2022 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H9XNB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While placing an item in the rear of my Honda Odyssey mini-van the hatch began to close on me. The safety sensor did not activate and the hatch was closing with great pressure. I was able to slide out before being pinned or severely injured. After investigating why it happened, I discovered and was able to replicate the behavior. The key fob was in my right front pocket at the time I was almost pinned. My house key pressed and held the rear hatch button on the key fob causing it to close. Because the button was pinned down by my other key, the safety pressure sensor failed to activate. I was able to replicate and film this behavior. I was also able to replicate the behavior using my parent's neighbor's Honda Passport. 1. This occurred after turning off the vehicle, and on the first time closing the rear hatch. I have video of being able to replicate the issue available.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H76NB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: For approximately 1 year the collision mitigation braking system will intermittently activate even when no hazards or objects are present in front of the vehicle. This has happened regardless of speed or any other conditions and has even happened while accelerating. There are no lights or warnings that present before the system activates. This poses a hazard of losing control of the vehicle or potential causing a crash due to the unexpected and sudden braking. This problem is intermittent and does not happen every time the car is driving but has happened enough to bring the car in to the service center. The first time we were told they couldn't replicate the problem so they wouldn't look into it. The second time they acknowledged a know issue with their collision mitigation system and recommended the camera and radar be recalibrated at a cost of $850. For some reason this failure of the system is not covered under warranty. They also stated the calibration is not guaranteed to fix the problem.

It is unsafe to have a rearview mirror that doesn't work and the electronics inside it are unable to work correctly if not mounted properly. The dealership reported that it was a defect. It also is not something they could glue back into place and that the entire windshield needs to be replaced and a new mirror put on and recalibrated due to the electronics involved. This is on a 3 year old car that has 43k miles on it. Flow Honda of Charlottesville provided a video detailing their analysis by the technician. The video can be viewed here on Flow Honda's site: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H9XNB
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: while driving in the through lane, we experienced (this has happened several times) a sudden sharp braking due to a car in a turn lane being stopped and sensed by the anticollision system. We believe this same system has caused hard braking when changing from a through lane to a right turn lane without putting on the turn signal. It also "gently" brakes at times when the lane markings on one side or the other are faint or missing, we think the system sees this as a lane departure. The most recent sharp sudden braking almost caused us to be rear-ended. Along with this there are various issues with proximity sensors around the vehicle. We believe all of these issues are related.

My 5 year old was reaching in as it was closing to grab her jacket. I was in the front seat, about to get out. I heard the door close and her scream. Her hand was stuck with the door fully closed, and I had to push the Open button twice to get it to release her hand. The sensor should have prevented it from closing and did not.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-03
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H73NB
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This is a Braun adapted wheelchair vehicle. It has a lowered floor with a protective under floor. When making a slow turn into a parking lot, a curb was brushed. The passenger side airbag deployed. There was no damage except for cosmetic scratch on outside. There were no injuries. The police attended and couldn't see why the bag deployed. It was examined by Honda mechanic who claimed there was structural damage. The Braun mechanic contested this, finding no structural damage just a superficial scrape to the lowered floor plate. Both the doors and the ramp work properly. The ramp would not work properly if the frame was bent but it works fine. There were no warning signs. Our safety is compromised by driving the van without side airbags. There are a number of complaints on Honda forums about others who have had the bags deploy in slow moving impacts with curbs, speed bumps and potholes. This seems to be a problem in these vans.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H91NB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

We brought to dealer which did a "hard reset" on the media center. This solved the issue for only-3-5 days. The media center is again blank and all systems associated with it (phone, radio, back up camera) do not work.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-14
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H96NB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: While in stop and go traffic on I-75/85 through downtown Atlanta today, my 2022 Odyssey locked up. The dash indicated a battery problem and advised braking and finding a shoulder, however my engine had cut off and the vehicle would not respond when I attempted to follow the directions given. With my hazard lights on I attempted to turn off/on my engine and place the vehicle in Park without success. It would not restart until I turned off the AIS and put my van in PARK in the middle of the Interstate to finally turn back on. I am a skilled driver with ample engine knowledge and even then was barely able to avoid collision because the vehicle was completely incapacitated. Honda KNOWS this is a problem (I learned after my incident today) and need to find a remedy before someone gets killed.

AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-24
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H93NB
  • Components: AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While approaching an intersection, a 4 door sedan in front of me rapidly applied their brakes to stop for a yellow light. I did not see they had stopped in time, so I rear ended them. The impact was so severe, the engine from my 2022 Odyssey was pushed into the firewall and most likely is totaled. If the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) initiated, it did not occur before I slammed on my brakes. The airbags also did not deploy. The car is undriveable. I was taken to the hospital and was found to have a hand injury from most likely my hand hitting the dash. My neck has whiplash and upper back/sternum is sore. I am being referred to an orthopedic surgeon for further hand evaluation. I am confused why the CMBS didn't react quicker and/or more aggressively as well as why didn't the airbags deploy?

The contact stated while reversing out of a parking space, the rear-view camera turned on, however, there was no beeping sound indicating the proximity of another vehicle, causing the contact to hit the front bumper of the other vehicle. There was no injury sustained. The contact stated that his vehicle was dented. The other vehicle was not damaged. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V431000 (Back Over Prevention) that he related to the failure. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H78NB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My wife was driving the vehicle, the vehicle unexpectedly came to a halt, displaying the "BREAK" sign on the instrument dashboard and emitting a beep. As a consequence, the car following her collided with the rear end. This incident occurred on a city street at an approximate speed of 35mph, and fortunately, none of the airbags were deployed. In response to the situation, I reached out to the Honda dealership and subsequently took the car there for a inspection. Additionally, I informed American Honda about the incident.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-13
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H55NB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The air for the last 2 summers hasn’t worked right. Recently it wouldn’t work until being driven for hours then it would cool off. After it would cool down the car would start to get a very strong gas smell inside. After being checked 3 different times we were informed that there was a problem with the fuel line and the design of it. We would have to have it rerouted seasonally. This is very dangerous, they said there was no permanent fix and in the mean time we were left inhaling gas for weeks. Gas inhalation can kill you. This is a very serious problem that needs addressed ASAP. We traded the car in and the dealer has it listed as certified pre owned knowing there are chronic issues with this vehicle.

Negative 2022 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Florian Haley 2025-01-01

I have been a Toyota person for a long time, but I recently tried a Honda because I needed a van for my kids. Unfortunately, I have major regrets about the purchase. The electronics are very glitchy, and Apple CarPlay only works half the time. Additionally, the climate controls only work 2/3 of the time. The van is also quite noisy, and my old Toyota was quieter. I even got warning lights about total loss of steering while going 70mph on a highway, which was not a pleasant experience. Lastly, I find the design of the driver seat to be very uncomfortable and it has caused me back pain. However, there are some positives such as the glasses compartments. Unfortunately, there are not enough cubbies for other things, and the driver armrest blocks the seatbelt buckle. The third-row latch doesn't work half the time on one side. Overall, I am not satisfied with this car and I will likely trade it in within a year, even if it means taking a huge loss. I will not be purchasing a Honda again.

  2. Alphonso Herzog 2024-11-04

During our visit to the local dealership, we had the opportunity to check out the 2022 Honda Odyssey Elite Platinum White. Although we were initially excited, we were disappointed to find that the black interior did not meet our expectations. We compared it to our 2019 Odyssey Touring in Pacific Pewter and found that ours had a classier look overall. While the Elite had a few additional features, we ultimately decided to stick with our current model for now. It's important to note that our decision was based solely on the vehicle and not the dealership.

  3. Sammy Kessler 2024-06-29

The Honda Odyssey EXL has a really nice interior. While the engine and transmission combination is fairly smooth, I've driven better (and worse). Unfortunately, I'm not getting anywhere near the mileage rating advertised for this vehicle, which is my biggest complaint. The ride is also a bit too smooth for my taste, reminiscent of a '79 Caddy. However, I've test driven all the other new minivans and the Honda was at least as good, if not better than the others. The new hybrid Sienna had a loud engine and did not feel as solid as the Honda. The Kia Carnival was on par with the Honda, and so was the Pacifica.

  4. Toni Glover 2024-05-28

I never expected to have a new vehicle that I would be less interested in driving. However, I appreciate the effort put in by the Honda engineers. The car is loaded with electronics, but unfortunately, navigation is only available in the top trim package, which comes with even more features that you may not need. I prefer my Ford Sync with its maps, radio, and phone features. Additionally, I am not a fan of the push-button starter and transmission. I hope I don't encounter the major problems that others have reported. I will consider myself lucky if I don't. I must admit that it was my own fault for not doing my homework before trading up from a '17 Odyssey. I hate the changes, but I take full responsibility for my mistake.

The electronics in this car have been causing me some trouble. The lane assist doesn't seem to work as it should, and the backup warning can be a bit sporadic. Unfortunately, the auto stop feature has never worked for me. I've been to the dealership at least 5 times to try and resolve these issues, but so far, no luck. Interestingly, I tried another new 2022 Odyssey and those features didn't work on that car either. It's been frustrating, to say the least!

Positive 2022 Honda Odyssey car reviews

So far, I'm really enjoying driving this car and it has definitely met my expectations. The electronics are amazing, although I do wonder how it will hold up in the long run. I'm a bit concerned that any repairs could be expensive due to all the onboard electronics.

I highly recommend the Odyssey because it's so versatile if you have kids. The sliding doors are an absolute dream. Kids can get themselves in and out easily. Good for people young and old.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like the safety features are really impressing you, especially the blind spot detection. That's definitely one of my favorites too!

The Odyssey is an amazing vehicle that comes equipped with all the latest safety features, including a backseat reminder to check if there is weight in the back seats. How cool and safe is that? The interior and exterior have a great fit and finish, making it a quiet, comfortable, and roomy ride. I have been driving the Odyssey for 6 months now and have not experienced any issues at all. However, I would love to see the addition of Wireless Air Play. It would be great to have wireless Apple Car Play instead of having to plug in every time, especially since the vehicle already has wireless charging capabilities.
