2004 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-22
  • VIN: 5FNRL185X4B
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: GOOD EVENING, I AM FILING A COMPLAINT AGAINST AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO. LAST YEAR, THE MANUFACTURER FAILED TO REMEDY THE ONGOING AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION RECALL 04V-176. BRAMAN HONDA IN MIAMI, FLORIDA DID NOT INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION AS REQUIRED AND LIED ON THEIR WORK ORDER THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS BAD. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOOK 7 HOURS WITH MY VAN. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED. MY TRANSMISSION WAS IN WORKING CONDITION WHEN IT TAKEN TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT LAST YEAR. I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING THE ISSUES THAT THE RECALL WARNS THAT MAY HAPPEN DUE TO THE ONGOING GEAR ISSUES. LAST WEEK, WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY VAN'S TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP AND I ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME SAFELY. I RELY ON MY VAN FOR WORK THEREFORE THIS MATTER IS AFFECTING US FINANCIALLY. MY WIFE RECENTLY CALLED THE MANUFACTURER'S RECALL HOTLINE AND SPOKE WITH LISA. THE REP ADVISED THAT I WILL HAVE TO TOW MY VAN AND PAY OUT OF POCKET, FOR THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO EVALUATE THIS ISSUE. SINCE THE MANUFACTURER FAILED TO REMEDY THIS RECALL LAST YEAR, I AM REQUESTING THE FOLLOWING: I WOULD LIKE FOR AN ENGINEER OR MECHANIC TO BE DISPATCHED TO OUR HOME AND CHECK THE TRANSMISSION. ONCE THE MATTER IS ASSESSED, THEN I CAN PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR MY VEHICLE TO BE TOWED TO A NEARBY AUTHORIZED HONDA DEALER FOR SERVICE. LISA EXPLAINED TO MY WIFE THAT THERE IS A 50/50 CHANCE THAT THIS TRANSMISSIONRECALL ISSUE WILL ACTUALLY BE REPAIRED WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE. I CURRENTLY LIVE IN FLORIDA WHICH IS THE THIRD STATE WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNT OF COVID-19 CASES THEREFORE THIS WOULD BE THE MOST FEASIBLE OPTION. LAST YEAR'S CASE WITH THE MANUFACTURER WAS CLOSED PREMATURELY EVEN THOUGH MY WIFE ADVISED IT WAS STILL ONGOING. WITH THAT SAID, DUE TO BRAMAN HONDA'S NEGLIGENCE, I AM CURRENTLY WITHOUT A VEHICLE SINCE IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE IT IN THIS CONDITION. THANK YOU. *JS

Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Honda is recalling certain model year 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2005-2008 Acura RL, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2003-2008 Element, 2007-2008 Fit, 2003-2008 Pilot, 2002-2004 Odyssey, and 2006-2008 Ridgeline vehicles originally sold, or that have ever been registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Lastly, unless included in "Zone A" or "Zone B" above, Honda is recalling model year 2002-2004 Odyssey and model year 2003-2004 Acura MDX, Honda Element, and Honda Pilot vehicles originally sold, or registered, in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began June 27, 2016. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are KA0, KA1, KA2, and KA3.

  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2001-2007 Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2001-2004 Honda Civic GX, 2003-2005 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2002-2006 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, 2006 Ridgeline, 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2003-2006 Acura MDX, and 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. Note: Vehicles that have had their driver frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.

Due to electrical noise, a component in the air bag control module may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Honda dealers will replace the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit (SRS ECU). The recall began on February 22, 2016. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009. Honda's number for this recall is JN6 (Odyssey), and JN7 (MDX). Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-412. The interlock lever of the ignition switch may deform, which can allow the interlock function of a vehicle with an automatic transmission to be defeated.
  • Consequence: Removal of the ignition key when the gear selector of a vehicle with an automatic transmission has not been shifted to the park position can allow the vehicle to roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners and instruct them to take their vehicle to a Honda or Acura dealer. Negative 2004 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Columbus Ullrich 2024-10-18

This vehicle may not be the most family-friendly option, as it rides more like a truck than a car. However, it still has its merits and may be suitable for those who prioritize other features. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  2. Joey Macejkovic 2024-09-27

I purchased a Honda van and a Toyota car in the same year, both brand new. Unfortunately, I have never been satisfied with the van and it has caused me a lot of frustration. Despite having only 25K miles after more than 6 years, the rear vent has not been working for years and it makes a lot of noise. As a result, I rarely use it. While I do not recommend Honda based on my personal experience, I understand that others may have had different experiences. I simply prefer to avoid the constant frustration that I have experienced with my van.

  3. Dejuan Miller 2024-08-08

I replaced the transmission at 49,000 miles in Jan 2008, and when I called the dealership, there was no mention of a recall. However, at 83,000 miles, the transmission has failed again. Despite the fact that 1.1 million vehicles have been recalled for the same issue, my VIN # is not on the recall list. This experience has left me disappointed with Honda, and I am unlikely to purchase another Honda vehicle in the future. I believe that Honda USA could improve their customer service. Perhaps I will consider purchasing a Ford instead.

  4. Gregory Fisher 2024-07-24

I have owned several models of Honda in my life and have always associated the brand with quality. However, my experience with my Honda Minivan has been disappointing. The transmission failed at 60,000 miles, which was a scary experience. Despite spending a lot of money on repairs, the issues persisted. While I appreciate the convenience of the automatic doors, I am now considering other brands such as Lexus or Infiniti for their reliability. I hope Honda can address these transmission issues and regain my trust in the future.

  5. Percival Roberts 2024-07-17

I have been a loyal Honda customer for 15 years, but unfortunately, my experience with this Odyssey has not been great. In the past 5 years and 44k miles, I have had to fix several issues such as the radio controls on the steering wheel, rollers on both power sliding doors, all 5 engine mounts, A/C compressor, and seat belts. Additionally, the original Michelins wore out in just 20k miles. I am considering switching to a Toyota.

2004 was a great year for Honda! This baby could have easily run forever, until someone used it to stop their Ram 250 truck. Ugh, I hate that guy. Can anybody help me find a 2004 Odyssey to love?

  2. Henderson Hessel 2024-09-07

I'm so glad to hear that you had a great experience with your Odyssey touring van! It sounds like it was the perfect vehicle for your 8500-mile trip, with great gas mileage and reliable performance. It's understandable that the issue with the sliding door was frustrating, especially when it failed to open during your trip to Kentucky. I hope that the issue has been resolved since then. Overall, it's great to hear that you felt safe and secure on the highway, even when passing trucks or in bad weather. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Jamar Harber 2024-08-08

This car is a horse. No problems to speak of. Battery might need replacing by winter. Rides smooth and quiet and has plenty of power. Tons of room and everything is laid out properly. Excellent ergonomics from front to back. It's a shame that the LX RES package is no longer offered.

  4. Reinhold Mitchell 2024-08-04

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share our experience with our new Odyssey. We purchased it on Sep. 20th and just got back from a trip to California and Oregon. We put over 5,000 miles on it and it performed like a dream! We've been a loyal Honda family for years and have never had any problems with our 2000 Honda Accord, which has 48,000 miles on it. Before that, we had a 1989 Honda Accord LXi for 10 years. We're excited about the future and expect great things from our Odyssey!

  5. Cristobal Heidenreich 2024-07-20

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I bought this car 6 years ago and it's been pretty reliable. The only issue I've had is that the audio controls on the steering wheel stopped working. But overall, it's a really nice minivan with a bunch of great options.
