2018 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2018 Honda Odyssey problems

The 2018 Honda Odyssey is a popular minivan known for its spacious interior, safety features, and comfortable ride. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2018 Honda Odyssey based on search results:

  • Transmission problems: Transmission issues are a common complaint among Honda Odyssey owners, including the 2018 model. Some owners have reported experiencing a loud "klunk" noise when changing direction of travel, which can be concerning. Additionally, the transmission fluid for this 9-gear car is quite expensive, which can add to the cost of repairs.
  • Electrical issues: Electrical problems are another common issue reported by 2018 Honda Odyssey owners. These can include the clock consistently displaying the wrong time, the car not self-locking as it should, sliding door failure, battery not lasting more than a year, random electronically controlled braking, poor connection between gas pedal and fuel injection, and the AC turning off while idling. Some owners have also reported ongoing electrical problems that Honda has not been able to fix despite requests for repairs.
  • In-car electronics: The 2018 Honda Odyssey's in-car electronics, such as the infotainment system, have also been reported as problematic by some owners. The entertainment system has been known to shut down consistently, and the car's entertainment system has been criticized for being difficult to use.
  • Body hardware: Some 2018 Honda Odyssey owners have reported issues with the car's body hardware, such as the door handles and back-up camera. These issues have been reported as being resolved under warranty, but they can still be a source of frustration for owners.
  • Fuel system/emissions: Some 2018 Honda Odyssey owners have reported issues with the car's fuel system/emissions, such as the fuel pump. These issues have also been reported as being resolved under warranty.

It's important to note that these issues are not necessarily indicative of all 2018 Honda Odyssey vehicles, and many owners have reported having positive experiences with the car. However, these are some of the most common issues reported by owners, and potential buyers should be aware of them before making a purchase decision.

What issues does the 2018 Honda Odyssey have?

Common problems on the 2018 Honda Odyssey include lurching while changing gears with the ten-speed transmission, power door lock issues, as well as a frozen stereo system. Overall, these problems are similar to other minivans, while repair costs are typically lower than average.

What is the common problem of Honda Odyssey?

Transmission Issues

The most important issue on this list is related to the transmission. Unfortunately, Honda Odyssey transmission problems have been reported by drivers over the years.

Is there a recall on Honda Odyssey 2018 transmission?

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Odyssey vehicles. Loose battery terminal connections or a degraded battery may cause the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) to unexpectedly reboot. Upon rebooting, the TCU may shift the transmission to the "Park" position, possibly damaging the parking rod.

How long should a 2018 Honda Odyssey last?

On average, a well-maintained Honda Odyssey can last for 200,000 miles or more, but individual experiences may vary. Gerald Jones Honda is a reputable automotive dealership located in Augusta, Georgia.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: For over a year, my 2018 Honda Odyssey has intermittently hesitated when accelerating, particularly when pulling into intersections or merging into traffic. This hesitation creates a significant safety risk, as the vehicle momentarily fails to respond to acceleration, increasing the potential for collisions in situations where immediate response is necessary. The issue is consistent with symptoms outlined in Honda’s recall (NHTSA Recall Number: 23V-858) involving a malfunctioning fuel pump impeller. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer, who confirmed the issue but indicated that they lack the necessary parts to complete the repair. Despite repeated inquiries, the part remains unavailable, leaving the vehicle unsafe to operate and creating an ongoing safety concern. No warning lights or dashboard messages appear prior to or during the hesitation. The dealer has acknowledged the problem, but without parts, the recall remedy remains incomplete.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: When audio system is turned on, a very loud crackling sound occurs, and will continue after audio is turned off. Sirius XM works most of the time (with crackling sound). However, when the regular radio is turned on the audio will work for just a minute (with crackling sound), and then it will suddenly stop working and a message pops up on the display that says "audio connection lost". This also happens when a phone's Bluetooth audio is connected to the car. It triggers the audio system to suddenly fail. There has been other electrical issue with the rear lift-gate suddenly closing, with no way to stop it. It almost pinned my daughter and I on separate occasions. I'm not sure if this electrical issue is related to the audio issue, but as with any electrical issue I worry about the possibility of an electrical fire.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H76JB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When pressing the accelerator from a stopped position, sometimes there is a need to let off the accelerator and then press it again. There are times when I do this sequence of events and the car doesn’t accelerate but almost seems to stall. Pressing the accelerator does not increase the speed. To remedy, I have been waiting a few seconds before repressing the accelerator to give the van time to shift or whatever it needs to do not to “stall”. This evening particularly, I was turning right on red so I accelerated and then I noticed that the cars on the street I was turning into had started to go so I let off the accelerator. Unfortunately I noticed that I was too far into the intersection and had no choice but to keep accelerating but my van stalled and wouldn’t accelerate when I pressed on the gas for a few seconds. It eventually “caught up” and accelerated but I ended up spinning my tires and “peeled out”.

VISIBILITY/WIPER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H87JB
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER,BACK OVER PREVENTION

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-17
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H54JB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Started my car and got all these warning lights ACC problem, Collision Mitigation Problem, Lake Keep Assist Problem, Auto High Beam Problem. From reading forums online this is a common issue for Honda Odysseys 2018-2023. The camera is faulty. This should have a recall.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-12
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H86JB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving on the interstate at 80 mph when my engine suddenly failed. The check engine light began to flash, the car began shaking, and there was a very loud thumping from the motor. Thankfully, I was able to pull off the road to safety. Honda diagnosed the problem this morning. They said a connecting rod bearing rotted out, so the engine threw a rod. There is a recall addressing this exact issue for my model year, but my VIN was not included in the recall. Doing a quick google search, I found several other owners of 2018 odysseys in the same boat - sudden engine failure due to a thrown rod, but their VIN wasn't included in the recall. I drive my car a lot, so it has 140,000 miles on it already. This makes me think that I'm likely to be in the early wave of vehicles experiencing sudden engine failure due to an issue with the conn rod bearing. Someone else may not get so lucky and be able to pull off the interstate when their engine blows. The repair is going to cost me approximately $8,000. Once I have the invoice and other documentation available, I'll share it here. I didn't want to delay sharing this information until after the repair is done, though, because if Honda doesn't expand their recall to include more 2018 Odysseys, someone else isn't going to get as lucky as me, and injury or death are a real likelihood. (Plus, having your engine suddenly fail is just a bummer regardless.)

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-10
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H74JB
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: After weathering hurricane Milton, the rear liftgate on my 2018 Honda Odyssey will not open. No apparent damage was done to the vehicle, however after starting the van, the dash stated there is a power liftgate issue. This warning was not present before. After doing some research the issue appears to be the tailgate control module, as many other people have found this to be the case. Some people have said to open the tailgate from the inside using the manual latch. However, in my case after attempting to do so, the door remains stuck. A lot of people have pointed to water intrusion as the reason for a faulty Tailgate Control Module. If I am able to open the liftgate manually I intend to replace the faulty module.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H84JB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: When I turned on the ignition to drive the vehicle, multiple warning lights came on to include failure of Lane Keeping Assistance, Forward Collision Avoidance, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Automatic Emergency Braking. Additionally, after acknowledging these lights, the "Brake System" light remained on in the Amber color. If these safety features are not working properly, it can put the occupants of my vehicle as well as others at risk. We took the vehicle to the Honda Dealer. They ran the diagnostics and stated that the fault was "Internal Electronic Failure of Multipurpose Camera Unit/Internal Failure of Multipurpose Camera". We had to replace the Multipurpose Camera and have the new one re-calibrated.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When trying to accelerate from a stop either in an intersection or from a driveway the vehicle takes a long moment before it responds... leaving my family vulnerable to cars coming from the opposite direction. I think it's the transmission but it could have to do with the fuel intake... it has been ongoing for months and months. The dealer has attempted to rectify but to not avail....very dangerous

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
  • VIN: 5FNRL6H78JB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: UNKNOWN At random times I will push the gas pedal and the car does not engage at all to move. I will lift my foot up and down trying to engage the engine and it won’t. After a few times it will catch and the car takes off making the tires squeal, spin or jerk. It happens at random times, no warnings whatsoever that there’s a problem. It is very dangerous at intersections when turning left on green lights, when pulling out of parking lots. It’s to the point I am afraid to drive it at busy traffic times because it happens so often and I’m afraid of getting hit while my car will not move. We have told the dealership and they suggested we wait for the fuel pump recall to be readily available. I looked in forums and this seems to be a major problem for many other owners of the 2018 or newer. It started approximately two years ago and continues to happen, in fact happening more often.

  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2018 Honda Odyssey van have had persistent acceleration hesitations after completed stops, especially during making left or right turns at street intersections since July 2022. This car normally hesitates for 2 to 3 seconds after accelation pedad is pressed before suddently jumps forward. Acceleration hesitation for few seconds, during making a turn, is very dangerous due to in coming cars in my opinion; as a result, we have tried to avoid using my odyssey van as much as possible due to potential accidents when making a turn with this Honda van.

Negative 2018 Honda Odyssey car reviews

After owning a 2005 Honda Odyssey for 12 years with over 200K miles on it, I decided to upgrade to the 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite, top of the line. However, I have encountered some issues with the GPS system and radio. Despite bringing these issues to the attention of the dealership and American Honda Care, they have been unable to duplicate the problems. I have provided specific addresses and even video evidence, but they are still insisting on duplicating the problem in person. I remain confident in my assessment of the issues and hope for a resolution soon. The Apple CarPlay in my new Honda Odyssey is not functioning properly. Despite Honda suggesting that the issue may be due to my use of an aftermarket USB cord from Verizon, I informed them that I had the same problem even when using the original Apple USB cord that came with my phone. The CarPlay frequently displays a message indicating that it is not connected, even when it is. I often have to repeatedly plug and unplug the USB cord to get it to work. Additionally, the voice text and text-to-speech functions are often unavailable. The van is also louder than expected for a new vehicle, which is disappointing given the price I paid. I have already had to reset the PBS for my daughter a few times. Although the van is still under warranty, Honda has informed me that they are waiting for more reports of these issues before taking any action. However, I believe that my report and videos should be sufficient evidence to warrant repairs. Other issues include the hands-free rear door process not working consistently, the right side blind spot indicator failing to activate at times, and the radio/GPS panel shutting off while I was driving. The air conditioning also does not work as well as it did in my 2005 Odyssey, requiring me to set it to the lowest temperature and highest fan speed just to feel cool on hot days.If you are experiencing similar issues, please do not hesitate to inform Honda. Despite their claim of no reported complaints, I have come across a few on this platform with varying concerns.

I was very close to purchasing the 2018 Honda Odyssey, but I ultimately opted for the Sienna instead. While I generally like the latest tech, such as Apple Play which the Odyssey has but the Sienna does not, I found that I actually prefer the knob transmission handle (and round A/C knob) on the Sienna instead of the transmission buttons on the 2018 Odyssey. One of our best friends bought the 2018 Odyssey EX-L and loves it, although they did have some issues with the GPS not working properly to get to the right destination. I was disappointed to find that the 2018 Odyssey's A/C vents for the 2nd/3rd row seats are on the side of the vehicle, which can be uncomfortable on hot weather days, unlike the Sienna which has ceiling vents. Nevertheless, I still would have considered purchasing the 2018 Odyssey, but the one thing that killed the purchase for me were the uncomfortable seats. I was willing to upgrade and spend more to get the Elite model because it had perforated seats in the 1st/2nd rows which offer a bit more cushion, but they were still nowhere near as comfortable as the Sienna's seating. During a ride in my best friend's 2018 Odyssey EX-L, I sat in the 2nd row and found the seating to be so uncomfortable (too hard) that I actually disliked the whole ride experience. It also seemed to be a bit noisier than the Sienna ride. In all fairness, the Elite does have ventilated seats as standard in the front seats, which the Sienna does not have.

I was one of the first in America to take delivery on my 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite. Unfortunately, the dealership had not yet been trained on the new technology system, so I still have no idea how to work most of the functions on the computer. I requested a private education session for my wife and me, but it has been over a month and a half, and I have not heard back from Honda. Two weeks ago, my 12-year-old son accidentally broke the front grab handle, and we have noticed some rattles and noises that our previous Honda Odysseys never had. A week ago, the rear passenger door window stopped working, and we brought it to our local dealership. They informed us that Honda USA is aware of the problem with the rear windows on these new 2018 Odysseys, and parts are on backorder. Unfortunately, they have no idea when the parts will be available. Although this new Odyssey has less than 2,000 miles on it, we are disappointed with the issues we have experienced. We hope that Honda can resolve these problems soon, as we would love to continue enjoying our new van.

I have owned this minivan for 5 months now and unfortunately, I have not been satisfied with its reliability. Although I understand that this car is made in the USA and some minor issues may occur, I did not expect them to happen so soon. In comparison, I have owned a 1999 Honda Accord for 18 years and have only had to replace one light bulb and turning bulb (regular maintenance not included). However, with this 2018 Honda Odyssey, I have experienced a few issues so far: 1. The passenger power sliding door did not open yesterday, despite the motor trying to open it. I tried everything from pulling the outside handle, using the remote control, inside button and driver side main control button, but nothing worked. 2. The auto shut off idling function does not work most of the time, as the engine does not auto shut off when I activate it. 3. The motion sensor from the tail door is also not working most of the time, despite following a video on YouTube. I have only been able to open it twice so far. (Lol) 4. The driver power sliding door also sounds weird now, but I am hoping it won't break. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that they can be resolved soon.

I recently had a 2015 Sienna which was coming to the end of its lease. After owning two Siennas and with the shape staying the same, my family and I thought it was time to move onto something else. We decided to lease a Honda Odyssey EXL 2018 for 499 a month with 0 down. Although it has some great safety features, we did notice that the ride is a bit rougher than the Toyota. Additionally, we noticed that the exterior seems to be cheaply made, with the front and rear bumper not aligned correctly. We had to go back to the dealer to have it aligned, and we saw other Odysseys with the same issue. Unfortunately, my rear window started making a clicking noise, and they stated that there was a loose connection on a new car with only 100 miles. The interior lacks a compass, the seat doesn't go high enough, and the interior material seems cheap. The location on the side is also a bit inconvenient, and there is no place to stow the middle seat. The sliding doors also tend to jam, and the third row only has cup holders with no compartment. There are no speakers, no sunshade, and the window is fixed, so you can't open it for ventilation. Overall, I was disappointed with the Honda Odyssey, and it will be my first and last Honda. If my family hadn't insisted, I would have never leased it. Let's see what happens later.

Positive 2018 Honda Odyssey car reviews

I recently purchased an 18' model with the EX-L package, Tech, and Nav. My wife primarily uses it as a daily driver, but we take it on long family trips as well. I am 6'1'' and 200 lbs, and I find this van to be much roomier than the older models. The legroom has increased by about 4'', and there is much more head and shoulder room. The armrests are also wider, and the seat can be pushed back farther. The touch screen technology is much better than the older van, with an HD color display and tons of options. The fuel efficiency is much better, and we got over 29 MPG on a recent 6-hour trip with a full load of 5 people. The ride is much quieter, and the engine has more acceleration when needed. The fog lights are standard on this model, and the middle seats can tilt back for long trips. The blind spot monitor and other safety features like shin airbags are nice add-ons. Overall, the van looks better, definitely seems like they lengthened it maybe another 6'', and it's roomier for sure. The electric start is nice, and the shifters are now buttons which take some getting used to but work pretty well. The kids like the extra plugs, USB, etc. The rear tailgate goes up higher if needed which I like as I used to hit my head on the old one. As far as Cons, the 9-speed transmission can be a bit shifty at low speeds, but this just takes some getting used to. Also, all the safety features like lane monitoring, cruise control, etc. are unique and take some reading up on.Basically, the van is equipped with a lane departure warning system that gently vibrates and corrects the vehicle's position if it moves out of the lane. However, on tight roads, this feature can be a bit bothersome. Additionally, the cruise control system automatically slows down the vehicle when it approaches another car, which can also be a bit inconvenient if you prefer to change lanes without adjusting speed. Despite these minor nuances, I am overall very happy with my purchase. The van is quiet, comfortable, spacious, fuel-efficient, and boasts Honda's renowned safety and reliability. Although we had to pay the sticker price, we were able to get a good trade-in deal and the color combination we wanted.

I recently purchased a 2018 Honda Odyssey Touring and I am absolutely thrilled with it! After experiencing numerous issues with my 2011 Toyota Sienna, I test drove both the Chrysler Pacifica and Odyssey. The Odyssey was the clear winner for me. The Pacifica's styling was not to my taste, and the interior materials and infotainment system felt cheaply made. The Odyssey, on the other hand, drives like a dream. It's quick, responsive, and handles like a car or sporty SUV. The seats are incredibly comfortable, even in the second and third rows, and the sliding second row seats are a great feature. The infotainment system is quick and lag-free, and the LaneKeep Assist feature adds an extra level of safety. Overall, I have zero complaints about my Odyssey and would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a new minivan. If something comes up, I'll definitely update my comment. If you're looking for a family car that's fun to drive and packed with impressive features, the Odyssey is definitely worth a test drive!

I recently traded in my 2002 Odyssey EX with 209,700 miles for the 2018 EX, White Diamond Pearl with Mocha interior. I absolutely loved my old one, but I had an urge for new technology and comfort. So far, I am absolutely in love with my new one!! I didn't even bother looking at any other Minivan because I knew I wanted another Odyssey. I also really like the styling of this one. In just 2 weeks and 230 miles of ownership, I've already received 3 compliments from people saying how nice my van looks!! The seats are super comfy and supportive, everything on the interior seems high quality and not cheap at all. Practicality is this van's strong point, with cup holders and storage compartments everywhere!! I hate clutter, so I can neatly store and organize all my junk in the door compartments and under the seats. I'm most impressed with how this van drives, the steering is a little stiff with good road feel, minimal oversteer, along with a buttery smooth transmission gear changes and superbly quiet cabin even at high speed! I'm a huge fan of the gauge cluster...it looks modern and cool, but easy to see while not distracting my eyes from the road. My only complaint so far is cosmetic and completely subjective; the wheels. They aren't cheaply made, just not a fan of the design. However, I am planning to upgrade to 19 inch rims. I absolutely love my new Odyssey and I am looking forward to driving it on lots of road trips in the future!!

We had a bit of a bumpy start with a few recalls and infotainment issues, but the dealer was quick to replace them. The car is really spacious and comfortable.

  5. Jamaal Hayes 2025-01-09

We recently purchased the 2018 Honda Odyssey to replace our 2006 Toyota Sienna. While we were excited about the technological advancements, we did miss the CD player. However, we are determined to find a way to adapt. Although some of the touch-screen controls can be a bit tricky to navigate, especially when wearing gloves, overall the van is great. We did have a bit of trouble with the defrost/defogger during an 8-hour drive from Chicago to Cleveland, but we managed to figure it out eventually. The only other issue we had was with the back seats, which have bumps and ridges that make it difficult to lay something flat. Despite this, we are still happy with our purchase and look forward to using it for camping trips (although we may need a mattress to sleep on).
