2001 Nissan Sentra problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.

In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.

The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2001 Nissan Sentra problems

The 2001 Nissan Sentra is known to have issues with its engine and head gasket, particularly in the 2001-2003 model years. Some drivers have reported that their engines gave out or their head gaskets blew out, although the problems were not widespread.

Transmission issues are also common in the Nissan Sentra, particularly in the 2019 model year, where some consumers have reported transmission problems. The 2012-2016 model years also have transmission issues, with many owners reporting that the car's continuously variable transmission can cause temporary loss of power and total failure. These problems can result in crippled vehicles and large repair bills, and have even led to class action lawsuits against Nissan.

Brake problems are another recurring issue in the Nissan Sentra. For example, many 2013 Sentra owners have reported that the brakes do not engage after stepping on the brake pedal until it hits the floor. In some cases, this issue is caused by a master brake cylinder that has failed prematurely. Replacing the bad cylinder will resolve the issue.

In addition to these common problems, the 2001 Nissan Sentra has specific issues related to its heater. Some owners have reported that when driving the car, the temperature hand goes up, but the car is not overheating. However, when they turn on the heater, the temperature goes down. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty thermostat or a blocked heater core.

In summary, the 2001 Nissan Sentra has a range of common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include engine and head gasket problems, transmission issues, and brake problems. The 2001 model year also has specific issues related to the heater, where the temperature hand goes up but the car is not overheating. These problems can result in crippled vehicles and large repair bills, and can be caused by a variety of factors.

Is Nissan Sentra 2001 reliable?

Reliable and sporty SE

I have had a 01 Sentra SE (2.0L) for over 10 years and it is now at 110K miles. No significant problems with regular oil change and service. Only recently the passenger side sun shade internal ratchet mechanism stopped holding up the shade. Tires make a difference in handling and noise.

What common problem on Nissan Sentra?

Various fluid leaks, overheating, power loss, or CVT failure are also possible due to these mechanical issues. That said, if you suspect that you are having a transmission issue, be sure to get it checked out by your local mechanic as soon as possible.

How many miles can a 2001 Nissan Sentra last?

Nissan vehicles are generally known for their reliability and longevity. On average, a well-maintained Nissan can last between 200,000 to 300,000 miles. This means if you drive around 15,000 miles per year, which is the average for most drivers, you can expect your Nissan to last between 13 to 20 years.

What year Nissan Sentra has transmission problems?

Reports indicate that a defect affecting 2012-2016 Sentras' continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) can cause temporary loss of power and total failures of the CVTs. Many consumers have reported that the CVT can first cause the cars to shake, judder, stall during sudden acceleration, or completely lose power.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-17
  • VIN: 3N1CB51D61L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have '01 Nissan Sentra. Over the years I kept having my car auto shut off while driving. My recent incident occurs on 2/17/22 while driving on a freeway at 70mph that left me stranded. I had it towed to the nearest auto mechanics. While the engines shuts down, the Service Engine Soon light came on followed by the Battery Icon and Oil Lamp Icon. In the past I had most if not all my catalytic converters and O2 sensors replaced but the problem persisted. Some mechanics stated it was electrical but offered no solution. I did had an oil changed and battery tested a week earlier but no issue was found. My most recent mechanic checked it out and told me it's not the battery nor the alternator, they're both still good. I had to leave my car over the weekends for a full diagnostic.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-07-09
  • VIN: 3N1CB51D71L
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED OF AROUND 45 MPH ON A BUSY COLORADO ROADWAY AND THE CAR ALL OF THE SUDDEN STALLED. LOST ENGINE POWER, POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. LUCKILY COASTED TO THE SHOULDER. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO AN AUTOMOTIVE SHOP. IT WAS DIAGNOSED AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT SENSORS HAD FAILED. I CALLED NISSAN ON 7/12/2016 AND REPORTED THIS SAFETY ISSUE (REFERENCE NUMBER 22954833). ON 7/14/2016 I TALKED TO [XXX] AT NISSAN AND HE SAID THIS WAS RECALLED IN 2003 AND AN ALREADY CLOSED RECALL. I ASKED HIM IF HE WAS GOING TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT TO NISSAN ENGINEERS DEPARTMENT, BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND A RECENT RECALL ISSUE. I STATED THAT BECAUSE THE CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING THAT PUT PEOPLE?S LIVES AT RISK. I ASKED THE NISSAN REPRESENTATIVE [XXX] IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY OTHER COMPLAINTS WITH THIS CAR'S MODEL ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT SENSORS ARE STILL FAILING. HE SAID HE DIDN'T KNOW. THE NISSAN REPRESENTATIVE [XXX] STATED TO ME THAT WITH THE AGE OF THE CAR THIS IS EXPECTED TO HAPPEN WITH THESE PARTS. I STATED TO HIM THAT BECAUSE THE CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT SENSORS ARE STILL FAILING, THEREFORE CAUSING A CAR TO STALL WHILE DRIVING IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE REPORTED. HE SAID HE WAS NOT GOING TO REPORT IT TO ANYONE. I STATED I WAS GOING TO REPORT IT TO THE NHTSA, BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND THEY NEED TO KNOW THE ISSUE STILL EXISTS FROM THEIR PREVIOUS RECALL. THE NISSAN REPRESENTATIVE [XXX] THEN STATED IF YOU WANT TO CONTACT THEM GO AHEAD. PLEASE TAKE MY SUBMISSION SERIOUSLY. IF THIS WAS RECALLED IN THE PAST AND IS STILL HAPPENING I FEAR PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE AT RISK. I HOPE YOU HAVE A DATABASE THAT KEEPS THESE COMPLAINTS COMPILED AND IF THIS IS HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE PLEASE GET THESE RECALLED SO THE PROBLEM CAN BE RESOLVED AND NO LIVES ARE LOST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, I APPRECIATE IT. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-03-21
  • VIN: 3N1CB51D21L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: CAR CONSTANTLY SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING, STEERING AND BRAKES LOCK UP AS WELL. IT DOES THIS IDLING AT LIGHTS AND WHILE DRIVING MAKING TURNS. VERY DANGEROUS! I HAVE REPLACED SEVERAL SENSORS (AT MY EXPENSE) TO TRY TO KEEP THE CAR GOING, BUT I'M TERRIFIED TO DRIVE IT AS I FEAR IT WILL STALL AGAIN IN TRAFFIC AND POTENTIALLY KILL ME AND MY FAMILY. CHECKED MY VIN AGAINST THE MANY RECALLS THAT WOULD CAUSE THESE PROBLEMS AND STATES THAT NONE OF THESE RECALLS APPLY TO THIS CAR! NISSAN USED TO BE A GOOD COMPANY, NOW IT'S JUST A LEMON FACTORY! NOT TO MENTION THEIR DEALERSHIP SERVICE IS ABSOLUTELY USELESS! I DON'T SEE HOW SUCH DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY ISSUES DO NOT HAVE RECALLS ON THEM!!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-01
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 3N1CB51D61L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT 40 PLUS MILES AN HOUR THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER CLOGGED AND CAUGHT FIRE CAUSING A MISFIRE IN CYLINDER ONE AND RUINING THE IGNITION COIL FOR THAT CYLINDER. I CONTACTED NISSAN AFTER SEEING ONLINE THAT THE EXACT SAME PART HAS MALFUNCTIONED ON SEVERAL OTHER CARS OF THE EXACT SAME YEAR MAKE AND MODEL. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE IT TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THEM DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM FOR A $89 FEE. EVEN IF I HAD THE 89 DOLLARS TO PAY TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED IT WOULD NOT HAVE PAID IT. I DID NOT USE FAULTY MATERIAL IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THE VEHICLE AND FEEL THAT ANY DIAGNOSTIC FEE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABSORBED BY NISSAN NORTH AMERICA SINCE THEY VOLUNTARILY RECALLED THE PART. IT COULD HAVE BURST INTO FLAMES AND IGNITED THE UNUSED FUEL IN CYLINDER ONE KILLING ME AND MY CHILDREN. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO MY VEHICLE IT HAD ALREADY HAD THE PART REPLACED ONCE AND IT STARTED TO FAIL AGAIN AFTER I WAS THE UNLUCKY PERSON TO BUY IT. AFTER THE PURCHASE OF THIS VEHICLE, I HAVE REPLACED THE HEAD DUE TO A SAND LIKE MATERIAL THAT EATS AWAY THE HEAD GASKET. THIS MATERIAL IS A PRODUCT OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER CRUMBLING AND BEING SUCKED INTO THE ENGINES CYLINDERS. I HAVE REPLACED COUNTLESS SENSORS AND EVEN THE CARS COMPUTER TO TRY TO SOLVE THE ISSUE. AFTER FIXING THE ISSUE MYSELF AND REMOVING THE SUSPECT PART I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE. I AM VERY DISPLEASED WITH THE WAY NISSAN HAS CHOSEN TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUES THAT CONSUMERS OF THEIR PRODUCT HAVE. IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT SINCE THE DEALERSHIPS ARE PRIVATELY OWNED THEY CAN CHARGE FOR DIAGNOSIS EVEN IF IT IS TO VERIFY IF THE PREVIOUSLY RECALLED PART IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE RECALL. HAD IT NOT BEEN ELIGIBLE IT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY REPAIR ATTEMPTS MADE BY NISSAN. SO I FIXED IT MYSELF AND VOWED NEVER TO BUY ANOTHER NISSAN VEHICLE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-04-18
  • VIN: 3N1CB51D31L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED IN OKLAHOMA IN APRIL 2013, AND ALL THE DASH GAUGES QUIT ON THE WAY HOME, ALONG WITH THE ODOMETER GOING OUT. AFTER THE CAR COOLED DOWN, THE GAUGES/ODOMETER STARTED WORKING AGAIN. THE CAR WAS THEN DRIVEN CROSS COUNTRY TO WASHINGTON STATE, AND WHEN THE HEATER WAS TURNED ON, AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES, THE GAUGES/ODOMETER STOPPED WORKING AGAIN. ONCE COOLED OFF, THE GAUGES/ODOMETER WOULD START WORKING AGAIN. THE CAR WAS THEN DRIVEN TO TEXAS, AND THE SAME ISSUES CAME UP, ALL CENTERED AROUND TEMPERATURE. IT SEEMS WHEN THE HEATER IS TURNED ON (WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN WA), OR IF IT IS HOT OUTSIDE (THE DRIVE TO TEXAS, AND WHILE THE CAR HAS BEEN IN TEXAS), THE GAUGES WILL STOP WORKING AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME, AND WILL START WORKING AGAIN ONCE THE TEMPERATURE INSIDE THE CAR HAS COOLED DOWN. CURRENTLY WE ARE HAVING 100 DEGREE WEATHER DAYS IN TEXAS, SO IF THE CAR IS HOT WHEN LEAVING THE HOUSE, THE GAUGES WON'T WORK, UNTIL THE AC HAS BEEN ON ENOUGH TO COOL THE INSIDE OF THE CAR (AND I ASSUME GAUGES) DOWN. USING THE CAR AFTER THE AC HAS BEEN ON AND THE INSIDE OF THE CAR IS COOL, THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THE GAUGES. IF YOU TURN THE AC OFF AND ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN, ONCE THE HEAT BUILDS UP IN THE CAR (ABOUT 85 DEGREES OR SO), THE GAUGES WILL GO OFF AGAIN. *TR

  • Summary: IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS, I HAVE EXPERIENCE THE CAR SHUTTING DOWN WHEN THE CAR IS IDLE, AT A STOP, OR DURING MOVEMENT A LOW SPEEDS SUCH AS MAKING LEFT OR RIGHT TURN. I HAVE HAD DIFFERENT MECHANICS LOOKED AT THIS ISSUE, BUT NEITHER ONE WAS ABLE TO PIN POINT THE ISSUE. THEY HAVE RESET THE 'SERVICE ENGINE' LIGHT SO MANY TIMES, BUT THIS ISSUE KEEPS RETURNING. RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND A RECALL ON NISSAN SENTRA THAT SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE AS I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING (01V357 AND 03V455). I CALLED NISSAN FOR DETAILS ON THIS ISSUE AND THEY EXPLAINED THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT IN THE LIST OF RECALL VEHICLES. I FILED A CASE WITH NISSAN (CASE# 11305573) HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO BRING THIS ISSUE TO YOUR ATTENTION SINCE IT MIGHT CAUSE INJURIES TO OTHERS WHEN THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF WITHOUT WARNING. I BELIEVE MY VEHICLES WITH SIMILAR VIN SHOULD ALSO BE CHECKED FOR FAULTY ECU AND/OR WIRE SENSOR. *TR

Negative 2001 Nissan Sentra car reviews

I got it for my wife in September of 2001. I should have looked around more. There were two recalls and a rattling dashboard, but those were fixed. There were also numerous complaints about the A/C, but that was finally fixed. Unfortunately, we couldn't close the window at 70 miles per hour because of whistling for the rest of the trip. Additionally, the tires were gone after only 16000 miles. Overall, the craftsmanship was very poor.

  2. Nat Hodkiewicz 2024-10-22

After 3 recalls and repairs, the A/C going out twice, the gas pedal continually sticking even a few thousand miles after it is repaired, passenger window sticking, the CD player being intermitant and the buttons coming off the radio....AAGGHH! I think this car was made on a Monday.

This little car served me well for many years, with no major repairs needed until around 85,000 or 90,000 miles. After that point, I did have to invest in some repairs, such as replacing the catalytic converter for $800 and fixing a leak in the rear main seal for about $700. Additionally, the exhaust flex pipe needed to be replaced for $400. Unfortunately, there was another issue with the catalytic converter/oxygen sensors shortly after, which led me to decide it was time to move on. However, considering how little maintenance was required in the first eight years of ownership, I can't complain too much.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you that I bought my car in August of last year and have already put 12,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a terrible exhaust problem. According to the service department at the dealership, it's a design flaw. My car smells like rotten eggs 85% of the time. From what I understand, the engines were built for low sulphur gasoline (primarily sold in CA) and on other fuels (even high quality), the smell is unavoidable. It's really bothersome, but I'm hopeful that we can find a solution together. Thank you for your help!

A very good car overall! However, I've been having some trouble with a check engine light recently. The dealer's mechanics say it's a loose gas cap, which I could have believed once... but 5 times?! Basically, a day or two after I fill up with gas, the light comes on and must be reset. It's been quite a pain, and I'm seriously considering selling it. Other than that, I don't have any complaints, and it's been solid mechanically.

I finally traded this one in after 13 years, 135K, and minimal maintenance. The only non wear-and-tear type of repair I had to do was a replacement catalytic converter, which was about $500. It was such a great car to drive and I'll miss her dearly.

  2. Chase Parisian 2024-11-22

I'm so glad I found this great value car to replace my aging 1992 Honda Civic! I was originally planning on buying another Honda, but unfortunately, I didn't receive the best treatment from the dealers. Luckily, I found Nissan and was treated much better. Not only that, but I think this car is the best looking one in its class. The SE model offers more power, better handling, and brakes. I've noticed that some people have commented on the poor paint quality, but so far, I haven't had any issues with it.

  3. Brendon Schultz 2024-11-05

All it needs now is a turbo and the car will rock. The performance is awesome, with great handling and good interior design. SE models are the best there is for Sentras. I couldn't care less about Spec V and the rest. I haven't had any problems with my car, except when a small rock hit my windshield when I was behind a rig.

  4. Shawn Heidenreich 2024-10-16

I purchased my SE a year ago and have had mixed feelings about it. While it has some consistent issues such as squeaks, rattles, loose bumpers, and strange noises, which are unexpected from a 16k car, it still starts every day, runs well, and handles great. Additionally, it looks good, although the paint does seem to chip and scratch easily. I do wish that Nissan would acknowledge these common problems instead of the service team acting like I am the only one experiencing them. While it may not quite compare to my old Civic SI, it is still a great car in its own right.

  5. Tyrese Walker 2024-10-10

If you're searching for an affordable and dependable car with excellent gas mileage, look no further! The only thing you'll need to do is replace the Firestone tires with high-performance Yokohama tires. While they may be a bit pricey at around $100 per tire, it's like driving a completely different car. Additionally, I'm pleased to report that I'm getting 31 miles per gallon on the highway.
