2002 Honda Odyssey problems
For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2002 Honda Odyssey problems
The Honda Odyssey 2002 has been reported to have several common problems, particularly in the transmission category. This issue has been reported by 221 owners, making it a significant concern for 2002 Odyssey owners.
Another common problem is leaking or low fluid, which is often identifiable by a buzzing, humming, or whining noise coming from the transmission. This issue can lead to more severe problems if not addressed promptly, as low fluid levels can cause the transmission to overheat and potentially fail.
Grinding or shaking during transmission is also a common problem in the 2002 Honda Odyssey. This issue can be caused by a clutch that needs adjusting or replacement, but it is essential to have it checked and serviced to ensure that the problem is not more severe.
Lastly, a burning smell coming from the Honda Odyssey can indicate overheating transmission fluid, which can lead to increased corrosive activity and friction in the transmission, potentially causing it to break down completely. This issue is a significant concern and should be addressed promptly to avoid costly repairs.
In summary, the 2002 Honda Odyssey has been reported to have several common problems, particularly in the transmission category. Transmission failure, leaking or low fluid, grinding or shaking, and burning smell are all significant issues that can lead to costly repairs if not addressed promptly. It is essential to have the vehicle checked and serviced by a professional mechanic to ensure that any potential problems are identified and addressed before they become more severe.

Smoothest driving tank I've seen
Very roomy and the fold-down back seat is excellent. After nearly 20 years of ownership, it still drives wonderfully and only needed a handful of repairs (power windows tend to fail and we replaced the alternator about 17 years in). The biggest issues are have are the sliding doors.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-02
- VIN: 2hkrl18682h
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The transmission How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? When I was on the highway the car lost power and I was almost rear-ended by a car when I was stopped on the freeway on my way to the doctor. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No, I am a recent buyer and do not have much information about previous problems with this vehicle. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, when it broke down, I just called the tow truck and they transported it to a mechanic and the mechanic put the machine in to find out what the fault was, and he told me and showed me that the fault was in the transmission and the cost would be $1800 to $2000 dollars or so to fix it. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, before the breakdown the car turned on a light that I didn't recognize but I kept going because I was on the freeway and a few meters ahead the accelerator didn't respond, so I had to pull off the road to call the tow truck. Personal, I don't have any documents to prove this because logically I don't have $2000 dollars to fix the transmission. When I was with the mechanic and he checked the car he just showed me and said what it meant. the light that came on the dashboard. Also, yesterday I received this paper and it said that if the car shows up with more faults to come in with the code that comes on the document. I found it strange to receive it because according to me when I bought the car, everything was in good condition and now the transmission is not working, apart from the air bag. For these reasons I would like to know how I can take the car to them, if it does not walk and to get it to them, I have to take the tow truck.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-04
- VIN: 5FNRL18982B
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 06/04/2021 2002 Honda Odyssey - Aftermarket Fuel Pump Lock Ring - Multiple Failures Safety Issue = Gasoline leaking out of the tank onto the ground. Starting in 2019, three aftermarket fuel pump lock rings have failed on one 2002 Honda Odyssey. The lock rings were all made of plastic. The OEM Honda lock ring was also made of plastic and after 17 years did not fail, but was replaced when a new fuel pump was installed. A DELPHI model FG0956 fuel pump had two lock ring failures. The third lock ring failure was on a AIRTEX model E8642M fuel pump. The torque spec per Honda for the fuel pump lock ring is a hefty 69 FT LBS or 93 NM. An SK click type torque wrench model 73100 was used on the installs, as was a fuel tank lock ring tool LISLE model 63000. All the lock rings were at first hand tightened to prevent cross threading before using the torque wrench. The SK torque wrench used has never been known to over torque bolts. The third lock ring for AIRTEX was torqued to about 60 FT LBS due to the prior failures. No warning lights or messages appeared when the lock ring fails. All failed within one year of install. Failure detected by noticing the smell of gasoline, especially outside the vehicle and sometimes inside the vehicle. Each of the failed lock rings split, and then gasoline starts leaking out of the top of the tank at the fuel pump and onto the ground. The fuel pump will start to rise above the tank due to it being spring loaded and the lock ring failing. The problem is most noticeable after filling the fuel tank, and when the vehicle is exposed to high outside air temperatures. If you look under the vehicle, a puddle of gasoline on the ground is sometimes visible just below the fuel pump. If the failure is not yet severe enough, you will not see a puddle but may still smell gasoline. A local auto parts store recommended purchasing an OEM Honda lock ring due to the aftermarket failures and the hefty Honda torque spec of 69 FT LBS on a plastic ring.

I'm so glad I bought my 02 Ody EX with 79K miles. After driving it for 10K miles, I'm still very happy with my decision. I did have to replace the EGR for $100, but it was a minor issue. I'm getting about 21 MPG, which is pretty decent. The van is really roomy and the folding 3rd row seat is the best feature!

You've had this van for 17 years, since it was new. It's been as steady as a rock, with low maintenance and few repairs. You couldn't have asked for better in terms of value, interior space, and comfort.

Like most, you may not want to take the plunge into Minivan life. However, you will be happy you did. It is such a pleasure to drive and you can go anywhere and buy anything without worrying if it will fit. Your daughter will love it because she can see out the window.

Happy one year anniversary to our Odyssey! It has truly exceeded our expectations in every way. With two young boys, we needed a car that was roomy and versatile, and the Odyssey delivered. We've had no issues with the mechanics and the fit and finish is still impeccable. When we're on the road with our family, comfort and security are top priorities, and the Odyssey provides both. It's truly the best family car out there!

The van is generally good. Although, I did have some paint defects on my new van. I was disappointed with the attitude of the dealer and Honda Customer Service. However, I believe there is room for improvement in their customer satisfaction survey. I pointed out a couple of things, but unfortunately, they have never followed up. The van is now the best it can be, but if their customer service does not improve, I'm not sure if I would consider returning for my next car.

We purchased this van in early 2007 with between 70 and 80,000 miles. It was in great condition and drove and handled well. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago while driving on the highway, the transmission started acting up. We took it in to get checked out and found out that we needed to rebuild the transmission, which cost us an additional $3,000. While this was disappointing, especially considering the year, mileage, and price we paid for it, we still appreciate our Honda. Our only other complaint is with the sliding doors, which are slow and cannot be stopped midway. If the electric is off for some reason or the doors are stuck, they can be very difficult to operate.

Overall, this has been a great vehicle. I use it to pull a small cargo trailer, but unfortunately, I've been experiencing some transmission problems. Despite having all the required Honda services and getting the transmission fluid changed each fall at Honda House.

We purchased our van used in 2004 with only 12,000 miles on it. We absolutely loved the van for five years and were able to pay it off during that time. We had planned to keep it for a good long while, but unfortunately, the transmission unexpectedly failed at only 85,500 miles. We had always serviced our vehicle at the dealer and towed it there for assistance. However, they informed us that a new transmission would cost almost $4,000 and proceeded to tell us about the transmission issues that Honda has been experiencing with their vehicles. We were extremely disappointed with this news and ultimately decided to trade the car in for a Hyundai with a 10-year powertrain warranty. Like many of the other customer reviews I've read, we too have lost our faith in Honda's quality.

Hey there! I wanted to let you know that there is actually a recall for the transmission on your Honda. It seems like they may have forgotten to mention it to you. Let me know if you need any help getting that taken care of!

The transmission on my Odyssey has been slipping for the past 18 months and the dealer is asking for $4K-$5K to fix it. However, an independent transmission shop and a Honda salesperson have both told me that this is a common issue with Odysseys. Despite a few minor electrical issues, I really like the van. The only downside is that the front end is a bit too low and the plastic tends to break in Minnesota snow. UPDATE - We ended up getting a new transmission for $3,200 two months after my original review. Unfortunately, fifteen months later we experienced catastrophic engine problems and had to retire the car. Since then, a friend of mine bought a used 2006 Odyssey and the transmission died just four months later. We decided to switch to a 2015 Sienna and we absolutely love it!
