2014 Chrysler Town and country problems

The Chrysler Town & Country is a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by Chrysler from 1990 to the 2016 model years. The third Chrysler minivan introduced in North America, the Town & Country adopted its nameplate from the flagship Chrysler station wagon line, adopting its exterior woodgrain trim as a design feature for several generations.
Marketed as the flagship of the Chrysler minivan line, five generations of the Town & Country were slotted above the extended-wheelbase Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager. For 2017, Chrysler retired the nameplate, with sixth-generation Chrysler-division minivans becoming the Chrysler Pacifica. After the 2016 model year, Chrysler marked the sale of its 12 millionth minivan (under all three nameplates). Produced almost continuously for 75 years (with the exception of World War II and 1989), the Town & Country nameplate is the longest-produced Chrysler; its longevity is second only to the Chevrolet Suburban in worldwide automotive history.
Chrysler assembled the first three generations of the model line in its Saint Louis Assembly facility (Fenton, Missouri). The fourth and fifth-generation Town & Country were produced by Chrysler Canada by Windsor Assembly (Windsor, Ontario).

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When vehicle is exposed to consistent sunlight and heat during the spring/summer months, the driver's side power sliding door will not latch properly, causing the door to repeatedly try to latch itself shut. This occurs when opening/closing the door, and also while the vehicle is in motion. For example, if the door is shut properly, and the vehicle goes over a bump or something disrupts the ride, the door will think it is open, the warning light comes on the dashboard, the interior lights activate and the electric latch motor will repeatedly activate until the van thinks the door is closed. Even when parked, I have returned to the vehicle to find the door trying to close itself

2014 Chrysler Town and country recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2014 Chrysler Town and country.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling various Dodge, Chrysler, and RAM vehicles equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V824-0103.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
- Consequence: If the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury in the event of a fire.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners instructing them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began February 14, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or Kidde customer service service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information. Chrysler's number for this recall is T82.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles manufactured March 20, 2014, to April 22, 2014, and 2014 Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured March 21, 2014, to April 22, 2014. Due to a software error, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate, despite the the tire pressures being within specification. Should one of the tires lose air pressure, the driver would not be notified of the change in air pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."
- Consequence: If the TPMS light illuminates because the sensors cannot be located, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will reprogram the TPMS module, free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P63.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Chrysler Group, LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan vehicles manufactured August 25, 2010, through October 31, 2013. The affected vehicles may experience overheating of the vent window switch in the driver's door armrest.
- Consequence: An overheated switch may result in a vehicle fire.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the vent window switch with a newer version, free of charge. The owner notification letter was issued and the remedy campaign launched on on December 31, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P25.

I switched from the '13 to the '14 model for several reasons. The new model has added blind spot monitoring, heated seats, and a remote starter which is especially useful in harsh winters. I absolutely love this car! The first thing I noticed was that the steering is now more precise and firm. The rearview camera has also been improved, with much crisper images. In the '13 model, I had a big complaint about the late shift from 3rd to 4th gear and back while in stop and go traffic, which felt like a delayed acceleration. I drove several of these models and they all had the same issue. However, this is no longer the case with the '14 model. The engineers have made software adjustments and it now drives perfectly.

We couldn't have been happier with this mini-van!

The Chrysler Town and Country has proven to be a reliable and dependable vehicle overall. I own the Touring model, which comes with cloth/fabric seats, power sliding doors, a rear DVD player, and a roof rack. Apart from the usual wear and tear items such as tires, battery, and interior accessories like car charger covers, nothing major has been broken. Don't be fooled by the minivan stigma or negative connotations. This is a great minivan if you take care of it and service it. To be honest, I am not a gentle driver, as I typically mash on the gas pedal and often slam the brakes. Despite this, I sit through at least 3 plus hours of city traffic, including school pickups, long-distance highway driving, and rough bumper-to-bumper traffic, and this car handles well in almost all situations. The fuel economy for me has been averaging between 17 and 18mpg. However, there are a couple of things I want to point out. Do not buy this car if you intend on doing any towing or off-roading. This vehicle is mainly for city street and highway cruising. Towing is not great, especially since the tow rating is 3,000 lbs or less, and you risk damaging your transmission and other internal parts. A recent update: as of 5/15/2022, the alternator was damaged after 7 years, so I had to get that replaced for around $650 parts and labor. I also had a broken sun visor that my toddler managed to pull and damage, which happened on the way during a school run as she broke the sun visor mirror. I ordered a replacement sun visor for the passenger side from eBay from a wrecked 2011 Chrysler T&C, which is identical to mine, and I replaced the sun visor myself for less than $40 (with the help of a YouTube video) by replacing the screws, connecting the electrical wire, and finally connecting the final sun visor into its place. It was worth the hassle if you are a semi-DIY guy like myself. Finally, I wanted to share that my Chrysler has an estimated value of around $8k to $9k, which is not bad considering it is a base model (touring). I have friends who have tried to buy the new Pacifica's, which are now worth at least $40k to $50k. However, I prefer to stick with my Chrysler T&C as it is more reliable and parts are relatively cheap. I plan to keep this minivan until it hits 400k or 500k before considering any trade-in or selling options. Thank you for reading!

Only drawback is the quirky transmission. However, this is my 4th T&C, and they all have had tranny quirks. But I have 70k on this one without any repairs, just scheduled maintenance. In my opinion, this vehicle is the best value, even though the imports may be somewhat more refined.

This is an amazing vehicle! The electronic gadgets are so well engineered and there are too many to list. The stow and go seats are a game changer, allowing us to carry bicycles in the interior and providing huge capacity space. The interior is beautifully finished. While the gas consumption is only 'OK' for a vehicle of this size and weight, I haven't tried any long freeway drives yet. It could be even better to have an automatic parking brake rather than manually operated.

We have never encountered any issues until now. However, with only 65k miles on the car, we were disappointed to learn that the engine requires a $6k repair. It is concerning that this seems to be a widespread issue and yet Chrysler has not issued a recall. This experience has led us to the decision that this will be our final purchase from Chrysler.
Pierre Tillman 2024-05-29
Other than the external noise being very irritating, the driver's seat being terrible, and the transmission needing replacement at 66,000 miles, everything else is fine.

The Chrysler Town and Country has some drawbacks, but it can still be a good option for some buyers. While the key FOB may not be the most durable, the van does offer some great features. Some people choose to buy this vehicle because they are loyal to the Chrysler brand or because they want to support domestic jobs. Others may choose it because it offers similar features to more expensive vans at a lower price point. While it may not be the most comfortable van on the market, the front seats are adequate. The captains chairs in the second row may not be as comfortable as those in other minivans, but they do offer the convenience of Stow N Go. The third row may be a bit cramped, especially with rear-facing car seats, but it can still be a viable option for families on a budget.I can understand your frustration with the Town and Country. It seems like there are a few issues that make it uncomfortable for you and your passengers. The high windows and black seats and trim may contribute to the interior feeling like a cave. While the seat controls and adjustable steering wheel are appreciated, it's unfortunate that you still experience severe neck pain after long drives. It's important to feel comfortable and safe while driving, and it sounds like the Town and Country may not be the best fit for you. On the positive side, the vehicle seems to handle bumps relatively well and is relatively quiet on the road. However, the handling could be improved, and the transmission can be clunky with hard shifts. The fuel mileage is also disappointing, and it's important to be aware that the vehicle's information center may not be entirely accurate. Safety is a top priority, and while the Town and Country is generally safe, it's concerning that it failed the IIHS small overlap crash test. It's important to consider all factors when purchasing a vehicle, and it sounds like there may be better options available. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion and experience with the Town and Country.I understand that not everyone may share my opinion, but there may be other options that are worth considering.

This car may not be a performance vehicle and its handling may not be the best.

I purchased my car in August 2014 and unfortunately, I have had to bring it in for repairs quite a few times since then. I have had some issues with the power steering making noise and feeling strange, which took a few visits to the dealership to diagnose and fix. I have also had some trouble with the brakes, which have been slipping and not working properly since December 2014. Despite my efforts to get help from Chrysler's customer service department, I have not yet found a solution to these issues. I have had to deal with multiple representatives and escalation department representatives, but unfortunately, my problems have not been resolved. I have also experienced some issues with the engine running roughly and the starter lagging at times, which has been difficult to diagnose. While it has been frustrating to deal with these issues, I am hopeful that we can find a solution soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.I am currently concerned about my brakes as I have noticed some issues with them. Despite others telling me that there is nothing wrong with my car, my husband and other drivers who have used my car have also noticed the issue. Unfortunately, the feedback I have received from Chrysler and their dealerships has not been helpful. They have given me conflicting information about the state of my brakes and have even refused to cover the cost of replacing the rotors, even if they were faulty from the day I bought the car. I wanted to bring this to your attention and see if there is anything that can be done to resolve this issue. Thank you for your time.
