2004 Nissan Sentra problems
The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2004 Nissan Sentra.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain air bag inflator replacement service parts that may have been installed as part of a theft or collision repair. The parts include certain passenger-side air bag inflators designed to fit Infiniti 2002-2003 QX4, 2006-2010 M35 and M45; Nissan 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, and both driver and passenger-side inflators designed to fit 2007-2012 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback vehicles. Please see Nissan's recall report for the specific part numbers. These replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the inflators as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 14, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Park It: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2002-2006 Sentra vehicles whose passenger air bags were previously inspected and may have been released without replacing the Takata air bag inflator. In the event of a crash, Takata frontal passenger air bag inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been completed. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will re-inspect the vehicle and, if necessary, replace the air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began January 22, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PM964.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.

- Consequence: IF THE INTERRUPTION IN THE SIGNAL FROM THE SENSOR IS SO BRIEF THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) LOGIC DOES NOT HAVE TIME TO DIAGNOSE THE CONDITION, THE ENGINE MAY STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AT A LOW SPEED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ECM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 21, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

I recently purchased this car and I am absolutely thrilled with it! Despite its affordable price, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it drives. I test drove the Corolla LE before deciding on the Sentra, and it was a terrible experience. In comparison, the Nissan drives like a dream and is even more affordable, costing around 2k less than the Toyota. While I did experience a minor issue with the check engine light coming on at 80 miles, the dealer assured me that it was nothing to worry about and it didn't even register a code when they hooked it up to the computer.

I purchased this car 2.5 years ago with 52,000 miles on it. Currently, it has 140,000 miles on it and has been in two accidents resulting in significant damage. Despite these incidents, I still believe it is a great car. I have experienced some of the common issues reported by other owners, such as a faulty fuel pump, crank sensor, window motor, and trunk motor. The dealer was able to replace these parts under warranty. Additionally, the tires that came with the car were new but had excessive road noise, which the dealer also replaced. Although the belt has been replaced four times, it still squeaks and the car does not handle bumps well. The gas gauge is also unreliable, but I have found that it works better when turning left quickly or after driving about 60 miles. Overall, I remain confident in the car's performance and reliability.
-
I've been the proud owner of my Spec V for a month now and I absolutely love it! So far, I've experienced nothing but great performance from it. While it doesn't come standard with ABS or side airbags, I don't think it's a big deal unless you're particularly concerned about safety. If that's the case, a tuner car like the SE/R models may not be the best choice for you. As for the body kit, I've found several options on eBay and other performance sites. However, if you really want to know what people think about this car, I suggest checking out nissanforums.com. There, you can read reviews from knowledgeable car owners who really appreciate this model.
-
Well worth the money! I'm so glad I bought mine used and am very satisfied with it. I only had to replace the battery and a tire, that's it. Plus, it gets great gas mileage!
-
There were no manufacturing defects, and we had no problems in almost two years. The car got 27 mpg around town. Although the car is no longer with us due to a major collision, I am grateful that no one was injured. I was impressed by how safe it was. If you are looking for a car for a teenager to drive and want them to be safe, this is the car for you!

I purchased this car new based on recommendations that it was a reliable vehicle. Unfortunately, my experience has been quite different. I have had several issues with the car, including the catalytic converter needing to be replaced five times and ongoing problems with the belts. Recently, the car broke down and required an expensive repair. Additionally, the car is quite small and does not have much room in the backseat or trunk, making it difficult to fit a car seat. It was especially frustrating to be stranded on a hot day with my young child. While I have had a negative experience with this Nissan, I appreciate the recommendations that led me to consider it in the first place. Thank you for your help in finding a reliable car in the future.

I have experienced several issues with this car, including four recalls, discomfort, limited space, a weak engine, slow performance, and unreliability. Unfortunately, I have also had the misfortune of experiencing four breakdowns. Despite my efforts to resolve these issues with Nissan, I have not received any assistance. I am currently in the process of filing a complaint with the BBB. I hope that my experience will serve as a cautionary tale to others. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I have owned four Nissans, all Sentras, including this 2004 model. Unfortunately, this particular car has been a driving disaster. It seems that everything breaks in it, from the belts at 40k to the water pump at 55k, and even the clock spring for the horn and airbag at 35k. When I researched this issue, I found that it is a common problem in almost half of Nissan's production. Perhaps it is time for a recall? At 65k, the charcoal filter release valve malfunctioned, causing fuel to shoot out of the gas tank and the RPMs to increase. Now, the check engine light is on, indicating a problem with one of the O2 sensors. It's hard to predict what will happen tomorrow. Thankfully, the car hasn't stopped dead on the road yet, but who knows what the future holds? Additionally, the paint on the car is cheap and started to fade after only a year. Overall, I would not recommend this car.

Since February, I have experienced several issues with my 2004 Nissan Sentra. Despite having a new catalytic converter installed, the gas cap code light has come on again. Additionally, when I hit the cruise control button, my horn honks regardless of whether the cruise control is on or off. While this issue has been inconsistent, it is still a concern. Have any other Nissan Sentra owners experienced similar problems with their vehicles?
