1994 Chrysler Town and country problems

The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.

Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.

Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

Common 1994 Chrysler Town and country problems

The Chrysler Town & Country, produced in 1994, is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. The most frequently reported issues revolve around electrical problems, particularly with the throttle control module and power control, which can cause the vehicle to stall or shut down while driving.

  • Stalling or Shutting Down While Driving: This issue has been reported by numerous 1994 Chrysler Town & Country owners. The vehicle may stall or shut down without any apparent pattern, sometimes multiple times within a short distance. This problem can be caused by various factors, including the throttle control module, power control, or even the battery. Mechanics have struggled to diagnose and resolve this issue, with some suggesting that it could be a bad battery or a problem with the power control.
  • Limp Mode: Some 1994 Chrysler Town & Country owners have reported experiencing limp mode, where the transmission won't go past second gear. This issue may be related to the throttle control module, sensors, or the EATX fuse & relay. In some cases, replacing sensors or the EATX Safety Shut Down Relay has resolved the problem. However, other issues, such as bad connections between the trans control module and sensors, may also contribute to this problem.
  • EGR Valve Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the EGR valve, which can cause the engine to stall or run poorly. Replacing the EGR valve has resolved this issue for some owners, particularly those with 2010 Town & Country models. However, this issue may not be exclusive to the 2010 model year.
  • Electrical Problems: The 1994 Chrysler Town & Country has been known to have electrical problems, which can manifest in various ways, such as the stabilizer light going on, power steering failing, and brakes not responding. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and may require the use of a Chrysler DRB scan tool to identify the root cause.

These common problems with the 1994 Chrysler Town & Country can be frustrating for owners, particularly when they are difficult to diagnose and resolve. While some issues can be addressed by replacing specific parts or sensors, other problems may require more extensive diagnostic work to identify and correct.

Why did Chrysler discontinue the Town and Country?

Chrysler dropped the Town and Country minivan for two reasons. Because it was redundant with and competitive with the Pacifica and (now) Voyager vans. The Voyager takes over the low-cost market that the T&C in its format for the past couple of years has held and the Pacifica takes the higher end market.

Positive 1994 Chrysler Town and country car reviews

  1. Wilfred Terry 2024-11-19

You've driven many miles and it's been a great experience! Although there were a couple of issues, such as the fan belt coming loose and the radiator fan quitting at 150,000 miles, they were quickly resolved. The car has quick acceleration and is very roomy.

  2. Buford Senger 2024-11-16

This van is absolutely amazing compared to the Ford Windstar I used to have. I purchased it brand new and it now has over 200,000 miles on it. I tried driving the Ford Windstar and then the Honda Odyssey, but I couldn't stand the lack of power those vans had. I plan on keeping my Town & Country for as long as possible. Even with 200,000 miles on it, it is still running strong with the original engine and transmission.

  3. Monserrate Dietrich 2024-11-09

I absolutely love my 1994 Chrysler Town & Country! It has been my trusty companion for 5 years now, and I have only had to replace a broken right taillight and the bulbs in the front fog lights. I did try out a 2002 Honda Odyssey, which had great ratings, but unfortunately, after only two weeks and 273 miles, the transmission gave out and had to be replaced. I then experienced further issues with the belt tensioner pulley and a gas leak, which left me stranded around 2000 miles later. After that, I decided to sell it and test drive the Sienna, but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. Despite my disappointment, I am grateful to have found my reliable Chrysler Town & Country.

  4. David Klein 2024-10-22

This minivan was a great performer. It had a sporty yet luxurious ride, handled nimbly, and the powerful 3.8L V6 was very quick in acceleration. While the gas mileage can be low with cheap gas, overall it is a great van to own.

  5. Maverick McClure 2024-10-01

This van is great! It deserves to be more popular!
