2013 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2013 Honda Odyssey problems

The 2013 Honda Odyssey, a well-regarded minivan, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues range from minor inconveniences to more serious mechanical faults that can affect the vehicle's safety and performance.

One of the most frequently reported problems is related to the transmission. Some owners have experienced vibrations and jerking motions, particularly during acceleration and at higher speeds. These issues can be especially problematic when the vehicle is fully loaded, making long trips and driving uphill more challenging. Despite taking their vehicles to dealerships for repairs, some owners have reported that the problems persist, with dealers unable to duplicate the issues or find error codes to guide the repair process.

Another common problem is related to the braking system. Some owners have reported premature pad and rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, and even brake failure in some cases. These issues can be caused by various factors, including antilock system problems, parking brake issues, master cylinder concerns, caliper malfunctions, and squeaking noises. These problems can compromise the safety of the vehicle, making it essential for owners to address them promptly.

Steering and suspension issues have also been reported by some 2013 Honda Odyssey owners. These problems can include shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment concerns, steering linkage issues, power steering problems, wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, and electronic or air suspension faults. These issues can affect the vehicle's handling and stability, potentially leading to safety concerns, particularly during high-speed driving or when carrying heavy loads.

In addition to these mechanical issues, some owners have reported problems with the sliding doors, which are a key feature of the minivan. These problems can include damaged or broken cables, actuator failures, and issues with the automatic sliding door mechanism, particularly in upper trim levels.

While the 2013 Honda Odyssey is generally considered a reliable vehicle, these common problems can affect its performance, safety, and overall owner satisfaction. It is essential for owners to stay vigilant and address any issues promptly to ensure the vehicle remains safe and reliable over time.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-02
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H65DB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine backfired and failed at 125000 going 60 mph on major highway. Mechanic found the problem to be with the pistons, rings, oil and the vehicle's continues system to reduce miles per gallon of gas system. He replaced rings and pistons. The problems were identical to the service bulletin 1301 put out by Honda in 2015 yet this vin was not included. From Bulletin 1301 "Warranty Extension: MIL Comes On With DTCs P0301 Through P0304 (Supersedes 13-081, dated December 20, 2013, to revise the information marked by the black bars) REVISION SUMMARY Under DIAGNOSIS, VIN information was added to indicate which vehicles need software updates. BACKGROUND American Honda is announcing a powertrain warranty extension as a result of a settlement of a class action captioned, [XXX] v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Case No. [XXX] (N.D. Cal.). The piston rings on certain cylinders may rotate and align which can lead to spark plug fouling. This can set DTCs P0301 through P0304 and cause the MIL to come on. American Honda is extending the powertrain warranty to cover repairs related to engine misfire (that triggers DTCs P0301 through P0304) to 8 years with unlimited mileage from the original date of purchase and has settled a class action based on this remedial measure. This warranty extension does not apply to any vehicle that has ever been declared a total loss or sold for salvage by a financial institution or insurer, or has a branded or similar title under any state’s law. CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION Owners of affected vehicles were sent a class action settlement notice regarding this warranty extension starting in October 2013.Before doing work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by doing an iN VIN status inquiry. Refer customers seeking information about settlement benefits to www.enginemisfiresettlement.com, or instruct them to call 888-888-3082. CORRECTIVE ACTION Inspect the vehicle and, if necessary, clean the pistons, and replace the piston rings ... INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-30
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H68DB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle stalled continuously after a slight noise and speed dropped to 20-30 mph while driving on a freeway in Arizona at around 9 pm in the night. We had to pull to the side of the road and once I parked and turned off the engine, the vehicle would not turn on again. All lights -check engine, were on. Once it was towed to the independent service center, it was diagnosed as engine failure with two pistons burnt out and had to get that replaced. After researching , I see a recall for certain 2013 honda odyssey for engine pistons issue , (Link - [XXX] .) where it may not have been properly hardened during a heat treatment process. This engine issue caused a great safety risk in the middle of freeway, thankfully the traffic was light since it was late-night. We were 6 members in the car including kids and we were stranded by the side of the road until 11 pm until tow truck or other ride arrangements could be made. We spent approx $5000 for repairs , $1000 for towing and $500 for rentals. I can provide the receipts on request. STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H65DB
  • Components: STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: Honda Odessey 2013Driving down a highway at 55mph when we heard a loud backfire. Engine light came on, car shook violently. We immediately pulled into a gas station where a mechanic was present. Mechanic scanned for codes and codes p0302 and P0303 came up. The cylinders had rotated and aligned fouling the spark plugs. and damaging the coil. Had we continued to drive we would have ruined the engine. He changed the coil and spark plugs but noted that the oil consumption was extremely high since last change due to the VCM issue. The Honda Service Bulletin 13-081 revealed the VCM system poses risk of ruining the engine. When I returned home, I inquired what could be done to fix it. The local dealership said purchase a new engine and spark plugs. The warranty fix for this ended in 2021 and I did not buy the car until 2022. The same faulty system has been on the Odessey since 2011 and continues to be installed as of this date 2024. This issue along with the peeling paint coming off in large sheets from the roof and rear door make this car a complete failure and safety hazard.

  • Summary: Driving down the road at 45mph when suddenly in heavy traffic my 2013 Honda Odyssey's check engine light begins flashing and the vehicle begins to shudder. I was unable to accelerate to the speed limit and had to pull the vehicle over. Had to have the vehicle towed to the Honda dealership where they confirmed the check engine light illuminated due to codes p0301, p0302, p0303, and p0304. I was told that the spark plugs are being fouled with oil. I experienced this same issue in March of 2022 and had to have half of the engine rebuilt by honda. I was told that would correct problem but a little over a year later the same issue is occurring and I've now been quoted $12000 to replace the short block. At no point did any warning lights or messages illuminate to portray any issue with the vehicle. This car should be deemed a lemon as this issue is occurring at only 150,000 miles.

As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
  • Consequence: If the gear selector is moved from the park position without pressing the brake pedal it can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer. The dealer will install an updated brake shift interlock blocking mechanism free of charge. The recall began on May 13, 2013. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's campaign recall numbers are S96, S97, and S98.

Negative 2013 Honda Odyssey car reviews

Congratulations on your 3rd Honda/Acura purchase in the last 6 years! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your new Odyssey. As you mentioned, the Odyssey is a top contender in its class, offering the most space, best EPA mileage, and excellent resale value. Additionally, it comes equipped with a wide range of safety and entertainment features. While some of these features may be frustrating or difficult to use, overall, the Odyssey is a fantastic choice for families. The Elite model, with its 6-speed transmission, is especially convenient for getting around town and keeping the kids happy.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 2012 EX. I was able to lease it for the same price as my 2009 LX, which was a great deal. I have to say, the luxurious feel of the car is amazing, and I own other luxury cars to compare it to. One thing I really appreciate is that many neat features come standard with the car. In terms of size, I feel like it's slightly wider than the 2009, but I'm not sure about the length. That's just based on my personal feeling though. On the downside, it can be a bit harder to see the corners, which makes tight turns and parallel parking more difficult. Additionally, I lost the lower latch storage in the 2nd row. There are also quite a lot of buttons to play with, and it's not very intuitive. I'm a bit of a techie, so I was able to figure it out, but it might be a bit overwhelming for some. Finally, compared to the 2009, it loses some of its sporty cornering, and the ride can be a tad numb. Overall, I'm really happy with my decision to upgrade to the 2012 EX. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Odyssey. My wife and I initially thought it would be the perfect fit for our growing family, but we've had a few concerns. Firstly, after driving 4K miles, we noticed that the windows would roll down automatically when the car was parked - even in busy areas like downtown DC. We took it to the dealership twice before they diagnosed a defective key fob and replaced both keys. Secondly, at 18K miles, we started experiencing some hesitation when driving on the highway between 45-55 miles per hour. We took it to the dealership and they told us that the transmission needed to be replaced. Although we now have a new transmission, we've noticed a similar hesitation after driving 25K miles. We're considering trading the van before the warranty is up. Thanks for listening!

I had a contrasting experience with my 2009 Odyssey and my 2012. While the former was great, the latter has had a series of problems. Unfortunately, the dealer (Norm Reeves Irvine) has not been helpful and has tried to overcharge me on multiple occasions. Despite spending $650 on a power steering pump replacement, the noise complaint still persists. The sliding door has also had an intermittent grinding sound, which the dealer only recognized after the warranty had expired. The car even broke down once, leaving us stranded with a malfunctioning main computer. The brakes have also been a constant source of maintenance. As a result, I have decided not to purchase any Honda vehicles in the future.

Although I do not own this car, I am frequently asked to drive it as a favor. I must say, the car drives and handles well, and the backup camera works great. However, I do have a minor complaint about the leather seats. While they are comfortable enough for short trips, after approximately 100 miles, they may cause numbness and sharp pains in your butt and legs. My passengers also experienced discomfort during a trip from NYC to the Poconos. In comparison, the cloth seats in my previous 2000 Odyssey were more comfortable for long trips and got better gas mileage with the same size engine.

I owned the car for five years and had no problems. I liked it so much that I traded it in for a new EX-L.

I completely agree, the minivan is a fantastic invention! Although I never thought I'd own one, I have to say that the practicality and convenience it offers is unbeatable. I've had the chance to drive both a Sienna and an Odyssey, and in my opinion, Honda really stands out in this market. The Odyssey is just so good! The only minor issue I've had is that some sunscreen residue on the side door armrest stains quite easily. But overall, the slow acceleration, long braking distance, and plastic interior pieces are all to be expected in a vehicle like this. I'm definitely keeping an Odyssey in my garage for all my road trips and people hauling needs!

My 2005 Sienna XLE needed replacement and I absolutely loved it. However, I was disappointed to see how the interiors of the newer models have cheapened over the years. The new Sienna was particularly disappointing, and the Odyssey was just passable. The door switches are already scratched due to the cheap plastic used. Although I considered the Quest, I couldn't get over its unappealing appearance and suboptimal transmission (CVT). While I have a Maxi CVT, the load was too much for it. The driver console is also quite cheap. Despite these issues, the rest of the car is great. I do wish they had included a 110 in the second row instead of the third, and the finishing could have been better. I had to adjust a few panels and pull some plastic and carpet fibers, but overall, I am satisfied with my purchase.

Wonderful Van! It looks great inside and out. It drives and handles like my Accord, and the mileage is very good. Plus, we can fit our kids back there with ease. It's very roomy and comfortable. Nice job, Honda!
