1995 Honda Odyssey problems
For the North American market, the Honda Odyssey, is a minivan manufactured and marketed by Japanese automaker Honda since 1994, now in its fifth generation, which began in 2018.
The Odyssey had originally been conceived and engineered in Japan, in the wake of the country's economic crisis of the 1990s – which in turn imposed severe constraints on the vehicle's size and overall concept, dictating the minivan's manufacture in an existing facility with minimal modification. The result was a smaller minivan, in the compact MPV class, that was well received in the Japanese domestic market and less well received in North America. The first generation Odyssey was marketed in Europe as the Honda Shuttle.
Subsequent generations diverged to reflect market variations, and Honda built a plant in Lincoln, Alabama, United States, incorporating the ability to manufacture larger models. Since model year 1999, Honda has marketed a larger (large MPV-class) Odyssey in North America and a smaller Odyssey in Japan and other markets. Honda also offered the larger North American Odyssey in Japan as the LaGreat (ラグレイト, Ragureito) beginning in June 1999 through 2005. Both versions of the Odyssey were sold in Japan at Honda Clio dealership locations. Both versions of the Odyssey are currently sold in the Middle East.

AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-21
- VIN: JHMRA1841SC
- Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR HOME AT AROUND 20 MPH IN A SPEED BUMP AREA. I SUDDENLY BECAME AWARE OF A STRONG BURNING SMELL INSIDE THE CAR. I SLOWED, PULLED OVER AND REALIZED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS BLINKING. SECONDS LATER AN EXPLOSIVE SOUND ERUPTED. THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATED. IT COLLIDED WITH AND CRACKED THE WINDSHIELD, BROKE THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR MOUNT AND THREW PLASTIC CHUNKS AROUND THE CAR. SOME PLASTIC STRUCK ME. IT TOOK A FEW MINUTES FOR THE POWDERY SMOKE TO DIMINISH. ON INSPECTION I FOUND DAMAGE TO THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR AND TO THE DASHBOARD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. NOBODY BESIDES MYSELF WAS IN THE CAR, FORTUNATELY. THERE WAS ONLY A HAT ON THE PASSENGER SEAT. AFTER TAKING SOME PHONE PICTURES I TURNED THE CAR AROUND, DROVE IT HOME AND PARKED.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-09-06
- VIN: JHMRA186XSC
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: WE TURNED ON THE IGNITION TO WARM THE ENGINE A BIT AT ABOUT 9:50 ON THE MORNING OF SUNDAY, AUGUST 6, 2015. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES, THE PASSENGER-SIDE AIRBAG COMPLETELY EXPLODED. THE CAR WAS NOT IN MOTION, IT WAS PARKED, SO THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY. WE SUPPOSE THAT IT MUST BE DEFECTIVE. THE SHEER FORCE OF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT RESULTED IN A LARGE, CIRCULAR CRACK ON THE WINDSHIELD, WITH SMALLER HAIRLINE FRACTURES. FRAGMENTS OF BLACK PLASTIC WERE PROPELLED THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. A STRONG SMELL OF BURNING PLASTIC ENSUED AND FILLED THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. WE WILL NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT HAS BEEN PROPERLY INSPECTED, AS WE FEAR THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG MIGHT ALSO BE DEFECTIVE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE HONDA DEALERSHIP OUR INSURANCE COMPANY DIRECTED US TO WILL NOT BE OPEN UNTIL TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 DUE TO THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY. THIS WAS A VERY FRIGHTENING SITUATION. THANKFULLY, WE WERE NOT DRIVING AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, AND SO NOBODY SUFFERED PERSONAL INJURY - BUT THIS AIRBAG MALFUNCTION MIGHT WELL HAVE CAUSED WOUNDS FROM THE FLYING MATERIALS AND SHARDS OF PLASTIC, AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT - PERHAPS WITH MULTIPLE PEOPLE INVOLVED - OR SEVERE INJURY, POSSIBLY EVEN DEATH. THOUGH WE FEEL GRATEFUL TO HAVE AVOIDED THE WORST, WE ARE STILL WITHOUT A VEHICLE DUE TO A MECHANICAL DEFECT NOT CAUSED BY US.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-02-17
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: VEHICLE, 1995 HONDA ODYSSEY, RANDOMLY AND SUDDENLY STALLED--ENGINE SUDDENLY QUIT AND DASH LIGHTS WENT OUT. ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTART, THEN WOULD START BUT IMMEDIATELY QUIT WHEN IGNITION KEY WAS RELEASED FROM START POSITION. ALSO, DASH LIGHTS BEHAVED ABNORMALLY WHEN TRYING TO RESTART-- THEY ALL BLINKED TOGETHER IN RANDOM FASHION, OR TOGETHER DIMMED AND WENT OUT, OR SIMPLY WOULD NOT COME ON AT ALL. THIS STALL, OR FAILURE TO START AND RUN, HAS OCCURRED WHETHER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN WARM AND RUNNING FOR 30 MINUTES OR MORE, OR HAS BEEN PARKED AND COLD OVERNIGHT. THIS RANDOM STALL HAS NOW HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF HIGH SPEED HEAVY TRAFFIC. BUT FOR A FORTUNATE OPENING AND QUICK MANEUVER TO A SAFETY LANE, WE AND PROBABLY OTHER MOTORISTS WOULD HAVE CRASHED, BURNED AND DIED. WE ARE NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR FEAR OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING AGAIN BUT WITH TRAGIC RESULTS. WE HAVE JUST LEARNED THERE HAVE BEEN SEPARATE GOVERNMENT ORDERED RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM YEARS AGO IN AUSTRALIA AND IN CANADA. WHERE HAS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BEEN? OWNED BY BIG BUSINESS AND BIG MONEY? ON AN EIGHT YEAR VACATION WITH GEORGE (WORTHLESS) BUSH? BOTH, I'M SURE. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-07-26
- VIN: JHMRA186XSC
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: FIRST PURCHASED FOUR PEPBOY TIRES (SE P205/65R15) ON 05-17-2002, WITH A 80,000 MILE WARRANTY. ON 03-29-2004, WITH ONLY 34,000 MILES ON THE TIRES, THE TOP LAYER OF RUBBER LIFTED FROM THE TIRE AND PEELED OFF, ALMOST CREATING AN ACCIDENT. 6,000 MILES LATER, THE OTHER TIRES BEGAN TO BUBBLE LIKE THE FIRST AND HAD TO BE REPLACED WITH NEW TIRES. TODAY, 02-27-2006 WITH REPLACED TIRES 30,000 MILES ON THEM, THE FIRST TIRE IS STARTING TO BUBBLE AND SEPARATE. I BELIEVE THESE TIRES ARE INTENTIONALLY MADE TO ONLY WITHSTAND ABOUT THIRTY-THOUSAND MILES OF WEAR AND THEY BEGIN TO SEPARATE, WHICH CAN CREATE A FATAL ACCIDENT. THESE TIRES PEPBOYS "FUTURA PLUS TOUR SE," WITH THE 80,000 MILE WARRANTY NEED TO BE RECALLED AND PEPBOYS BE FINED FOR FALSE ADVERTISING AND CREATING A DANGEROUS TIRE. THIS IS THE SECOND SET OF FOUR TIRES THAT HAVE LIFTED WITH ONLY THIRTY-THOUSAND MILES ON THEM WITH AN 80,000 MILE WARRANTY.....*NM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-04-20
- VIN: JHMRA1879SC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I NEEDED TO TAKE MY SON TO THE DR.'S OFFICE AND WHEN I WENT TO START MY 1995 HONDA ODYSSEY IT WOULDN'T START. I HAD TO HOLD THE KEY ON IN THE RUN POSITION, GIVE IT GAS AND PUT IT IN DRIVE AND IT WAS ABLE TO GO. CAR SEEMED TO BE OK AFTER THAT AND I HAD TO TAKE MY DISABLED FATHER-IN-LAW TO RUN ERRANDS WE WENT AHEAD. WHILE WAITING FOR HIM TO GET A RX, I HAD THE CAR RUNNING AS IT WAS A COLD DAY AND MY 3 YEAR OLD WAS IN THE CAR. IT QUIT RUNNING AFTER A MINUTE AND I WASN'T ABLE TO START IT AGAIN FOR A FEW MINUTES. TOLD MY HUSBAND ABOUT IT WHEN I PICKED HIM UP AND HE CHECKED THE OIL ETC. AND THEN IT SEEMED TO BE FINE. NEXT DAY MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING HOME IN TRAFFIC AND THE CAR DIED ON HIM RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING! SOME OTHER DRIVERS HELPED HIM PUSH IT OFF THE ROAD AND THEN SOMEONE USED JUMPER CABLES AND IT STARTED RUNNING AGAIN. AFTER A FEW MINUTES IT DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. AFTER CHECKING BATTERY CONNECTIONS ETC. AND TRYING TO GET IT TO START AGAIN, FINALLY AFTER AN HOUR IT STARTED. WENT TO AUTO PARTS STORE AND HAD BATTERY TESTED - WAS AT 1/2 CAPACITY SO REPLACED IT THINKING IT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE AUTO PART STORE IT DIED AGAIN RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. WE DID RESEARCH ON THE WEB AND DISCOVERED IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT WAS RECALLED ON LATER YEARS WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH. CALLED THE DEALER THIS MORNING TO SEE IF OUR VIN # WAS ON THE LIST AND IT IS NOT!!! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY I HAVE TO PAY FOR A PROBLEM THAT IS KNOWN TO EXIST BECAUSE MY CAR YEAR IS NOT ON THE APPROVED LIST. IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME PART FOR OUR 1995 HONDA ODYSSEY AS FOR THE 1997 ONES + THAT WERE RECALLED.*JB
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

I MANAGED TO AVOID A CRASH AND TURN INTO A DRIVEWAY. IT STARTED UP AFTER A FEW TRIES. IT IS NOW AT A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP. MECHANIC SAYS IT IS IGNITION SWITCH FAILURE. I WOULD HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT FOR SOME REASON IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN IGNITION SWITCH RECALL #02VI20000. WILL HAVE LOCAL MECHANIC REPAIR, WOULD LIKE HONDA TO REIMBURSE.*AK
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-02-20
- VIN: JHMRA1864SC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: IGNITION SWITCH BURNT UP WHILE TRAVELING WITH FAMILY CAUSING THE MOTOR TO SHUT DOWN INCLUDING ALL POWER (BRAKES, STEERING, DASH INDICATORS). SEEMS TO BE THE SAME PROBLEM THAT HONDA RECALLED ON 1997-2000 VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE IS A 1995 HONDA ODYSSEY WITH 128000 MILES. THE SWITCH FAILED SEVERAL TIMES ON A 4 HOUR DRIVE HOME BEFORE FINALLY FAILING COMPLETELY THE FOLLOWING DAY. HONDA CHOOSES NOT TO COVER THIS DEFECTIVE PART, SINCE THE VIN DOESN'T MATCH THEIR DATABASE SEARCH WITH THE 1997-2000 RECALL.*AK

Wow, you've driven nearly 200,000 miles! That's amazing! You've only had to replace a few non-wear and tear items like the brake master cylinder at 90k, radiator at 120k, and AC switch valve. It's impressive that the original wear and tear parts like the alternator, starter, exhaust, and shocks are still going strong. It sounds like you've owned many cars over the past 25 years, but this one is definitely one of the most reliable. With such great performance, there's no doubt it will reach 300k+ miles!

I leased this Odyssey in December 1995, then purchased it. It now has 118,000 miles and has been trouble-free. The only issue I had was when the muffler fell off right after the warranty ended, but Honda replaced it free of charge. My wife loves this car and does not want to trade it for a newer one! I have owned five Hondas, and all of them have been reliable and carefree. The interior has held up exceptionally well, and the motor is still strong. I will get a new CR-V when my wife decides to give it up...

It's unfortunate that my 95 EX is being donated next week due to an accident caused by another driver. I want to remind everyone that timing belts should be changed every 90K, but it's not necessary to have it done by a Honda dealer. You also don't have to replace the water pump. At 90K, I had the car tuned and the brakes replaced. Overall, it's a great value for a used car! While it may struggle a bit on hills and the engine can be a bit noisy, the passing and acceleration speed is more than adequate for both highway and city driving. This car has been incredibly reliable and has required very few repairs over the years, making it the best and most cost-effective vehicle I've ever owned. And with almost one million miles of Honda driving, I can definitely vouch for their durability and longevity!

I love this van! She's a true workhorse and just won't quit. It's a shame they don't make them like this anymore.

The Odyssey is a unique vehicle, more like a Honda Civic wagon on steroids than a typical minivan. The '95-98 models, in particular, have a cool factor due to their smaller size. Our own Odyssey, equipped with a 2.2 liter engine, is surprisingly efficient and functional. The ride is smooth, the mileage is great, and the visibility is outstanding. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in the market for a minivan. It even fits into compact spaces and can hold up to six passengers!
