2008 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2008 Honda Odyssey problems

The 2008 Honda Odyssey is known for several common problems, primarily related to its paint, oil consumption, battery drain, and climate system.

Bubbling and peeling paint is a common issue in the 2008 Honda Odyssey, with owners reporting this problem around 100,000 miles. The paint that is not properly cared for will fail eventually, and repainting affected areas can cost around $1,000 per panel.

Excessive oil consumption is another issue that affects some vans at approximately 120,000 miles. The source of the issue is usually the VCM cylinder deactivation system. Most owners either leave the system off or top off the oil regularly.

Excessive battery drain is mentioned by owners at about 55,000 miles. The air conditioning relay is a common source, and replacing the part costs about $80.

The climate system, specifically the AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, and heater system, has various issues reported by owners. These include electrical failure, refrigerant leakage, and problems with the automatic climate system. Diagnosing and repairing these issues can be challenging, with some owners visiting multiple repair shops and encountering difficulties in diagnosing condenser leaks.

In addition to these common problems, there are 5 recalls for the 2008 Honda Odyssey, including the fuel pump cover cracking and leaking, as well as brake pedal performance issues that increase braking distances.

When considering the 2008 Honda Odyssey, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and factor in the costs of potential repairs and maintenance. Despite these problems, the 2008 Honda Odyssey is still considered a reliable vehicle with a long lifespan, with many owners reporting high satisfaction and few major issues.

  • VIN: 5FNRL38498B
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On my car there was a recall on the fuel pump filter housing. I've been to a dealer with this where they didn't replace the case. The car started to smell like gasoline. I opened the pump cover and saw a crack in the pump filter housing(is in the picture).I reported it to the dealer(honda Hamilton NJ) but they dismissed me saying it was not their problem because they did not replace the part. I reported it to honda usa where after three weeks they told me the same thing. On their website it clearly states "HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER SET ON THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY...". My question is why they don't replace the filter housing when it says it's a fire hazard. Thank You

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • VIN: 5FNRL38718B
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: VAN SIDE SLIDING DOORS HAVE REAR LOCKING LATCH ACUATOR THAT FAILS. UNDER POWER CLOSE, THE REAR OF THE DOOR WILL PULL IN, LATCH, THEN UNLATCH AND RELEASE THE REAR OF THE DOOR. WITH POWER TO DOORS OFF (FUSE #13 REMOVED) THE DOOR REAR LATCH WILL NOT ENGAGE AT ALL. THE DOOR WITH A FAILED REAR LATCH WILL ALLOW THE DOOR TO SLIDE OPEN COMPLETELY ON ACCELERATION, SLAM FORWARD BUT NOT LATCH ON BRAKING, AND WILL ALSO SLIDE OPEN AROUND A CORNER. THIS HAPPENED TO ME WHILE I HAD 2 CHILDREN IN THE CENTER SEAT, AT THE SLIDING DOOR OPENINGS. DEALER WANTS $511 PLUS TAX, AND THERE IS A REBUILD SERVICE FOR THE REAR LATCH ON EBAY FOR AROUND $90, PROVING IT IS A CHRONIC, WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM. AS A SIDE NOTE, IF THE 7.5 AMP FUSE IS LEFT INSTALLED IN SLOT 13 FOR SLIDING DOOR POWER, THE BATTERY WILL DISCHARGE OVER NIGHT. THE DEALER WILL NOT GUARANTEE I WILL NOT HAVE A POWER DISCHARGE AFTER THE REAR LATCH (MY LEFT SIDE DOOR IN MY CASE) IS CHANGED, AND FUSE 13 IS REINSTALLED. I'M GLAD MY KIDS WERE STRAPPED IN WHEN THE DOOR FLEW OPEN THE FIRST TIME. THE DOOR WOULD CHOP OFF A HAND IF IT SLAMS SHUT WHILE BREAKING THE VEHICLE. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL ISSUE, AND HONDA SHOULD BE MADE TO RECTIFY THE REAR LATCH (UNLATCHED) ISSUE. Negative 2008 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Murray Batz 2024-09-22

I have owned my Odyssey since 10-08. My husband and I thought we were buying a reliable vehicle for our family, but unfortunately, we were proven wrong. While driving with our two children, the van suddenly accelerated on its own when we hit the brakes to slow down. We had to fight to avoid hitting the turning car in front of us. We have taken it to the dealership six times to fix the problem, but it has not been resolved yet. Although this isn't a constant problem and the dealer cannot diagnose it, we are still scared to have our kids in the van. Additionally, we have experienced air leaks, wind noise, and interior lights coming on for no reason. We hope to find a solution soon.

We've had this car for 1.5 years and so far, we're pretty happy with it. We haven't had any mechanical problems yet, which is great. It's also very spacious and can comfortably fit the whole family, including the in-laws. However, we did notice that the plastic panels along the outside vertical edge of the driver and passenger doors rattle badly at high speeds. We were able to fix this issue with some body shop tape. Another minor issue we encountered is that the rear seats are a bit difficult to access when child seats are installed in the middle row. Additionally, the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) light comes on to inform us when we're close to needing an oil change, but we think it should only come on when there's a problem with tire pressure, not for oil changes. Overall, the car gets decent mileage at around 20mph.

During the first 3 months, the van had to be taken to the dealership several times, totaling 7 weeks. Unfortunately, the windows and doors were making such loud rattling noises that my 5-year-old son thought it was hailing outside on a sunny day. On the bright side, the space inside the van is truly awesome. The DVD and Navigation functions work without any issues, and the rearview camera, although a bit strange and deceiving, is still helpful. As we are almost out of car seats, we are considering switching to a less noisy SUV.

    The transmission has been problematic.

I have owned the van for about a month and have driven 3K miles on a trip. On the positive side the van is nice to drive, looks good and has power. On the negative side the road noise is excessive. When passing a truck you can hardly hear anyone else in the car. The noise from bumps in the road is also very loud. Automatic shifting is rough. The front seats are not very comfortable compared to my 2005 Dodge van. The radio sound is very good but it has the poorest station range of any car I've owned in the last 20 years. The little mirror on the sun glasses holder is useless. It needs a compass. At this point I'm not too thrilled about this purchase.

I've owned three Odysseys in the past - an '07 EX-L DVD, an '08 EX-L w/NAV & DVD, and a '12 Touring Elite. Out of all the cars, SUVs, and minivans I've had, the '08 Odyssey was my absolute favorite! It was even better than the '12 Odyssey Touring Elite we leased. I never had any issues with it, and it had practical features and a comfortable layout that made driving it a breeze. I could go on and on about how much I loved that van. The only reason I don't still have it is because I was having trouble driving it in the snow (I lived in Denver at the time), so I traded it in for a 4WD Nissan Armada. I regretted that decision almost immediately, and I still miss that van three years later! Looking back, I really wish I had tried putting on a better set of tires before trading it in. :)

I love my van! I tried the Toyota, but it didn't impress me as much as mine. While you can get more for your money, the quality of mine is superb. I prefer getting the basic model and making the right choice. However, Honda's basic model comes with a lot, and Toyota offers some of my basics as options. The gas mileage is great too - I'm getting 19/20 mpg. We all need that with gas prices being what they are. Personally, I'd rather drive a van than any SUV.

This van is incredibly comfortable to cruise in and handles like a sedan. It's also very quiet and has a wide range of options available, although some of the settings may not be immediately obvious. Additionally, it gets an impressive 20-28 mpg on fuel consumption.

I see that you owned a 99 Honda Odyssey for 9 years. That model year had many recalls, including a transmission replacement. However, it's great to hear that you purchased a new 2008 Honda Odyssey and have had good luck with it so far, with over 65,000 miles on it. The soft brake issue recall was resolved, and it's wonderful to hear that it was a great travel vehicle for your 4,000-mile trip to Colorado through the Rockies and to the East Coast.

This is the first Honda we purchased. Before this one, we had GM mini vans, but unfortunately, the last one was not a good van. We have owned this van since Feb. 2008 and have put lots of mileage on it. Last summer, we had 3 adults and 3 children with a roof top carrier and still averaged 25 mpg driving at 70 mph. We added the rear sensors, and they have been a great help when parking the van. The camera is also a great feature. The only issue we have had is with the passenger window rattling and wind noise when going 55+. Overall, it's a very good vehicle.
