1999 Chrysler Town and country problems

The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.

Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.

Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

Common 1999 Chrysler Town and country problems

The Chrysler Town and Country is a popular minivan that was produced from 1989 to 2016. While there are many reliable years for this vehicle, there are also some years that owners have reported common problems with. One of these years is 1999, which has been noted for starting problems.

One owner of a 1999 Chrysler Town and Country reported that the vehicle would not start from time to time, but would start up again after months of not being driven. The owner had taken the vehicle to numerous repair shops, but each time the diagnostic computer showed nothing wrong. The owner also reported that the battery was brand new and was charging and discharging in a cycle.

The starting problem in the 1999 Chrysler Town and Country could be due to a variety of issues, including a bad starter or solenoid, a faulty ignition switch, or a problem with the wiring going from the ignition switch to the starter relay. It's also possible that the neutral safety switch is going bad, which is a safety feature that prevents the engine from starting if the transmission is not in "Park."

To diagnose the starting problem, it's recommended to first check the neutral safety switch. This can be done by shifting the transmission out of "Park" and into "Neutral," then back into "Park" and trying to start the engine again. If the engine starts, the neutral safety switch is likely the culprit and should be replaced.

Another possible issue could be the starter or solenoid, which could be worn out or have dirty or damaged contacts. In some cases, cleaning or replacing the contacts may solve the problem. If the starter or solenoid is the issue, it may be necessary to replace the entire unit.

Overall, the 1999 Chrysler Town and Country has been reported to have starting problems, which can be caused by a variety of issues. It's recommended to first check the neutral safety switch and try shifting the transmission out of "Park" to see if the engine starts. If the problem persists, it may be necessary to check the starter, solenoid, ignition switch, or wiring to diagnose and fix the issue.

Negative 1999 Chrysler Town and country car reviews

  1. Dock Cormier 2024-10-27

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that your vehicle has had some major repairs done, including a new transmission, CV axels, driveline, radiators, and tune ups. It sounds like you've taken great care of it! However, I understand that the cost of these repairs may now exceed the blue book value of the vehicle. Additionally, it seems like the rear leaf springs may be experiencing some issues. Have you considered exploring other options? Let me know if you need any help or advice!

  2. Bertha Kuhlman 2024-10-04

It sounds like you've had a tough time with your vehicle this year. It's frustrating when things keep breaking down and causing problems. It's understandable that you no longer feel comfortable recommending this vehicle to your friends. Perhaps in the future, you might consider a Honda or Toyota, which may have better trade-in or resale value.

  3. Bertram Ward 2024-03-29

I purchased a 99 AWD LXI on a lease return with only 27K miles. Unfortunately, the transmission failed at 30K miles, which is out of warranty, resulting in a $2500 expense. Additionally, there were some issues with the electrical system. According to the transmission experts, the AWD design is not built strong enough. It is disappointing that Chrysler chose to cut corners in design and manufacturing.

  4. Ricky Bashirian 2024-03-19

The 99 is a stylish vehicle that drives tight and has a nice interior. While the chrome wheels look super, they are prone to inner corrosion, which caused a flat tire that took two strong men an hour and a call to the dealer to free the wheel. The plastic front end drags on curbs when parking, which can be inconvenient. It is important to note that the vehicle has a safety issue where you can shift into gear without putting your foot on the brake, so caution is advised. Additionally, the gearshift is easy to accidentally bump, which may not be ideal for a family van. However, the AWD option is great for winter climates. It is worth noting that the PCV Valve may freeze up when it is below zero, causing the vehicle to stall at lights. Fortunately, it is easy to start again by bumping up to neutral and cranking.

Positive 1999 Chrysler Town and country car reviews

  1. Reginald Padberg 2025-01-02

This van rides very nicely. It's even nicer than the Honda and Dodge. The heated leather seats really make it a comfortable ride. It also has good power for pulling out of side streets. Like all the vans we drove, you do need to apply the brakes hard to get the van to slow down quickly. The only thing we don't like is that it doesn't have automatic temperature control.

  2. Herman Willms 2024-10-06

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with Chrysler minivans. I've been driving them since 1994, including Dodge and Plymouth models, but the Town and Country Limited is by far the best built and most comfortable van I've ever had. I've travelled to 34 states in the past 10 years and have never had any issues or breakdowns. In fact, all but 2 of my 6 vans have had over 100,000 miles on them! It's safe to say that my family loves them too - we currently have 5 in our immediate family (mom, sisters, and brother-in-law). By the way, I'm a certified master mechanic with 15 years at a Chrysler dealer and now an independent shop owner for 3 years. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

  3. Johnathon Brakus 2024-08-27

The Chrysler Town & Country is an excellent van that offers great value for money. While the transmission may be a weak point, it is reassuring to know that the Chrysler rebuilt transmission comes with a 3 year 36M mile warranty. Overall, I highly recommend the Chrysler Town & Country, especially if you can find a loaded up LXI or Limited at wholesale prices.

  4. Darien Kreiger 2024-08-12

You've driven over 100,000 miles with no problems or repairs, just regular oil and filter changes every 4000 miles. The only expense you've had is one set of tires!

  5. Garth Blick 2024-08-11

It's great to hear about your experience with the Chrysler minivan, although it seems like it requires a lot of maintenance and repair. This is actually our second Chrysler minivan, the first being a 1996 model which had a lot of faults with mechanics and electronics (although it was the first model year). When we purchased this one, we opted for the extended warranty. On the positive side, it's a supremely functional, easy and fun to drive van with excellent power and handling, and it's very comfortable too. The Limited version is well equipped with luxurious options. However, on the downside, we did have to purchase the extended warranty for $1800 and Chrysler has performed over $5000 in repairs over the 4 years/70,000 miles that we've owned it, including suspension, transmission, electrical, air conditioning, trim, and belts - some of which have needed repair more than once!
