2017 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2017 Honda Odyssey problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Honda Odyssey 2017, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Issue with the Electric Sliding Door:
    • Owners have reported problems with the electric sliding door, where it may not open when pressing the activation button or have trouble closing. This issue typically requires diagnosis by a technician to identify the root cause. The sliding door can still be operated manually in most cases.
  2. Vibration When Braking Due to Warped Front Brake Rotors:
    • A common problem is vibration felt when braking, caused by warped front brake rotors leading to lateral runout. This condition results from heat buildup in the brake pads and rotors due to friction. Over time, the rotors can warp, causing pulsating on the brake pedal and eventually vibration throughout the minivan. Honda has addressed this issue by revising brake rotors to be less susceptible to warping, requiring replacement of both brake pads and rotors.
  3. Transmission Issue Produces Illuminated D4 and Check Engine Lights:
    • Owners have reported transmission issues with rough shifting, resulting in illuminated D4 and check engine lights on the dashboard. This problem can range from a mechanical failure to a defective sensor or dirty transmission fluid. Proper diagnosis by a mechanic using diagnostic equipment is necessary to pinpoint the exact cause, followed by repairs and parts replacement as needed.

These problems, although common among some Honda Odyssey 2017 owners, do not affect all models. It's important for owners to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H36HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Flashing check engine light came on. Took this to the dealership and they found that one of the cylinders misfired and a sparkplug has fouled oil. Piston rings needed to be replaced. This happened because of oil buildup when 3 of the cylinders stop firing when the engine is in "fuel efficient" mode. As I understand it, the vehicle design is to turn off half the cylinders when I drive efficiently and that causes buildup over time. This is a ticking timebomb that will eventually cause this damage and render the vehicle undrivable.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-30
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H62HB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine failure, requiring all new ignition coils and spark plugs (62,000 miles). Car ran well for 3 weeks, and resumed having acceleration issues, engine/transmission judder and check engine light returned. Brought back to mechanic and replaced a failed ignition coil. Was directed by the mechanic to bring to a dealer if the issue continues as it's likely due to a cylinder issue which is causing ignition coils to fail. Brought to dealer with engine and transmission issues. Diagnosed as bad transmission fluid requiring flush and fill 3 times: $850. Told that there are no engine issues as a result of diagnostic. Drove car home (4 miles), and engine issue became worse with flashing check engine light returning light, jerky drive and no acceleration. Brought back to mechanic and diagnosed with piston ring failure requiring extensive engine work, including but not limited to piston ring replacement, cylinder/piston rehab. I have contacted Honda corporate requesting action as it's just outside of powertrain warranty. Claim has been pending for 2+ weeks. Vehicle is parked at dealer pending resultion. Unsafe to drive for mechanical reasons, and car is subject to stall. Only able to drive slow speeds, for short duration.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-23
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H61HB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The car was parked and turned off on a hill, approximately 2-4deg grade. The automated sliding door was opened and the close door function was activated. With the door about halfway closed, a snapping sound could be heard and the door slammed shut. The door slammed with such force that the entire car shook violently. It was clear afterwards that the snapping sound was a cable that was part of the automated door open/close function. Fortunately, no one was in the doorway or near the door at the time. Had someone been in the doorway when the cable snapped serious injury seems likely. The car has since been repaired and is not available for inspection. No inspection of the broken hardware was performed. I am unaware of a reproduction of the issue. There was no warning prior to the snapped cable that anything was wrong with the open/close door function.

IN DECEMBER 2017, I RECEIVED A WRITTEN LETTER FROM HONDA TELLING ME ABOUT THE RECALL AND PUTTING THE RESPONSIBILITY ON THE OWNER TO BRING IT INTO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE SEAT FIXED. I BROUGHT IN MY ODYSSEY IN FEBRUARY 2018 TO HAVE IT MAINTENANCE AND ASK ABOUT THE RECALL. THE SERVICE CENTER ADDRESSED ALL THE ISSUES I PAID FOR EXCEPT FOR THE RECALL ISSUE. THE AGENT PRINTED OUT A BOOKLET FOR ME TO READ AND SAID I CAN FIX IT MYSELF. I TOLD HIM ABOUT THE HONDA RECALL NOTICED I RECEIVED AND HE SAID THEY DO NOT HAVE THE REPLACEMENT PART IN STOCK. I TOLD HIM THAT MY FRIEND OWNED THE SAME VAN AND IT WAS RECENTLY FIXED AT ANOTHER SERVICE CENTER. THE AGENT SAID I HAD TO CONTACT HONDA OR WAIT FOR HONDA TO CONTACT ME DIRECTLY BECAUSE IT WASN'T MY "TURN" YET. RECENTLY, I RECEIVED ANOTHER RECALL NOTICE FROM HONDA IN APRIL 2018 TELLING ME ABOUT THE RECALL. IT DOESN'T SEEM LIKE HONDA'S DEALERSHIPS ARE EQUIPPED TO FIX THE SAFETY ISSUE AND THEY'RE SENDING OUT THESE NOTICES ONLY TO PROTECT THEMSELVES. THE NOTICE REFERRED ME TO YOUR WEBSITE FOR COMPLAINTS. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT I REACHED OUT TO A HONDA SERVICE CENTER TWICE AND THEY REFUSED TO FIX THE RECALL ISSUE.

Negative 2017 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Alberto Pfannerstill 2024-11-27

Although the newer models have less room up front on both passenger and driver sides, the rear seats can still be removed with some frustration. However, the van's technology can be challenging to navigate, especially when it comes to adjusting heating and cooling, music, radio, and video. Despite this, I am confident in my ability to learn and adapt to new technology, but unfortunately, the wireless earphones for the video player have not worked properly. The earphone plugs are located on one side of the car in the back, which can be inconvenient for passengers. Despite these challenges, I remain optimistic and determined to make the most of my Honda Odyssey.

  2. Isaac Runolfsson 2024-11-17

I recently purchased my fourth car, a 2016 Odyssey LX, which unfortunately did not meet my expectations. As a loyal Honda customer, I was disappointed with the quality of the interior materials and the overall appearance of the vehicle. The 2003 Odyssey LX that I previously owned for 13 years and 162K miles had far superior interior quality. The 2016 model lacks a third-row carpet/mat and the carpet finishing is not up to par. Additionally, the AC controls in the cabin/rear are small and the upholstery fabric feels weak and thin. The seats have less padding and are harder/more uncomfortable. While the split cargo seat is a nice feature, I prefer the storage space underneath the bench seat. Despite these issues, I appreciate the split cargo seat and the faux leather fabric behind the front row captain chairs. However, I would have preferred the stowable center tray table between the driver/passenger seat (in the 2003) instead of the current cup holder. Overall, I believe that Honda can improve the quality of the 2016 Odyssey LX to meet the expectations of their loyal customers.Overall, I have always loved Hondas because they are quality made and very reliable. So, when it was time to replace my 2003, I didn't even consider any other brand of vehicle. However, I am disappointed in my 2016 Odyssey, and this will likely be my last Honda. I apologize for mentioning 'cheap' so many times, but that is exactly how I feel about this vehicle.

  3. Frederick Larkin 2024-06-12

We have had some issues with the cooling system in our Honda Odyssey. Despite taking it back to the dealership, we were informed that this is a common issue with new models. Unfortunately, this has made driving in hot weather uncomfortable. We have reached out to Honda Corp for assistance and while the initial response was not helpful, we were eventually informed that the car can take some time to cool down due to the high interior temperature. While this has been frustrating for us, we understand that this may not be an issue for everyone. We recommend that those living in hot climates consider their options before purchasing this car.

  4. Brice Padberg 2024-05-08

I recently purchased a 2016 Odyssey EX, my first minivan, and have been driving it for a couple of weeks now. I have noticed that the ride is quite harsh and jittery, which has been surprising. The wind and road noise are also quite noticeable. I understand that some people like to feel the road, but I feel every single bump and crack in the road. This can be frustrating, especially when driving a vehicle that is primarily used for transporting children. I was also surprised to find that the ride quality did not improve even after reducing the tire pressure to the recommended level. I have read many professional reviews of the Odyssey, but few mention the ride quality. I would advise anyone considering purchasing this vehicle to thoroughly test the highway ride against other minivans, such as the Sienna and Sedona, before making a decision. Additionally, I have noticed that the transmission does not allow the vehicle to coast, which can be inconvenient in traffic. Overall, I would recommend taking a closer look at the Sienna before making a final decision. So to keep the car going at 5mph, you need to keep your foot on the gas. While I'm not sure why this is the case or if it contributes to early transmission issues in Odyssey vehicles, I can say that my initial review was a bit harsh. The Odyssey is car-like to drive, which is exactly what my wife wanted. It's perfect for driving to the local school and playground, but perhaps not the best for highway driving. However, the highway ride is acceptable and the van is comfortable to drive, although it does feel a bit ponderous compared to a car. Some reviewers have said it's fun to drive, but I wouldn't go that far. I have noticed an occasional rattle from the dashboard and that one of the sliding doors does not close flush, which makes me a bit worried about how the vehicle will age. Nonetheless, if I had to do it again, I would probably still have bought this minivan. The interior seat configuration is better than any other minivan if you have car seats, and the gas mileage is better than any other minivan. The VCM allows the van to get pretty decent highway mileage, around 28-30 mpg or so, and is only moderately intrusive. I just hope it doesn't shorten engine life. Overall, the Odyssey is somewhat car-like to drive and has some great features that make it a solid choice for families.

This is actually our second Odyssey, having previously owned a 2005 model. Unfortunately, our 2012 has been quite disappointing. We've had some issues with the left side sliding door, which struggles and pops and only opens about 25% of the time. Despite the dealership replacing a mechanism, the problem persists and we'll be heading back there next Tuesday. While we can deal with the door problem, this past Friday the engine light began flashing and the traction light remained on. After some research, we discovered that this is a major issue that Honda settled a class action lawsuit over. It seems that the VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) is the likely cause, with the piston rings in cylinders 1, 2, 3 and 4 needing to be replaced. Although this was covered under an extended warranty bulletin as a result of the lawsuit, it's still concerning that a Honda engine with only 54,000 miles would need new piston rings. Honda engines are supposed to be the Holy Grail of engines, so the fact that this is a widespread issue has us questioning Honda's commitment to quality. We've heard that a new Odyssey is due out later this year, but by that time we may have already switched to a Sienna.

Seating and comfort are great! Unfortunately, there still isn't a 12v power outlet that stays on. But don't worry!

I really like this van, but I'm disappointed with the AC system. Living in Phoenix, it takes at least 20 minutes to cool the cabin down to 75 when it's 100 degrees or more outside, which happens all summer here. I usually take short in-town trips that are usually less than 10 minutes. I suggest taking an extended test drive before purchasing to ensure you're happy with it. UPDATE - Tempe Honda here in Arizona has been wonderful in helping me love my new van. First, they evacuated and recharged the AC system since I purchased a vehicle that had been on the lot for a long time. That improved it somewhat. Second, they offered to swap for a white van, but after a test drive, we decided it wasn't that different, and my family prefers the red. I asked if they'd throw in the custom fit sun screen for the windshield, and they did. It keeps the dash much cooler when I'm shopping and makes the cabin temperature lower after a few hours compared to leaving it exposed under our intense sun. I'd recommend getting the custom fit shade from Honda when you purchase your van. It makes a huge difference on that large dash!

Great car! It's reliable and nice to drive. I drove it all the way to Florida for 16 hours with no fatigue or issues, and it got 28 mpg.

My odyssey is 2 weeks old and I absolutely love it! It's been a pleasure to drive and the gas mileage appears to be very good. I recently traded in my 2002 Odyssey, which was also a great van with 180000 miles and nothing major. I highly recommend the 2016 Odyssey.
