Nissan Sentra problems

The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common Nissan Sentra problems
Nissan Sentra owners have reported several common problems with their vehicles, including transmission issues, brake problems, unusual noises while driving, bad paint and trim, suspension problems, and steering issues.
Transmission issues are among the most common and serious problems that can happen to a Nissan Sentra. In particular, some Sentras, especially the 2019 and 2012-2016 models, have experienced transmission problems. Many owners of these models have reported that the car's continuously variable transmission (CVT) can cause temporary loss of power and total failure. These problems can leave owners with crippled vehicles and large repair bills. The CVT problems are so widespread that there have been class action lawsuits filed against Nissan.
Brake problems are also a recurring issue for Nissan Sentra owners. For example, many 2013 Sentra owners have reported that the brakes don't engage after stepping on the brake pedal until it hits the floor. In some cases, this problem is caused by a master brake cylinder that failed prematurely. Replacing the bad cylinder will resolve the issue. Even the relatively new 2020 Nissan Sentra isn't immune to brake problems. Some units have anti-braking lock systems that can stop working without warning. When the ABS gives out while the car is on a slippery road surface, the driver can potentially lose control and end up in an accident.
Unusual noises while driving are another common problem for Nissan Sentra owners. For example, drivers of some units of the 2016 Nissan Sentra report hearing loud howling or screeching noises during windy days and when driving at high speeds. While some owners suspect it's loose weatherstripping, others have had no luck determining where the sounds are coming from. The car could also vibrate enough to make noticeable noise at highway speeds.
Bad paint and trim are also common problems for Nissan Sentra owners. Many vehicles belonging to the Sentra’s 2016 model year, in particular, have experienced body and paint problems. The paint and clear coat on the affected vehicles’ bodies may fade early or flake off. Chrome trims could also develop rust, while moldings and trims may become loose and eventually fall off.
Suspension problems and steering issues are also common complaints among Nissan Sentra owners. For example, some owners have reported that their vehicles have a rough or slow acceleration, which can be caused by suspension problems. Lackluster technology is another common problem, especially with the collision avoidance technology.
In summary, Nissan Sentra owners have reported several common problems with their vehicles, including transmission issues, brake problems, unusual noises while driving, bad paint and trim, suspension problems, and steering issues. These problems can lead to crippled vehicles and large repair bills, and in some cases, can even be dangerous.
Are Nissan Sentra reliable cars?
The Nissan Sentra Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 14th out of 36 for compact cars. The average annual repair cost is $491 which means it has lower than average ownership costs. The severity of repairs is average and the frequency of those issues is low, so major repairs are uncommon for the Sentra.

Reports indicate that a defect affecting 2012-2016 Sentras' continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) can cause temporary loss of power and total failures of the CVTs. Many consumers have reported that the CVT can first cause the cars to shake, judder, stall during sudden acceleration, or completely lose power.

- Summary: [XXX] 06/29 637 1). A feature of the Auto Intelligent Headlight feature is not working on 2020 Sentras, all trims. During the daytime (rain or snow) when the windshield wipers are turned on and swish back and forth 4 times, it’s supposed to automatically turn on headlights (which also turns on tail lights so you’re not rear ended). 2). Additionally, when the headlights are in “Headlight” mode (not automatic mode), the owners manual states when the engine is turned off and the door is opened you will get both an alarm chime and a visual warning on the drivers display that lights are on and to turn them off. Just like any normal car going back for 20 years. Well it doesn’t work in 2020 Sentra. Only way I can get feature to chime or show the display warning is to toggle the headlight control switch to “Parking Lights” and back to “Headlights”!. Of course, if I can remember to do that I could remember to turn off the headlights! Auto Intelligent Headlights is explained on the Nissan website, and the 2020 Sentra Brochure States it as a standard feature on all trims. I also have a personal letter from Nissan stating 2020 Sentras have all of this feature. [XXX] [XXX] It doesn’t work. I contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs, after 2 months and being handed off to 2 customer service reps they finally sent a Corp DTS Rep to look at car. After 4 hrs examining it, he contacted the internal only “Nissan Tech Talk”, only for Nissan mechanics and you must have a dealer code to access, not for the public. Turns out, they knew that due to a new wiring system in the 2020 Sentra’s those features and a fog light auto feature don’t work! Apparently it’s a defect, I was never notified they INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I've had my car for just over 6 months and this is the second time I've had to have the sensors recalibrated. I'm not sure if it was due to potholes in Portland the first time, but this time I think it might have been the car wash that caused the issue. Other than that, I'm really enjoying my new Sentra so far!

What can I say? The Sentra SE-R is, and always has been, the best compact car sold in the U.S. It's inexpensive, yet outdrives cars twice its price. The SR20DE motor is remarkable on its own, and has the capacity to be even better. The shifter finds its own way to the gears as if subject to divine intervention. The plain exterior doesn't attract the wrong type of attention either. I absolutely love this car!

I owned a Ford Escort before my SE-R, so I am really happy with my new Nissan. The power is amazing for a 4-cylinder, the stereo sounds great, and the front end looks so cool. Nissan has really done a great job putting some sports into their little sedan. Also, the brakes are very smooth, and the leather heated seats are a great option for such a low-priced car.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Sentra. I bought it used from a dealership in early 2010, and even though it was originally a rental car and had a few extra miles on it, I have put over 40,000 miles on it mainly driving back and forth from TN to FL for school and I have never had any problems. It's a great car that gets good gas mileage on the highway, and I have not had any issues with an uncomfortable ride. I only recently replaced my tires and brake pads, but the car has 70,000+ miles on it now. I've had no issues with the engine or anything under the hood, but I do get regular oil changes and maintenance checks since I do so much highway driving. Everyone always thinks my car is newer than an '08, and I love it! Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with.

Your 1999 Nissan Sentra sounds like a fantastic car! It's great to hear that you've been getting such good mileage out of it, especially with your commute to work and school. I'm impressed that you can make it from San Jose to San Francisco and back on only a quarter tank of gas. It's clear that you take good care of your car and it's serving you well. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

Driving with the stick is a lot of fun, despite the gearing not being quite right for the powerband and the shift action being a bit notchy. It's a shame that there's no limited slip diff, especially since the Juke powertrain comes with one as standard. On the plus side, the car looks upscale and the interior is very nice. However, it's important to note that this is just a thin veneer over a car that is cheaply made and, in my opinion, won't last for the long haul. It feels substantially less well put together than the last generation Sentra, which was built like a brick outhouse. This is confirmed by the fact that the 2007-2012 Sentra weighs 150lb more despite being smaller than the 2013-up model. As a mechanic, I bought this car not only to improve my credit, but also so I wouldn't have to work on my own car, as I spend 60 hours a week most weeks working on other people's cars. Unfortunately, less than 100 miles into my purchase, I noticed that 2nd gear was very hard to engage. I had to bring it to the attention of the dealer 3 times before they confirmed my findings (defective transmission). After that, they replaced it with no issues. I have had the car for a year and have put only 5600 miles on it so far, and already the body is starting to loosen up and various squeaks are manifesting themselves. The body simply does not feel very solid at all. My mother owns a 2008 Sentra with over 180k on it, and it feels more solid than my brand new car. I know this because I service her car for her. Yes, I test drove multiple 2017 Sentras (after I was already committed to mine, unfortunately,) and they are all the same. If I had known, I would have saved myself over 15 grand and bought a 2012 Sentra (the last year for the old bodystyle) from Copart and fixed it, because that's how flimsy this new car feels to me. On the plus side, the car is great for fuel economy, averaging nearly 33mpg around town and touching 54mpg on one particular back road trip! My issue is that I don't feel it will last long, as cost cutting abounds everywhere. The interior is the only place where Nissan didn't try to save money, and it looks very nice. However, in other areas, cost-cutting measures are evident. The ride is generally smooth, but it can be bumpy at times, and the suspension travel is limited. The hood and trunk have large unpainted metal areas, which is a cost-saving measure. The paint on the car is thin and easily scratched, which is unusual for Nissan products. Despite being only nine months old and having only 5600 miles, there are already chips on almost every body panel. The driver's door makes a different sound than the passenger's door, which may indicate that the weatherstrip is wearing out. The rear brakes squeal when stopping, and the sun visors and package tray rattle. Overall, this car may be a better option for leasing rather than buying, in my opinion.

Fuel economy and CVT are my only issues. Ride quality and comfort are great.

I am extremely dissatisfied with this car. Despite owning it for only 11 months, I have already had to replace the front brake pads and machine the rotors. Today, the air conditioning stopped working, and I am only averaging 20 mpg, which is disappointing considering that the FE stands for Fuel Economy. Based on my experience, I will not be purchasing another car from this brand.

The Nissan Sentra Spec V looks great on paper, and it does drive very well at first. However, after about a month of driving the car, I experienced some issues with the transmission becoming clunky and grinding gears during shifts when it was cold out. It was frustrating to deal with, but thankfully multiple dealers were able to fix the issue under warranty. While there were some cosmetic problems with the paint, body molding, and trunk and engine lid, they were all fixed under warranty as well. Although I had some issues with the car, I appreciate the effort put in by the dealers to fix them. Overall, I would recommend looking into other options before considering the Nissan Sentra Spec V, but I do appreciate the initial driving experience.

This car has had several issues, including the A/C needing to be recharged after only 6 months, the carpet coming up and needing to be replaced by Nissan, and the suspension starting to make noise before even owning the car for a year. However, the car is great on gas mileage. Despite these cosmetic issues, the car's transmission went out at 90,000 miles, but Nissan was willing to cover 3/4 of the cost. At around 102,000 miles, there were issues with the MAF sensor, causing the check engine light to come on and the car to barely accelerate. Although Nissan charged around $300 for it, the issue persisted and the dealership was unhelpful. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in the car's overall performance and capabilities.
