2003 Honda Odyssey problems
For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2003 Honda Odyssey problems
The 2003 Honda Odyssey has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the powertrain, airbags, and electrical issues.
- Powertrain Problems: The most common issue with the 2003 Honda Odyssey is related to the powertrain, with 533 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These complaints involve difficulty shifting, loss of power, and jerking, which often lead to transmission failure before the vehicle reaches 150,000 miles.
- Airbag Issues: Airbags are another major concern for Odyssey drivers, with 133 complaints on file. Some drivers have reported being on replacement part waiting lists for one of the twelve airbag recalls issued from 2013 to 2019, even as late as 2022.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical issues take third place with 81 complaints on file. These problems range from minor issues like faulty windows to more significant issues like the car failing to start when the key is turned. There was an ignition recall in 2012 to address potential rollaway, but the issues seem to be more extensive than initially realized.
While Honda vehicles are generally known for their reliability and few major mechanical issues, the 2003 Honda Odyssey does have some concerning problems under the hood. With 15 recalls on file and two airbag investigations still open, it's clear that this model year has some issues that owners should be aware of.
The Odyssey's life expectancy is typically between 200,000 and 300,000 miles, but the 2003 model seems to be an outlier, with several reports of transmissions going out around 150,000 miles.
In terms of technology, the 2003 Honda Odyssey has good entertainment technology for its time, with entry-level models starting out with a cassette player and four speakers, and higher-end models getting a DVD player in the backseat. Safety tech is also excellent, with features like four-wheel anti-lock brakes, occupant sensing airbags, traction control, and childproof door locks coming standard.
Despite its issues, the 2003 Honda Odyssey remains a popular choice for families due to its spacious interior, low maintenance costs, and smooth, strong powertrain. However, potential buyers should be aware of the common problems and consider the vehicle's history before making a purchase.
Is 2003 Honda Odyssey a good car?
Although the Odyssey's design dated from 1999, it was still a very good minivan and an excellent value. It showed improvements from our previous test, with quicker acceleration and a more comfortable ride. The 2003 Odyssey handles with agility and has a roomy interior. It's powertrain is smooth and strong.
How many miles can a 2003 Honda Odyssey last?
On average, a well-maintained Honda Odyssey can last for 200,000 miles or more.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
- VIN: 5FNRL18903B
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Van has open recalls on driver and passenger side airbags. Van also has a defective driver front seat belt tensioner that Honda claims has a lifetime warranty, but Hendrick Honda of Bradenton FL refuses to perform the recalls or replace the defective seatbelt tensioner. Even after advising them that they are required by law to perform any open recalls and are not allowed to charge anything for said recalls, Service Writer "Tammy" was uncooperative and kept alluding to things like she couldn't guarantee we would not be charged up to $1500 for these repairs which honestly should ALL be recalls as they are life safety issues. Due to their refusal to perform even the NHTSA recalls even after being given the documentation of the required recall, we have to find another dealership and hope they will perform the recalls.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-08
- VIN: 5FNRL180X3B
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: All recalls have been completed on this 2003 Honda Odyssey Van but every now and then the warning light for the supplemental restraint system comes on and will stay on for a long time. the next trip it will be fine. Just wondering if this is something to be concerned about. It is a car we keep at our beach house and only use on a limited basis but I need to know it is safe. I recently had vehicle scanned and had all old codes cleared. If the air bag situation is the cause of this I don't want to be driving it. East Coast Honda in Myrtle Beach, SC. (833-299-3248, 8756A US Highway 17 Bypass South, Myrtle Beach SC. 29588) has replaced the recalled airbags on 2 different recalls. Thank you for your assistance. [XXX]. SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
- VIN: 5FNRL185X3B
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: We have had issues with our drivers side seatbelt since we purchased the vehicle new. First it had retraction issues, then the plastic stop button that keeps the buckle from sliding down failed, disintegrated. We asked the dealer to replace the belt which they refused to do. We have brought it to the dealer before, even generating a case number from Honda, but Honda refused to repair the belt. Over the years it has gotten progressively worse, where the belt is seriously frayed, and there are retraction issues. In August 2022, I contacted our local dealer, Piazza Honda in Springfield, PA. It took almost a month for them to take the car, make some photographs, and then to leave out of the notes that we had an ongoing retraction issue. Two months later, Honda Corporate informed me that they are denying the claim for the defective seatbelt. The warranty as stated in the handbook states a lifetime warranty for seatbelts. All aspects of the car pass State of PA Inspection requirements, all other aspects of the SRS systems are fully functional, with the exception of the drivers seatbelt. We believe that Honda's determination of non-liability is a ruse, a cynical attempt to exploit their customers in a critical safety component. We deserve a replacement seatbelt, and Honda customers need to be reminded that Honda is legally required to stand by the mandated Lifetime Warranty for Seatbelts. We feel that our only recourse to request that your agency look into this issue, and remind Honda of their responsibility. Honda's unconscionable conduct should not be condoned, not tolerated. This is not the first time Honda has tried to harm it's customers. The Federal government forced Honda to extend the warranty for its automatic transmissions, and repair defective ones. Our vehicle suffered from the same transmission issue, but we fell just outside the extended warranty period. The cost of the part (Honda 04818-S0X-A02ZH) is quite high from Honda, in excess of $667.73 without labor.

THIS IS A DISCREDIT TO THE RECALL SYSTEM WHEN OBVIOUSLY FALSE AND ERRONEOUS MESSAGES ARE PERSISTENTLY SENT, IN ERROR. THIS CAUSES THE USER TO DISREGARD POTENTIALLY SERIOUS INFORMATION. HONDA MUST HAVE A METHOD OF ACCOUNTABILITY ADDED TO THEIR SYSTEM TO ALLLOW THE REMOVAL FROM THEIR RECALL DATABASE OF A VEHICLE WHICH HAS BEEN SOLD/TRANSFERRED/DESTROYED. If you're a driving enthusiast, you'll love the Honda Odyssey. It's a fun and smooth ride that gets great gas mileage. Plus, it has a tighter turning radius than the Toyota Sienna. The Odyssey handles like a top-of-the-line Honda or Acura car, which is no surprise considering Honda is known for producing some of the cleanest and most innovative vehicles in the world. Unlike some other car companies, Honda doesn't copy ideas from competitors. In fact, Toyota recently copied Honda's Element. Overall, Honda is a much more dependable brand that produces long-lasting vehicles that don't rust after just a few years. The Odyssey is also incredibly responsive - I was even able to beat a Toyota Celica off the line with ease!

We purchased this vehicle four years ago when it had 67k miles on it. Currently, it has 110k miles on it. Since it was a certified Honda, we had coverage until 100k miles, which replaced the motor mount for free. It is normal wear for a FWD car at 100k miles to have motor mounts going bad. The leather seats are extremely comfortable, but the road noise is worse than other vans. However, if you apply 'undercoat' to the wheel wells and buy good tires, it will be silent. Bad quality tires make it worse. I have flushed the transmission fluid at 75k miles and changed it at 100k miles, and so far, there have been no transmission problems. I love it because I get 26 mpg driving from Denver to Utah over 11,000 foot mountain passes with the cruise set, fully loaded.

I never thought I'd own a minivan, but Honda makes the minivan not only tolerable, but dare I say, fun. The 240 HP engine is impressive, yet the interior is quiet. The suspension is great and the 3rd row seat is not just for kids. There's plenty of room for 6 full-sized adults (7 if you don't mind being shoulder to shoulder). The leather seats are incredibly comfortable and the entertainment system is top-notch. The DVD system keeps the little ones occupied and content. When you consider Honda's reputation for quality and reliability, along with the fact that you can negotiate the price, it's clear that the '03 Honda minivan is the undisputed champion of its category.

Look everything over before buying. It's been great to me. I love it!

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with your Odyssey. It's great to hear that you've owned it since new and that it has been a great family vehicle for you. You mentioned that it has better usable space than a Tahoe or Expedition, which is fantastic! Additionally, you've had very few problems and extremely low maintenance costs for the first 128k miles, which is impressive. Although the transmission was rebuilt at 128k for $3400, it's wonderful to hear that you're planning on keeping the Odyssey for another 125k miles. Thank you again for sharing your positive experience!

I have noticed that my Honda has had multiple transmission replacements, issues with the doors closing, and rattling when the seats are stored. After speaking with other Honda owners, it appears that they have also experienced similar service problems. It would be beneficial for Honda to address these issues and consider a recall for affected vehicles.

Honda was supposed to fix the transmission problems, but unfortunately, this van has continued to experience issues. Despite Honda's struggles with this particular model, we have decided to trade it in for a new Dodge Mini Van. The transmission repair cost us $6,000, but we are confident that our new vehicle will be a better fit for our needs.

This vehicle has been a disappointment to me. I have had to replace or repair several parts, including the transmission (twice), rotors, window mechanism, radio, door sliding motor, compressor, and power seat switch (twice). Unfortunately, it has left me stranded multiple times due to transmission issues. One of those times was during a vacation in Florida, which was a frustrating experience. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend Honda vehicles. I have also noticed that many new Pilot's and CRV's have been brought in for service. Currently, I am waiting for my vehicle to be serviced again.

I purchased a 2003 Honda Odyssey in Fall 2002 and have been maintaining it well. Unfortunately, after reaching 100,000 miles, I started experiencing some issues with the transmission. Despite having to replace it twice within a month, with a cost of around $1500, Honda was kind enough to cover the rest. A year later, I had to replace the Shift Solenoids A and B Gaskets due to a leak, but thankfully it was still under warranty. However, I recently discovered that my transmission is leaking again, along with other major issues, and I have been advised that the cost of repair is not worth it. Although I am disappointed that my car could not make it to 200,000 miles, I understand that every car has its limits. I have decided not to buy a Honda again, but I appreciate the good times I had with my Odyssey.

I am confident in stating that the transmission of this vehicle has started slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear, and then 1st and 2nd gear, despite being purchased only 9 months ago with an extended warranty of 12K miles at 80K miles. Unfortunately, the extended warranty has expired, and the Honda dealer has stated that they cannot offer any assistance. It is unacceptable that the cost of rebuilding the transmission is $4000, and a brand new one costs $6300, especially considering that the car was purchased for $10,000.
