2015 Honda Odyssey problems

honda logo

For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.

The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.

Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-21
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H62FB
  • Components: EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
  • Summary: 12/21/23: Wheelchair ramp and kneel function failed with no warning. This engaged safety feature that disables gear shift and keeps car in park. Unable to move car or deploy ramp using back-up override. Called Mobility Works (authorized VMI dealer). Troubleshooting failed to deploy ramp or kneel function. Told only option was to pop off tab next to gear shift and insert screwdriver to override “park” lock. Fortunately, quadriplegic spouse was not in the vehicle or he would have been trapped. 12/26/23 to 1/3/24: Vehicle inspected at Mobility Works, technician diagnosed controller board failure and recommended replacement. Told VMI lost supplier for controller board leaving no way to properly restore conversion equipment. On 1/3/24 spoke to VMI technician who confirmed controller board is unavailable. He stated VMI engineering department is trying to develop a workaround for a new controller board. VMI technician also reported two calls a day for this problem, and that it affects their Chrysler conversion equipment as well. 2/7/24: Telephoned VMI technical support. Told workaround for controller board will not be available for months. Told that if quadriplegic becomes trapped in car to call fire department. Told this is an acceptable solution in the mobility industry if back-up fails. Very cavalier, comparing to Ford no longer making fuel pump or fuel hose for his old truck. 4/18/24; 4/25/24: Emailed VMI requesting status of controller board replacement. No response. Conclusion: The controller board failed without warning, causing all conversion equipment to fail, including back-up override, and potentially trapping power wheelchair dependent individuals in their vehicles. VMI has failed to provide parts for repair of its conversion equipment. VMI authorized dealer estimates $1,000 to bypass controller board. This will cause certain accessibility functions to no longer work. The vehicle has been unusable for quadriplegic spouse since December 2023.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-22
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H62FB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I am deeply concerned about the sudden breakdown of my vehicle due to the spool valve leaking onto the alternator and caused the loss of power and stalling of the vehicle while driving out of town and on an Interstate. This was an extremely scary time for me and my family being stranded on an expressway for over an hour and trying to figure out how to get my kids and family to safety. I have heard of others having the same issue with the same make and model vehicle and their repairs was covered by Honda. I don't understand why my issue would be any different and why my repairs are not currently covered by the Honda service bulletin. I would extremely hope honda take a deeper look at including my Vin in the service bulletin. I now understand this to be a well known issue as published in Honda Technical Service Bulletin TSB [XXX] However, no information was sent to owners even though Honda has known about the issue since at least March 2020. This puts unnecessary safety risks for those driving with oil leaking onto the alternator resulting in electrical system shutdowns and issues driving. I believe a recall and safety notice should be issued. Yes, the component was inspected by Honda and replaced. The first indicator was the ABS system warning light along with many other systems shutting down. This occurred at a high-rate of speed on the freeway. I am frustrated Honda has known abut this issue for many years, but has not informed owners nor offered to correct the issue leading to safety issues and costly repairs. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) Look forward to hearing better news from Honda and my repair coverage along with Honda standing by its product reliability.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-02
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H91FB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: A spool valve leak occurred leaking oil onto the alternator which caused it to fail when driving. When it failed, electrical systems started to shut down. At first, the ABS system indicator lit up. Multiple systems started to fail soon thereafter. Upon pulling over on the freeway, the vehicle was unable to go in reverse. The root cause was a spool valve leak that is well known and consequently puts drivers at risk when driving at high speeds. When driving down the interstate, all the electrical systems started to shut down. The ABS system was the first indicator, along with multiple electrical systems soon thereafter. Once pulled over, the vehicle could not go in reverse as well. Upon pulling over, the vehicle also could not go in reverse. I am frustrated Honda has known abut this issue for many years, but has not informed owners nor offered to correct the issue leading to safety issues and costly repairs. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-13
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H62FB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Honda's variable cylinder management (VCM) system puts inordinate wear on engine cylinders that causes the vehicle to shake and misfire and eventually shut down the engine. It causes spark plug and cylinder coil failures and cylinder damage. This is not due to age, misuse or lack of proper maintenance. The VCM causes engine build up as a normal course of action. This is a known issue that Honda has never communicated to owners of these vehicles. Model years 2011-2013 had the same issue. Honda has offered no recourse, or even communication, to owners of 2014-2017 Odysseys with the exact same VCM (VCM2) mechanism and the same wear and tear on the engine. You can read more about the issues these vehicles have and how common this is here: [XXX] Honda dealerships will replace your cylinder rings (at a HIGH cost) but this does not fix or prevent the issue from recurring. Our vehicle had this work done at 77K miles, but it does not stop the VCM from causing build up and malfunctioning again in the future. Families like ours buy these vans because they are supposed to have reliable engines, and be safe for their families. They sold 450K model year 2014-2017 Honda Odysseys and this effects EVERY one of them on the road today. This is a consumer issue AND a safety issue. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-29
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H60FB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: At 87,000 miles the piston valves failed in my 2015 Odyssey. Safety was put at risk as the spark plugs would fail due to oil leaking from the piston valves and the engine would flash all the lights and run super hard. Unable to drive it for 1 mile after the spark plugs failed. After the 2nd spark plug failure, a dealership confirmed the issue was the piston valves. 2 Honda dealerships confirmed that this is a known issue with Odysseys, Pilots and Accords and they have multiple vehicles in weekly to address this issue. Honda has had recalls on prior year Odysseys 2008-2013 for the piston valves but does not do anything to recognize this issue remains with the 2014-2017 vehicles. In 2018 the engine/build of the Odysseys changed and the piston valves are not an issue for that year and up.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-14
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H63FB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I own a 2015 Honda Odyssey EX-L purchased new at the Pacific Honda dealership in San Diego, CA. I wrote to American Honda Motor Co. requesting a partial reimbursement for the cost of significant engine repair work required on my Odyssey over the Christmas holiday, even though the car was well-maintained and had only been driven for 88,700 miles. Specifically, on or about December 14, 2022, my wife was driving our Odyssey with our two young children when the car began shaking and became difficult to drive, the check engine light began blinking, and numerous other warning lights flashed on the dashboard. My wife stopped the car and we reviewed the owner’s manual and learned that the blinking check engine light and other warnings could indicate a critical malfunction, and that the car should not be driven and should be taken to a dealership. We immediately contacted our local Honda dealership, Pacific Honda, and had the car towed, at a cost of approximately $100, to this dealership. The dealership (where the engine repair work was done) said my car needed an “engine rebuild” because the piston rings needed to be replaced and charged me $6,000 for the repairs, despite the car’s relatively low mileage. During the engine repair process, which spanned weeks and ruined my family’s Christmas holiday, multiple employees at the dealership repeatedly admitted that this engine problem was a “common” and “known issue,” and my brief research showed that this same engine problem has been the subject of a class action and recall in the past. In addition, online forums indicate that numerous Odysseys from 2014 through 2016 or later continue to have piston ring, fouled spark plug, and related problems potentially tied to the Variable Cylinder Management system.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-18
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H67FB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Began to accelerate onto I-70 west (on-ramp) and the engine began shaking and lost compression to accelerate quickly to merge into the right lane. The engine icon light was blinking and I had to remain on the far right side of I-70 because I could not get up to speed (70MPH). It did not break down but had to drive at speeds below the minimum speed limit. I took the vehicle to the dealership where I purchased it and was told oil had breached and caused the spark plug oil fouled. It required a RING/PISTON job, all new spark plugs, timing belts, O-rings, manifold gaskets, water pump, drive belts, and coolant. Honda responded and would not provide financial assistance. Total cost $5072.67

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-12
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H65FB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: This is copy of email I sent to Honda I am the original owner of a 2015 Honda Odyssey. I recently had the engine light come on and the diagnosis was "oil is coming through the piston rings into firing chamber and causing oil burning symptoms. Recommend replacing piston rings1-3". I had the work done at the Honda of Coeur d Alene, ID dealership for a total of $4040.66. This is a major repair for a van with low miles on it and Honda service technicians agreed. Researching online I discovered this is a problem with other Honda models and there have been recalls to fix the issue. I believe Honda should step up and cover the cost of this repair. This is my second Odyssey and the quality- lots of repairs to this van- has been very poor. I will be shopping for a car in the near future and at this point Honda will not be on my list. There are many online forums reporting this issue and past models have been recalled.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-11
  • VIN: 5FNRL5H67FB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Several times in recent years my car will start sputtering and misfire, losing significant power. Last time I was getting onto the freeway and it was quite dangerous as I was unable to accelerate sufficiently. My engine light also went on. The Honda dealership diagnosed the problem as a problem with the pistons, which needed replacing at a cost of some $4,000. The dealership shared that they were aware of this problem and that Honda had a newly designed piston to replace it. This seems to be the same problem covered by a RECALL for Honda Odyssey's 2011-2013 - but it does not cover my 2015 model. I am attaching info on the recall (Soto et al v. Amer. Honda Motor Co, Case No. 3:12-cv-1377-SI)

If a seat is placed between either of the two positions when attaching the seat to the vehicle floor, the seat will not latch properly to the seat striker, allowing the seat to tip forward unexpectedly during braking.
  • Consequence: If the seat tips forward during braking, it can increase the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a bracket to the second row outboard floor strikers, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2018. Owners may contact American Honda Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is S0G.

  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)

  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 Odyssey vehicles manufactured August 17, 2010, to October 1, 2015. The affected vehicles have second row outboard seats that have a release lever that allows the seats to move for easier access to the third row of seats. This release lever may remain in the unlocked position allowing the seats to move unexpectedly.
  • Consequence: An unlocked second row outboard seat increases the risk of injury to the seat occupant during a crash.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional bracket and spring to both second row outboard seats, free of charge. Interim letter has been mailed, and a second notification will be sent . Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is KD5.

Negative 2015 Honda Odyssey car reviews

  1. Anthony Davis 2025-01-05

Everything else seems to be great with the car, but I have noticed some wind noise above 45mph or even in low speeds if there is a lot of wind outside. It's a shame to experience this kind of issue with a Honda. Is there anything that can be done to address this problem?

  2. Jesus Fisher 2024-10-28

    - The heads were replaced at 100k. The auto doors broke at 1.5k and the seat broke at 90k. However, I am confident that my next car will not be a Honda.

I understand that there may be some negative opinions about Honda products, but I would like to offer a different perspective. While every car has its own set of strengths and weaknesses, I believe that Honda has a lot to offer. It is true that some components may not be as durable as others, but overall, Honda cars are known for their reliability and longevity. I would encourage anyone considering a Honda to do their own research and make an informed decision based on their own needs and preferences.

I owned a 2015 Honda Odyssey and unfortunately, it was the worst car I have ever owned. While driving, there were so many noises coming from the sliding doors, the front of the car, and the rear that it felt like I was driving a 1990 minivan. Despite taking it to the dealership over 12 times, they were unable to find the problems. I contacted Honda of America and their response was to get an appointment at a different dealership. It was disappointing to have paid close to 34k and in less than a year, I owned a car that was not up to Honda's usual standards. I won't be recommending Honda to anyone, not even to my worst enemy. I finally sold it and have decided to explore other options. Thank you for taking the time to read my experience.

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2015 Honda Odyssey EX! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your new minivan. The Odyssey EX is a fantastic choice for those who want the convenience of a minivan without sacrificing style or performance. It's impressive that the vehicle can comfortably seat up to 8 passengers (6 with plenty of room to spread out) and still have plenty of cargo space. The cabin is also very quiet, which is a great feature. It's understandable that you chose the EX model because you don't care for leather, especially in the hot Texas sun. It's a shame that some of the features you would like, such as the power lift gate, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning, are only available with leather. Additionally, you mentioned that the interior feels a little cheap compared to the Toyota Sienna LE. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Odyssey EX, and we hope you continue to enjoy your new minivan!

Great car so far! I'm still getting used to it, but it's much bigger than my old Honda.

After the 2012 Odyssey, the Honda entertainment system underwent some changes that resulted in a less than satisfactory experience. The 2015 system has proven to be difficult to use, with pairing to a phone being touch-and-go at best. Voice commands are also challenging to use, and using phone navigation (such as Waze) while also using the radio or other audio sources is not possible. The addition of a side-view blind-spot camera is a nice touch, but for my money, a front-of-car parking camera would be more useful. The side-view camera can be distracting and doesn't always provide a clear image. Overall, the 2012 Odyssey had better features than the 2015 model.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you recently brought home a new minivan from the dealer. When you test drove a different one, everything seemed great. However, now that you have a different color, you're feeling a bit dizzy while driving it. You mentioned that the front window seems curved and it's making your eyeballs and brain feel twisted and dizzy when looking to the front. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this before?

You're going to love the 2015 Odyssey! It's roomier, quieter, and loaded with technology. If you're looking for the ultimate experience, I highly recommend the Touring Elite. The surround sound system is so impressive, it feels like you're at the movies. I remember feeling like E.T. was sitting right next to me when the kids were watching a movie in the back. We're still keeping our 2006, but driving the 2015 is an absolute pleasure.
