1996 Chrysler Town and country problems
The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.
Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.
Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

Common 1996 Chrysler Town and country problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Failures: The 1996 Chrysler Town & Country is known to have transmission problems, especially with the 4-speed automatic transmission used in most cars from 1990-1997. These transmissions are prone to premature failures, with issues arising after reaching operating temperature. Symptoms include failure to shift to higher gears when warm, indicating potential transmission failure.
- Check Engine Light (CEL) Issues: Some owners have experienced problems indicated by the Check Engine Light (CEL). In one case, a seller mentioned that the CEL was on, and the transmission was not shifting properly. This could suggest underlying issues with the automatic transmission, although the CEL may also reflect engine problems. Proper diagnosis by a transmission specialist is recommended to identify the root cause of the issue.
These problems highlight the need for thorough inspection and maintenance of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country, especially concerning the transmission system and potential engine-related issues. Owners should be vigilant about addressing these common problems to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

Chrysler dropped the Town and Country minivan for two reasons. Because it was redundant with and competitive with the Pacifica and (now) Voyager vans. This car is great, but unfortunately, there have been some issues with the serpentine belts. Even going through a puddle can cause the belt to come off, which is a major safety concern, especially when driving through mountain passes. Despite having the pulleys and belts replaced by the dealer, the problem persists, resulting in costly repairs and downtime. The loss of power without this belt is a serious issue. However, I am confident that we can find a solution to this problem and ensure that this car runs smoothly and safely.

Chrysler's 1996 Town & Country Mini-van had exceptional comfort and special features, but unfortunately, the quality did not match up. Despite being a joy to drive, the high-priced repairs, including a replaced transmission, fallen front windows, and replaced headlamps, have detracted from the positive aspects of the van. Additionally, the AC has a slow leak, and the van has been experiencing issues with the powertrain computer module. As a confident consumer, I will conduct thorough research before purchasing my next vehicle, and Chrysler will not be at the top of my list.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying the Town and Country minivan! It sounds like it has plenty of space, power, and handles well. Plus, it's comfortable and stylish. It definitely seems like the perfect choice for anyone in need of a reliable and practical vehicle.

Hi there! My wife and I purchased this van when it had 150,000 miles on it. So far, we haven't had any major mechanical issues, but we're starting to get a bit nervous now that it's at 165,000 miles. The radio presets have worn out and it's a bit slow to stop, but overall it's been a great van. We're considering getting a newer one. By the way, have you experienced the wipers coming on erratically for about 3 swipes? This is our first Mopar van, but my mother has owned 4 Voyagers and never had any major problems. Although, we have heard of others having transmission trouble.

I was initially drawn to the design, but unfortunately, my experience with this vehicle was not positive. Despite having the door locks repaired under warranty several times, there were always new issues that arose. Additionally, the water pump failed at 51000 miles, followed shortly by the transmission at 52000 miles. While I was not aware of the transmission problems beforehand, it seems to be a common issue among others. I also had to replace two batteries, a starter, and the wipers malfunctioned. Overall, my experience with this Chrysler/Dodge product was disappointing, and I do not plan on purchasing another one in the future.

I was disappointed to find that my Chrysler did not improve over the years. Unfortunately, the radio broke, the power steering pump leaked and needed to be replaced, the AC condenser leaked, one of the sliding door locks broke and needed to be replaced, and the wipers would turn on unexpectedly. To make matters worse, the right side tie rod broke twice in two years while my wife was driving it, despite the van only having 67,000 miles on it. I would not recommend this van to anyone. Please consider other options.

Although we have 135,000 miles on our T&C Lxi Van - it's cost us a small fortune to get there. The comfort, ride, and space is great. It's the reliabilty that is lacking! Our van has the special (we paid extra!) paint - which started to peel while under warranty. Chrysler did repaint the top of the van - but, it's been peeling elsewhere ever since (out of warranty). The headlights are so clouded we can barely see at night to drive and Chrysler's response to this problem - is oh..well, it's out of warranty, and you can replace the headlights - they only cost about $275 each! This is our last Chrysler product!!

I was hoping that Chrysler had resolved their design and reliability problems, but unfortunately, my experience with this vehicle was not great. We had to replace brake pads multiple times and encountered issues with water pumps, O2 sensors, and valve gasket leaks. Eventually, the transmission failed, which seems to be a common issue based on the number of similar complaints online. Despite this, when I contacted Chrysler's Customer Service headquarters, they were not very helpful. Overall, my experience was disappointing.

This vehicle incurred a significant maintenance cost of over 6 years and 96K miles. Due to this experience, I have decided not to purchase another Daimler Chrysler product.
