2020 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

For those considering a purchase, I'd particularly recommend 2010-2013, 2015-2017, and 2021-2023 models as the Honda Odyssey's best and most reliable years. It'd be wise to avoid the 2nd generation, early 3rd and 5th generation, and 2014 Honda Odyssey models.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H23LB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY GUAGE CONTROL WENT BLACK (It's the screen behind my steering wheel that tells me how many miles the car as, the odometer and speedometer (now don't know my speed!) and has maintenance info that is missing from my view now too! This is a serious safety issue! It also activates cruise control. They want to charge me $2K to replace it. The car is a 2020 with about 32K miles on it! And charged me a $180 diagnostic fee. Incidentally, the radio screen went black a few days later, but when I pressed the brightness button, it came back on. BTW, there is a little stick in front of the screen (maybe for the clock?) and it just spins and spins. Maybe that is simply broken and the brightness is turned down all the way? Though they stated the guage control needs to be replaced entirely. There is not a safety recall on this presently for my VIN and no software updates.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H75LB
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Sliding door stopped operating as a result of "badly torn inner bushings" which required the door motor and control arm to be replaced. This occurred just from normal use of the vehicle. At certain points, the opposite door also began to exhibit the same symptoms as the other. Furthermore, this problem did not just happen overnight, these components should be made part of a normal inspection just like the cabin air filter. Why is that inspected but the bushings of a sliding door are not? Could it be so the manufacturer or service department is hoping for these components to break so that it can gain business and work?

I took it in to the dealership, and I was advised that the van's multipurpose camera located behind the rear view mirror needed to be replaced. I have researched this issue and this appears to be very common with the Honda Odysseys. The vehicle is less than 48 months old, and it's already an issue? Wondering if this can be logged so that it can be recalled.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-30

  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: It seems our multi-purpose camera is malfunctioning and therefore causing all of the systems to go offline and light up on the dashboard when we turn on the car. It seems the only solution is to replace this. That seems insane that we should have to pay for this if this is a major safety feature of the car and one of the reasons we purchased the vehicle.

THEY DID NOT GO INTO FURTHER DETAIL. I STARTED GETTING A MESSAGE ON THE DASH PANEL THAT THE POWER TAILGATE SYSTEM HAD A PROBLEM. i ALSO GOT MESSAGES STATING THE THEE REVERSE COLLISION SYSTEM STOPPED WORKING, TRANSMISSION SYSTEM HAD PROBLEMS, THE KEYLESS STARTING SYSTEM PROBLEMS. THIS WAS HAPPENING AFTER A RAIN OCCURANCE. I TOOK IT TO THE HONDA DEALER, THEY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS. i TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE FOUND WATER IS GETTING THRU THE ROOF RACK RAIL GULLEY, LEAKING DOWN THE BACK DRIVERS SIDE INTERIOR PANEL ON TO THE TAILGATE CONTROL MODULE. i HAVE TO TAKE THE VAN TO A BODY SHOP, SO THEY CAN FIX THE AFFECTED AREA. i HAVE THE PART MY MECHANIC REPLACED. IT IS CLEARLY WATER DAMAGED. THE DAY HE FIXED MY VAN, IT HAD RAINED AND MALFUNCTIONED AGAIN. RIGHT NOW I HAVE THE MODULE HANGING IN THE CARGO AREA, OUTSIDE OF THE INTERIOR PANEL, SO IT DOES NOT GET WET WHEN IT RAINS.

  • VIN: 5FNRL6H7XLB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2020 Honda Odyssey is exhibiting problems with the infotainment system. The system will reboot randomly, disabling all functionality of the rear back-up camera, the audio system, the clock, and all other associated features of the "infotainment" system. The screen will display "NETWORK CONNECTION LOST" and "MOST NET OFF" prior to unprompted reboot. System will reboot continuously following failure. Issue is ongoing for the past few months. This issue is the exact issue covered by the NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V439000. Possibly covered under 20V440000. Other 2020 Honda Odyssey vehicles are covered by this recall, however my VIN was not covered. I called Honda, and was not assisted in the slightest with the issue. • Consequence: A delayed or inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners that updated software is available. Owners have the option to either follow the mailed instructions to download and update the software for free, or visit a dealer to have the software update performed, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is Y7Y.

  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport, and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles. • Consequence: A power sliding door that fails to latch may open while moving, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power sliding door outer handle cables, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is A88.

  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the third row seat accessory power outlet wire harness for damage, replacing it as necessary. If no damage is found, the dealer will apply protective tape and re-route the harness. All repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 16, 2020. Negative 2020 Honda Odyssey car reviews

My 2020 Odyssey EXL-nav has been in the shop for 43+ days and counting due to the same audio cracking issues that other owners are experiencing.

  2. Chadd Smith 2024-05-21

Although the van runs and drives great, it is important to note that the Infotainment system has been problematic and cannot be fixed, rendering the van unusable. It is recommended to research the MOST bus network before making a purchase. Additionally, there have been issues with the sound system, including the unpleasant sound of rocks hitting the vehicle when played through the 9 speakers. The radio has also been known to malfunction, sometimes not turning off even when the van is shut off, and displaying a 'tuner unavailable' message. It is worth noting that this issue has been reported to occur between 2018-2023. Despite these issues, the van remains a reliable mode of transportation with no other complaints.

I purchased the car new, but unfortunately encountered issues almost immediately. The trunk seal was defective, resulting in water damage to both the trunk and its contents during rainy weather. Additionally, the car has been subject to 4-5 recalls during my 18 months of ownership. Despite my efforts, the speaker and infotainment issue remains unresolved, and Honda has yet to provide a solution. I am currently experiencing crackling and popping sounds from the speakers, and will continue to pursue a resolution until the issue is resolved.

A few weeks later, I tried using RES but it wasn't working. I took it in a couple of times, but the local technicians had to do a call with Honda technicians and unfortunately, it didn't go anywhere. I have been living with this problem for over a year now. These electrical issues are only piling up by the day. If it weren't for the chip shortage and dearth of deals, I would have gotten rid of this car by now. However, it still drives okay.

Hey there! It's worth noting that Honda is currently facing a major issue, but they seem to be in denial mode.

Positive 2020 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Pablo Gutmann 2025-01-03

A great family car that offers a very good ride, with great pickup, comfortable seating, and an overall pleasant design.

  2. Lemuel Schimmel 2024-11-25

I love this car! The mid row's multiple configurations are really nice, and the drive is smooth, quiet, and comfortable. For future improvements, it would be great to have individual closure options for the dash vents. Additionally, the blind spot monitor would be better suited on the mirrors rather than on the inside of the car. Although it is easily seen when a vehicle approaches, I always have to move my eyes from the mirror to the monitor, which takes a fraction of a second but is still noticeable. Overall, I still prefer this car over other 7-8 seaters.

  3. Dino Mohr 2024-11-23

Honda should be ashamed. The little stick to hold up the hood is not enough. The hinges are valuable and should be able to keep the hood up. I left my hood up overnight while camping to prevent critters from getting under it, only to wake up in the morning and find that the wind had blown the hood back against the windshield, causing a crack from top to bottom. This is unacceptable.

  4. Monserrat Steuber 2024-11-11

We've never purchased such a lovely car!

  5. Percival Shanahan 2024-10-08

Could you please check the seating layout in the back of the van? Our seats slide side to side instead of forward and back.
