we hope to find a solution soon.

The Odyssey Touring and Elite have a 10-speed transmission that is perfectly matched to the engine, providing excellent acceleration that surpasses that of all other minivans and the vast majority of SUVs. The interior is quite nice, with a great entertainment system that sounds amazing. Android phone connectivity works well, and both Google Maps and Waze from my phone are displayed on the screen. The noise level is pretty low for a minivan, and the handling is acceptable. The braking performance and feel are very good for a minivan. It has lots of outlets, including 110VAC, 12V, and USB chargers. Although there are a few negative points, such as the accelerator having a huge dead spot at the beginning of travel, which takes a while to get used to, and the front passenger seat being a little high above the floor for my wife (5' 3

Used for both city and extensive highway driving. It's a very comfortable car with good safety features. I'm happy to report that there wasn't a single vehicle problem in its first full year.

I really love my Honda, but I have had some issues with the batteries on my new 2019 Odyssey Elite. It's frustrating to have to jump the battery after only four months, especially since Honda had already replaced it at three months due to a software recall. If this issue persists and I can't rely on my car to start, it may be the quickest I've ever turned over a vehicle in my 40 years of driving. Additionally, I've found it difficult that the electronic transmission cannot be put in neutral if the car won't start, which means that tow trucks have to drag it out of a garage if it's nose-in and won't start with a jumper battery. While there is a manual switch on the front of the engine, it's not easily accessible as three large plastic pieces have to be removed along with the battery and battery holder. I've had to adjust my habits to make sure all electrical items are off before turning the car off, especially since I can't leave the headlights in the auto position. Despite these issues, I'm still planning to get a new vehicle next year and will spend more time checking out other manufacturers. I'm particularly interested in finding a vehicle with a 360-degree camera.

We bought our 2019 Honda Odyssey in November 2018 and unfortunately had an accident over the holidays, which caused some body damage. The repair company fixed the body and closed the case. However, a few weeks later we noticed a whirling noise coming from the engine at idle. We took it to AutoNation Honda of Lewisville, who replaced the drive belt and tensioner and returned the vehicle around 2 weeks later. Unfortunately, the whirling sound persisted and we had to return the car to AutoNation on March 1st. This time, AutoNation started with simple repairs and escalated the complexity to remove the sound. They replaced the timing belt, idler pulley, crankshaft pulley, oil pump, and eventually the engine block. The car was returned to us over a month later. Throughout the process, we spoke several times with AutoNation for updates and they were very helpful. Although it was frustrating to be without our van for over 6 weeks since purchasing it in November 2018, we appreciated the dealership's efforts to fix the problem. We were also grateful that they provided a temporary rental vehicle. During the process, they suggested that the noise could be caused by the accident, but we encouraged the company who performed the body repair to correspond with the dealership (and vice versa) to discern the cause of the noise. The initial repair company sent pictures to Honda to substantiate their belief that the noise was not associated with the body-damage only accident. During this time, we also contacted Honda Corporate and spoke with Kenisha at Honda Customer Service. Although it took a few days for her to return our call, she was very helpful and understanding when we explained the situation. We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in resolving this issue.Kenisha was not very empathetic and emphatically stated that she saw no work orders in her system on our van and that all repairs would be charged to our insurance. We called our insurance and they confirmed that Honda had not requested authorization to perform any repairs nor had submitted invoices for the work being done. When we approached the dealership again, they assumed responsibility for the noise and repairs and said work orders wouldn't be seen by corporate until the work was completed. We immediately called Kenisha back and shared the information, but unfortunately, she did not respond except to leave a voicemail asking if we had received our vehicle back. We received our van back over a month after its second repair visit (6+ weeks total). We've now submitted a claim with the National Center for Dispute Settlement regarding the TX Lemon Law. During this process, another 'more senior' customer service representative called us and asked if the original problem was gone. I answered yes but told her that we've begun hearing a clacking sound on cold start-ups and would be taking the van in again for repairs. When we saw Honda's report to the National Center for Dispute Settlement, they stated that the customer said the problem is gone, but made no mention of the new problem arising. It would have been great if Honda's rep had included that information in their report. My wife and I have 6 kids and have been faithful Honda owners for years. We purchased this new van instead of used to provide us with reliable transportation. Given the number and depth of the repairs completed to date, my wife no longer has faith in our 'new' van. It's fundamentally a different van and now has an extensive repair history that taints the overall value. We are extremely frustrated and warn potential buyers. We hope Honda will take responsibility and do something in good faith to resolve this issue. We miss the old version of your company...Hi there!

It's unfortunate that the 2019 Odyssey EX has lost some features that were present in the 2016 EX, such as the CD player, compass, and some radio sensitivity. Additionally, adjusting the radio can be difficult while the vehicle is in motion, and the rear hatch is no longer high enough for taller individuals to walk under comfortably. However, there are still some positives to the vehicle, such as the excellent 9-speed transmission, comfortable seats, and improved ride quality. Mileage is also impressive, with 28mph on the highway with only 500 miles on the engine and low ambient temperature. At 14,000 miles, there are no new complaints. During a recent trip through western Nebraska and Colorado, there were some issues with the cruise control and reduced power warning, but thankfully it corrected itself when the temperatures warmed up. Overall, the Odyssey EX is a nice vehicle to drive and has some great features. That problem should have self-corrected when the ice melted in front of the radiator. I will say that the mpg averaged 26 going up the mountains in Colorado and about 30mpg coming back. However, I still dislike the fact that the rear hatch is made for people who are 5'8

I've been a Honda owner for 9 years and I still own my 2010 Honda CRV. Recently, my husband and I decided to trade his truck for the 2019 Odyssey EX-L to accommodate our family of four. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the radio and rear camera within 48 hours of owning the van. After doing some research, we discovered that there were complaints and even a class action lawsuit against 2018-2019 Honda Odysseys and Pilots. We also had an issue with the display screen not shutting off, which drained our battery. When we contacted the dealership, they were not aware of the issue and we were unable to return the van due to the non-

By putting the seat belts on the seats themselves, the second row seats no longer fold down completely for removal. This can make removing these heavy seats quite cumbersome, even with the seat back folded only about 20%. It's frustrating that Honda 'redesigned' the Odyssey when it was already pretty close to perfect in 2017. We're actually considering trading our brand new Odyssey for a 2017-2016 model. It's just a bit disappointing.

Our brand new Odyssey has unfortunately required repairs four times since October 2018. Despite the efforts of the dealership and Honda Manufacturing, the issue has yet to be resolved. We are currently exploring options under the lemon law to address the situation. The problem began at only 800 miles on the car, with the radio and instrument panel cutting in and out, accompanied by a static and popping noise from the dashboard. While several items have been replaced and software updates performed, the issue only seems to be resolved temporarily. This has caused significant inconvenience, as we have had to schedule time to drop off the car, transfer car seats to the loaner vehicle, and take time out of our schedule. As a family, we chose a brand new vehicle to ensure reliability, and we have always thought of Honda as a reliable brand. However, this experience has caused us to question that reliability.
