2011 Honda Odyssey problems
For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2011 Honda Odyssey problems
The 2011 Honda Odyssey is a popular minivan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Some of these issues are related to specific components, while others are more general in nature.
One of the most frequently reported problems with the 2011 Honda Odyssey is related to the automatic sliding doors, which are available in upper trims. A damaged or broken cable can cause the doors not to work, and the actuators can also fail. This issue can be expensive to repair, with costs ranging from $280 to $360.
Another common problem with the 2011 Honda Odyssey is related to the engine. Some owners have reported engine misfiring issues, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including bad spark plugs or faulty ignition coils. In some cases, replacing the spark plugs and ignition coils may solve the problem, but in other cases, more extensive repairs may be necessary.
The 2011 Honda Odyssey also has a timing belt that needs to be replaced around every 100,000 miles. This can be a major repair, as it involves removing the engine's front cover and replacing the timing belt, water pump, and other related components. The cost of this repair can vary depending on the labor rates in your area, but it can easily run into the hundreds of dollars.
The 2011 Honda Odyssey's transmission has also been known to cause problems for some owners. Some owners have reported a judder or shudder when accelerating, which can be caused by poor ATF fluid maintenance or a software update. This issue can be addressed by flushing the transmission and replacing the fluid, which can cost around $100 to $200 in labor and parts.
Another common problem with the 2011 Honda Odyssey is related to the brakes. Some owners have reported brake pulsation caused by warped rotors, which can be caused by excessive heat or wear. This issue can be addressed by replacing the rotors and brake pads, which can cost around $200 to $400 in labor and parts.
The 2011 Honda Odyssey's exhaust system has also been known to cause problems for some owners. Some owners have reported leaks in the muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, or heat shields. These leaks can be caused by corrosion, damage, or wear, and they can be expensive to repair, with costs ranging from several hundred to several thousand dollars.
Finally, some owners of the 2011 Honda Odyssey have reported issues with the in-car electronics. Some have reported that the battery charge low indicator comes on despite the battery being OK, which can be caused by a software update for the battery sensor. This repair is relatively inexpensive, but it may not solve the problem if there are other issues with the battery or electrical system.
In summary, the 2011 Honda Odyssey is a reliable vehicle overall, but it does have its share of common problems. Some of these issues are related to specific components, such as the sliding doors, engine, transmission, brakes, exhaust system, and in-car electronics. While some of these issues can be expensive to repair, many of them can be addressed with routine maintenance and timely repairs.

- Summary: Check engine light would pop on for a small amount of time periodically since I purchased it, took it to shop where they stated everything was fine..as check engine light was no longer on. Just started smelling burning when drove for long periods of time. Yesterday, on the way home with my 8 year old daughter, in freezing upstate NY temps, the gears totally went out. Thankfully I was right next to house and able to put in park and back into drive to get it to click into first gear to get us to house. Gears went out in mid drive, going 60 mph.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-16
- VIN: 5FNRL5H67BB
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was at a stoplight on 11/16/23; when it was my turn to go (green light) I went to accelerate, and my engine seemed to sputter/choke or misfire before accelerating at a slower than normal rate and then the engine light came on -flashing- and then the traction control/VSA system indicator light came on my dashboard. I was able to make it home, but when we googled the symptoms: Rough idling Lack of power Engine vibrating or shaking Decreased fuel efficiency Illuminated check engine light Illuminated traction control/VSA system / VSA indicator light we saw that we could have a traffic safety issue and did not need to drive it as normal- take it to repair as soon as possible. I contacted our local EXPRESS OIL Mechanic to see if he could read the engine codes, advise us, and possibly fix our car. He reassured me that he had been working on extensive Honda issues for over 10 years, and it sounded like a pretty simple spark plug fix. When he ran the engine check he called to tell my husband and I that it was a fix related to a recent recall put out on HONDA Odyssey 2018-2019. He advised us to contact our local dealer and let them know it was the same issue as the recall. The dealership first said that the recall did not cover our vehicle, then that they didn't have the parts to fix it. I was then connected with a service advisor who said they could check the codes and should be able to fix it. My concern is that it should possibly be a recall and that it should otherwise be reported. Further, that if it becomes a recall, we've already paid to get it fixed and won't get reimbursed for it.

Now our van has lots of damage from that when it could have been an easy fox with a release .. it was a very tense 40 mins of getting it off.. it was very tight around his waist and constricting his abdomen

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-18
- VIN: 5FNRL5H68BB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The Honda Odyssey engine turns off while driving. My wife was driving with four children in the car and the engine died causing loss of power steering and brakes. This places all family members at serious risk of injury or death. Took the vehicle to three different service garages and none were able to reproduce the incident or determine a reason. One service garage was a certified HONDA Dealer and Service Center. They also were unable to determine the cause after having the vehicle for a significant period of time. They wanted to start replacing parts at a very high cost but indicated that there was no assurance it would fix the problems. Took the vehicle to another service garage where they said the parts the dealer wanted to replace were working fine and it would not solve the problem. Drove the car home and the engine failed again while I was driving on a highway. I also lost all power to the steering and brakes. The vehicle is available for inspection. I will not let my wife or children ride in the vehicle. It is not safe. There were no warnings prior to the failure. All service garages indicate there are no codes that are generated when they run the computer scans.

- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Honda Odyssey vehicles. The second row outboard seats can slide sideways to one of two positions. If a seat is placed between either of the two positions when attaching the seat to the vehicle floor, the seat will not latch properly to the seat striker, allowing the seat to tip forward unexpectedly during braking.
- Consequence: If the seat tips forward during braking, it can increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a bracket to the second row outboard floor strikers, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2018. Owners may contact American Honda Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is S0G.
