1998 Chrysler Town and country problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.

Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.

Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

Negative 1998 Chrysler Town and country car reviews

  1. Nico Morissette 2024-07-14

Although this vehicle served us well until we reached 70,000 miles, we have experienced multiple electrical and starting issues since then. Despite taking it to the shop eight times, the problem was never resolved. While driving, all the gauges stop working, which can be concerning. Given the high price point and safety concerns, I cannot recommend purchasing another Chrysler product. Additionally, it is disheartening to hear about the lack of support provided to families affected by related accidents. I suggest avoiding this vehicle altogether. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a dealer or individual willing to take it off my hands.

  2. Ubaldo Donnelly 2024-06-21

The car has required several repairs, including a replacement evaporator, transmission and axle, and computer equipment. Additionally, new brakes and rotors have been needed on a regular basis. While the car was previously reliable, it has become a financial burden. Based on my experiences, I have decided not to purchase another Chrysler product in the future.

  3. Kieran Emard 2024-02-14

2 weeks ago, I acquired the 98 T&C mini van with 235K miles in a rather poor TLC condition. However, after a little elbow grease and clean up, I must say that I am quite pleased with that old bucket. Currently, I am only experiencing a few issues: 1) the rear windows stopped working a couple of days ago, 2) there isn't much room for a 300lbs driver, and 3) the power steering can be a bit difficult at times when parking. I am still trying to figure out the fourth issue 🤔

Positive 1998 Chrysler Town and country car reviews

  1. Manuel Abbott 2024-11-07

I bought the vehicle on a whim and it turned out to be the best decision ever! My wife was hesitant about driving a mini-van, but this one with 140K miles for $5800.00 (a steal) has been a game changer. Apart from replacing an ABS speed sensor 9 months later, the car has been running smoothly. With 151K miles on it, it still runs like a champ. It's the perfect luxury family vehicle for our family of 5 and my wife's Mercedes now collects dust in the garage. Needless to say, we'll never be without an LXI again. It's hands down the best auto value available!

  2. Adrien Schmeler 2024-10-26

I average over 20 miles per gallon with a 3.8 liter engine. The only problem I had was with the computer, wheel bearing, and fan switch, but they were all covered under warranty. This is the third one I've owned and it's the best yet. It seems to get better as it gets older.

  3. Norberto Dickens 2024-10-22

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I bought this car from a dealer and I'm only the second owner. The engine and transmission are still in great condition, but unfortunately, the rack started leaking at 220,000 miles. I'm considering getting it fixed just to see how much longer it will last. Overall, it's been a great car for us, although the towing capacity isn't the best. Take care!

  4. Elroy Feest 2024-10-19

This van may have a luxurious appearance, but it lacks durability. Despite initially experiencing minor electrical issues, such as lights on the radio going out, automatic door locks failing, and brake lights illuminating when turning, the problems escalated. The open door alarm even sounded while driving, despite all doors being closed. Unfortunately, it became clear that this van was headed for a major breakdown, as evidenced by the battery dying and subsequent failure of the air conditioner and rear-window heater. Despite taking it to multiple Chrysler repair shops, no issues were found. Although this van had 130,000 miles on it when traded in, it did not meet my expectations for longevity.

  5. Chelsey Wisozk 2024-09-26

This vehicle is one of the most pleasant to drive on the open road. However, I find it a bit of a nuisance to get around town in. My wife, on the other hand, has no trouble with it. Although we had to mill the heads at around 120,000 miles and replace the rear wheel bearing at 90,000 miles, the driver's side electric window motor was replaced and overall, it's a good vehicle. If given the choice, I would buy the shorter version.
