2018 Chevrolet Corvette problems

The Chevrolet Corvette is a line of American two-door, two-seater sports cars, manufactured and marketed by General Motors, under the Chevrolet marque, since 1953.

Over the course of eight generations, indicated sequentially as C1 to C8, the Corvette is noted for its performance, distinctive styling, lightweight fiberglass or composite bodywork, and competitive pricing. Since the cessation of Ford and Chrysler's competitors, the Corvette is the only two-seat sports car produced by a major United States auto manufacturer and serves as Chevrolet's halo car.

Since its introduction in 1953, the two-seater has steadily moved upmarket. Originally a relatively modest, lightweight 6‑cylinder convertible, subsequent introductions of V8 engines, competitive chassis innovations, and rear mid-engined layout have positioned the Corvette in the supercar class. The first three Corvette generations (1953–1983) employed body-on-frame construction, and since the C4 generation, introduced in 1983 as an early 1984 model, Corvettes have used GM's unibody Y‑body platform. All Corvettes used front mid-engine configuration for seven generations, through 2019, and transitioned to a rear mid-engined layout with the C8 generation.

In 1953, GM executives accepted a suggestion by Myron Scott, then the assistant director of the Public Relations department, to name the company's new sports car after the corvette, a small maneuverable warship. The first model, a convertible, was introduced at the 1953 GM Motorama as a concept car; production models went on sale later that year. In 1963, the second generation was introduced in coupe and convertible styles. Originally manufactured in Flint, Michigan, and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette has been produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky, since 1981, which is also the location of the National Corvette Museum.

The Corvette has become widely known as "America's Sports Car." Automotive News wrote that after being featured in the early 1960s television show Route 66, "the Corvette became synonymous with freedom and adventure," ultimately becoming both "the most successful concept car in history and the most popular sports car in history."

What year is the most dependable Corvette?

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-31
  • VIN: 1G1YV2D72J5
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Inside lip of rear wheel cracked and wheel bent beyond repair, per wheel repair company. OEM make and model tire was in place and no noticeable impact was felt to cause this failure. WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-15
  • VIN: 1G1YY2D71J5
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Purchased the vehicle February 2018. In September 2019, I replaced the tires and within a few days, I started losing air pressure. Both rear wheels cracked. I tried to get GM to honor the 36 month bumper to bumper warranty but they refused. I purchased replacement wheels at my own expense. In June 2022, after 9000 miles, the car started driving rough so I brought it to the dealership. Both the driver side wheels, front and back, are bent.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-13
  • VIN: 1G1YY2D74J5
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Prior to warranty expiration I took my car to be checked for vibration at highway speed. McMulkin Chevrolet NH told me they had to change the fluid in the transmission. This did nothing for the problem. During this time the drivers side tires would lose tire pressure faster than what is acceptable. At no time did the dealer mention the wheel cracking and warping problem experienced by this model vehicle. A year later I am experiencing excessive air leakage on three wheels. Upon further inspection I have found that the three tires have stress cracks. If I had known about the wheel defect I would have taken action sooner. I find this to be a dangerous safety related policy by GM to not alert the owners of these vehicles to the widespread problem.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-03
  • VIN: 1g1yx2d77j5
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Failure was the right rear wheel cracked in two places causing tire to go flat on highway . A flat tire could cause the vehicle to go out of control in traffic resultion in a serious accident causing injury or death Dealer Bob Huff Chevolet of Wrythville Va diagnosed and confirmed the problem and initially Walmart tire and service attempted to diagnose and fix the tire thinking a nail had beenj picked up causing a air leak but discovered the cracked wheel in two places causing air loss wrs . A new wheel was ordered by Bob Huff Chevy and installed by them. GM is well aware of the cracked wheels and refuse to do anything about it calling the bad wheels a result of road hazards and potholes etc. When the tire loses air the low tire warning light comes on and more air must be installed but as i was stranded on Easter Saturday and Sunday waiting too order a new wheel making it impossible to travel as i could only get about 25 miles after putting additional air in the tire.

  • Summary: I PURCHASED MY 20018 CORVETTE Z06 IN DECEMBER OF 2020 AND BECAUSE THIS WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE VEHICLE I ALSO PURCHASED AN EXTENDED 6 YEAR BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. I DROVE CAR OFF THE LOT AND DROVE IT FOR A VERY BRIEF PERIOD OF TIME AND DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS A SLOW LEAK IN THE DRIVER REAR TIRE AND TOOK IT TO BE REPAID AND THE DISCOUNT TIRE COMPANY SAID THAT IT WAS CRACKED WITH A FAILING REPAIR. I THEN LOOKED TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TO REPORT THIS UNSAFE SITUATION AND THEY INFORMED THEY COULDN'T COVER UNDER ANY OF MY WARRANTIES AND THAT IT WAS A MANUFACTURER ISSUE NOT THEIRS I ALSO TOOK OFF ALL 4 WHEELS TO SEE IF OTHERS WERE CRACKED AND 1 ADDITIONAL FRONT PASSENGER TIRE WAS CRACKED AND REPAIRED SO I HAVE 2 THAT ARE UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON. I ALSO CONTACTED CHEVROLET CONSUMER AFFAIRS WHO AFTER A MONTH FINALLY GOT BACK TO ME TO SAY THAT IT IS THE ROADS NOT THE WHEELS SO THEY ARE NOT COVERING THIS ISSUE UNLESS AND UNTIL A LAWSUIT IS SUCCESSFUL IN CREATING A RECALL CAMPAIGN. WITH THAT SAID AM LOOKING TO JOIN A LAWSUIT BECAUSE I HAVE AN UNSAFE VEHICLE TO DRIVE WITH THAT GM KNOWINGLY IS CONTINUING TO DENY AND SOMEONE MAY LOSE THEIR LIFE BY CRASHING AFTER A BLOWOUT THAT MOST LIKELY COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY GM STEPPING UP AND TAKING ACCOUNTABILITY FOR SELLING US FAULTY CAST WHEELS.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-04-29
  • VIN: 1G1YX2D70J5
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I HAVE OWNED THE CAR SINCE NEW WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED IN THE SPRING OF 2019. SINCE THIS TIME, I HAVE DRIVEN THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 11000 ISSUE FREE MILES. AS OF 2 WEEKS AGO, I HAD ALL FOUR TIRES REPLACED AT A CHEVY DEALERSHIP. A FEW DAYS AFTER, I NOTED THAT THERE WAS A SLOW TIRE PRESSURE LEAK IN THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE. UPON TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TODAY TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THERE WERE 2 LARGE CRACKS IN THAT WHEEL, CAUSING THE LEAK. BECAUSE OF THIS, WE INSPECTED THE REMAINING 3 WHEELS TO FIND THAT THE OTHER REAR WHEEL ALSO HAD A CRACK. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY IMPACT TO THE WHEELS (POTHOLES, DEBRIS IMPACT, ETC.), THAT WOULD HAVE EVER INDICATED TO ME TO CHECK FOR DAMAGE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A WORKMANSHIP ISSUE FROM CHEVROLET THAT COULD HAVE SEVERE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS IF IT WERE TO TAIL CATASTROPHICALLY AT SPEED.

  • VIN: 1G1YX2D72J5
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE FROM KENTUCKY TO FLORIDA THE FOLLOWING DAY I RECIEVED AN ALERT ON MY PHONE SAYING MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS FLAT. AFTER EXAMINING THE TIRE AND WHEEL I DISCOVERED A SIGNIFICANT CRACK ON THE INBOARD SIDE OF THE RIM. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DALE EARNHARDT JR CHEVROLET IN TALLAHASSEE FL. AFTER INSPECTING THE WHEEL THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE DAMAGE AS A DEFECTIVE WHEEL. I'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE ALMOST 2 YEARS AND HAS 15,000 MILES. THIS WILL BE THE 2ND WHEEL THAT HAS CRACKED AND AND 3 THAT HAS BENT. GM REFUSED TO COVER ANY OF THEM. THE FIRST WHEEL BENT WITHIN 500 MILES OF PURCHASE, THE DEALER BOUGHT THAT REPLACEMENT WHEEL. I PURCHASED AN EXTRA WHEEL AND TIRE WARRANTY AFTER THAT AND THEY PAID FOR 2 BENT AND I CRACKED WHEEL. I BELIEVE THEY TOO NOW KNOW THESE Z06/GRAND SPORT WHEELS ARE DEFECTIVE AND ARE REFUSING TO PAY FOR THIS CURRENTLY CRACKED WHEEL. THIS RIM WAS CRACKED DURING MY DRIVE FROM KENTUCKY TO FLORIDA CAUSING THE FLAT TIRE. ONE DAY THIS ISSUE IS GOING TO CAUSE SOMEONE TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT AND GM WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

  • Summary: REAR OEM WHEELS OF HAVE LIP CRACKS AND CHEVROLET WILL NOT HONOR NEW RIMS UNDER THE FULL FACTORY WARRANTY. THEY HAVE STATED THAT THE RIMS HAVE DEVELOPED CRACKS FROM HITTING POT HOLES. THIS IS NOT CORRECT BECAUSE I HAVE NOT HIT ANY "POTHOLES" OR ANY OTHER ROAD IMPERFECTIONS THAT WOULD CAUSE ALL OF THESE LIP CRACKS. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE WHEELS THAT ARE ON THE GRAND SPORT MODEL. THREE DEALERSHIPS HAVE TOLD ME THAT I NEED TO BUY NEW RIMS AT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. I PAID $55,000 FOR A CAR THAT SHOULD NOT NEED NEW RIMS. THE ISSUE IS THAT IF I BUY NEW OEM RIMS, MANY OTHER CORVETTE OWNERS HAVE DONE THIS AND THE SAME CRACKS APPEAR ON THE NEW REPLACEMENT WHEELS. THIS IS JUST WRONG AND CHEVROLET KNOWS THEY HAVE A PROBLEM YET FAIL TO TAKE OWNERSHIP. VERY DISAPPOINTING AND FRUSTRATING TO SAY THE LEAST. BOTH WHEELS LOST AIR PRESSURE AND ONE WENT COMPLETELY FLAT. VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE OF DEFECTIVE WHEELS ARE EXPRESSWAY SPEEDS. I WENT TO MANY SHOPS TO GET THEM REPAIRED AND NO-ONE WILL EVEN TOUCH THEM!

Negative 2018 Chevrolet Corvette car reviews

  1. Zane Kautzer 2025-02-25

It has come to our attention that some C7 Grand Sport and Z06 models may experience issues with their wheels bending or cracking during normal driving conditions, even at very low miles. Unfortunately, GM has not yet issued a recall or replacement under the bumper to bumper warranty, and instead is claiming that the damage is due to road conditions. While wheel warranties may cover cosmetic damage, they may not necessarily cover bent or cracked wheels. We understand that this can be frustrating for owners, who may have to spend an additional 3-4 thousand dollars on new wheels if the factory wheels crack or bend within the first few thousand miles. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and encourage you to contact us if you have any further questions or concerns.

This is my 10th Corvette, and I have owned a range of models from T tops, Targa Tops, Convertibles, Autos, Manuals, and 1 ZR1. When I purchased my 2018 Z51 3LT Stingray Coupe in January 2019, the Dealerships Internet Department failed to disclose the GM Service Bulletin regarding WHEEL HOP, which only included 2014 to 2017 Stingrays. When I experienced SEVERE WHEEL HOPPING at parking lot speeds, in HARD RIGHT OR LEFT TURNS, I was concerned. However, the dealership printed the aforementioned GM BULLETIN, which stated that it was NORMAL. Despite starting a LEMON LAW with GM, I was told that it was NORMAL. I even contacted an Attorney, but his EXPERT said he would not go to court because GM SAYS, ITS NORMAL. Unfortunately, the Dealership I purchased the car from was of no help. As a Corvette Enthusiast, I am disappointed with my experience. However, I remain confident in the quality of the Corvette brand. It is worth noting that the value of my car has decreased by almost $20K in only 5 MONTHS, from $63K to $45K.

It's great to see so many overseas competitors excelling in technology and overall drive when it comes to vehicles in this price range. However, we are confident that we can keep up with the competition and continue to provide high-quality vehicles to our customers.

  4. Keyshawn Grant 2024-07-06

This car has great performance, but unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the wheels being out of balance and the front end not being aligned properly when I bought it new. The steering wheel was also crooked. I have owned several Toyotas and Hondas and have never experienced these issues. Additionally, the seat backs were loose in the hinges, even after being replaced. Despite these setbacks, the car still has impressive performance. However, I did experience some frustration with the 8-speed auto transmission, which seems to be a common issue according to online forums. Unfortunately, the dealer and GM were unable or unwilling to fix it. Overall, my experience with this car was not as positive as I had hoped. I have since decided to part ways with it. By the way, I noticed that all the entries on the model drop-down menu are listed as '7M', even though this is an automatic.

Positive 2018 Chevrolet Corvette car reviews

  1. Barton Lynch 2025-03-26

This is the only high performance car under 150k that I had not owned before. I made the buying decision based on the sleek lines, and I must say, this is a bad boy car that looks so good! The comfort is great, and although there is some road noise, it is easily covered by the loud engine. The instruments are easy to operate, and even though it is a low slung car, you get all that goes with it. The trunk is spacious enough to hold a spinning wheel, although I haven't tried luggage yet. I usually drive in economy mode, which gives me a gas mileage of around 22-ish, but if I hot rod, then it drops considerably. I drive pretty conservatively unless I need to show off. The front camera is a great option to avoid hitting curbs, but I do wish it had lane change assist. I understand that it is not a car for everyone, but I can't help but smile when I see it and love the way I feel driving it. It is one of those cars that give you a thrill driving.

  2. Angus Bins 2025-03-17

I've had my white Grand Sport convertible with 8-speed auto transmission for eight months now and I still absolutely love it. I've put 9,300 miles on it; the first 2,000 were a very careful break-in, then 7,000 miles of grand touring driving: from Austin, Texas to Key West, Florida and back by way of the southern Appalachian mountains, then a quick trip from Austin to Denver and back. Plus some 'spirited' driving on the back roads around Austin. You definitely will want a good radar + laser detector, plus Waze on your smart device if you drive this machine! And after those eight months, I am still head-over-heels in love with my baby (I named it 1 G lateral force when cornering on street tires (but they are miles ahead of previous generation Corvette seats, and actually do provide some lateral support!); 5) If you value privacy, you might get tired of people complimenting you when stopped at traffic lights! :) Other than that, there's really very little that I find annoying about this wonderful machine. Highly recommended if you are in the market for a two-seater touring/racing/sports car. And I haven't even mentioned things like the dry-sump lubrication (keeps the engine oiled during hard cornering/accel/braking), magnetic shock absorbers (monitors road conditions and adjusts the ride 180 times a second for road/driving conditions), and phenomenal braking ability (70-0 in 136 feet on stock tires!). I also want to mention the vastly-improved cabin appointments, with heated/ventilated seats, passenger climate controls on the passenger vent, heads-up instrumentation, etc. etc. Oh, and this website does not seem to allow line breaks, so sorry for the one big run-on paragraph. Best regards, Delta Foxtrot, Austin, Texas.

I've owned my first Corvette for six months now, and I have to say, I was a bit hesitant at first about purchasing one. But boy, was I wrong! Even though it's American made, the quality of the car is top-notch, and it feels very well-built. So far, I've found almost nothing to complain about with this vehicle. The stock exhaust note is great because it isn't insanely loud, but it's definitely loud enough, and the acceleration is mind-boggling. I have yet to come even close to pushing this car to the limit, and in all honesty, I don't think I ever will. It's surprisingly comfortable as well, and if you put it into touring mode, the suspension becomes very soft and supple, which is something I never would have expected. If there is one thing that I can complain about, it would have to be the traction, which seems almost impossible to get any time you hit the gas pedal even a little bit. It isn't necessarily touchy, but you have to be very cautious and aware that the backend will get loose very quickly. Another thing that I love about my Z06 is the exterior styling. The car is very sexy and sleek, and if it weren't for the Corvette badge on the front, I could easily mistake it for a Ferrari. Overall, I am head over heels in love with my Z06 and would definitely recommend it to anyone in the market looking for supercar performance at an unbeatable price.

I owned the 2016 Corvette Z-51 before purchasing this one exactly one year later. This model has significantly more power than the previous one. Although the regular model already has ample power for street use, it would make an excellent everyday driver. However, with the added power of the Z-51, the cost of replacing tires would be a concern as they only last for about 15k miles. If you're looking for the ultimate affordable car, the Z06 is definitely worth considering. The speed it can achieve is truly impressive and the thrill it provides is unmatched. I personally have the A8 transmission and find it to be more than sufficient for my needs. While some may prefer the 7-speed manual, I find it impossible to shift that quickly. In fact, the automatic transmission is faster from 0-60mph by a few tenths of a second.

So far, I haven't found any cons. As expected, the car has great acceleration, handling, and braking. The electronics are good, although it's missing a lane change warning, which is pretty much standard on most new vehicles. The front camera (2lt) is a great feature that helps to avoid pulling in too close to a curb with its very long and low front end. The different driving modes are a lot of fun. I was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional gas mileage in touring and eco mode. Overall, this is a true American sports car that is well worth the price.
