2009 Chrysler Town and country problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.

Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.

Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

Common 2009 Chrysler Town and country problems

The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country has faced several issues, as reported by car owners and documented by various sources. Below are some of the most common problems.

  • Harsh Shifting and Shuddering: Several owners have reported issues with harsh shifting and shuddering in their 2009 Chrysler Town & Country vehicles. This problem can be caused by various factors, including worn-out transmission components or issues with the vehicle's drivetrain. The issue can lead to a less smooth ride and, in some cases, may require transmission replacement or repair.
  • Airbag Deployment Issues: The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country has been subject to recalls related to airbag deployment. In some cases, the driver's airbag cover may become a projectile in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Chrysler has issued recalls to replace the driver's airbag cover with a redesigned cover, free of charge.
  • Faulty Ignition Switch: The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country has been subject to recalls related to a faulty ignition switch. Road conditions or other jarring events may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and depowering key safety systems. This issue can increase the risk of a crash and/or the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Chrysler has issued recalls to modify the ignition switch, free of charge.
  • Wire Harness Issues: The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country has been subject to recalls related to improperly routed wire harnesses. In some cases, the lower sliding door hinge bracket may make contact with the wire harness, wearing through the insulation and potentially causing a short circuit. This issue can lead to overheating and, in rare cases, a vehicle fire.
  • Fuel Fill Pipe Contact: Some 2009 Chrysler Town & Country vehicles that have been altered for wheelchair accessibility may have issues with the fuel fill pipe coming into closer proximity to the left rear tire. In rough or aggressive driving situations, the tire may intermittently contact the fuel fill pipe, potentially causing a hole in one or both components. This issue can lead to loss of vehicle control in the event of tire pressure loss or a vehicle fire in the event the fuel pipe is compromised.
  • Brake Line Issues: Some 2009 Chrysler Town & Country vehicles that have been altered for wheelchair accessibility may have issues with the rear brake lines not being properly routed and secured during the alteration. If not routed and secured properly, the brake lines could rub against the vehicle, causing a brake fluid leak. A brake fluid leak could result in a loss of braking ability, potentially causing a crash.
  • Blind Spot Detection System Corrosion: The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country has been subject to recalls related to unused electrical connectors for the blind spot detection system. These connectors may become corroded and could short circuit, causing a variety of conditions. If the fuse for this circuit does not blow, the connectors could overheat and potentially catch fire.
  • Climate System Failures: Some owners have reported issues with the climate system in their 2009 Chrysler Town & Country vehicles. Problems include the heater blower stopping altogether and the air conditioning compressor requiring replacement.

These issues have been reported by car owners and documented by various sources. If you own a 2009 Chrysler Town & Country, it is essential to stay informed about recalls and safety notices related to your vehicle. Hi there! I noticed that your vehicle has had some issues with the front wheel bearing, engine performance, gas mileage, and brakes. Have you considered looking into Japanese vans for your next vehicle? They have a great reputation for reliability and efficiency. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Devonte Cummings 2024-10-20

Despite experiencing some issues with our minivan, we have been proactive in seeking solutions. We have visited three different dealerships in an effort to resolve the issue, but unfortunately, it has not been fixed yet. While it can be frustrating to experience these problems, we understand that it is a new model and the manufacturer is still working out the kinks. We have been reassured that the vehicle has a lifetime warranty, which provides some peace of mind. However, we have expressed our concerns about the safety of the vehicle and the potential risks associated with the ongoing issue. We are confident that the dealership will continue to work with us to find a solution. In the meantime, we are looking forward to the end of our lease in a year and a half. We appreciate the efforts of the dealership and the manufacturer, but we have decided that a minivan is not the right fit for our family. We will be exploring other options in the future. Thank you for your understanding.

I purchased my T&C about a year ago because I wanted a beautiful car for my growing family. Unfortunately, a few months after purchasing it, I started experiencing electrical issues. The windshield wipers would come on and off by themselves, all dash lights would come on but all gauges would stop working, the radio would stop working, and no controls would work (such as power windows, door, hatch, etc). Even the dealer couldn't fix it! On top of that, after having the recall fixed on the ignition, it still isn't working correctly and the car won't shut completely off, which is draining the battery. The transmission also slips and I have to put power steering fluid in it every day. I have had a lot of trouble with this car and I don't think I will own another Dodge/Chrysler. Although they look nice and have tons of cargo space, they are not worth the trouble!

  4. Paxton Kuhn 2024-10-10

While I had great hopes for this vehicle, I was disappointed to find that it broke down frequently. It seemed like there was always something wrong with it. I am disappointed in the quality of workmanship and will not be purchasing another one.

  5. Luciano Smitham 2024-07-28

I bought this minivan used with only 13,000 miles on it. Since changing to Mobile 1 oil, I've been getting between 19 to 25 mpg, even when it's loaded heavily with seats stowed. Although I'm currently waiting in line with other owners for an improved air conditioner part to replace the original one that fails too often, I'm still happy with my purchase. Last year, my air conditioner failed and the only available replacement part was identical to the original. Despite its homely appearance, this is actually my 6th Chrysler minivan and I absolutely love driving it. It accelerates quietly and smoothly. The only issue I've had is that the sliding door on the passenger side doesn't operate from the inside and the leg room in the second-row seats is a bit tight unless the front seats are moved forward more than I'd like.

Congratulations on your new 2009 T & C! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the ride and experiencing great gas mileage. The 4.0 with trailer-tow sounds like a great choice, providing a strong pull with no lag or stutter. The 25th Anniversary edition with 17 inch wheels and tires is definitely a plus. It's wonderful to hear that your first trip to the East Coast was pleasant and issue-free. With 636 miles showing, you were getting an impressive 23.5 mpg. There's just something about a Ram Truck on the road! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  2. Stephan Schoen 2024-11-03

This is a 4L engine and the performance is great. However, even when driving very conservatively, the mileage is not as advertised. Additionally, the windshield is the most fragile I have ever experienced. Despite these issues, overall it is a very comfortable and fun vehicle to own.

  3. Nolan Bergstrom 2024-10-25

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my recent experience with my T&C. I just got back from a 2000 mile road trip and I'm happy to report that I had no issues at all. I used to own a 2005 and I have to say, the quality has been consistently great with both. In my opinion, they are by far the best vans on the road today. I also wanted to mention that the 4.0 engine is the best that I have had since my single days. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

  4. Terence Koepp 2024-09-22

I recently traded in my 1-year-old Honda Odyssey after the transmission failed. I didn't want to deal with that issue for the next four or five years, so I decided to try out a Chrysler. I must say, it's just as good as everyone says it is! The Stow and Go seats are absolutely wonderful. In comparison, with the Honda, you had to drag out the rear seats, and boy were they heavy! Overall, I couldn't be happier with my decision. I love my new car!

  5. Laurel Simonis 2024-08-26

We compared Honda's and T&C's and for the price, a T&C is unbeatable. I recently switched from a Maxima, so it took some getting used to, but I'm really enjoying it so far. I did decide to upgrade to the 4.0L and I think it was definitely worth it.
