In 1953, GM executives accepted a suggestion by Myron Scott, then the assistant director of the Public Relations department, to name the company's new sports car after the corvette, a small maneuverable warship. The first model, a convertible, was introduced at the 1953 GM Motorama as a concept car; production models went on sale later that year. In 1963, the second generation was introduced in coupe and convertible styles. Originally manufactured in Flint, Michigan, and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette has been produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky, since 1981, which is also the location of the National Corvette Museum.

The Corvette has become widely known as "America's Sports Car." And displays service abs and service traction control messages. This is a serious safety issue as when this happens, the abs brakes no longer work nor does the traction control. It blows my mind how this has never been recalled especially on a rear drive sports car.

Chevrolet issued a second recall but I never received a notification. the dealer indicated both recalls were closed and I had to pay $600+ to fix the problem. I contacted GM Customer Care for assistance but pretty much got the same feedback that the recall was closed and that there was no financial assistance they would provide, 100% of the cost would be my responsibility. I don't understand how a safety recall can be closed until it is repaired? I'm not sure why consumers have to pay for a design issue that has the potential of causing an accident due to the potential of the steering column locking up while driving! I had no choice but to direct the dealer to perform the repairs so I can drive the car with confidents it won't lockup in the future. Not expecting anything to happen as it seems these types of reported issues fall in favor of businesses and no longer the consumers. Just wanted to post this complaint out of frustration!

THE PROBLEM BEGINS WITH A MESSAGE "PULL KEY WAIT TEN SECONDS". AFTER THIS OCCURS A FEW TIMES THE "COLUMN LOCK" MESSAGE COMES ON AND THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN RIGHT ON THE SPOT. ALL 7 OF THE 8 VISITS HAVE RESULTED IN "BAND AID" FIXES. GM HAS NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM. IF YOU LOOK ON LINE YOU WILL SEE SOME TEMPORARY FIXES AND IDENTIFY THAT THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE. GM HAS APPARENTLY "WRITTEN OFF" THIS PROBLEM WHICH DATES BACK TO THE FIRST RECALL IN 1999. THIS ACTION CAN OCCUR WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY OR WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE VEHICLE WHEN YOU RELEASE THE CLUTCH. IMMEDIATELY UPON RELEASING THE CLUTCH THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF BECAUSE THE FUEL LINE IS SHUT DOWN. IT HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FIRST STARTED AS WELL. PERSONALLY I HAVE INCURRED TWO TOWING EXPENSES. MY CURRENT CHEVROLET DEALER HAS BEEN EXTREMELY UNDERSTANDING AND NOT CHARGED ME FOR "BAND AID" FIX. HOWEVER, THE LAST TIME HE INDICATED THAT THERE WILL NO MORE "GOODWILL" FIXES. MY CONCERN IS A FATAL ACCIDENT IF THE VEHICLE WAS TO STOP ON THE HIGHWAY OR WHILE MAKING A TURN OR ON A HIGHWAY. PLEASE HELP US OWNERS BY DEMANDING THAT GM FIX THIS PROBLEM.   • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK SYSTEMS (ECL), WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO "LOCK," THE ECL SYSTEM PREVENTS TURNING OF THE STEERING SYSTEM. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, THE ECL UNLOCKS THE STEERING SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED SO THAT IF THE COLUMN FAILS TO UNLOCK WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED AND THE CUSTOMER TRIES TO DRIVE, THE FUEL SUPPLY WILL BE SHUT OFF SO THAT THE VEHICLE CANNOT MOVE WHEN THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE STEERED. IF VOLTAGE AT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IS LOW OR INTERRUPTED, HOWEVER, THE FUEL SHUT OFF MAY NOT OCCUR AND THE VEHICLE CAN BE ACCELERATED WHILE THE STEERING SYSTEM IS LOCKED. ALSO WHEN THE CONTROL SYSTEM SHOWS THAT THE ECL IS UNLOCKED AND THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN, THE LOCK PIN LOCATION CAN VARY. DEPENDING ON THE LOCATION OF THE LOCK PLATE RELATIVE TO THE SWITCH TRANSITION POINT, THERE COULD THEN BE CONTACT BETWEEN THE LOCK PLATE AND PIN CAUSING THE STEERING TO LOCK WHILE DRIVING .
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING.
  • Remedy: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL DISABLE THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK BY REMOVING THE COLUMN LOCK PLATE. WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS REMOVED, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WILL LOCK BUT THE STEERING COLUMN WILL NOT LOCK. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL REPROGRAM THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, PERFORM A DIMENSIONAL CHECK OF THE COLUMN LOCK AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE LOCK PLATE. THE STEERING COLUMN ON THESE VEHICLES WILL CONTINUE TO LOCK WHEN THE KEY IS REMOVED. OWNER NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS OF 1997 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS BEGAN ON APRIL 26, 2004.     If you're considering purchasing or already own a Corvette, it's important to keep in mind that it can be quite expensive to maintain. I recently sold my 1999 Corvette because I was tired of constantly spending money on it. While it's certainly a head-turner and a blast to drive, the fact remains that it's not the most reliable car, especially considering it's a 'hand-made' vehicle. I took great care of my Corvette, keeping it in the garage and ensuring it was always in pristine condition. All scheduled maintenance was performed on time, but unfortunately, I still encountered some issues. Perhaps I just got unlucky with a lemon. My Corvette had only 25,500 miles on it when I sold it, and I had to replace the bald Goodyear tires with Michelins for $1350, fix a bad window motor for $600, repair the fuel gauge for $979, and install a new gas tank for $715.

    The car has been great! The ride quality is amazing for how well the car handles corners. The seats couldn't be more comfortable on both long and short trips, and there's plenty of cargo room for two people traveling. Plus, it gets better than 30mpg on the highway!

    I recently purchased this car used, and it's in immaculate condition. I have all the records for everything that has been done to the car. Although it has had some electrical problems, such as the fuel gauge, stereo, and power window motors, just sitting in the car and firing it up puts a smile on my face. The performance is amazing, and the ride comfort is surprisingly good. During my drive from Texas to VA, I averaged well over 30 mpg. There is also ample storage in the back for pretty much anything you need to carry, such as luggage or groceries. In my opinion, the C5 Corvette is by far the best bang for the buck vehicle out there. My only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner.

    This is one of the most enjoyable and finest cars I have ever owned, even surpassing Cadillacs, Mercedes, and others. I drive it daily, except on big snow days when I use my 4WD Suburban. The car's power and handling are obviously its strong points, but I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable and refined it is to drive. On trips, I get over 30 mpg and arrive feeling relaxed.

    Hi there! I must say, I'm impressed with your 30-year experience driving a Shelby GT500. Your standards are high, and it's great to hear that the C5 has met them so readily. It's even better to know that it keeps getting better! I'm glad to hear that the car fits you well, and that the Active Handling is fabulous. The sound system is great too, and I'm sure it's a treat to look at. It's amazing that you get an average of 24 MPG, and a highway of 30 MPG at 70 MPH! That's really impressive. While the Z06 of a couple of years later is more powerful, I can understand why you prefer the fastback look, and it's great that you can mostly have a convertible when you want. It's amazing that this car is great value for money - less than a Civic Hybrid, and the MPG is great for a 13.5 second quarter miler with a top speed north of 170.     I purchased my mint condition 99 hardtop last year and I couldn't be happier. It's been a reliable and fun Sunday car that turns heads and is a pleasure to drive. I'm impressed with the mileage I get, averaging 20 mpg driving in a mix of city and highway driving. Although the interior could've been a bit more refined, the car makes up for it in performance and style.
