2002 Nissan Sentra problems
The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2002 Nissan Sentra problems
The 2002 Nissan Sentra is known for several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light, which may indicate an issue with one or more of the tires, such as low or high air pressure, a slow leak, or a flat tire. This can be a safety concern, as it can affect the vehicle's handling and fuel efficiency.
Another issue that some owners have reported is related to the fog lights, which may remain on even when they are not needed. While this is not a major problem, it can be a nuisance and may affect the vehicle's battery life if the lights are left on for an extended period of time.
The 2002 Nissan Sentra's automatic shift lock system can also be a source of frustration for some drivers. This system requires the driver to step on the brake before starting the car or shifting into drive, which can be confusing for those who are not familiar with it. However, once drivers get used to this feature, it can become second nature.
The traction control system can also cause issues in some 2002 Nissan Sentras. When engaged, this system helps prevent the wheels from spinning on slick surfaces or during initial acceleration. However, if the traction control light is on, it may indicate an issue with the system, which could affect the vehicle's performance and safety.
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light is another common issue in the 2002 Nissan Sentra. This light indicates that there is an issue with the anti-lock brakes, which could be caused by a faulty speed sensor, low brake fluid, or total brake failure. This is a serious safety concern and should be addressed as soon as possible.
Some owners of the 2002 Nissan Sentra have also reported issues with the engine, including a lack of heat in cold weather. This can be a major inconvenience, especially in areas with harsh winters. However, some owners have reported that the engine is otherwise reliable and has good gas mileage.
Overall, the 2002 Nissan Sentra has several common problems that can affect its performance and safety. While some of these issues are relatively minor, others are more serious and should be addressed as soon as possible. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these problems and ensure that the vehicle remains safe and reliable for years to come.
What common problem on Nissan Sentra?
Various fluid leaks, overheating, power loss, or CVT failure are also possible due to these mechanical issues. That said, if you suspect that you are having a transmission issue, be sure to get it checked out by your local mechanic as soon as possible.
How many miles will a 2002 Nissan Sentra last?
But, considering that the Sentra has far lower than average numbers for complaints and recalls with the NHTSA, it would be a fair estimate to put the life expectancy somewhere in the 150,000 to 200,000-mile range. That said, you can definitely get your Sentra above 200,000 miles.
Is the Nissan Sentra a reliable car?
The Nissan Sentra Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 14th out of 36 for compact cars.
How many miles can you put on a Nissan Sentra?
2019-Current Nissan Sentra Lifespan: 200,000 miles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 14 recalls for different components of the 2002 Nissan Sentra.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain air bag inflator replacement service parts that may have been installed as part of a theft or collision repair. The parts include certain passenger-side air bag inflators designed to fit Infiniti 2002-2003 QX4, 2006-2010 M35 and M45; Nissan 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, and both driver and passenger-side inflators designed to fit 2007-2012 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback vehicles. Please see Nissan's recall report for the specific part numbers. These replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the inflators as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 14, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669.

- Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON, CREATE A NO START CONDITION, CAUSE REDUCED ENGINE POWER, OR CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSORS. CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR(S), AND IN SOME CASES, THE VARIABLE TIMING CONTROL SENSOR(S). VEHICLES INVOLVED IN A PREVIOUS RECALL CAMPAIGN, 01V357, ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS NEW CAMPAIGN. THE REPLACEMENT SENSORS USED IN THAT CAMPAIGN ARE ALSO AFFECTED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON DECEMBER 22, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 OR INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:MODULE
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE QG18DE ENGINE OR QR25DE ENGINES, THE FOAM MATERIAL USED FOR THE INTERIOR LINING OF THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) BOX EMITS SULFUR AS IT CURES.
- Consequence: IF ONE OF THE RESISTORS INSIDE THE ECM HAS A CRACK ON THE SURFACE COATING, THE GAS MAY CAUSE CORROSION OF THE RESISTOR. THIS COULD CAUSE THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO COME ON, POOR DRIVABILITY (IDLE INSTABILITY, POOR ACCELERATOR), OR THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE INSIDE LINING MATERIAL FROM THE ECM BOX. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON DECEMBER 22, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 2.5 LITER ENGINE, THE EXHAUST PIPE HANGER PIN MAY CATCH DEBRIS FROM THE ROAD THAT COULD BE IGNITED BY CONTACT WITH THE MAIN CATALYST. ALSO ON 2002 ALTIMA AND SENTRA VEHICLES, CERTAIN ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE PRE-CATALYST TO OVERHEAT AND DAMAGE THE CATALYST SUBSTRATE.
- Consequence: EITHER OF THESE TWO CONDITIONS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE PROTRUDING PORTION OF THE EXHAUST PIPE HANGER PIN. IN ADDITION TO THE CORRECTIVE ACTION, IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE IN THE EVENT OF POOR OR IMPROPER MAINTENANCE THAT COULD RESULT IN OIL SPILLAGE, HEAT SHIELD(S) WILL BE INSTALLED ON THE PRE-CATALYST AND EXHAUST TUBE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JULY 28, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261. NISSAN RECALL NOS. R3007, R3014, R3015, R3016, R3017. ALSO ON 2002 ALTIMA AND SENTRA VEHICLES, CERTAIN ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE PRE-CATALYST TO OVERHEAT AND DAMAGE THE CATALYST SUBSTRATE. IF SUBSTRATE PARTICLES ENTER THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, THEY COULD SCORE THE CYLINDER WALLS, RESULTING IN INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION. IF THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL IS NOT CHECKED ON A PERIODIC BASIS AND DROPS BELOW THE LOW LEVEL, AND THE DRIVER CONTINUES TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE IGNORING NOTICEABLE ENGINE NOISE, ENGINE DAMAGE MAY OCCUR WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. THE PRE-CATALYST WILL BE TESTED TO ENSURE IT IS WORKING PROPERLY AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND INSIDE THE PRE-CATALYST, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: ON SOME PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NISSAN-APPROVED ACCESSORY FLOOR MAT THAT WAS INSTALLED EITHER AT THE ASSEMBLY PLANT OR BY THE DEALER, DUE TO THE LENGTH OF THE DRIVER SIDE FLOOR MAT, A SMALL AMOUNT OF MAT MOVEMENT COULD CAUSE THE MAT TO INTERFERE WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND NOT ALLOW THE PEDAL TO RELEASE AFTER IT IS DEPRESSED.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS UNEXPECTEDLY, IT COULD LEAD TO A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE DRIVER SIDE FLOOR MAT AND IF IT IS A NISSAN FLOOR MAT SUBJECT TO THIS RECALL, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR MATS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 18, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

This car is really amazing and enjoyable to drive! The 2.5L in my Spec V pulls hard and always has more power to offer. It's surprisingly powerful for a straight 4. I drove it very hard on the 1st tank and still got 26 MPG out of it. But this car shines the most when you take it out on country roads and take some corners at speeds that don't seem like it should be able to handle, but it does handle them, really nicely. I'm the 2nd owner and it's got 85,000 miles and it's never had any problems.

I've owned my car for two years now and it has been an absolute dream. The only repair I've had to do was to fix a hose that caused some leakage, but other than that, it has been smooth sailing. The car handles well and picks up speed fairly quickly, although it could be better. The interior and exterior of the car look great, much better than other compact cars! My only complaint is that the driver's seat doesn't go back far enough. As a tall guy (6'2), driving long distances can be a bit of a nuisance, but for the price, I don't think you can beat the value of this car. By the way, I highly recommend getting the stereo upgrade that comes with the subwoofer. It's definitely worth the money!

After test driving this vehicle, I had a big smile on my face. It was an absolute blast to drive! As a 37-year-old father of two, I was looking for something sporty, economical, and practical (with four doors). I did a lot of research into all the other makes and models and test drove almost all of them (excluding American manufacturers). In my opinion, the Sentra SE-R gave me everything I was looking for at the best price ($17,200). While there may be minor things that are not perfect about the car, when you compare it to the competition, they become irrelevant. I highly recommend taking one for a test drive and experiencing it for yourself!

This car is amazing! It loves hills, thanks to its high low-end torque, and it handles curves like a dream, thanks to the best-balanced sport suspension on the market, in my opinion. It's unbelievably fun to drive, and at just 16,500, it's an unbeatable value. Plus, it's practical too - I average 26 mpg. If you're looking to add a little extra power, consider upgrading the muffler to a Raven Performance stainless steel and adding a Holley Performance drop-in filter. The muffler is only 215 at Midas, and the filter is just 38 at Advanced Autoparts. The Holley PN is 221-14 and outperforms the K&N by 10%. Thanks for considering this amazing car!

I've been driving this car for the past eight months and I'm so happy with it! It looks great, handles very well, and I haven't had any problems with it. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone. In fact, I love it so much that I'm already dreading the day when I have to give it up, although I'm excited to eventually pass it down to my teenage son.

It is very reliable. It has given me minimal issues. The only issues I have had is related to rusting since it is old and proper care was not taken of it.

I bought this car brand new and loved its strong engine with plenty of torque (for a 2.5-liter engine), the limited slip differential, and the great grip from the tires and suspension. I was excited to finally own a new car that I could take care of and keep in great condition. However, my excitement didn't last very long. From day one, I kept fresh (every 3,000 miles) Mobil 1 oil in it, but despite my efforts, the car burned more oil than any car I've ever owned - 2 quarts every oil change. Additionally, at around 30k to 40k, the car lost a lot of power and started blowing black smoke, which made it impossible to keep the bumper clean. To make matters worse, the clear coat started to peel at 50k, making the car look quite unattractive.

I enjoyed my Nissan until the ecu/ecm began to malfunction, causing my mileage to fluctuate. Unfortunately, the dealer's eagerness to profit from the situation left a bad taste in my mouth. As a result, I have decided to never purchase another Nissan.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the new spec-v. While there are many great aspects of the car, I have noticed some issues with the paint quality. Unfortunately, my car and many others have numerous paint chips on the front and even the roof. Despite this, Nissan has refused to repaint the hood and has instead blamed the consumer for the issue. I even took my car to a well-respected autobody shop, but they were unable to find a consistent reading on the paint thickness. If you don't mind the possibility of your car having no paint on the front, sides, and roof, then this may not be a concern for you. However, in my opinion, the poor paint quality will greatly impact the car's resale value. I hope this information is helpful to you.

I recently purchased a car, but unfortunately, I discovered a minor oil leak less than a month later. Additionally, the car vibrates as if it's going to stall after driving just a few miles. I plan to take it back to the dealership for servicing. It's surprising to me that Nissan would allow a car with these issues to be sold.

The Sentra has only 85k miles, but unfortunately it has some mechanical problems. According to a recent dealer service quote, it will need several parts replaced, including the head gasket, valve cover seal, front crank seal, exhaust manifold gasket, intake gasket, and all spark plugs. The drive belts are also heavily cracked, and the timing chain is stretched and needs a tensioner and guides. In the past, there have been issues with the oil dip stick breaking, resulting in the removal of the oil pan with NTB and dealer service pointing fingers. Additionally, the brake calipers have malfunctioned, causing abnormal pad wear and short rotor life on the left front. Despite spending over $2,000 in repairs, the Sentra just isn't worth it. For reference, I have owned a Geo Storm, Honda Accord, Chevy Blazer, Ford Mustang, and Jeep Cherokee, all of which lasted over 130k miles.
