Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

THEY FIRST PUT A WHAT THEY CALLED KIT IN IT AND IT LASTED A FEW MONTHS THEN I TOOK IT BACK AND THAT TIME THEY SAID YOU GET A WHOLE NEW PUMP. - Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain air bag inflator replacement service parts that may have been installed as part of a theft or collision repair. The parts include certain passenger-side air bag inflators designed to fit Infiniti 2002-2003 QX4, 2006-2010 M35 and M45; Nissan 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, and both driver and passenger-side inflators designed to fit 2007-2012 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback vehicles. These replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

(Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Nissan Maxima, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4 and I35, 2003 FX35 and FX45, and 2001 I30 vehicles. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.

- Consequence: IF THE INTERRUPTION IN THE SIGNAL FROM THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR IS SO BRIEF THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) LOGIC DOES NOT HAVE TIME TO DIAGNOSE THE CONDITION, THE ENGINE MAY STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AT A LOW SPEED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ECM FREE OF CHARGE. CERTAIN MY 2006 ALTIMAS WHICH HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY REMEDIED UNDER RECALL CAMPAIGN 06V223 (NISSAN R0606) ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL SINCE THE REPROGRAMMING FOR 06V223 ALSO INCLUDED THIS REPROGRAMMING. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 31, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

YOUR VEHICLE WILL ALSO BE INSPECTED TO DETERMINE IF IT HAS BEEN CONSUMING ENGINE OIL AT A HIGHER THAN NORMAL RATE. IN A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF VEHICLES, ENGINE REPLACEMENT WILL BE NEEDED. ON JUNE 9, 2006, NISSAN NOTIFIED OWNERS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTAINING THE OIL AT A PROPER LEVEL. I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to say that I really admire your car's longevity. It's amazing that you've been able to drive it for so long and still have all the interior buttons working and the air conditioning still cold after 8 1/2 years. Even though you had a few issues with the fuel pump and crankshaft sensor, it's great to hear that you were able to get them fixed and that the car is still running strong. It sounds like you've had a really positive experience with this car and I'm glad to hear that it's been the most reliable car you've ever had. Thanks for sharing your story with me!

I've only had the car for a few days and driven it for about 250 miles, so it's not fully broken in yet. The car handles great for a front-wheel drive, and I highly recommend the Brembo brake option - they work excellently. I was searching for a good car under 18K, and this was the only one near that price. The Civic was way too overpriced for me, and no other car came close to the Spec V in that price range. It wasn't too difficult to find, but I had to go to Birmingham (100 miles away) to get my blue one after another dealer sold the black one I wanted from under my dealer. The car is solid, with no noises and a nice, tight feel. I have no complaints about the quality of the car for the price. Take one for a test drive, and you'll see how nice they are. You should definitely buy one!

I bought my Spec V with 400 miles. Now at 15,300, I've been running premium gas as recommended and synthetic fuel. I'm happy to report that I'm averaging 25.8 mpg. This incredible little car has brought me a lot of joy, especially after owning a twin turbo Volvo and an 88 Supra n/a.

4 years and 50,000 miles later, the car is still fast, fun, and easy to drive. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, providing a very smooth ride.

I purchased my Sentra 1.8 a year ago with 58k miles on it. Currently, it has 70k miles and I have started to notice some issues such as hard start up and a drop in gas mileage. Previously, I was getting an average of 30 miles to a gallon, but now it has dropped to 25-28 miles per gallon. I am now on the hunt to figure out the root cause of the issue. I plan to start with the fuel filter or air/fuel sensor as suggested by my mechanic friend before moving on to the fuel pump. I hope to resolve these issues soon. Additionally, my six CD changer tends to skip and not play CDs, even new ones, but that is the least of my worries.

I purchased this car for my husband due to his traveling job. It had only 3000 miles on it when we got it. Unfortunately, we had to replace the transmission at 72605 miles (3-19-08) and again at 77732 miles (5-9-08) when the snap ring had popped off. Currently, at 92000 miles, we are experiencing transmission issues again. It has been a challenging experience with this car.

I purchased this car back in December 2006. Although it doesn't have any fancy features like power windows or seats, cruise control, ABS, or AC, it has proven to be a reliable vehicle. While driving on the freeway, it can be a bit squirrely and noisy, but I've been able to achieve almost 40MPG on road trips while maintaining a speed of 70MPH. It's important to let the power set and beep a few times before turning on the engine to avoid any stalling or hard starts. The car runs great on regular oil. The interior is a bit basic, and the cupholders are not very useful as they can interfere with the manual shift knob. Additionally, the driver's door has a small occasional leak. Overall, it's a decent car that gets the job done.

This car has had multiple issues, including a faulty fuel pump, rack and pinion replacement, door seal leakage, radio malfunction, window regulator problems, air conditioning issues, and strange noises upon starting. Despite attempts to resolve these issues with the dealer and Nissan customer service, no satisfactory solution has been found.

I purchased the car in 2008 with 28,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, within the first month, I experienced a number of issues such as bent rims, a fallen glove box, a muffler pipe that needed to be replaced, a bad battery, and failing window regulators. The most significant issue, however, is that the car struggles to start in hot weather. Despite having an extended warranty, the dealership has been unable to diagnose and fix the issue. While this has been frustrating, I remain hopeful that a solution can be found. I believe that the fuel pump may be the root of the problem, but the dealership requires a proper diagnosis before they can proceed with any repairs. Overall, I have had some challenges with the car, but I am optimistic that these issues can be resolved.
