2014 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2014 Honda Odyssey problems

The 2014 Honda Odyssey has been reported to have several common problems, including transmission issues, battery charge low indicator, broken seat-back heater element, bad oil pressure switch, and problems with sliding doors.

Transmission issues have been a significant concern for 2014 Honda Odyssey owners. Deteriorated transmission fluid can cause a judder while driving between 20-60 mph. This issue is covered by Honda Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) 17-043 and 17-044, which recommend a software update and transmission flush with Honda Genuine ATF-DW1.

Another common problem reported by 2014 Honda Odyssey owners is the "Battery Charge Low" indicator coming on despite the battery being OK. This issue can be resolved by a software update for the battery sensor to improve the accuracy of the Low Battery warning. This repair is inexpensive and can be done quickly.

The 2014 Honda Odyssey has also been reported to have issues with the seat-back heater element. A broken seat-back heater element can cause the driver's seat heater to shut off seconds after being turned on. The element may need to be replaced, costing $280 to $360. This issue is covered by TSB 14-009 for the 2011-2013 Odyssey EX-L and Touring.

A bad oil pressure switch can cause the codes P3400 (rear pressure switch, bank 1) or P3497 (front switch, bank 2). The repair is fairly simple and the parts are not expensive. However, these codes do not necessarily mean that an oil pressure switch is the problem; have them properly diagnosed first.

Sliding doors are a common problem area in the 2014 Honda Odyssey. A damaged or broken cable can cause the automatic sliding doors not to work. The actuators can also fail, causing the doors not to open or close properly. These issues are more common in upper Odyssey trims that have automatic sliding doors.

In summary, the 2014 Honda Odyssey has several common problems, including transmission issues, battery charge low indicator, broken seat-back heater element, bad oil pressure switch, and problems with sliding doors. These issues can be resolved with relatively simple repairs, but some can be costly if not covered under warranty. It is essential to address these issues promptly to keep the vehicle safe and reliable.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-11
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H67EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Repair required piston rings replacements. The vehicle was only 10 years old, 61,000 miles. This is coincidental with the ECO mode shutting down 3 cylinders. As you know, the 2014 model does not have (unlike current models) a special button for the ECO mode, as such, the driver has no control over the feature. While this is a hypothesis, this might have damaged the engine from overuse of remaining cylinders or malfunction of the ones that did not engage in the ECO mode. Research online indicated that other customers reported similar issues. I do not feel it's fair for a vehicle with 61K (sixty one thousand) mileage and 9.5 years old to break down considering the use and the care I have provided for the vehicle throughout its life. I am the original owner and serviced all needed maintenance at Honda or Acura dealerships (can be evident by records on CarFax), and used only Shell or Costco gasoline, never a cheap non-branded gas. The premium that Honda commands for its brand and its recognition failed with this major over $5,000 repair. Thank you!

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Honda Odyssey. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the fuel pump was repaired by the dealer before the contact received the recall letter. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and the contact sought reimbursement for the repair. The manufacturer stated that the reimbursement process could not be completed until a remedy was available and a case was opened. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-23
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H42EB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: 1st incident Fall 2023 Approaching a stop sign, decelerating from 30mph I pressed on the brake to complete the stop but the engine roared, RPMs revved, & the vehicle accelerated, better it lurched, forward. I mashed down the brake pedal as hard as I could but it would not stop the vehicle. All I could do was put it into park. Happens almost weekly, at least 7 times, but not predictably. Once in December, I was approaching a four way stop sign around 3:30pm, I had been driving the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes & the weather was good (no ice, partly cloudy, roads clear & dry). As I came to the stop sign, pressing the brake the final time to complete the stop, it roared loudly, the RPMs jumped high, and the vehicle surged forward through the intersection. I let off the brake and tried to smash it down again, but it wouldn’t go to the floor (only a mild decompression) so I powered through the intersection, thank God no one was coming. I didn’t pull over or turn the vehicle off, I continued going my way home. 15 minutes later, turning into my driveway the brakes worked normally, like nothing had happened. [XXX] I took it to a Honda dealership. They upgraded the transmission & flushed the transmission lines three times. They were unable to replicate the issue & could not detect any codes or communication of an issue in the system. I took it home with no answers. [XXX] I was approaching a stoplight to turn left. I was driving, my brother was in the passenger seat. Weather conditions were good: clear skies, no ice/rain/snow, roads dry & clear. I had been driving the vehicle for less than 10 minutes & I had given it ~ 5 minutes to “warm up” since it’s Minnesota. I met a stop sign w/o issue, but then as I approached a nearby stoplight it surged forward just like before. I pressed the brake to complete the stop, the engine roaring so loudly my brother said “it’s gonna blow up!” Back to Honda dealership on [XXX]. Still no resolution. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-18
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H97EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have now had a flashing check engine twice on my van. The first time it happened next to a well known national mechanic chain while in a car wash. 4 other lights came on all the sudden along with a flashing check engine light. You could feel the engine rumbling. I took it straight to the mechanic next to us and they told me I had a misfire and needed spark plugs and a ignition coil. They did that work and it did temporarily fix the problem. 6 months later the same thing happens. So I took it to a Honda dealer this time. They informed me this is actually a much larger known issue with this engine. The ring on the cylinder shifts/brakes allowing oil to come up and it ruins the spark plug, causing a misfire. They have to do a complete engine rebuild. The mechanic advised Honda knows about this issue and they see it all the time. They also warned me it is dangerous to drive the vehicle when this occurs as the engine could fail and there is a fire risk from the unburned fuel in the exhaust.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-05
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H64EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My vehicle had check engine line was blinking and I took to the Honda. They immediately diagnosed the code as Cylinder 3 Misfire. Upon checking they identified the root cause is Piston ring needs to replace as oil was leaking in the cylinder. I was told that this can cause severe dame to vehicle and passenger as time engine can stop and cause the fire also. I was told that this issue is well known to Honda. When I reached out to Honda they said that your vehicle is not part of the recall and we cannot reimburse the repair expense. I had maintained my car up to date. There was no maintenances service to replace the piston ring at certain mileage. I am single owner. I am baffled on how this was not the manufacturer issue? How was the scope of the investigation on which vehicle impacted determined? Why was my vin number excluded from recall as certainly it is impacted? This issue put me at the risk with safety. Additionally, why do I need to pay for this Manufactuing defects? Is vehicle manufacturer responsibility not applicable when Car is outside of the warranty due to mileage and years?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-29
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H96EB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: . We were driving on a freeway in rural Minnesota at around 70 mph when the tire pressure monitor lit up. There were no warning lights before that.We started to slow down and suddenly the dashboard lit up with multiple warning lights and the engine stuttered and quit. Fortunately we were going downhill and managed to coast onto an exit (without benefit of power steering or power brakes) and coasted onto the ramp shoulder. After we stopped, the battery seemed to have power; the starter motor would begin to operate but it would stop in less than a second, the car would not restart and the dashboard showed warnings about the ESC and ABS in addition to other warnings. When a tow truck finally arrived, we described the symptoms and the tow truck driver instantly said "It's the alternator". He connected a measuring device to the battery, the car started and ran briefly and he confirmed that the problem was a defective alternator. The dealer replaced the alternator fixing the problem. No other repair was needed. Clearly the alternator failure glitched the computer and caused the car to shut down. The fact that the tow truck driver instantly identified the problem from our verbal description is evidence that this is a rather common problem--even if it is not frequently reported. The catastrophic alternator failure in our Honda Odyssey could have caused a very serious accident. We were very lucky that we were able to coast to a safe place. Every car should be fail-safe in case of an alternator failure! I have experienced two other on-the-road alternator failures in the past. In both cases I received a red warning light and the car continued to operate on existing battery charge until I reached a safe place.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-14
  • VIN: 5fnrl5h95eb
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased new Honda Odyssey Van in Oct. 2013 (Model 2014) from Auto Nation Honda, Lewisville, TX. I have done services ever since. On 12/14/2021; I was driving on the highway. The check engine light came on along with other lights. The car was vibrating. I pulled the van on the side of 635 Hwy turned the van off, back on, and it persisted. Eventually van was taken to a workshop. I was told nearly a $6,000 repair bill due to piston rings and oil getting into the spark plugs. The van only has 67,980 miles on it. Upon further review, it appears that this is a known Honda issue with this engine (V6, automatic). There are service bulletins covering the 2011-13 model years. I am reading online that now newer model years are experiencing the same issue. It also reads like this issue will come back... I guess starting on the 2014 model years, Honda changed the piston rings. I don't believe this helped as I am seeing the same issue on my van. I contacted Auto Nation Honda dealer, and I was told I must pay out of my pocket. I think Honda has not fixed this issue for model 2014 Odyssey, manufactured in 09/2013.

I purchased a brand new Honda Odyssey 2014 and have only driven it 30,000 miles. Unfortunately, the steering shakes when I brake. Despite speaking with Honda service, they informed me that they cannot provide any assistance as the warranty has expired. However, I am confident that this issue can be resolved and will seek out a reputable mechanic to address the problem. While this experience has been frustrating, I remain a loyal Honda customer and look forward to continuing to drive their reliable vehicles.

The design of our car has some issues that need to be addressed. However, we are confident in our ability to improve and innovate, and we are committed to providing our customers with the best possible driving experience. We appreciate your feedback and will work to ensure that our future designs meet your expectations.

I bought this car used in 2015 with only 19k miles on it. It was Honda certified for 100k miles and now it has 112k miles. As a family of 5, we have only needed to do regular maintenance such as oil changes and tire rotations. It's important to remember to maintain the transmission every 30k miles, otherwise it may jutter (which is Honda's technical term for shutter or rough shifting). At 100k miles, Honda recommends changing the timing belt, water pump, and spark plugs, which cost $1,400 at the local Honda dealer. However, my local mechanic did it for $1,100. We just put on our third set of tires (General RT43) and so far, they have been great. The only downside is that the overall road noise is a bit too loud for a top-tier vehicle. We also experienced some windshield noise after a replacement, but we were able to fix it by gluing down the plastic moldings on the sides. The navigation and audio controls could be a bit easier to use, but the engine is strong and the ride is smooth. All in all, it's a great family vehicle.

This is our fifth Honda and we have always appreciated the reliability that comes with owning a Honda. However, we have been experiencing some issues with the transmission in this particular vehicle. It jerks violently between 1st and 2nd gear, especially in the Houston heat. Although the problem is intermittent, it happens quite often and has been frustrating. Despite bringing it in 3 times, the dealer has been unable to resolve the issue. We are considering pursuing the lemon-law in Texas. Overall, we have had a positive experience with Honda and hope to find a resolution to this issue soon.

I bought this van brand new in January 2014 after considering Chrysler and Dodge minivans, as well as the Chevy Traverse. It was the best price of the bunch, and I was sold on Honda's reliability. Although we had a few small issues with the car, such as the passenger seat switch draining the battery and the driver's side passenger door not shutting properly, it never broke down on us until recently. Unfortunately, the battery died and wouldn't take a jump. We currently have just over 80K miles on the car and just picked it up from the dealer after $3400 in service to replace the spool valve and alternator. It was also recommended to replace the timing belt and adjust the valves. Since we plan on keeping the car for a while, we did the recommended work and hope for no major mechanical issues anytime soon. I had a 2003 Nissan Maxima that was built in Japan (VIN started with a 'J') that I drove for 5 years and had zero issues with it. I currently have a 2012 Maxima, built in North America, that I've had several problems with, just like my American-built Odyssey. I hate to say it, but Japanese-built cars are more reliable. If I were to ever buy another car, I would buy a Japanese car built in Japan. At this point, I will probably only ever lease future vehicles as the cost over time will be the same or cheaper with less aggravation.

Positive 2014 Honda Odyssey car reviews

The eco mode may take some getting used to, as the car may feel like the transmission is sticking in city driving. However, once you understand what is happening, it's not that big of a deal. On the other hand, eco mode at highway speed can save on gas. If you live in the city and frequently make short stop-and-go trips, this van may not be the best choice as it tends to get bad mileage in these conditions.

We had a great experience with our 2011 model, which only had a minor issue with the 5 Spd automatic transmission vibrating when upshifting. Our 2014 6 speed doesn't have the same issue, but it can be a bit jerky on downshift when cold. The van drives and handles well, and the controls have been improved. Interior noise is comparable to the Sienna. Although it may be more expensive than some competitors, it holds its value well on resale. We leased our 2011 for 36 months and bought it out for $19,300 (CAD). We then sold it for $26,500, earning $7,200 in equity and $1,500 in cash from Honda, which we used to buy a new 2014. We only paid $9,000 out of pocket for a brand new van!

The 2014 Odyssey is a great model with excellent fuel economy. However, it can be quite loud in the cabin, particularly when the odometer reaches 55 miles or more. Additionally, it is a relatively light vehicle. While some may prefer the acceleration and handling of the 2007 Nissan Quest, the Odyssey is still a highly competent and reliable choice.

Hi there! We recently upgraded to this Honda minivan and it's been a fantastic addition to our family. With four kids ranging from 5-12 years old, we needed a reliable and spacious vehicle, and this one definitely delivers. Compared to our previous 2008 Touring, this minivan has a slightly roomier interior while still maintaining a sleek and modern look. We've been impressed with its acceleration and turn radius, and the quality of the interior materials is top-notch. While we haven't quite hit the EPA mileage on the highway yet, we did have a cargo bag on the roof during our last long trip, which probably explains the 23 MPG. Overall, we're really happy with how this minivan drives - it feels much smaller than it actually is!

This is the 2nd Odyssey I own. My last one was a 2002. I'm glad to see that they've added a camera on the right mirror for safety. However, it would be great if they could add one on the left as well. The van is very spacious and comfortable, which makes it perfect for long drives.
