2017 Nissan Sentra problems
The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2017 Nissan Sentra problems
The 2017 Nissan Sentra has been reported to have several common problems, based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is the failure of the continuously variable transmission (CVT), which tends to occur around 20,000 miles. The symptoms include shift delays, harsh gear engagement, and the transmission jumping gears. In most cases, the entire CVT needs replacement to resolve the issue.
Another common problem is the intermittent failure of the push-start system. This issue has been reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under ID number 11351403. When the push-start system malfunctions, the radio and lights still work, but the engine will not fire up as expected. Replacing the batteries in the key fob usually fixes the issue. If not, then the car itself may need a new battery. In some cases, the cause links back to failed sensors and switches, including the brake light switch.
The 1.8L (110 ci) engine has also been reported to suddenly stall without warning, particularly around 5,000 miles on the odometer. The problem most often occurs while slowing down to a stop or when the car is idling. There have been complaints of it happening while driving at speed as well, however. After a visit to the shop, car owners have been instructed to increase their gas octane to 91 instead of using 87. Unfortunately, this does not usually help. A failed camshaft position center or crankshaft position sensor are the most likely causes, but techs have to go through the diagnostic steps to make sure.
The 2017 Nissan Sentra's iconic grille features a wide strip of chrome that matches the trim around the windows. Both of these chrome elements have the potential to develop unsightly rust spots all over. The spots do not easily clean off the surface even when caught early. Replacement of the trim piece resolves the issue, but it can still recur in the future since the new strips are not rustproof either.
These issues are not uncommon in the 2017 Nissan Sentra, and it's essential to be aware of them before purchasing the vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify these problems early, potentially saving owners from significant repair costs.
What problems does the 2017 Nissan Sentra have?
Well, there are several that have come up, such as:
- Failure of the continuously variable transmission (CVT)
- Engine suddenly stalls while driving.
- Push start doesn't work intermittently.
- Chrome trim starts to rust prematurely.

What is the recall on 2017 Nissan Sentra?
Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2015-2017 LEAF and 2014, 2016 and 2017 Sentra vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error within the air bag inflators, the passenger frontal air bag may not properly deploy in the event of a crash.
Does 2017 Sentra have CVT?
The S trim comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. The CVT is standard on the SV trim. Fuel efficiency with the CVT is very good at 32 mpg on the highway, and this drops to about 30 mpg if the manual transmission is chosen on the S trim.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- VIN: 3N1AB7AP2HY

- Summary: I purchased my 2017 Nissan Sentra SV brand new. I was hearing a whining noise, so I got a diagnostic test done and it was my transmission, and I needed to replace it. It has a CVT and I have read that there are many problems with the 2017 Nissan Sentra CVT transmissions - complaints and class actions. I talked to Nissan Corp who said they would pay half of the cost to fix it. I am writing because I think there should be a recall on these transmissions, and I should not have had to pay anything. They know there is an issue with the CVT transmissions and should not be selling cars if they know there is a problem, and they do not tell the consumer to beware.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP8HY
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: To Whom it May Concern, I am writing because there has been transmission issues that my 2017 Nissan Sentra SV has been experiencing since I purchased the car brand new on 04/22/2017. I have documentation of me taking it back to Nissan within the first year due to shaking, overheating and a problem accelerating. Nissan has continued to put a bandaid on the cause and has not addressed the real issue in which is the transmission. There are many articles and court documentation of the Nissan CVT Transmission giving people problems in which have bought their cars from 2013-2017/2018. I have taken my car to Nissan and they refuse to address the faulty transmission or pay for any of the repairs. I have documentation over the years from accredited mechanics in which report that the transmission needs. They are trying to charge me over $7,000 for a transmission repair when they are the reason in which it went out to begin with. My car continuted to jerk while driving and stopped while driving in which put myself and others at risk. The dealer acknowledged the recall on CVT transmission and their faulty parts but did not fix it. There was NO warning light or lamos that went off prior to this going out and leaving me stranded on the side of the road. My car was looked at in April of 2024 at Nissan and was told there was no Transmission issues then i come in and all of a sudden they state it needs to be replaced.

- Summary: Complaint Information Business Name Conicelli Nissan Person to whom you spoke Gary Rymarowicz Business Address 1200 Ridge Pike Conshohocken, PA 19428 USA Map It Business Phone Number (610) 825-4200 Product or Service Purchased Fuel Pump Date Purchased [XXX] Purchase Price $1078.61 Form of Payment Credit Card Complaint Summary Attached is the documentation proving that I should not have been charged for replacing the recalled part (Fuel Pump) for "PREMATURE FAILURE" on my car. Further, while my 2017 Nissan Sentra was under warranty I had the car serviced by Nissan 309 and then Conicelli Nissan. I informed the Nissan dealers that the car was not running as smoothly as it should and asked them to check for issue(s) with the fuel filter/fuel system. They acted like they had never heard of a problem with the fuel SYSTEM/PUMP and did not check my car for the fuel system issues requested. Instead they told to use Premium Fuel when I noticed the issue. When the car failed to start Conicelli Nissan finally tested the fuel system they said the Fuel Pump needed to be replaced. and I would have to pay, even though there were known problems and Recalls for Nissan Sentra Fuel Pumps for over 20 years!!! The documentation proves that there have problems with Nissan Sentra FUEL PUMP PREMATURE FAILURES for 21 Years including 2017. The Recall Notice states : "If the Fuel Pump fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a CRASH" If you need any other documentation let me know. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] What would you like the business to do to resolve your complaint? Since there were Nissan Sentra Fuel Pumps problems for over 20 years, and they denied there were any issues with Nissan Sentra Fuel Pumps while the car was under Warranty and Recall, full credit for the fuel pump replacement $1,078.61 is required. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-17
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP0HL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: We have been having issues with our 2017 nissan sentra pretty much since we bought it. it shakes ,shutters etc during exceleration. we asked if it needed a tune up and were told manufacture recommendation was for 124,000 miles. So it didn't seem to be the problem. we continued routine maintenance. On Sat 2/17/2024 the car wouldn;t "go" while we were on our way to work. It didn't want to excelerate etc. It struggled the entire way. We pulled off and parked. turned off the engine and gave it a few minutes. We were abler to reach our destination there after, but for safety decided to have towed home. This was covered by our car insurance. However after talking to a family member ,who works for DEALERSHIP, they suggested looking into Recalls. We have not been able to find one that relates to the CVT problem that we are having. We are currently looking into whether or not we are covered by the dealership we purchased it from, since it doesn't look like Nissan will cover it since it's passed the warranty set by them.

I contacted Nissan as I did in 2022 and now they tell me because the car is way out of the mileage time frame there is nothing they can do. The amount of the transmission is the same as my pay off amount. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We can’t go over 40 mph on 65 mph highway. My be son and wife are in car and we have to pull over on side of highway with vehicles like tractor trailers pass us at 70 mph. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-12
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP4HY
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 MPH coming off the highway and coming to a complete stop at a traffic light, the vehicle was shifted into park to adjust the clock. After shifting to drive and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle lost motive power and failed to accelerate above 35 MPH. The contact stated that the check engine and traction control light warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. However, the contact stated that the fuel pump and accelerator pedal sensor were previously replaced, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,087.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-20
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP6HY
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Low beam headlight failed. It is available for inspection. Drove car with only one low beam headlight. Not safe. Yes. Confirmed by independent service center. Had independent mechanic perform a pre-purchase inspection. They advised that my passenger side low beam headlight was out but they they would not be able to repair it quickly because it required removing the front bumper and removing the headlight assembly. Manufacturer, police, insurance not involved. Warning message stated that there was a headlight system error. Here's what I want you to consider. My mechanic advised that the list price for the headlight assembly is $1,100 and the labor to put the headlight in was $300. They said that there is no access to the low beam LED headlight bulb. The assembly had to be replaced. I could afford to pay $1,400 to replace a light bulb, but many people could not afford it and would do without. I only paid $6,500 for this car with 130,000 miles on it. My suggestion is that auto manufacturers should be required to design headlights so that they can be economically maintained. I was able to find an assembly for $342 and install it myself. Not everyone would be able to do that.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP8HY
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The CVT seems to shudder uncontrollably when accelerating from zero and also when driving at 60mph on the interstate. The RPMs fluctuate erratically and spontaneously when traveling at 60mph or higher. Yes, the car can be inspected upon request-it does the shuddering every time it accelerates from zero. My safety and the passengers safety is at risk if the car were to stop functioning while driving on interstate. Yes, the problem has been reproduced by a local service center. No, the problem has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representative. Would like to have the car inspected by the above if it were at no cost to me since it's a Nissan CVT issue. No, warning lamps or messages are on the dash. Problems began to appear in 2021.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-22
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP2HL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The manufacturer installed anti-theft measures that became broken. Nissan’s “immobilizer” system can not tell the difference between false theft and real theft. I read many people were locked out of their vehicles because the only way to unlock the anti theft system is by paying Nissan. Now I’m unable to drive my car sometimes because it may locked me or my battery dies due to the lightning blinking for hours.
STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-09
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP1HY
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Steering wheel went unsteady. All warning lights went off. Speedometer failed. Unable to shut off the engine and unable to detect key while having the key in place. My safety and others are at risk each time this happens due to not been able to have control of the vehicle speed while having unsteady steering wheel and not knowing of the possibility of breaks failing while trying to drive to a safe place. This has happen about 5-8 times this year. Nissan replaced the IPDM and has continue to failed multiple times after. They have not been able to detect the cause. I have records of each time it has happen and one of those times was while driving on highway. My life and others have been at risk.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3N1AB7AP5HY
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Car was involved in a pretty substantial accident and not a single airbag deployed!
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-10
- VIN: 3N1CB7AP6HY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: The car experienced sudden lack of power in the middle gears and was unable to accelerate. At the same time it displayed the sliding car icon indicating a brake issue. It came and went for a couple of weeks and then just would not pick up speed in the middle gears. The car is a 6 speed manual. The code thrown was for a manifold control valve failure. We could not get Nissan to schedule a repair so we took it to an independent who had to replace the entire manifold as no service parts were otherwise available. They could find no reason for the sliding car icon to have kept coming on. Even after the manifold replacement it continues to do so at random times. It causes concern over the brakes which is disconcerting at the least. The sudden loss of acceleration while the problem was going on also caused a few scary moments. Nissan was contacted and declined to reimburse us nor did they offer to check the car. This car has been serviced by the dealer exclusively except for the manifold replacement and the service schedule was adhered to. It is a 2017 model and now has under 45,000 miles. It had about 41,000 when the problem occurred. No reason for such an early failure. It is a relatively rare model so no information was available.

Previous Vehicles Owned: 2010 Sentra SL, 2013 Nissan Cube; Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Nissan Sentra. While it may not be a race car, it's still a great choice for those who want a reliable and efficient vehicle. Personally, I would have liked more horsepower, but the Sentra is still adequate, especially when you use the
-
Fun to drive stick. You'll be happy to know that it's averaging 34.7 mixed city/highway. The interior and trunk are quite spacious, making it a great car overall. Plus, you got a fantastic deal on it!
-
I purchased my Sentra from a local Nissan dealer. The previous owner had added 20' rims and a new exhaust system, which I found interesting considering it's only a 1.6L engine. However, I have had a great experience with this car over the past 2 years. It has been reliable and required minimal maintenance. The sports mode is a nice feature that provides an extra boost when needed. Overall, I highly recommend this car.
-
The car has a small gas tank (around 13 gallons) and tires, but it makes up for it with its tight handling that allows you to feel the road, which I personally enjoy. Additionally, I appreciate the eco setting, spacious interior and trunk, and great visibility. However, there is limited information provided on how to use the infotainment system, and the navigation is not as good as WAZE, although it is still decent. While the screen is good, it seems that using the USB port for your phone may cause you to lose sound. Overall, it's a friendly car that has its quirks but is still enjoyable to drive.
-
I bought this car used for a very reasonable price of 16k with just under 10k miles on it. I had the Check engine light come on twice, once around 16k and another time around 30k, but both times it was for minor issues that were no big deal. The ride is best on the highway, especially with the premium package. The navigation and 8 speaker Bose sound system are fantastic for this price range. I absolutely love the styling of this car, and the manual transmission provides ample power (although I'm not sure about the CVT). I think the manual will last longer anyway. I get compliments on the rims, and even after 38k miles, a portion of which were on the highway, it still feels like it drives just as well as when I first got it. My only complaint is that after a long drive (500 miles) and pushing the car hard, my check engine light started blinking. However, I concluded that this was due to not giving the car enough of a break, so I now make sure to take it easy on those types of trips. Overall, I think this car will be reliable in the long term, and if not, it was still a blast to drive for such a great price. I can even still trade it in three years later with only a $5k loss, which isn't too bad for a Nissan. The best parts of the car are its power, fun factor, and how easy it is to drive (if you know how to drive a manual). The wind noise is better than average for this type of compact car, but you will feel bumps in the road, probably due to the sporty feel. All in all, it's a great car and definitely worth it.

I've had this car for only 2 years now and unfortunately, it has been in the shop 3 times for the same problem - the mass airflow sensor. Every winter, it just fails for no reason. Although it doesn't seem to affect the running or driveability, it's still a bad sign. I'm worried about what else might go wrong before the warranty runs out. I must say, I'm disappointed. Additionally, the stereo system and aux input are of poor quality. The aux input has a terrible short in it and can't be plugged in completely. I've tried several brands of cords, but the issue remains. The speakers also crackle, which is not impressive. Lastly, the shifting and acceleration hesitates from 3rd to 4th gear. Despite these issues, I love the car as a whole, but I'm nervous to buy it outright at this point.

This car is experiencing intermittent starting issues. While it may not seem like a big deal at first, it can be quite distressing if you end up stranded. We understand how scary this can be and we're here to help.

The car's performance has been disappointing, with slow acceleration and poor fuel efficiency. Despite my initial desire for the Juke, I was persuaded to purchase this vehicle by the Nissan dealership in Hayward, CA. Unfortunately, after two years and 40,000 miles, the transmission is now slipping. This issue requires attention and resolution.

We went with Nissan for their reputation of reliability, but unfortunately, our experience with this Sentra has been disappointing. The door handles are separating from the car and the engine sounds rough. We are concerned about potential future issues and have decided to avoid Nissans in the future.

Driving with the stick is a lot of fun, despite the gearing not being quite right for the powerband and the shift action being a bit notchy. It's a shame that there's no limited slip diff, especially since the Juke powertrain comes with one as standard. On the plus side, the car looks upscale and the interior is very nice. However, it's important to note that this is just a thin veneer over a car that is cheaply made and, in my opinion, won't last for the long haul. It feels substantially less well put together than the last generation Sentra, which was built like a brick outhouse. This is confirmed by the fact that the 2007-2012 Sentra weighs 150lb more despite being smaller than the 2013-up model. As a mechanic, I bought this car not only to improve my credit, but also so I wouldn't have to work on my own car, as I spend 60 hours a week most weeks working on other people's cars. Unfortunately, less than 100 miles into my purchase, I noticed that 2nd gear was very hard to engage. I had to bring it to the attention of the dealer 3 times before they confirmed my findings (defective transmission). After that, they replaced it with no issues. I have had the car for a year and have put only 5600 miles on it so far, and already the body is starting to loosen up and various squeaks are manifesting themselves. The body simply does not feel very solid at all. My mother owns a 2008 Sentra with over 180k on it, and it feels more solid than my brand new car. I know this because I service her car for her. Yes, I test drove multiple 2017 Sentras (after I was already committed to mine, unfortunately,) and they are all the same. If I had known, I would have saved myself over 15 grand and bought a 2012 Sentra (the last year for the old bodystyle) from Copart and fixed it, because that's how flimsy this new car feels to me. On the plus side, the car is otherwise great, and I average nearly 33mpg around town and have touched 54mpg on one particular back road trip! My only issue is that I don't feel it will last long. Cost cutting seems to be everywhere. The interior is the only place where Nissan didn't try to save money, and it looks very nice. However, in other areas, cost-cutting measures are evident. The ride is generally smooth, but it can be bumpy at times, and the suspension travel is limited. The hood and trunk have large unpainted metal areas, which is a cost-saving measure. The paint on the car is thin and easily scratched, which is unusual for Nissan products. Despite being only nine months old and having only 5600 miles, there are already chips on almost every body panel. The driver's door makes a different sound than the passenger's door, which may indicate that the weatherstrip is wearing out. The rear brakes squeal when stopping, and the sun visors and package tray rattle. Overall, this car may be a better option for leasing rather than buying, in my opinion.
