1999 Nissan Sentra problems
The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 1999 Nissan Sentra problems
The Nissan Sentra, produced since 1982, has had its fair share of problems over the years. While this article focuses on the 1999 Nissan Sentra, it is important to note that the specific issues vary according to the model year. Here are some common problems based on complaints from owners of the 1999 Sentra:
- Spark Plugs: Issues with spark plugs have been reported by owners of the 1997 Nissan Sentra, but it is unclear if this problem extends to the 1999 model.
- Acceleration Problems: Some owners of the 1999 Sentra have reported rough acceleration at high RPMs and increased fuel consumption. This issue could be related to a MAF sensor reading that is too high or a throttle opening that is too wide.
- Fuses: Owners of the 1999 Sentra have reported issues with the electrical system, including problems with fuses. One owner noted that unplugging the 10AMP fuse for electrical parts improved the car's gas mileage, suggesting an electrical issue.
- Windows: Problems with the windows have been reported by owners of the 2009 and 2015 Nissan Sentra, but it is unclear if this problem extends to the 1999 model.
- Heater/Defrost: Owners of the 2012 Nissan Sentra have reported that the heater and defrost stopped working, but it is unclear if this problem extends to the 1999 model.
- Tail Lights: Owners of the 1995 Nissan Sentra have reported that the tail lights won't turn on, but it is unclear if this problem extends to the 1999 model.
- Temperature Gauge: Owners of the 2012 Nissan Sentra have reported that the temperature gauge shows normal temperatures, but the car cannot engage gears when it is hot.
- Overheating: Owners of the 2001 Nissan Sentra have reported that the car's temperature hand goes up, but the car is not overheating. Turning on the heater causes the temperature to go down.
- Check Engine Light: Owners of the 2006 Nissan Sentra have reported that the check engine light comes on, but it is unclear if this problem extends to the 1999 model.
These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1999 Nissan Sentra. It is important to note that these issues may not affect all vehicles of this model year, and some problems may be more prevalent than others. If you are experiencing any of these issues with your 1999 Nissan Sentra, it is recommended that you consult with a certified mechanic for further assistance.

- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT, WHEN I NOTICED THAT MY CLUTCH HAD A LITTLE MORE "PLAY" IN THE PEDAL THAN NORMAL. I THOUGHT THIS WAS MY IMAGINATION UNTIL WITHIN ANOTHER 15 MINUTES OF DRIVING I NOTICED THAT THE GEARS STARTED SHIFTING HARDER THAN NORMAL AS WELL. WITHIN ANOTHER FEW MINUTES, THE CLUTCH PEDAL WAS ALMOST ALL THE WAY IN, AND THE CLUTCH WAS NOT RELEASING CAUSING ME NOT TO BE ABLE TO SHIFT AT ALL. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND GET THE CAR INTO SECOND GEAR AND DRIVE THE REMAINDER OF THE WAY HOME WITHOUT INCIDENT. ONCE HOME WITH THE CAR, I INSPECTED THE CLUTCH PEDAL AND THE CLUTCH CABLE UNDER THE HOOD AND NOTICED THAT THE PIECE THE CLUTCH CABLE ATTACHES TO (THE WITHDRAWAL LEVER) WAS CRACKED AND ALMOST COMPLETELY BROKEN IN HALF. THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO MY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THAT AFTER ADJUSTING THE CLUTCH SYSTEM AND TEST DRIVING IT, HE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM I OBSERVED, AND ALMOST COULDN'T GET THE CAR BACK TO HIS SHOP FROM THE TEST DRIVE. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE ENTIRE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AS IT HAD OBVIOUSLY FAILED, AS WELL AS THE DEFECTIVE WITHDRAWAL LEVER. HE FOUND NO OBVIOUS REASON FOR THE FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH AND LEVER, OTHER THAN MANUFACTURER DEFECT. HE DID NOT FEEL THAT THE FAILURE WAS THE RESULT OF NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR OR ABUSE. *AK

I'm so glad to hear that you love your Nissan! It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues with it and that it's been a blast to drive!
-
The Sentra has been a reliable car for me. Although I have had a few issues with it, such as the alternator dying and the keys breaking, it has still managed to hold up well with 140,000 miles on it. It even has some great features like a sunroof, keyless entry, white faced gauges, and fog lights. Despite its problems, it still manages to be faster than my friends' Civics and Corollas. Overall, I am thankful for this car and its ability to keep up with my 40,000 miles/year driving habit.
-
Your car sounds incredibly reliable! You bought it in 2000 with only 34k miles on it and since then, you've put 76,000 miles on it without a single problem. That's amazing! All you've needed are oil changes and new tires. You've taken it on some long trips, including from Wisconsin to Montana and back, Wisconsin to New Mexico and back, and even pulled a U-Haul trailer once. It may lack power, but with the manual transmission, you can shift down for that extra get up. The only time you can't do that is when the A/C is on. Overall, it sounds like you've been more than happy with your Nifty the Nissan.
-
I purchased this 2003 car used with 91K miles on it, and since then I have added another 90K miles. During this time, I have taken the car to the shop around 10 times for various repairs, including the air conditioning circuit for $30, the starter for $200, the power window switch for $100, an exhaust leak three times for $250, and the front O2 for $60. Despite these repairs, the car has never failed to start and has been great on gas. I must also mention that this car is incredibly easy to change the oil filter on. While I understand that not many people may be interested in purchasing a 99 Sentra now, I highly recommend getting a manual shift. It performs well over 2000 RPM, but if you really want to drive, you need to control the engine rev over 4000.
-
This little car has been extremely reliable. It has required very few repairs and has excellent gas mileage. Although the Sentra isn't the most stylish car, I am very pleased with it overall.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it 3 1/2 years ago when it was already 5 years old, and I've had a few repairs done, but nothing out of the ordinary for its age. I have to say, the gas mileage is amazing! Although, I have noticed that when the a/c is on, it affects acceleration and braking. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

I bought this car brand new in 1999 and I'm surprised that I still have it after 128,000 miles and it's still going strong. It has been a very reliable car with regular oil and transmission fluid changes. There have been a few minor issues, such as the sun visor cracking and the driver's side power window push-down button malfunctioning, but I was able to fix them myself. Currently, the engine oil is dripping slowly, which I suspect is due to the crankshaft seal, but I plan to fix it someday. Overall, I can't deny that this car is very reliable for getting from point A to B. In fact, I've owned a 1989 Tercel and a 1993 Civic, and the Sentra outperformed both in terms of quality.

I purchased this car brand new in 1999 and while I have had a few annoying problems with it, overall it has served me well. I did experience some issues with the horn going off unexpectedly during sharp turns, especially on hot days. Additionally, I had to replace the brake drums after 5 years of driving, which was sooner than I expected. There was also an issue with an exhaust sensor that caused the maintenance light to stay on, but it wasn't critical to driving so I chose not to fix it. Despite these setbacks, I am grateful that I was able to walk away from a major car accident involving a tractor trailer, which is a testament to the car's safety. While I may not purchase a Nissan again, I appreciate the time I had with this car.

I bought this car with 65000 miles on it and have put 30000 miles on it so far. It runs really well and I haven't had any problems with it. The gas mileage is great too! Overall, I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a cheap and reliable option.
