2005 Honda Odyssey problems
For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2005 Honda Odyssey problems
The 2005 Honda Odyssey has several common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Paint and Trim: The paint and trim on the 2005 Honda Odyssey have been reported to have several issues, including chipping, fading, and peeling. This can be a cosmetic issue, but it can also lead to rust and other damage if not addressed. Owners have reported issues with the paint on the body and frame, as well as the fuel door sensor, which can prevent the second row door from opening.
- Steering and Suspension: The steering and suspension system in the 2005 Honda Odyssey has been reported to have several issues, including problems with the power steering pump, steering gear, and suspension components. Owners have reported issues with steering noise, difficulty steering, and vibrations while driving. This can be a safety issue and should be addressed as soon as possible.
- In-Car Electronics: The in-car electronics in the 2005 Honda Odyssey have been reported to have several issues, including problems with the keyless entry, wiper motor, tire pressure monitor, interior and exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, and wireless charging pad. Owners have reported issues with the keyfob no longer working to open the rear sliding doors, the sensor falsely reporting that the fuel door was open, and getting the vehicle to start being sporadic and unreliable. This can be a convenience issue, but it can also lead to safety issues if not addressed.
- Transmission Problems: The transmission in the 2005 Honda Odyssey has been reported to have several issues, including vibrations, feeling like the transmission isn't shifting up or down, the check engine light coming on for transmission codes ranging from P0700 to P0730, and the "D" on the gauge cluster flashing. This can be a safety issue and should be addressed as soon as possible. If the transmission fluid is very low or looks burnt and dirty, it may need to be replaced. If changing the fluid doesn't fix the problem, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely.
- 3rd Row Seating Won't Fold: The 3rd row seating in the 2005 Honda Odyssey has been reported to have issues with the latch that releases the seat so it can be folded down. Sometimes this latch fails, causing the seat to not release. This is because the cable between the latch and the handle can stretch and fail. Every time the handle is pulled, the cable is stretched. If the seat won't release when the handle is pulled, the cable may need to be replaced.
- These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2005 Honda Odyssey. It is important to address these issues as soon as possible to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.
Is a 2005 Honda Odyssey a good car?
Great performance, comfort, and on the road reliability. Maintenance costs a little high however with expensive motor mounts, and A/C Compressor failures. Easy to work on yourself if inclined. Overall great family mover, lots of road trips in our odysseys over the years.
What is the common problem of Honda Odyssey?
Transmission Issues
The most important issue on this list is related to the transmission. Unfortunately, Honda Odyssey transmission problems have been reported by drivers over the years.
How long can a 2005 Honda Odyssey last?
Average Mileage and Longevity
On average, a well-maintained Honda Odyssey can last for 200,000 miles or more.
What years did Honda Odyssey have transmission problems?
Best I could read when advising was that the whole 99-04 generation was at risk. I think all the Honda's like 98-05 may have transmission issues with the V6 and heavier models being most prone to problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: 5FNRL388X5B
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I bought the 2005 Odyssey van in 12/2015. It now has 192,426 miles on it. Three or four times every year since I bought it, the engine will suddenly surge when coming to a stop sign or light, with my right foot on the brake pedal, braking and slowing the van for the stop sign or light. The engine revs to about 5000 or 6000 RPMs. It is as if the engine is flooring the gas pedal. Every time, I have been able to push the brake pedal down hard, even though the car continues to slowly roll forward, and shove it into neutral. I have to then tap the gas pedal to stop the engine accelerating. It then goes back to idling normally. Note, it even happened to me one time when I put it into reverse while parking! So very scary each and every time it happens. On [XXX], I took the van to Don Jacobs Honda Dealership, Lexington, KY. They said there were no reports of this ever happening to anyone else. They charged me $3216.06, with most of the cost for a new timing belt/water pump and a valve adjustment. When their repairs did not solve the problem, I called them. They said they would like to put a monitor on the van and drive it until the surge happened again. I told them to let me drive the van with the monitor, as the next surge might not happen for several months, and I needed to drive the van on a daily basis for work. They said they weren't allowed to let customers use the monitor! I finally had time today to research the surging problem. I noticed on [XXX] that this problem with Honda has never been figured out or fixed! And it keeps happening on even newer Honda Odysseys! I now have the resources to quit driving this van. I would be willing to donate the van to the NHTSA so that they may research and try to figure out how to stop this defect! No telling how many people have been injured or killed due to this defect. TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-27
- VIN: 5FNRL38725B
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I Purchased Cooper Evolution M+S 235/65 R16 tires that I purchased from Tire kingdom at 220 Linto BLVD Delray Beach FL. 33444. The set of tires have low miles on them and tread wear is great. When I got the tires I felt a vibration in the tires from the front pretty quickly. I had my whole front end of my car replaced including beairings, no help. So I spent money and replaced the 2 front tires with the same tires and they were very young tires and a wheel alignment and the shaking was mitigated in the front but the car still vibrated slightly. The wheel alignment had the steering wheel off center so I went back another wheel alignment to correct and I mention to them the car is vibrating still if they can inspect the tires and when we looked the front LH tire had tread seperation which looked like someone took a knife andtried to carve the tread at the seem off the tire it went in about 3 inches plus. Tire kingdom accused me of hitting something I was like we barley drive this car and why would and I hit absolutely nothing. So they analyzed it and prorated me another tire of the same brand. So now we are on 7 new tires for one mini van that barely gets driven. I went to Orlando and my back rear of the van was vibrating the last 10 miles I had to take the side streets. I went to Walmart and purchased brand new Good years for my van and there is now zero vibration I love it. My my van has been vibrating the day I got the Cooper Evolutions and I went through 7 tires a new front end and replaced rear spindles because I could believe tire with such amazing tread life would vibrate a car like that. If I went for a prorated #8 tire I would still have vibrations. I called cooper tires to complian they gave me a claim number 2003880477 and said bring to tire kindom who refused the tires. We called back Cooper who only again said bring to tire kingdom . I have all 4 tires waiting to be inspected with the 4th tire completly out of shape without air in it. Tire kindome no help

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-22
- VIN: 5FNRL386X5B
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey. About 6 months ago the drivers side sliding door fell off the tracks. This happened while we were trying to close the door but it would not slide at all. We were out at a restaurant and it was imperative that the door had to be shut because it was not safe to drive in that condition. We were able to somewhat put it back on but it can not be used at all at this time. When the door fell off, it gouged the side of the van, damaged the gas filler door, and the rear door is hard to close. I don't know if its closed or not until I get in the car and see that the indicator light on. Also, the car alarm goes off on its own even though my son disabled it. It's very disruptive. After do some research, I have learned that this is an ongoing problem with Honda Odysseys. Honda needs to be held responsible because this is obviously a manufacturer defect. I can not afford to spend $1000 to replace it nor should it have to spend money to fix it.

Negative 2005 Honda Odyssey car reviews
Positive 2005 Honda Odyssey car reviews
-
The car is above average overall. If I had a complaint, it would be that the Variable Cylinder Management gets really loud and it sometimes vibrates at lower speeds. I'm not sure if this is just my vehicle only. Also, when I accelerate past 35 mph, the sound in the cabin makes a whining noise.
-
This is the best minivan available for the cost. However, please note that the noise can be unbearable if you open the sliding door windows without at least cracking the front windows. It can be quite loud and even painful. Additionally, some of the 'safety features' can be a bit annoying. For example, if I unlock the car with the remote from inside the house, it relocks itself before I get to it. Despite these minor issues, I would still buy it again. The gas mileage is not great, but overall it's a great value.

I recently purchased my son's 2005 Honda Odyssey, which is actually my second Odyssey after owning a 2001 model. I absolutely love this vehicle, but unfortunately, I've had some trouble with mice eating the electrical harness. According to the Honda dealer, this is a common issue. I'm hoping that Honda's designers can come up with a solution to prevent this from happening in the future, such as putting a screen around the harness. As someone who uses my car every day and keeps it in a garage, this is a very frustrating problem. Could you please provide me with some advice on how to prevent this from happening again? Thank you so much!

I noticed that when there is an outside wind of 12 to 18 mph, the interior cabin noise is more than I expected, especially from a Honda known for Fit & Finish. Surprisingly, my Dodge minivan had less interior noise than the 2005 Honda EX. The Honda dealer acknowledged that they have had some complaints about interior wind noise or whistle. They added additional sealant around the front windshield, which seemed to help somewhat. Nevertheless, I still encounter more interior wind noise than I believe is acceptable. Do any of you share the same annoying problem? Are there any other remedies besides adding additional caulking around the edges of the windshield?

This car is truly amazing! Honda has paid attention to every detail and made improvements in every area. The body roll is minimal, if not non-existent, and it drives like a dream. While there are a few minor features that could be improved, such as the memory seats only memorizing seat positions and not rearview mirror positions, and only one power window having an auto up and down feature, overall it is an incredible package. At a cost of 42k (drive out), it's definitely worth it!

If you're considering purchasing a Honda Odyssey, I would advise against it based on my personal experience. My 05 Odyssey has had numerous major problems, including issues with the torque converter, catalytic converters, power steering pump, AC condenser, DVD system, struts, engine mounts, and most recently, a transmission failure at 166,000 miles. I strongly recommend looking into other options.

We have had some issues with our Odyssey, particularly with the sliding doors and battery. Despite multiple repairs at $1400 each and replacement batteries, we still experience problems. To work around this, we keep one slider door locked and use the other, and make sure to drive the car every day to prevent the battery from dying. Unfortunately, we have had instances where the 'working' door will not close, especially on inclines, and the driver button will not activate it. One weekend, while turning onto a busy street, the 'broken' door slid open, even though it was locked, causing my 11-year-old to scream. This is actually my second Odyssey, as the first one (2004) slipped out of park while my young boys (8 & 6) were washing it, and nearly rolled down the driveway and into a major roadway. We have decided that Odysseys are not the right fit for us.

We have invested $4,000 in tires alone, having just put our 3rd set on the van with 90,000 miles. Despite the car rattling and having major quality issues, we remain confident in our decision to use the PAX tire system.

Although this 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan has had some issues, I can confidently say that it has been a reliable vehicle for me. While I have had to replace a few parts, such as the transmissions and axles, I have always been able to find affordable and effective solutions. The sliding door has required some maintenance, but it has been manageable. The ignition key did require a repair recently, but it was a quick and easy fix. While the fan for the a/c and heat could be improved, it still functions well enough to keep me comfortable. Overall, I believe that this minivan is a good investment for anyone in need of a reliable vehicle.

This is the 5th Honda I have purchased and unfortunately, what was promised has not been delivered. The car is consistently getting 20 mpg with predominantly highway driving, instead of the advertised 28 mpg average. I have reported this issue to the dealership and it seems that I am not alone with this complaint. However, the dealership is working on the problem and hopefully, it is just a correctable glitch with a couple of vehicles. It is also noticeable when the engine goes into the economy mode while driving. I hope that the gas mileage will improve soon.
