Chevrolet Corvette problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Corvette is a line of American two-door, two-seater sports cars, manufactured and marketed by General Motors, under the Chevrolet marque, since 1953.

Over the course of eight generations, indicated sequentially as C1 to C8, the Corvette is noted for its performance, distinctive styling, lightweight fiberglass or composite bodywork, and competitive pricing. Since the cessation of Ford and Chrysler's competitors, the Corvette is the only two-seat sports car produced by a major United States auto manufacturer and serves as Chevrolet's halo car.

Since its introduction in 1953, the two-seater has steadily moved upmarket. Originally a relatively modest, lightweight 6‑cylinder convertible, subsequent introductions of V8 engines, competitive chassis innovations, and rear mid-engined layout have positioned the Corvette in the supercar class. The first three Corvette generations (1953–1983) employed body-on-frame construction, and since the C4 generation, introduced in 1983 as an early 1984 model, Corvettes have used GM's unibody Y‑body platform. All Corvettes used front mid-engine configuration for seven generations, through 2019, and transitioned to a rear mid-engined layout with the C8 generation.

In 1953, GM executives accepted a suggestion by Myron Scott, then the assistant director of the Public Relations department, to name the company's new sports car after the corvette, a small maneuverable warship. The first model, a convertible, was introduced at the 1953 GM Motorama as a concept car; production models went on sale later that year. In 1963, the second generation was introduced in coupe and convertible styles. Originally manufactured in Flint, Michigan, and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette has been produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky, since 1981, which is also the location of the National Corvette Museum.

The Corvette has become widely known as "America's Sports Car." Automotive News wrote that after being featured in the early 1960s television show Route 66, "the Corvette became synonymous with freedom and adventure," ultimately becoming both "the most successful concept car in history and the most popular sports car in history."

Are Chevy Corvettes reliable?

In most cases, a Corvette is generally a dependable and high-quality car. While sports cars aren't commonly known for their reliability, Corvettes are an exception.

What is the downside of owning a Corvette?

Low ride: The iconic low ride of the Corvette can also be a con. When you hit bumps or curbs, it might do real damage to your vehicle, whereas something that rides a bit higher wouldn't even feel it.

What year was the bad Corvette?

Probably the worst year for the Corvette was the 1983 as none were released for production. Only a few test models were made and I believe only one remains. It is one of the cars that fell through the sink hole under the Corvette museum.

Are Corvettes high maintenance?

Find a Certified Mechanic. The Chevrolet Corvette Reliability Rating is 3.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 23rd out of 24 for midsize cars. The average annual repair cost is $737 which means it has average ownership costs.

I am concerned about the safety and possible failure of the brakes if it is not corrected. - The vehicle was purchased as CPO at Antwerpen Chevrolet dealership in Eldersburg, MD with 2155 miles on it. The Carfax noted the front brake rotor(s) were resurfaced. I questioned it and the dealership assured me they would take care of any issue I had with it. - I started experiencing the pulsating at 2550 miles. I went to the dealership and they were very helpful and ended up replacing the front rotors and pads. It appeared to be corrected. - At 3253 miles pulsation started again. Dealer replaced the rear rotors & pads & rechecked front rotors/pads. Ok for a while. - At 3897 miles it started again. Note: each time the dealership was able to duplicate the issue including the Service Mgr and the General Mgr. The front rotors were turned/pads checked. Ok for a while. - At 4037 miles it started again. Service Manager was able to duplicate. Through all of this, multiple cases have been opened with General Motors by myself and the dealership. It has been escalated to various levels. Mileage was put on the car as GM escalation process was ongoing. They then replaced the front rotors and disc pads. - At 5150 miles it started again. This is a serious safety problem as it is a constant concern how reliable the brakes will be. Full details are documented on the following pages with dates. • Summary: When driving, car will falsely and intermittently get random error codes on BUS module; resulting in a false FRUNK or Front Latch Service warning under Body Control Module code B1A5F or U164F for gateway. Chevy has found electrical connectors for car built in Nov/Dec 2023 which have plastic or bits inside the connectors making the electrical system have issues. However, even after addressing those faulty connectors they now think its also related to bad software. No resolution after 8 months of attempted repairs, and Chevy forums show other people with the BUS errors around same build time of end 2023. If you are driving car when these errors randomly pop in or out, the car will go into reduced power and speed limit of 25 MPH as it thinks the front trunk latch is open (when its closed). If on a highway, this can result in death or major accident. Multiple safety concerns go unaddressed by Chevy since early 2024 reports of issues.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-14
  • VIN: 1G1YF2D72E5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Earlier in the year I called GM about getting my Navigation updated. I ask when the next update would made current. I was told it would probably be in May. I decided to wait until then and it would be more accurate. When I called, they told me that GM had decided not to furnish a new update. I then tried to order one for last year and they could not update that either. I was willing to pay for it. With all the changes in highway's, it is dangerous to try to use it. They sold me the navigation and then made it obsolete. They did Bluetooth the radio but not the navigation. This is a safety hazard, and I feel the least they could do is charge me for the update and furnish it. It is still accurate except for new streets and there are a lot of changes. Help!

I really love the car, but this prevents me from using it at safely at night. Picture attached.

Chevrolet Corvette 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-02
  • VIN: 1G1YB2D76K5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: My 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the transmission system along with the torque converter began to malfunction as the car seemed to change from different modes. This malfunction caused the transmission to shudder, which caused a very bad vibration while accelerating and driving between the speed of 25-70mph. These actions or behaviors by the car surely poses a control and stability risks well as a safety risk for everyone on the highway and to myself. This issue was confirmed by the GM dealership I took the car to on 8/23/2024 and they said they could not get to it until 9/9/2024 and they will have to do a triple transmission fluid flush based on a service bulletin (TSB 18-NA-335) which was issued by General Motors. My car gave me no warning by way of lights or messages within the car. I would like to know why this repair is not covered under the service bulletin since General Motors knows this is a issue with the cars.

    Vehicle year: 2023

The transmission was replaced after only 1 year and 3k miles. However, I am confident in the car's ability to perform well in the future.

Just over 3k miles and my passenger window is stuck. This is pretty frustrating for any car, especially for a $50k or GM's 'flagship'. I called GM and they gave me two reasons: the car is man-made and it was a supplier error. While I understand that mistakes can happen, it's disappointing to experience this issue so early on. I hope GM can work with me to resolve this issue quickly.

It has come to our attention that some C7 Grand Sport and Z06 models may experience issues with their wheels bending or cracking during normal driving conditions, even at very low miles. Unfortunately, GM has not yet issued a recall or replacement under the bumper to bumper warranty, and instead is claiming that the damage is due to road conditions. While wheel warranties may cover cosmetic damage, they may not necessarily cover bent or cracked wheels. We understand that this can be frustrating for owners, who may have to spend an additional 3-4 thousand dollars on new wheels if the factory wheels crack or bend within the first few thousand miles. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and encourage you to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns.

I've owned six cars in the past two years. I tried the 09 370z, which was fun and fast, but ultimately not for me. Then I had a BMW335itturbo, but the engine failed after just a month. Next, I had a Porsche Boxster, which was a pure sports car. I loved the hidden mid-engine power and triptronic shift, but unfortunately, it needed a costly repair of $16,000 for a new transmission. I've always been a fan of the Corvette, and the C-5 was a really classy design, so I found one, tested it, and bought it. I haven't owned a Chevy since '88, as I've always stuck with Dodge and still have my Durango, which has great quality and service. However, I must say that Chevy has really stepped up their game. Their service is top-notch, and they are always honest and upfront with their customers. For example, if your mechanic doesn't know what 275/45/18 is, and you ask the service manager the same question, they will give you a clear and concise answer. Overall, I highly recommend Chevy to anyone in the market for a new car!

    Vehicle year: 2009

I recently took delivery of a 09 Atomic Orange convertible with 4LT, NPP, Z51, Auto, and Nav system on 22 September. I drove it back to Southern California and it was the most comfortable long-distance ride of any car I have ever owned. The 6-way power seats exceeded my expectations and were extremely comfortable. The car handled like a dream on winding mountain roads and I was pleasantly surprised by its acceleration. During the break-in period, I achieved better gas mileage than expected, averaging 26.6 MPG across city, mountain, and interstate driving. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this great automobile.

  2. Cordell Keebler 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 2000

Excellent sports car for the money. It's been the most fun sports car I've ever driven. I would definitely recommend it to all sports car enthusiasts. Although it's not a family car, everyone will enjoy riding in it.

  3. Leone Hegmann 2025-03-29

    Vehicle year: 1994

I recently purchased my dream car, a 94 vette, and I couldn't be happier! The C4 model is stunning, especially with the saw blade wheels. The best part is that these cars are very reasonably priced, with clean ones available for under 10k. It's definitely the best bang for your buck and it turns heads wherever you go. However, if you're considering a 6-speed manual, make sure to check if it still has the original flywheel. The dual mass flywheel tends to go bad and GM no longer makes it, so you'll have to buy a special one aftermarket. The Vette I purchased had an aftermarket aluminum flywheel, which caused some vibrations during acceleration. I replaced it with a new clutch and a heavier steel flywheel, and now it drives smoothly. Overall, I'm thrilled with my purchase and highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a great ride!

As someone who has driven a 911 for a long time, I decided to give the Corvette a try and I must say, it's a beautiful car both inside and out. It's fast and fun to drive, which makes it a great choice. Although I usually find American cars to have cheap interiors, I can see that there has been some improvement in this area. However, there is still room for further improvement. In terms of value for money, I believe that the Corvette is a great option. I could have gone back at least 2 years to buy a Porsche 911, which has a higher quality interior and finish, but I'm happy with my decision to buy the vette. I would rate it 3 1/2 stars and I'm glad to own a new '15 C7 instead of a '12 911 for the same price.

Congratulations on your new gift! Your father-in-law has given you a beautiful 2002 Pewter C5 'Base' with the AT. It's amazing that he drove it less than 2500 miles in the past six years. I understand your hesitation towards Corvettes, but this car is different. The ride is so comfortable that it can be used as a daily driver. The car is in remarkable condition with flawless paint and not a single ding in the body. The drivetrain is the most responsive of any vehicle you have ever owned, and the handling is very tight. Although there are a few minor rattles, it's expected for the age and mileage. I'm glad you're taking it to a friend who has done a lot of work on GM vehicles to fix the driver's side window. The Bose sound system is very good, even by today's standards. I appreciate you sharing the common problems with the driver's seat, but it's great that it's only going to cost you about $100 to fix. As far as maintenance costs go, it's important to note that everything is more expensive than the typical passenger car. However, in comparison to other cars in this class, it's a great value. Enjoy your new ride!Built-in cup holders are a bit scarce, but I have found one during the short time I have owned this car. I am planning on getting another portable one for the passenger. The electronics on this car are working flawlessly so far. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could order two keyless entry fobs on e-bay for only $25 for the pair, and it only took about 60 seconds to program them myself using the owner's manual. This was a great relief since many cars require you to go to a dealer to get fobs programmed and can charge you a substantial amount (more than $50) for such a simple task. Overall, this car is a great surprise and has a pretty good resale value. Low-mileage cars (less than 50K miles) go for over $20K, and some with the same mileage as mine and the same excellent condition and good Carfax are priced between $15K to $20K.
