2006 Chrysler Town and country problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.

Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.

Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

Common 2006 Chrysler Town and country problems

The 2006 Chrysler Town and Country is a popular minivan known for its comfortable seats, low ownership costs, and cargo space. However, it has some common problems that owners have reported, particularly with the steering system, seat motors, and sliding doors.

One of the most common issues is power steering system leaks, which tend to occur around 70,000 miles. The rack and pinion is a weak spot where seals often fail, and replacing the assembly can cost around $1,000. This problem is often caused by the wear and tear of the vehicle's components over time.

Another common problem is worn-out seat motors, which can fail around 90,000 miles. The seat motors wear out with excessive use, and replacing them can cost around $450. This issue can be particularly frustrating for owners who use the seat motors frequently, such as those who transport multiple passengers or use the van for ride-sharing services.

Power sliding door problems are also common in the 2006 Town and Country, with many cars experiencing issues after 100,000 miles. The sliding motor can break as the van ages, and replacing it can cost around $600. This problem can be especially inconvenient for owners who rely on the sliding doors for easy access to the van's cargo space.

The 2006 Town and Country has also had some recalls, including issues with the windshield wiper motor, glass, towing hitch, and air bags. These recalls are typically addressed by the dealership or a certified mechanic, and owners are usually notified by mail or email.

Despite these common problems, the 2006 Chrysler Town and Country is generally considered a reliable vehicle, with a properly maintained van able to last around 200,000 miles. Regular annual maintenance costs are affordable, and most 2006 Town and Country vans will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace wheel hubs, liftgate lock actuators, and the A/C compressor as needed.

In summary, the 2006 Chrysler Town and Country is a reliable vehicle with some common problems that owners should be aware of. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help ensure that the van lasts as long as possible and provides reliable transportation for years to come.

Negative 2006 Chrysler Town and country car reviews

I have owned two T&Cs and I absolutely love driving the one I have now, just as I did with the one I had before. However, there are a few issues that I have encountered. Firstly, the power steering filter needs to be cleaned regularly, otherwise it can produce an unpleasant whining sound. Secondly, the electronics can be a bit temperamental, with motherboards, radios and interior lights sometimes needing attention. Lastly, the paint job can be prone to fading, which can make the vehicle look older than it actually is. The rust on the edges is also a bit of a concern, and the tinted windows can produce a ripple effect that is not ideal. The back seats can be a bit cramped for passengers, and if all the seats are in use, there is not much storage space in the back. Despite these issues, I still love driving my T&C. It is very fuel efficient on long journeys, although in the city, I tend to get around 15mpg, which is not as good.

The 3.6L engine may have less power than the 4.0L, but it delivers a smoother performance. However, I still prefer the 4.0L engine. This vehicle is perfect for long trips with kids, thanks to the essential rear DVD. The gas mileage is not too bad, averaging at 19.5. I particularly like the (faux) wood trim and the soft leather accents on the seats. The transmission is smooth and shifts well. I also prefer the styling of this version from the front compared to the newer models. On the downside, all of the power door motors are loud, but they work fine. The navigation system is not user-friendly, with no touch screen and a rotor dial for all input. Additionally, there is no rear button for the tailgate, and there is much less cupholder and usable storage space. However, these issues were resolved in the '08 and up models.

If you search the Internet for town and country power steering, you may find that the rack and pinion, as well as the pump, may need to be replaced. Unfortunately, this can be quite costly. It is worth noting that there have been many complaints about this issue, and some people believe that there should be a recall.

The T&C base model is impressively equipped and offers great value at only 16.8k (including tax and lic) out the door. Compared to similarly priced Honda or Toyota models, the T&C saves you up to 10K. My wife and I are thrilled with the comfort, ride, and overall feel of the vehicle. Plus, the base model comes with many features that are optional on other brands, such as remote entry, tinted glass, smart airbag in the front seat, grocery hooks, hidden pullout drawer, lumbar support, car mats, and sliding door warning. These features alone would have cost me another 1K on other brands. As someone who previously owned 3 Hondas, I can confidently say that my first Chrysler has exceeded my expectations. If you're willing to negotiate, you can definitely come out as a winner!

Although the car was bought brand new in 2006, it has unfortunately experienced several issues since 2009. These issues include burning oil, a potential blown head gasket, a hairline crack in the gas tank, malfunctioning headlights, a non-functioning driver window, and faulty rear passenger door locks. While these problems are certainly frustrating, they are not uncommon in this model of car. It is important to address these issues promptly to ensure the car is safe and reliable. With proper attention and maintenance, this car can still provide reliable transportation for years to come.

In the past 10 years, I have owned 2 Dodge Caravans and 2 Chrysler Town and Country Limited. The first one was a 1993 Dodge Caravan, which I had for several years with no problems at all, except for a new battery one time. Then, I replaced it with a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan with 117K miles. I sold the van with over 200K miles and I only had to replace the alternator once, as well as the battery, tires, and brakes. After that, I got a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country with 70K miles. I had to replace the power steering pump, which is a common issue with this van, as well as the battery and brakes. Currently, I have a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country and the only problem I have had is with the power steering pump again. Overall, I think these vans are excellent, although they are not perfect vehicles.

My partner and I have four children together and we needed a vehicle that could safely transport them, especially on long trips. As an auto mechanic, I took my time researching and checking out several different brands. We found our 06 T & C at a Chrysler dealer with 58K miles. My partner loves the power doors and rear hatch, and with multiple DVD players we had installed, it is perfect for our family. The Stow & Go feature works well for food, cases of soda, and loads of DVDs, and there is plenty of room in the rear for two strollers and luggage. We did experience a problem with the left sliding door, but I was able to make the repair in about 45 minutes and it has been working perfectly ever since.

Congratulations on your first minivan purchase! It sounds like you made a great choice with the 2006 T&C. The perks of this van are definitely impressive, and it's great to hear that you and your family are enjoying them. The DVD sound system and power doors sound like they make life a lot easier, especially when you have your hands full with baby items. The stow and go compartment is also a great feature to keep the car neat and clean. It's wonderful that your kids have plenty to do on those long road trips you love to take every year. Your husband has great taste - the Town and Country is a stylish choice. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  4. Eloy Ryan 2025-08-25

The 3.8L is amazing! Despite going through three sets of tires, a new radiator (which I installed myself), a cooling fan, and four sets of brakes, plus a set of belts, the car still drives like the day we bought it. The AC is ice-cold, and the stow and go feature is fantastic. Although one of the automatic side doors stopped working, it's not a big deal. We've taken countless trips of over 2500 miles with complete confidence. I couldn't ask for more from a vehicle, except maybe making it to 300k miles. It's the most comfortable and best-riding vehicle I've ever owned, and it tows our big boat with ease.

  5. Domenico Johnson 2025-08-19

We purchased the van brand new and have had very few issues with it. It has proven to be a reliable and comfortable vehicle. While I am slightly disappointed with the mileage of 21 hwy, even with the correct air pressure in the tires and a new air filter, I was hoping for better coming from an SUV. At the time of writing this review, the van is 6 years old with 78k miles, and the only problems we have encountered were a window regulator and an EGR valve. Overall, I would definitely recommend this vehicle to a friend. I do wish we had opted for the stow and go seating. I rated it as average for fun to drive, but it is a minivan after all. The value of all new vehicles is a bit of a joke, though.
