1997 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 1997 Honda Odyssey problems

The 1997 Honda Odyssey is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include transmission problems, suspension issues, and engine concerns.

  • Suspension Issues:
Suspension problems are another common issue in the 1997 Honda Odyssey. Many owners have reported issues with the suspension system, including excessive bouncing, poor handling, and uneven tire wear. These issues can be caused by worn out suspension components, such as bushings, struts, and shocks, which can result in a less comfortable and less safe driving experience.
  • Engine Concerns:
Engine problems are also prevalent in the 1997 Honda Odyssey. Many owners have reported issues with the engine, including excessive oil consumption, poor fuel efficiency, and reduced power. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn out engine components, such as piston rings, valves, and cylinders, which can result in reduced performance and increased maintenance costs.
  • Rust Issues:
Rust is a common problem in the 1997 Honda Odyssey, particularly around the rear wheel well, front passenger door bottom, and under the rear bumper guard. This can lead to reduced structural integrity and increased maintenance costs, as well as a less appealing appearance.
  • Steering Issues:
Steering problems are also prevalent in the 1997 Honda Odyssey. Many owners have reported issues with the steering, including a loose steering wheel and reduced steering response. These issues can be caused by worn out steering components, such as tie rods, ball joints, and steering gear, which can result in a less safe and less comfortable driving experience.

In conclusion, while the 1997 Honda Odyssey is known for its reliability and quality, it is not without its problems. Transmission issues, suspension problems, engine concerns, rust issues, and steering problems are all common issues that owners have reported. These issues can result in increased maintenance costs and a less safe and less comfortable driving experience. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be minimized and the 1997 Honda Odyssey can continue to provide reliable and efficient transportation for many years to come.

I WAS ALMOST HIT BY TRAFFIC BEHIND ME, AND HAD TO WAIT ABOUT 5 MINUTES TO RESTART AFTER THE ICE MELTED. THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED SEVERAL MORE TIMES THE SAME DAY AND CREATED HAZARDOUS SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE ENGINE WAS BARELY ABLE TO RUN AND WAS VERY ROUGH. UPON REACHING AN AREA WHERE THE AIR WAS DRY, IT RAN FINE. THIS HAS HAPPENED EVERYTIME, I HAVE OPERATED THE VEHICLE IN COOL/MOIST CONDITIONS, YET HONDA CLAIMS THAT THEY KNOW OF NO PROBLEM ON THIS MODEL WITH CARBURETOR ICE. Negative 1997 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Deonte Murphy 2024-01-22

I had the car for over six years before I ran into a deer and traded it in. It was very reliable with no maintenance problems over 118K miles. The flip down seats were great. However, the four cylinder engine had a big problem as it would not accelerate to save your life. If you are considering this car, it is recommended to get a later model that has a V6. I had a scary experience on the highway because of this.

Positive 1997 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Dillon Hoppe 2024-10-25

We purchased this vehicle in 2000 because new ones were not available. We have been sold on Honda products ever since. Undoubtedly, our next vehicle will be a new Odyssey or Pilot. We have only experienced a couple of minor issues, including a door actuator and a broken engine mount. However, we have not had any other problems with this vehicle. On long trips, we average about 22 mpg. We typically travel from Atlanta to Indiana or Ohio twice a year with our 2 children. The room is good, but the power is kind of on the low side.

  2. Ward Rohan 2024-09-17

I bought this van based on the positive reviews of others and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It has been incredibly useful for moving both items and people, and we've even taken it on a few trips. This van is truly versatile and I plan on keeping it for a long time.

  3. Flavio Boyer 2024-09-04

This has been a wonderful car for a small family. It is very easy to drive and to get the family comfortable in. The rear seat is also very easy to lift up and folds flat into the floor, which makes me feel like I'm driving an SUV instead of a van!

  4. Abelardo Murazik 2024-08-16

This is the second '97 our family has owned. I'm using it for my sales position, so I'll be spending a lot of time in it. I love how easy it is to get in and out of, especially since the seat is higher than my Mark VIII. Unfortunately, the ABS light was on when I bought it and I found out that the ABS modulator needs to be replaced, which costs $1500.00. It seems like this is a common issue for cars with 80,000 to 120,000 miles. I'm still deciding whether or not to fix it. Other than that, I really appreciate the dual air and the great reliability of this car, as well as our previous one. The quality of workmanship is pretty impressive too, except for the ABS malfunction.

  5. Osborne Raynor 2024-08-05

I'm so glad I bought my Odyssey online a year ago - it's been a wonderful surprise! I drove it from Sarasota, FL to New Orleans with 89000 miles on it and didn't have a single problem. With three kids, we really put this van through its paces, but it's held up like a champ. I'm always on the lookout for another pre-1998 model, since the 4 cyl has plenty of power and great gas mileage. Unfortunately, it's no longer available, so I'm sticking with the past. After a disastrous experience with Mitsubishi, I feel like I made a smart choice with Honda.
