2001 Chevrolet Corvette problems
The Chevrolet Corvette is a line of American two-door, two-seater sports cars, manufactured and marketed by General Motors, under the Chevrolet marque, since 1953.
Over the course of eight generations, indicated sequentially as C1 to C8, the Corvette is noted for its performance, distinctive styling, lightweight fiberglass or composite bodywork, and competitive pricing. Since the cessation of Ford and Chrysler's competitors, the Corvette is the only two-seat sports car produced by a major United States auto manufacturer and serves as Chevrolet's halo car.
Since its introduction in 1953, the two-seater has steadily moved upmarket. Originally a relatively modest, lightweight 6‑cylinder convertible, subsequent introductions of V8 engines, competitive chassis innovations, and rear mid-engined layout have positioned the Corvette in the supercar class. The first three Corvette generations (1953–1983) employed body-on-frame construction, and since the C4 generation, introduced in 1983 as an early 1984 model, Corvettes have used GM's unibody Y‑body platform. All Corvettes used front mid-engine configuration for seven generations, through 2019, and transitioned to a rear mid-engined layout with the C8 generation.
In 1953, GM executives accepted a suggestion by Myron Scott, then the assistant director of the Public Relations department, to name the company's new sports car after the corvette, a small maneuverable warship. The first model, a convertible, was introduced at the 1953 GM Motorama as a concept car; production models went on sale later that year. In 1963, the second generation was introduced in coupe and convertible styles. Originally manufactured in Flint, Michigan, and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette has been produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky, since 1981, which is also the location of the National Corvette Museum.
The Corvette has become widely known as "America's Sports Car." Automotive News wrote that after being featured in the early 1960s television show Route 66, "the Corvette became synonymous with freedom and adventure," ultimately becoming both "the most successful concept car in history and the most popular sports car in history."

Common 2001 Chevrolet Corvette problems
The Chevrolet Corvette C5, produced from 1997 to 2004, is a popular sports car with a range of issues reported by owners. The 2001 model year, in particular, has been associated with several problems.
One common issue with the 2001 Corvette C5 is related to the steering column lock, which can defy the driver at will. This problem can be addressed by replacing the locking plate with a different one provided by a dealership or by using a kit, but these solutions are not 100-percent effective. It is recommended to take the car to a dealership or an experienced Corvette mechanic for resolution.
Another issue reported by 2001 Corvette C5 owners is excessive oil consumption caused by piston ring instability at higher RPMs. This problem does not appear to cause any long-term damage to the engine, but it is recommended to keep an eye on the oil level. The PCV system may also contribute to excessive oil consumption, but it does not seem to cause any problems according to some C5 owners.
The 2001 Corvette C5 is also known for its electrical system issues, which can affect various systems including traction control. Grounding wires can become corroded, especially behind the headlights, and fixing these issues may require disassembling and thoroughly cleaning the ground connectors.
A leaking differential can cause detrimental issues and may render the car undrivable. To prevent this problem, it is recommended to use a solvent to make a proper seal between the carrier lip and the differential cover.
Valvetrain noises in the LS1 engine can be caused by needle bearings in the rockers failing, which can lead to bearings falling out and sticking to the oil drain plug. The best solution to this problem is to have a reputable shop rebuild the rockers with upgraded bearings or to buy a set of bearings that are already upgraded.
In summary, the 2001 Chevrolet Corvette C5 has several common problems, including issues with the steering column lock, excessive oil consumption, electrical system issues, leaking differentials, and valvetrain noises. It is recommended to take the car to a dealership or an experienced Corvette mechanic for resolution of these issues.
What are the problems with the 2001 Corvette?
Many late 2000 and 2001 C5 Corvette are known to burn an excessive amount of oil when the engine RPM's are kept over 4,000 during prolonged periods of operation. This is most commonly caused by ring flutter, which allows extra oil to seep past the oil control rings.

Do C5 Corvettes have problems?
Many C5's came with AC Delco Freedom batteries that tend to have the case crack near the battery posts. The leaking battery acid would drip down the side of the battery, down the funnel-like battery support, straight down onto the PCM and the wiring loom.

STEERING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-02-14
- VIN: 1G1YY12S915
- Components: STEERING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Chevy / GM recalled over 100,000 Corvettes built between 1997 and 2004 for a steering column lock issue, that renders the car un drivable. The fuel supply cuts off at 2 miles per hour. Many of the dealers did a faulty job fixing the problem, causing it to recur. My 2001 Corvette (with less than 17,000 miles) repeatedly experiences this problem. GM says they will not warrant this known defective design, due to the recall expiring. According to an internet search on “Corvette Steering Column Lock”, there no telling how many unhappy Corvette owners this has created. Need your help getting this $50,000 car back on the road.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-18
- VIN: 1G1YY22G515
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: We purchased the car on 12/17/21. I went to Costco on 12/18/21 to get gas. I had a preset amount of $50 to put into the car. When I got to $50 I shut the pump off myself, the tank was not full enough for it to shut off automatically. As I look down on the ground I saw a fluid running out from underneath the car and rolling along the ground. I touched it with my finger and discovered it was gasoline. I put the nozzle back into the holder and I checked underneath the car and saw it was dripping from the drivers side in the area just behind the drivers door. I pulled the car over to the side to inspect it further. By now the gas had stopped dripping. Since the exhaust pipe is right next to the fuel tank I was afraid of a fire or explosion. Had some fuel vapors but they dissipated shortly after. My gas gauge was registering full at this time. Since then I have not had any gasoline leaks and or vapors present. I have not put any more gas in the car since then. (I contacted the previous owner and he said in an email response, if you overfill there is a vent hole that gas will leak out of at the top of the filler neck. It happened once when I put like 20 gallons in it.) I did some research and found that there is a problem with the Corvette gas tanks and or the crossover tube. I think this is a dangerous situation, thinking that if that gas ignited, the car and my passenger could have caught fire and possibly ignited the Costco gas station with an explosion. (This car will be going into the repair shop in January to have a diagnostic smoke test done to determine where the leak and or leaks are coming from.) I hope the NHTSA recognizes this as a very dangerous situation. All of this will be coming out of my own pocket for the repairs necessary to make this car safe to drive and not be dangerous to myself and family. I consider this a very serious dangerous situation.

THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT GM HAD PERFORMED RECALLS 04006B AND NO. 04006C ON THIS VEHICLE SEVERAL YEARS AGO TO ADDRESS THE COLUMN LOCK ISSUE AND THAT RECALL INCLUDED REPROGRAMMING THE PCM TO SHUT OFF THE FUEL AT 2MPH - THIS VEHICLE WILL RUN INDEFINITELY SO LONG AS IT ISN'T PUT IN GEAR AND DRIVEN OVER 2MPH. THE CHEVROLET DEALER INDICATED THAT THIS SAFETY ISSUE ISN'T THEIR CONCERN AND THAT GM EXPECTS IT'S CUSTOMERS TO COVER THE COST - I PHONED GM'S RECALL DEPARTMENT AND TOLD THEM THE SAFETY ISSUE IS RECURRING AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THEY EXPECT THEIR CUSTOMERS TO COVER THE COST OF THIS SAFETY DEFECT. I ALSO TOLD GM THAT I INTENDED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE NHTSA AND BBB IF THEY DIDN'T PROPERLY ADDRESS THIS SAFETY ISSUE AND THEY ENCOURAGED ME TO FILE THOSE COMPLAINTS. BUYER BEWARE

- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK SYSTEMS (ECL), WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO "LOCK," THE ECL SYSTEM PREVENTS TURNING OF THE STEERING SYSTEM. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED, THE ECL UNLOCKS THE STEERING SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED SO THAT IF THE COLUMN FAILS TO UNLOCK WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED AND THE CUSTOMER TRIES TO DRIVE, THE FUEL SUPPLY WILL BE SHUT OFF SO THAT THE VEHICLE CANNOT MOVE WHEN THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE STEERED. IF VOLTAGE AT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IS LOW OR INTERRUPTED, HOWEVER, THE FUEL SHUT OFF MAY NOT OCCUR AND THE VEHICLE CAN BE ACCELERATED WHILE THE STEERING SYSTEM IS LOCKED. ALSO WHEN THE CONTROL SYSTEM SHOWS THAT THE ECL IS UNLOCKED AND THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN, THE LOCK PIN LOCATION CAN VARY. DEPENDING ON THE LOCATION OF THE LOCK PLATE RELATIVE TO THE SWITCH TRANSITION POINT, THERE COULD THEN BE CONTACT BETWEEN THE LOCK PLATE AND PIN CAUSING THE STEERING TO LOCK WHILE DRIVING .
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL DISABLE THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK BY REMOVING THE COLUMN LOCK PLATE. WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS REMOVED, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WILL LOCK BUT THE STEERING COLUMN WILL NOT LOCK. ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, THE DEALER WILL REPROGRAM THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE, PERFORM A DIMENSIONAL CHECK OF THE COLUMN LOCK AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE LOCK PLATE. THE STEERING COLUMN ON THESE VEHICLES WILL CONTINUE TO LOCK WHEN THE KEY IS REMOVED. OWNER NOTIFICATION TO OWNERS OF 1997 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS BEGAN ON APRIL 26, 2004. OWNERS OF 1998 THROUGH 2004 VEHICLES (EXCEPT 1997-1998 MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES) WILL BE NOTIFIED BEGINNING ON AUGUST 2, 2004. THE REMAINING OWNERS (1997-1998 MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES) WILL BE NOTIFIED LATER IN 2004, WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.

Great acceleration! Although, it's worth noting that the handling can be a bit tricky in cold and wet weather. Overall, it's a really fun car to drive.
-
You've found the best value for a high-performance production vehicle!
-
I purchased the car brand new with only 3 miles on it. I ordered it in October 2000 and took ownership in January 2001. To ensure the car was in top condition, I had the dealer change the oil and top off/replace the rear-end fluid. The oil change was free of charge, and the rear-end fluid cost me around $100. After driving 3200 miles, I didn't check the oil until I changed it myself at 7000 miles using Havoline's synthetic formula 3. I added the recommended 6.5 quarts of oil. Unfortunately, the low oil light came on at 8900 miles, and I discovered that the oil level was a quart low.

I broke this car in with extreme care. In my 10 months of ownership, I have never spun the tires or exceeded the speed limit by more than 5 mph. Nevertheless, I have never owned a more enjoyable outright fun automobile. On my last tank, I went 333 miles and averaged 32.43 mpg. It's an economy car with 385 hp! This car is easily worth the 50 grand I paid! I feel ten years younger, and my business trips are a pleasure!

I drove my 2001 car for a year and recently upgraded to a 2003 model. Although the 01 had some issues with burning oil, it was all sorted out by the General and ran smoothly afterwards. I didn't face many challenges at red lights, except for some little souped-up Civics. In my opinion, this car is the best value for money. It has tons of torque and plenty of power. However, I would recommend this car only to those who are confident in their driving skills, as it deserves to be driven hard, quick, and aggressively.

During the first two years of owning the car, I experienced a lot of issues with the check engine light constantly coming on. I tried to resolve the issue with GM, but unfortunately, all they could offer me was oil changes. Eventually, I decided to contact the Better Business Bureau for assistance. Within a week, I was making progress with the problems. Since I was leasing the car and wanted a dependable vehicle, I was relieved to learn that in the State of Nevada, there is a lemon law that allows for three strikes before the car is considered history or a compromise. Finally, GM settled with a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. I am grateful to the Better Business Bureau for their help. Although owning the car was fun, the aggravation it put me through wasn't worth buying another GM product. I am now considering European models.

I have experienced significant oil burn issues with my new car, with a consumption rate of 1 quart every 1000 miles. Despite my attempts to seek assistance from Chevrolet customer service, I have been disappointed with their lack of concern and unwillingness to address the issue. The car has also required replacement of the clutch assembly and shifter, and has experienced significant vibrations. However, I remain confident in my assessment of the situation and will continue to pursue a resolution.

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about the 2001 Corvettes. Unfortunately, some of them were manufactured with defective piston rings, which can cause the engines to use excessive amounts of oil - sometimes up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles. So, if you're in the market for a Corvette, you might want to steer clear of the 2001 model. Hope this helps!
