2010 Honda Odyssey problems
For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

Common 2010 Honda Odyssey problems
The 2010 Honda Odyssey has several common problems that owners have reported, which include excessive oil consumption, paint peeling, issues with the electric sliding doors, vibration when braking, and fuel pump cover cracking.
Excessive Oil Consumption: A common complaint among 2010 Honda Odyssey owners is excessive oil consumption, which typically starts to appear at around 90,000 miles. Honda acknowledged the issue and released a free dealership installable software update for the variable cylinder management system that fixes the problem
Paint Peeling: Another problem that develops on many 2010 Honda Odyssey vans is paint peeling, which typically occurs at about 100,000 miles. Poorly maintained paint will start to flake and peel, and repainting the impacted areas at a cost of about one thousand dollars per panel is the only option
Electric Sliding Doors: There have been some issues reported with the electric sliding doors on the 2010 Honda Odyssey. Some owners have reported that the driver's side sliding door won't open, and mechanics have identified the issue as an electrical problem. The dealer's estimate for the repair cost is between $800 and $900
Vibration When Braking: Many Honda Odyssey owners have reported that the brake pedal vibrates under their feet as they apply the brakes. The front brake rotors are the source of the brake pulsation, and they may eventually warp due to the heat generated by the brakes. When the brake rotor starts to warp, the uneven heating causes the warping process to accelerate, causing the problem to quickly progress from light pedal pulsing to complete vehicle vibration
Fuel Pump Cover Cracking: There are two recalls covering the fuel pump cover, which can crack and leak fuel, increasing the risk of a fire. Honda has released updated brake rotors that will address the issue, and the brake pads will also need to be replaced
In addition to these common problems, the 2010 Honda Odyssey also has some design issues that may affect its reliability and performance. The transmission in the 2010 Odyssey has been known to have problems, and some owners have reported issues with the starter and the doors. The engine in the 2010 Odyssey has selective cylinder de-activation, which means there are times when it's only running on three cylinders, and this can cause roughness when the system kicks in.
Overall, the 2010 Honda Odyssey has both its pros and cons. While it handles well, offers excellent power, and has a spacious interior, it also has some common problems that owners have reported. These issues include excessive oil consumption, paint peeling, problems with the electric sliding doors, vibration when braking, and fuel pump cover cracking. Additionally, the transmission, starter, and doors may also pose reliability issues. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- VIN: 5FNRL3H74AB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The incidents of sudden acceleration while braking on this model are vast. My van has experienced several sudden un-commanded acceleration incidents while braking starting in 2022. Honda lawyers are in control and thus no technical explanation. My last event was on [XXX] post hurricane Helene in Asheville N.C. The response of the NHTSA is needed due to people of modest means need to keep their car as long as possible. This requires honest service information from Honda. Honda has reaped a well deserved dividend cultivating the belief that their product with careful use can last 20 years or more. Honda does not deserve to reap this benefit while failing to execute an honest service which creates an unsafe vehicle. In 2023 the Throttle Position Sensor and its complete assembly was replaced in hope of a resolution. I will now replace the Engine Control CPU after the [XXX] incident. These repairs and expense are un-diagnosed non-OBD supported “shots in the dark” because Honda will not recognize the failure. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-25
- VIN: 5FNRL3H94AB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Honda service bulletin [XXX] I recently discovered after doing some research on why my 2010 Odyssey is showing cylinder1 misfire code. I replaced the injectors, swapped coil packs, etc. Still cylinder1 misfire issue. Now I find out that Honda is aware of this issue and related to VCM and some rings on piston(s) aligning. Fortunately for Honda, the 8 years unlimited miles is most likely out of a window where statistically the issue will be seen. That is my case. Sept 25, 2021 is when this first started, and has continued to be an issue. I never received notice from Honda since this is a used van. Anyway, I would like some assistance in rectifying this issue for our family van. My local Honda dealer is not even remotely interested in repairing the issue based on [XXX] because of the 8 year extended warranty is no longer applicable. I need help from Honda NA. If you know there is an issue with ring alignment, extending this for 8 years doesn't seem like you are capturing the majority of the problems; most likely a calculated risk... My Odyssey didn't show the issue until 11 years after the 2010 manufacturing date... fortunate for Honda. I need help from Honda on this, even to meet me 1/2 way to cover repair costs. This seems unacceptable to me that an issue as serious as this, known by Honda, and won't be addressed. Please help. Thank you, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-05
- VIN: 5FNRL3H4XAB
- Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Passenger side sliding door jammed halfway open and would not close or open. Had to have the car towed to the mechanic and have all components of sliding door replaced (twice!). Driver's side strut spring broke under normal use - with 62000 miles on the vehicle. Now rear backup camera/GPS/radio unit has ceased working at all. Passenger side door also randomly begins to close part way through opening, nearly injuring my child's friend who was exiting the vehicle.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-10
- VIN: 5FNRL3H42AB
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Yesterday(7/9/23) when trying to open and close our back sliding door on the drivers side it was making a louder grinding sound and was difficult to open/shut. No warning lights. Today when pushing the button to open the door it started to open and then fell off the frame on the top and mid rail. Only connected by the bottom rail. It appears that the mid rail/ slider is the part that failed causing the door to come off its hinges. It also caused large deep scratches to the body of the car. This is a serious safety concern. The door is heavy and could have hurt someone. We are very lucky that my kids were still strapped safely in their car seats. We strapped the door to the car in an open position and have not gotten it inspected yet. Upon researching I have now seen hundreds of reports of this same thing happening to others.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-19
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5FNRL3H62AB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My car self-combusted and caught fire while parked in my driveway. The fire started in the hood of the car and continued for 30 minutes or so despite my best efforts to put out with my hose. The fire department had to come to put out the fire. The car was parked for 90 minutes from last usage and no one was in the car. The temperature outside was around 80 degrees. This is potentially a huge safety risk for Odyssey owners. The car had 124k miles on it and had done the full 120k maintenance service at Honda dealer (Honda of Kirkland). The car was serviced per regular maintenance schedule by the Honda dealer. Hard to believe a car will go up in flames on my driveway like that. See pictures. Fire department was from Eastside Fire Station 33. Captain Kurt McGowan. Fire witnessed by many of my neighbors who also tried to help me put out the fire before fire truck came.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-12
- VIN: 5FNRL3H24AB
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: On 6/12/2022, minutes after exiting 45 miles of highway driving, I parked the car. Less than 90 seconds after parking, the left front tire experienced an explosive loss of air pressure. An approx 2" x 1-1/2" piece of the sidewall near the tread was missing, and the reinforcing belt inside the tire was torn. It was the inside (engine side) sidewall. There was no apparent damage from any road hazard that could have contributed to the failure. Could not find the missing sidewall section. The General Altimax 235/65R16 103T tires were purchased new on 6/1/2022 with 200,583 miles on the vehicle. Failure occurred at 217,525 miles. The tire was replaced by the original seller (Belle Tire, New Hudson, MI), who now have the tire. They also inspected for previous damage and found none. Availability for inspection unknown. Belle Tire reps indicate that this is a very unusual failure and will be reporting to manufacturer. No other entities have inspected the failed tire. No warnings/symptoms present prior to the explosion. The DOT number on the failed tire is 6546 WBMH. It is notable that the other 3 identical tires on the vehicle have four additional digits (e.g. 6546 WMBH 0421) following the letter code, which Belle Tire said was the manufacture date of the tire. (0421 would be the 4th week of 2021). The failed tire lacked this information. Obviously, my wife and I were very lucky that this failure did not occur while driving on the highway as it almost certainly would have resulted in a loss of control at high speed.

This would result in corrosion and ultimately the safety of the vehicle. I am attaching the pictures of my vehicle. I did contact Honda and they advised me to get the vehicle inspected at their service center. I am scheduled to visit them for diagnosis soon, but wanted to share what I found as there recall with 2011-12 is something that clearly extends to other years model as well.

2010 Honda Odyssey recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2010 Honda Odyssey.
- Manufacturer: Delphi Automotive Systems, LLC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: Delphi Automotive Systems, LLC (Delphi) is recalling certain replacement fuel pump modules, part number FG1155-11B1, sold for use in 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey vehicles. The affected fuel pump may send an incorrect fuel reading to the fuel gauge possibly causing the vehicle to run out of fuel. The fuel gauge will always read 3/4 full to full regardless of the actual level.
- Consequence: A vehicle that runs out of fuel and stalls has an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Delphi has begun notifying dealers and distributors, and will replace the fuel pump modules, free of charge. Owners may contact Delphi customer service at 1-877-411-8770. Delphi's number for this recall is GL14-004.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured June 23, 2004, through September 4, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the fuel pump strainer cover may deteriorate allowing fuel to leak out.
- Consequence: A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Parts to permanently repair the affected vehicles are not currently available. Honda will notify owners with an interim letter during May 2014. A second notice was mailed to owners October 6, 2014 when the remedy became available. Any vehicles that are currently leaking from the fuel pump cover will get a replacement, original cover. All vehicles, including those receiving the interim repair, will get an improved cover when they are available. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. The recall numbers associated with this campaign are JD9 (inspection and/or preliminary part replacement) and JE0 (final parts replacement).

We recently decided to upgrade from our old Windstar, so we researched the few remaining mini-vans available. After careful consideration, it was clear that the Honda Odyssey was the best option. The Odyssey is smartly designed by Honda to take into account features that make life easy, such as lots of space, ample storage, and a very nice stereo system. We particularly appreciated the sunroof option and the fact that the windows in the doors roll down. The ride is smooth and responsive when you need it to be. While we would prefer a different type of car, for a family with multiple children (plus their friends), you can't beat the mini-van. We highly recommend it to any family looking for a reliable and spacious vehicle. We opted not to have the DVD system, but if your kids can't deal, it's a great option to have.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that we recently upgraded our car to a 2010 touring model and we're really happy with it! We preferred the low belt line and style of the 2010 over the 2011, and thanks to Honda Incentives, we were able to get a great deal. The 2010 touring model is also much quieter than our previous EXL, and we've noticed some other improvements like the exterior paint, matte finish on the silver dash trim (which hides fingerprints!), and more scratch-resistant interior plastic. We've also noticed a significant improvement in ride quality. Overall, we're really pleased with our decision to upgrade and we think the touring model is definitely worth the cost premium. Plus, since it's an end-of-production model, we're confident that it will be more reliable than a brand new 2011 model. Thanks for reading!

We recently traded our 2007 EX-L RES for a 2010 Touring and we absolutely love it! I have heard some reviews mentioning transmission problems with the Odyssey van, but fortunately, we have not experienced any issues with our 07 model. Some people have also complained about the MPG ratings, but it's important to remember that this is a 6 cylinder, not a 4 cylinder, so it's not going to be as fuel efficient as a Civic. When we drove our 07 to New York 2 years ago, I only had to fill up the tank twice for the entire trip, and we started from the Midwest. Overall, we find this van to be very reliable!
-
We bought this van back in October 2010, before our first child arrived. We traded in our 2002 Accord for it, as we needed something more practical, and it has been a fantastic choice for the past 6 and 3/4 years! It's comfortable, reliable (apart from the water pump at 52k), practical, and relatively fuel-efficient for its size. Now that we have three children, we plan to keep it until winter and then upgrade to a 2018 model. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the market for a used minivan.
-
Hey there! I just bought this vehicle yesterday, but I've had the chance to drive similar Odysseys owned by friends and family before. In my opinion, this vehicle is one of the best overall minivans in the market. While it may not be the best at everything, it definitely earns a solid second spot in most aspects and even takes the first place in a few. It's like a jack of all trades, master of none. What do you think?

We recently upgraded our vehicle from a 2000 Odyssey with 120k miles to a brand new 2010 EX-L. While the newer model has better performance, we did notice that there is less room in the back. Unfortunately, we can no longer stow items under the 3rd seat as it is now blocked off. Additionally, we have not been able to achieve the advertised 25 mpg hwy and have only been getting around 20 mpg after 6k miles. It would have been great if there was a factory option for hands-free Bluetooth, but other than that, we are happy with the quality of the vehicle and have not experienced any problems yet.
Oscar Mertz 2024-09-15
We purchased the Odyssey in September and have been enjoying its spaciousness and power for comfortable rides. However, we would not recommend the Touring edition as the extras do not work properly. The navigation system and rear camera are not effective on sunny days, as the screen turns black due to lack of protection from the sun and rain. While the voice recognition system can be fun, it can also be frustrating to repeat commands multiple times before the system understands. We recommend using the buttons instead, as they are much quicker.

I recently purchased the NEW Honda Odyssey 2010 and wanted to share my experience. While the ride is decent, I was disappointed with the fuel economy and overall build quality. Despite Honda's reputation for quality, this minivan falls short. I have been getting only 11 MPG, which is far below the advertised 20 MPG (17/24). If fuel economy is important to you, I would recommend researching other minivans before choosing the Odyssey.

I have experienced several quality defects with my new car, including clear coat spray on the windshield, a torn seat cover, a bumper coming off, and incomplete carpeting next to the driver's seat. Despite having to return to the dealer three times within the first week and spending nearly two days having these issues corrected, Honda of America has been unhelpful throughout the process. As a long-time Honda owner, I have always had great results, but this recent experience has left me uncertain about the future. It is disappointing to have encountered these issues with a car built in the Lincoln Alabama plant.

As someone who has previously owned an Audi Q7 and a 5 series BMW, I was surprised by the lack of basic technology in this vehicle. However, I understand that this is a van designed for family transport, so I am curious about how it performs in that regard. During a test drive, I found that the Chrysler Town and Country offers more features for a similar quality at a lower price point. That being said, I am currently driving this vehicle because my wife wants to keep up with the Joneses.
