2001 Honda Odyssey problems

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

2001 Honda Odyssey recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2001 Honda Odyssey.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2001-2002 Acura 3.2CL, 2000-2003 Acura 3.5RL, 2000-2001 Acura 3.2TL, Honda CR-V and Honda Odyssey, 2001-2002 Acura MDX and 2000 Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Coupe, and Civic Sedan vehicles. These vehicles may have received a replacement driver frontal air bag module as part of a vehicle repair. Due to a manufacturing issue, the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air bags in the vehicles, replacing the driver frontal air bag inflator with an inflator of a different design, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138.

The van was definitely worth the two-month wait, despite the limited color options due to short supply at the time. It offers ample space for both passengers and cargo, with exceptional leg room. Although the front seatbelts lock up easily, and the sliding doors tend to freeze shut in winter, the van provides a smooth and quiet ride, making it ideal for long journeys.

I love my Honda! Recently, I accidentally hit a deer and was surprised that I barely felt a thing. I didn't even need to get out of the car to check the damage. When I finally did, I was shocked to see how little damage there was. It's like my Honda is indestructible, just like a Timex watch that keeps on ticking.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read about our experience with our 2001 Honda Odyssey Van. We purchased it used with approximately 130,000 miles on it when we realized we had outgrown our previous vehicle. Since then, we have only done routine maintenance and it has been a reliable vehicle for us. Of course, with three kids growing up with soccer, baseball, basketball, ranching, vacations, etc., we have had to open and close the doors a lot, which caused some problems with the sliding doors. The plastic rollers wore out and one door even fell off when I opened it due to the roller breaking, but that was around the 225,000 mile mark. Thankfully, we were able to order the replacement parts and my husband changed them out, and now it works fine. It has over 263,000 miles on it now and we are beginning to shop for another vehicle. However, I must say that the defroster is my one really big dislike. It takes FOREVER for the windshield to clear, which I believe is due to bad engineering. Thank you again for reading!

Since you drove it off the dealer, there have been no problems. The power sliding doors work fine, the engine is silky smooth just like a Lexus or better. The interior is very roomy, even roomier than its rival, the Town and Country. On your Starlight Silver Honda Odyssey EX, you have installed customized PIAA fog lights and wind deflectors to make the van distinct from others.

Our Honda van has been a reliable vehicle for us since we purchased it in the fall of 2000. Although we had to replace the transmission under warranty at 96K, we are now facing another replacement at 193K without warranty. The cost of replacement ranges from $3300 to $6900, which is not feasible for our family. Unfortunately, we have to consider junking it as replacing it with a new one is not possible. After experiencing the luxuries of this van, any other van just doesn't meet my standards. However, I am disappointed that Honda replaced the broken transmission with a refurbished one instead of a new one. Despite this, I am still grateful for the reliability that this van has provided us. It is worth noting that my 1995 Chev truck runs well and has outlasted my expectations for a non-Honda vehicle.

Transmissions are a crucial component in all vehicles, particularly vans and minivans. Many people are not aware of this and may unintentionally cause damage by pushing their vehicle to its limits. To extend the lifespan of your transmission, it is important to treat it with care. One helpful tip is to find the optimal shifting points and ease off the gas pedal just before changing gears (for example, at 20km/h, 40km/h, or 80km/h).
Fletcher Abshire 2025-08-28
The 1999-2001 model years of this van have had some issues, but the 2002 and later years are a better choice. The interior features spartan design with hard seats that may not be comfortable for long rides. The side doors may stick in the winter. However, Honda has a reputation for quality and reliability, and the Odyssey is no exception. With proper maintenance, this van can provide reliable transportation for years to come.

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey Van. I have taken great care of it by following all of the dealership recommendations and opting for all Honda advised work/repairs and scheduled maintenance since I purchased the van. Unfortunately, the transmission failed at 100k miles! According to the service rep, several Honda vans have had a similar issue with the transmission. Although I was disappointed that Honda did not offer any assistance in this replacement, I understand that these things can happen. As a loyal Honda customer, I hope that they will continue to provide quality vehicles in the future.
Narciso Bartoletti 2025-06-10
You can get 13mpg in the city with this car. However, the transmission went out at 90k. Overall, it's a good car, but the gas mileage is a bit of a pain.
Gavin Altenwerth 2025-05-22
Our experience with this van has been less than satisfactory. Despite being a new purchase, we have had to replace the transmission three times in its 120K lifespan. While Honda has replaced the faulty transmission, it seems that the new one is just as problematic and only lasts until the end of the 109K warranty. It is frustrating to keep paying for these recurring issues, and we hope that Honda will find a permanent solution soon. In addition to transmission problems, we have also faced issues with the doors, CAT, EGR, and other components. We appreciate the assistance provided by the dealerships, but it is concerning that a solution has not been found yet.
