2019 Nissan Sentra problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.

In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.

The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2019 Nissan Sentra problems

The 2019 Nissan Sentra has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to electronics and the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Electronics Issues

The electronics system in the 2019 Nissan Sentra has been a significant point of concern for many owners. The most common issue is that the radio frequently restarts or turns on when the car is parked, with no known fix.

When drivers bring their Sentras to the dealership to address these electrical issues, dealers often cannot find a specific failure point, leaving owners to live with the problem.

Transmission Woes

The CVT in the 2019 Nissan Sentra has been known to grind, stutter, or fail completely, causing the car to cut out at high speeds.

Engine Problems

The 2019 Sentra is equipped with either a 1.6L or 1.8L four-cylinder engine. The 1.6L engine may shake at low RPMs due to software in the engine controller unit, while the larger 1.8L engine is known to consume too much oil and should be monitored closely to ensure the system isn't running dry.

Recalls

The 2019 Nissan Sentra has two recalls, including one for a brake light switch that may become contaminated and prevent the lights from illuminating and another for a backup camera that may not display correctly.

Other Issues

Other issues reported by owners include difficulties starting the car, with the starter motor stopping and the car shutting off without warning, requiring towing to the dealer.

In summary, the 2019 Nissan Sentra has several common problems, primarily related to electronics and the CVT, which can lead to significant repair costs. Owners have reported numerous electrical issues, including the radio randomly restarting and the battery draining when parked. Transmission failures have also been a significant concern, with replacement costs running around $3,500 if the failure occurs outside of the warranty period. Engine problems, such as high oil consumption and timing chain issues, have also been reported.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-07
  • VIN: 3N1AB7AP3KL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Transmission went out at 167,000 miles. I bought the car used 3 years ago and have kept up the maintenance on the vehicle. About 6 months ago, I was driving home and the vehicle wouldn't accelerate above 20 mph. I kept cutting it on and off and trying to let it sit for a bit then trying to drive again. It wouldn't go above 20 mph. I had it checked out by a mechanic and was told I need a whole new transmission. He said that most of these transmissions don't get more than 120,000 before they go out. I then googled this issue to find so many complaints and Nissan is doing nothing about it. I even called Nissan to speak to someone about it and they acknowledged that they are aware of the transmission issues with this model but there isn't a recall so it will be up to me to pay for the repair. This is obsurd!!!! A company has put a faulty transmission in a vehicle and they are fully aware but do nothing to help their customers. I still owe $9k on the vehicle so I am out so much money.

Negative 2019 Nissan Sentra car reviews

  1. Lester Heller 2025-01-01

I have a 2019 Nissan Sentra that now needs a 3rd transmission per Nissan. Unfortunately, they changed the first one at 50k, so since I drive 1600 miles, they would not replace it again. They want me to pay for this out of pocket. It's frustrating that these cars have transmission problems, and it seems like they are taking advantage of us. I'm only at 70k miles, so it doesn't make sense that I would need a new transmission already, especially since I'm not even at 100k miles!

  2. Kyleigh Brekke 2024-11-28

The fuel mileage of this vehicle is very good, which is definitely a positive aspect. However, the base engine is underpowered and coarse, making it too noisy and always hunting for lower gears even during the slightest hill. Additionally, the rear visibility is very poor, although this is a common issue with many new vehicles. The lawnmower-esque tires make it difficult to keep the car tracking straight, especially on the highway with crosswind. Unfortunately, the CVT transmission is not up to par, as is often the case with Nissan vehicles. Furthermore, the seat belts can be difficult to release. Overall, this vehicle is of poor quality and feels cheap in every way. It's a shame that good fuel economy has to come at such a cost.

  3. Angelo Smith 2024-11-16

Hey there! Thanks for considering this car. I just wanted to share my personal experience with it. In my opinion, the acceleration could be improved and there is a noticeable noise when you go over 40 mph. Additionally, my Nissan Sentra only has 32,000 miles on it and it looks like it has 3 million! So, I personally wouldn't recommend spending your money on this brand. But of course, everyone has different preferences and experiences. Thanks for listening!

  4. Joan Greenholt 2024-09-04

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Nissan Sentra rental I just got. It only had 4K miles on it, which was impressive. However, I found that it made some interesting noises but didn't really go anywhere. I even tried putting it on the sports setting, but it didn't make much of a difference. I will say that it looks nice when it's standing still, but other than that, there isn't much going for it.

  5. Irwin Feeney 2024-09-01

The car was a smooth ride up until about 70k. Then the transmission started slipping at 80k and now I have to replace it. Thank goodness I have extended warranty otherwise I would’ve had to come out of pocket for it. Additionally, the radio does not work with Bluetooth, it just resets all the time. I can only use aux to get it to work.

Positive 2019 Nissan Sentra car reviews

  1. Harvey Monahan 2024-11-19

I really enjoy doing business with Trophy Nissan. I have purchased two cars from them and Andrew has been incredibly kind and helpful!

  2. Ryan Terry 2024-11-12

Nissan promised a Sentra Nismo with over 200HP a few years back, but the current 181 Hp is still plenty fast and fun to drive. When it comes to the overall quality of this car, you get what you pay for. It's great, but it's still a Sentra. However, Nissan did take the Sentra up a couple of notches over standard models by creating a Nismo trim. It has a lowered suspension, bigger wheels, sport bucket seats, carbon fiber, a body kit, and a louder exhaust. The sound system and infotainment are great, and the Super white LED headlights and fog lights are a plus. When this car hits the open road, it flies. It has good pick up and go from a stop and isn't hard on the eyes at all. The Nismo stands above and beyond the base engine and trim. Overall, it's a fun, good-looking, and sporty car that handles beautifully. It can get you wherever you're going safely and comfortably, and it's pretty easy on the eyes. If you're on a budget or just want a car that's safe and fun for the money, and if you can find one in stock, I say go for it. However, there are some areas where improvements could be made for the cost. For example, when you buy a Nismo at the top trim level, the engine should be a minimum of 201 HP, and the seats should be Recaro. It should have in-dash navigation along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a sunroof should be standard. The sport button should genuinely feel noticeable when pushed, and the interior could use a bit more fine-tuning, like a USB port in the back and a rear center armrest and cup holders. But these are just nitpicky things. Overall, it's a great car for the price. If you're looking for performance and a little race car, then there may be better options out there unless you have the budget for the necessary tune and parts.

  3. Tracey Greenfelder 2024-11-03

The car has been trouble-free, except for the camera issue when cruise control is on, which Nissan promptly resolved during my oil change visit without me even having to ask. Although the tires make the ride a bit hard, I plan to replace them with better ones when it's time for new tires. The car lacks power when passing, but overall it's a nice ride. I was able to achieve an impressive 43 mpg while driving at 55 mph, but I'm looking forward to driving at higher speeds. Thank you for considering my feedback.

  4. Torrance Hansen 2024-10-18

Acceleration may be a bit slow, but overall it drives and handles very well. The interior is spacious and the trunk has plenty of room. The adaptive cruise control and great visibility make it perfect for my weekly 300 mile round trip commute. I'm really enjoying it!

  5. Joshuah Heathcote 2024-10-09

I love the gas mileage! You can get up to 41 highway in economy mode. The interior is comfortable except for the seats. You may need a back support pillow for additional lumbar support. The trunk is huge. For the money, I think you got great value...
