1993 Nissan Sentra problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.

In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.

The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 1993 Nissan Sentra problems

The Nissan Sentra, produced since 1982, has had its fair share of problems over the years, with varying severity and frequency depending on the model year. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the Nissan Sentra:

  • Brake Problems: Brake problems are a recurring issue for Nissan Sentras. For instance, many 2013 Sentra owners have reported that the brakes don't engage after stepping on the brake pedal until it hits the floor. This issue is often caused by a master brake cylinder that has failed prematurely. Replacing the faulty cylinder will resolve the problem.
  • Noises While Driving: Some Nissan Sentra owners have reported hearing loud howling or screeching noises during windy days and when driving at high speeds. While some suspect it's loose weatherstripping, others have had no luck determining where the sounds are coming from. The car could also vibrate enough to make noticeable noise at highway speeds.
  • Body and Paint Problems: Many 2016 Nissan Sentra owners have reported a plethora of body and paint problems. The paint and clear coat on the affected vehicles' bodies may fade early or flake off. Chrome trims could also develop rust, while moldings and trims may become loose and eventually fall off.
  • Electrical Problems: Since 1996, Nissan Sentra owners have reported various electrical problems. These issues can range from the car not starting to the dashboard gauges not working properly.
  • Fuel System Problems: The Nissan Sentra has had issues with the fuel system, including recalls for faulty fuel pumps and crankshaft and camshaft sensors. These problems can lead to engine stalling and failure.
  • Engine Problems: The Nissan Sentra has experienced issues with the engine, including rough idling, hesitation, and failure of the catalytic converter. These problems can lead to decreased performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Suspension Problems: The Nissan Sentra has had issues with the suspension, including problems with the front end assembly and acceleration issues. These problems can lead to decreased handling and control.
  • Interior Accessories Problems: The Nissan Sentra has had issues with interior accessories, including problems with the windows, heater, and O/D OFF light. These problems can lead to decreased comfort and convenience.
  • Starting and Stalling Problems: The Nissan Sentra has had issues with starting and stalling, including problems with the battery and ignition system. These problems can lead to the car not starting or stalling while driving.

It is important to note that the severity and frequency of these problems can vary depending on the model year and individual vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become serious problems.

Negative 1993 Nissan Sentra car reviews

  1. Barrett Lynch 2024-10-03

What a great car! It was my first car at the age of 30, and it was so reliable and trustworthy. Even though it was a basic 'E' model with a small engine, manual windows, and no passenger side mirror, it never gave me any real trouble. I drove it for over 90k miles, using it for everything from running errands to going on road trips (although it's probably best for college students on a budget!). The fuel economy was excellent, with high 20s MPG, but the engine was a little skimpy, so merging onto the expressway full of SUVs could be a bit nerve-wracking. However, the only maintenance issues were routine. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

  2. Alexander Walter 2024-05-07

Hey there! I wanted to share that my 1993 Nissan Sentra just hit 400,000 miles on 12/15/12 and it still has its original engine. How about you? Feel free to share your own mileage!

  3. Dillan Miller 2024-03-29

You have a rather large family, with your son being 220 lbs and tall, and your daughter being 6'1

  4. Ephraim Grimes 2024-01-14

This car is fast enough to take on just about anything on the road, going from 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. With a recent addition of an AEM ram air intake and a few other things, it now does 0-60 in under 7 seconds, all for less than $200! The car has a great stance, even with stock suspension, and good looks for a late 80s design. The SR20DE engine in my car, and the SE-R is bulletproof, they say it can handle 500 HP of boost off stock internals. I have seen these cars with over one million miles on them, and that was the weaker GA16DE! The car is a blast to drive, quick, and the handling is as good if not better than most modern cars. The seats are excellent, really comfortable, and really hold you snug going around corners. Though it is not big by any means and probably not that safe (no air bags or anti-lock brakes), this car is good for families on a budget. The front seats fold and slide forward on the passenger side, and easily slide forward on the driver's side, so it is easy for loading up babies and kids. Also, the genius engineers at Nissan raised the front seats up high enough to at least fit a size 14 men's foot under comfortably. Overall, this car is a great choice for anyone looking for a budget-friendly option that is still fun to drive and has a lot of character.Although my car may be rusty, I am confident that it will last for many more years. In fact, I plan on swapping my engine and transmission into a donor car when the frame eventually breaks from rust. If you're thinking of owning one, be sure to red-line it once a month to keep everything clean. While the A/C may slow it down to the level of a Honda Civic, I've seen dynos that show the car makes stock numbers of 120 WHP and 119 WFT-LBS. Even though the A/C doesn't work in my car and the cruise control is broken, I still love it. Sure, it has a bad 5th gear pop out that costs around $500 to fix, but I've found a solution that works for me - holding it in 5th gear up any incline. Thanks for reading!

Positive 1993 Nissan Sentra car reviews

  1. Marlin Hegmann 2025-01-07

I also loved this little car. I bought it used with 26,000 miles on it and took many trips from North Carolina/Virginia back home to Pennsylvania for holidays and family visits. The fuel pump gave me some trouble (had to repair it twice), but it always cranked when I needed it. Unfortunately, my AM radio never worked, but the cassette player sounded pretty good. I'm now at 148,000 miles and I still haven't had to change the clutch! The burgundy color and simple styling made it plain, but when it was clean and swept (which wasn't often), it looked pretty good.

  2. Abel Medhurst 2024-11-24

My sister convinced me to buy this car from her, and although it wasn't what I had in mind at the time, I quickly fell in love with it. I've put 50,000 miles on it (now has 175,000) and it consistently gets about 32/37 mpg city/highway. I've had to replace the clutch (just over $500), CV joints (about $200), and headlight switch ($150), but that was all after 125,000 miles and it was well worth it. I absolutely adore this car - it rides so smoothly despite the beating I've given it (a year of backroads, only changed the oil twice, and never maintained it once!), and it just asks for more. It has lots of power and kick for a 4-cylinder, handles great, and eats up curves. Unfortunately, I have to trade it for a 4-door since I had my son, but it makes me cry to let it go :( In conclusion: this car is so much fun to drive!

  3. Don Bayer 2024-11-20

Hi there! I bought this car four years ago with 143,000 miles on it after my previous vehicle was totaled in an accident. I needed a reliable car quickly, but didn't want to break the bank. I'm happy to say that this car has been a great investment! It now has over 200,000 miles on it and is still going strong. I've had to replace the CV joints, radiator, and oil gasket recently, but overall it's been a low-maintenance car. It gets great gas mileage and has good pick up, although it does burn a bit of oil. I plan to keep driving it until it's no longer feasible, but I am starting to look for a roomier vehicle. Thanks for reading!

  4. Arno Kshlerin 2024-11-10

I'm so sorry to hear that your Sentra was stolen! It sounds like you really enjoyed it. It's impressive that you had it for 5 years with very few maintenance problems, especially considering it was until 2002 and had 60000 miles on it. While it may not have been the most powerful car, it still had some pep to it. It's definitely a no-frills kind of car, but it's a great value for the money. If you're looking for a reliable car with good gas mileage and an affordable price, I would definitely recommend a Sentra.

  5. Nestor Streich 2024-11-10

This car took me through it all, nice summer days and bitter NJ winters. Sadly with 108,000 miles or so, this little pup cracked its whole front. The blame can only be placed on poor drivers in NJ. The only thing I was unhappy about is that my car looked like it had hit something going 65mph and the other cars involved looked like the actual event had happened, a gradual 10mph fender bender. It had been through 4 crashes before that and held up pretty well. The only thing ever to go wrong was body work, the engine has never given up. I still love my Sentra!
