Chrysler Town and country problems

The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.

Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.

Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

Latest negative Chrysler Town and country car reviews

  1. Johan Hauck 2025-07-29

    Vehicle year: 1997

We have had no repair issues with our new car, and have only performed regular maintenance. However, we have noticed a significant issue with the headlights. It is surprising that a car with such poor headlights is legal to sell. We often have to use the brights while driving, yet have never been flashed by other drivers. The dims are essentially useless, and the brights only slightly improve visibility.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the vehicle I purchased. After my test ride, I noticed that it had a tendency to drift to the right. Although it has been in the shop 5 times in the last 10 months to try to correct the drifting, the issue still persists. The dealer has been very helpful and made several attempts to fix the problem, including removing the factory struts and installing new ones that allow more adjustment. While it is better with these new struts, there is still a noticeable steering imbalance. The head man at the dealer explained that the 2008-2010 models are extremely tight, and any variance in the alignment can cause the vehicle to not drive straight. It can be frustrating to drive around in a new vehicle and always have to steer it defensively! I would recommend test driving your vehicle first before you sign on the dotted line. Thank you for listening to my experience!

I've owned a Touring for 15 months and have had no problems. Recently, the passenger side airbag light came on after I gave a ride to a friend who weighs 250 pounds, while my wife only weighs 120 pounds. I believe this was due to the Occupant Classification System. The van has good gas mileage on the highway, but it's a bit disappointing in town. Overall, I'm very happy with the van's features. However, the trip computer can be a bit complicated, especially when trying to check it while on the road. Recently, I helped my daughter move into her college duplex. We had her things in storage over the summer, and I thought it would take 5 or 6 trips to move everything, but we were able to do it in just two trips. The amount of storage with the 2nd and 3rd row seats down is truly amazing!

We purchased a 2009 Town and Country LX with an extended warranty. However, we experienced some issues with the transmission a few months after we got it. Although the issue cleared up a few days later, it acted up again during a recent cross-country trip. We took it to Chrysler, and they provided us with a brand new 2012 version for a rental. Unfortunately, we encountered problems with that too, as the engine light and red lighting bolt light came on while driving on the highway. Although the issue went away a week later, it reappeared for a few days before disappearing again. After picking up our van from Chrysler, the transmission went out while we were on the highway. The dealer informed us that they changed the solenoid pack. We are confident that the issue has been resolved now.

I have had a few issues with my van since purchasing it three years ago. Unfortunately, the extended warranties do not cover the recent blind spot detection defect, which is quite expensive to fix. Additionally, the leather seats have cracked and the van does not handle well in snowy conditions. Despite these setbacks, I am confident in my decision to upgrade to the loaded Touring L model from my previous Honda Odyssey.

Before we bought our T&C, we did a lot of research and spent many hours test driving different brands, including Toyota, Nissan, Kia, and even Honda. However, none of them seemed to fit our lifestyle. With four kids, two dogs, and a need for cargo space, towing, and off-road capabilities (for off-the-grid camping), the T&C was the clear winner. The stow-and-go feature is a big thumbs up, and the reclining second and third rows are also a huge plus. Overall, it's much better than the other brands I mentioned. My T&C has now clocked 150,000 highway miles, and I was initially worried that the transmission would start giving me problems around 50-70,000 miles. Unfortunately, Chrysler/Dodge transmissions are not known for their reliability. However, I still have warranty coverage, and I'm sure it will be covered 100% for hard parts. I'll only have to pay around $300 for soft parts like oil and gaskets. I absolutely love this van and hope to keep it for a long time, even after I get the transmission fixed. I can't imagine driving anything else. By the way, I'm the hubby, and I'm not ashamed to say that I love driving my wife's T&C, even though my personal vehicle is a Ram 3500 heavy-duty. Just saying!

You drove 4 hours through a 22 inch snowstorm with almost no other cars on the road at 55 mph, and your vehicle handled beautifully. You mentioned that you have owned 4 other AWD or 4 wheel drive vehicles and this one is the best. The interior design of the seats couldn't be better and it has good fuel economy for its size. It handles like a car, especially when turning, but gives you a good view of the road. You mentioned that you feel safe driving it, which is great to hear, and it has an excellent safety rating.

I was impressed the first time I saw it, and driving it was even better with the heated seats and dual control heat/air. I purchased the vehicle and loved it, until I got stranded a week later. Unfortunately, the key wouldn't move. After getting it towed, I found out that there is a bulletin on the ignition column that happens a lot with this particular vehicle, and there are no aftermarket parts available, making it expensive to replace. The mileage isn't that good either compared to my 1994 Plymouth Voyager that I had for a year before this. I'm not too crazy about the bucket seats in the middle, as they are very hard to adjust to lower the back to recline.

I purchased my T&C for $8,000 with 80,000 miles. It's a silver beauty with gray leather interior that is still in great shape. I have replaced the fog lamps, headlights, and windshield to give it a new look. Currently, it has 140,000 miles on it and I have had to do some repairs such as a $300 transmission repair, new brakes, battery, tires, and driver's side power window switch. Despite all this, it still runs reliably, quietly, and is very comfortable. The three-zone air conditioning system works great and keeps the car cool. I am surprised at the poor reviews this car has received. Mine still drives like new and looks great both inside and out. I guess I got lucky with my purchase. I plan to keep it until it turns to dust. My neighbors have a 1999 T&C that they use daily and have put through a lot of wear and tear, but it still runs like a champ with 240,000 miles on it.

At 71,000 miles, I experienced two major unusual repairs. At 70K, I found oil leaking in my driveway, which turned out to be a leaking oil filter housing made of plastic. Unfortunately, the repair was not covered by the secret warranty as I was just over the years in time. The cost to repair was $1000.00. Despite this, my van still drives like a charm! At 57,000 miles, I experienced another unusual issue with leaking transmission fluid in my driveway, which required the replacement of transmission oil cooling lines at a cost of $350.00. Although I was not too happy with these repairs, I still love my van. At 54,000 miles and 1.5 years of ownership, I noticed rust bubbles coming up on the lip of the hood where it meets the grill. I took it to the dealer this week, and they took pictures and sent them to Chrysler. I am currently awaiting their response on the disposition. I recently put new Michelins Defender LTX M/S tires on at Costco during the September deal for $646.00. Unfortunately, the guy did not remove the old weights, and the truck was shaking. I had to return and get all wheels rebalanced. I am not due for major service until 60K miles, and my van runs like a gem. It is great to haul stuff with and in. Prior to these repairs, I only had a couple of oil changes for maintenance and a burned-out LED rear light, which cost around $100.00 for a knock-off online. Mopar wanted way too much money for an OEM light assembly. I purchased this great bargain vehicle just coming off a 2-year lease, and it had just 36K miles on it. I find it comfortable to drive with lots of bells and whistles. I particularly like the ride, comfort, auto start and push-button start, heated front and rear seats and wheel, lane change assist, which is very helpful for blind areas in the rear, rear power stow n go seat, which is power, back up sensors, camera, etc. as they are great for warning me when something is approaching. However, there is still room for improvement. The navigation system in this vehicle is a Garmin, but it can be difficult to see from the driver's seat and slow to respond when you miss a turn. The colors are poor and hard to see in bright light. I did a software update, but unfortunately, the radio blew up. Luckily, Chrysler Uconnect covered it with a new radio under the extended warranty. The maps are outdated and have limited ability, so I don't think the navigation system is worth the extra money or the cost of updating the maps, which can be done for $150.00 from a third-party company on a USB. The wipers have auto sensors, but they can go crazy in the rain, sometimes wiping so fast that you think they're going to fly off the windshield. When the lights are on auto and come on at dusk, the entire dash goes dark, and you have to adjust the interior light knob. The rearview mirror is very small, and I wish it were bigger to see more. The vehicle came with a can of air and a jack, but there is no spare tire, which can be purchased for $255 on Amazon (dealer prices are higher). I had a Class 3 Hitch put on the vehicle for towing a trailer, and it works nicely. Overall, it's a good bargain for a used vehicle. When shopping, pay attention to the listed options, as these vehicles all have different options. I found that many used vehicle salespeople have no clue about them, and the dealers list options that aren't actually on the vehicle. I recommend going online and researching the VIN for the original window sticker, which can be obtained for free, and then checking the vehicle to make sure it actually has the listed options. Check underneath for a spare tire! Also, make sure all options are actually working before purchasing. This is our third Chrysler Mini Van, and it's much improved over the 2001 model we still have. By the way, the 2014 model was the last year that Chrysler gave the longer warranty on the engine, transmission, rust, roadside assistance, etc. - 5 years or 100K.
