2005 Nissan Sentra problems
The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.
In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.
The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2005 Nissan Sentra problems
The 2005 Nissan Sentra has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, airbags, and transmission.
- Airbag issues: There are 20 airbag complaints on file with the NHTSA, and 4 airbag recalls have been issued. Many of these complaints involve drivers waiting months for repairs or being turned away from dealers and forced to contact Nissan customer support.
- Transmission issues: Some drivers have reported internal transmission issues when their 2005 Nissan Sentra doesn't move or accelerate in any gear. This could be due to a broken axle or an internal transmission problem.
- Sunroof rattles and explodes: Nissan owners have reported sunroof rattles and explosions, which are believed to be due to a faulty tempering process for sunroofs since 2008.
- EVAP clogs and gas spills: Nissan owners have also reported 'gas splash back' at the pump, which is likely due to a clog in the EVAP system.
These common problems with the 2005 Nissan Sentra highlight the importance of checking the VIN when buying used and ensuring that any necessary repairs have been administered. - Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I PURCHASED MY 2005 NISSAN SENTRA FROM A PRIVATE SELLER IN 2007 WITH THE TOTAL MILEAGE OF 9,100. AFTER SIX MONTHS OF DRIVING THE SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON AND I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC WHOM I HAVE USED FOR ALL MY AUTOMOBILES. I WAS TOLD THE SEAL ON THE VAPOR HOSE WAS LOOSE AND HE COULD TIGHTEN IT, BUT IT WOULD ONLY BE A TEMPORARY FIX. THE COST TO REPAIR THE SEAL WAS OUT OF MY PRICE RANGE. SINCE 2007 THE SERVICE LIGHT ON MY DASH WOULD LIGHT UP INTERMITTENTLY WHETHER THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION OR STATIONARY. I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE LIGHT TO SWITCH OFF BEFORE I COULD GO FOR AN INSPECTION STICKER. A COUPLE OF TIMES THE INSPECTORS AT THE STATION TOLD ME OF THE VAPOR LEAK AND WERE NICE ENOUGH TO TIGHTEN THE SEAL TO THE VAPOR HOSE SO THE CAR COULD PASS INSPECTION. TO DATE THE SEAL ON THE VAPOR HOSE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT A FIRE HAZARD. IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT THE VIN ON THIS SPECIFIC 2005 NISSAN SENTRA DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN #05V269000 FOR THE FUEL TANK VAPOR HOSE. WHAT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND IS WHY THIS VEHICLE IS HAVING THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM. AND IT IS A PROBLEM. STARTED 01/07/2010

TOOK IT THE REPAIR SHOP AND THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED ME THAT ONE OF THE ENGINE CYLINDERS WASN'T FIRING AND IT WOULD COST 1600 TO REPAIR. MY COMPLAINT IS HOW CAN A VEHICLE THAT HAS BEEN SERVICED AT IT'S PROPER SERVICING INTERVALS AND UNDER 100 K MILES POSSIBLY HAVE ENGINE ISSUES. MY VEHICLE NOW OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY SITS IN MY DRIVEWAY COLLECTING DUST. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ONLINE AND HAVE COME TO THE UNDERSTANDING THAT MANY NISSAN SENTRA 05 OWNERS HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WHICH CLEARLY INDICATES FAULT FROM THE MANUFACTURER ( NISSAN). THIS WAS MY VERY FIRST BRAND NEW VEHICLE THAT I PURCHASED FROM NISSAN. I ALSO CURRENTLY PURCHASED A NISSAN MAXIMAL 09 WHICH I TOOK A LEAP OF FAITH THINKING I WAS GETTING A BETTER QUALITY VEHICLE IN COMPARISON TO THE SENTRA AND NOW THIS VEHICLE HAS STARTED ALSO STARTED TO GIVE ME PROBLEMS ( STEERING LOCK MODULE) ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART FROM THE MANUFACTURER. IN WHICH I HAD TO COME OUT OF POCKET $ 1000 TO FIX. THIS EXPERIENCE WITH NISSAN HAS LED ME TO HAVE A BAD TASTE IN MY MOUTH IN THE OVERALL QUALITY AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION OF NISSAN PRODUCTS. I WILL NOT BE A REPEAT CUSTOMER AND ADVISED ALL CAR BUYERS TO DO THEIR RESEARCH BEFORE MAKING A PURCHASE

2005 Nissan Sentra recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2005 Nissan Sentra.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain air bag inflator replacement service parts that may have been installed as part of a theft or collision repair. The parts include certain passenger-side air bag inflators designed to fit Infiniti 2002-2003 QX4, 2006-2010 M35 and M45; Nissan 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, and both driver and passenger-side inflators designed to fit 2007-2012 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback vehicles. Please see Nissan's recall report for the specific part numbers. These replacement inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the inflators as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 14, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Park It: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2002-2006 Sentra vehicles whose passenger air bags were previously inspected and may have been released without replacing the Takata air bag inflator. In the event of a crash, Takata frontal passenger air bag inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the repair has been completed. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will re-inspect the vehicle and, if necessary, replace the air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began January 22, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PM964.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.

Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.

This car is incredible! The low-end torque is the best. I've modded my spec and the car doesn't seem to mind. It runs very well and drives very hard. However, if you're looking for a 4-seater, this isn't the car for you as the back seat isn't that big. But overall, it's a fast car!

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It's great to hear that you bought a used car with only 3000 miles on it and have had no problems with it so far. Even at 50k miles, you've been diligent with your oil changes and it's paid off. While the car may not have the most power, it's great to hear that you're getting good gas mileage, especially on those long drives. It's also reassuring to know that the car always starts, even if it takes a couple of turns of the key. Thanks again for sharing your story with us!

I recently got a new Nissan Sentra to replace my old one that I had for 20 years. At first, I was really excited about the car. However, after a few months, I noticed that the seats were a bit too thin and I could feel the motor under the seat when using the automatic windows. Additionally, the suspension was the same as my old car, which made long drives quite tiring. The windows were also difficult to clean and would film up when the car was in the sun, but I was able to find a product that solved this issue for a few months. Despite these minor issues, I still enjoy driving my new Nissan Sentra.

I've owned dozens of cars, but this one has been the best by far. I bought it used with around 40,000 miles and it now has about 90,000. The only repairs I've had to make have been for wear-and-tear items like tires and batteries. It always starts up without any issues. I have the 5-speed stick shift and it has plenty of power, even with the A/C on, which, by the way, works very well. It also has power windows, power brakes, CD player, A/C, cruise control, remote trunk and mirrors - just enough gadgets to make it comfortable. While it's not a luxury car, it's really a great car for an econobox. I'm still driving it after almost nine years and it's showing some wear, but it still starts up without any issues. It handles great in snow and rain if you buy good tires. I've had to make some small repairs over the years, like brakes, tires, battery, one wheel bearing, alternator, and emission stuff. Most of the repairs I've done at home, with only a few in the shop. It's no Lexus, but it will probably run for at least a few more years. I didn't spend much on repairs or to buy the car. I recently sold it only because I had an opportunity to get something fancier at a very low cost. However, I'm confident that the Sentra will outlast my replacement vehicle. It has never leaked, never burned a drop of oil, never overheated, and always starts up without any issues. While it has a very Spartan interior and features, it's been a very economical and reliable car for me for over nine years.

I'm so glad I found this Sentra after my trusty '89 Taurus. It's affordable, compact, and sporty- everything I was looking for in a sedan. I've enjoyed driving it every time, even though the transmission can be a bit slick at times. I haven't had any problems with it since I bought it, and as far as I know, the previous owners didn't either. While it's not a luxury car, the audio system is superb, and it's a fun and simple little sedan. The gas mileage is quite decent, and the engine has plenty of torque. The handling is great, with abundant traction even though there is some body roll, and the brakes are excellent.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2005 Sentra SE that I purchased back in 2008. While I've had a few issues with it, I'm grateful that I got an extended warranty. It's helped me out a lot! I've had a few things break on the car that I didn't expect, like the head gasket at 38K and the motor mounts at 82K. I've also had some sensors fail, which caused the car to stall on the highway. It's been a bit of a challenge, but I'm still hanging in there. I'm hoping that things will start to look up soon. If you have any tips or advice, I'd love to hear them! Thanks for listening.

Overall, I think it's a decent car. That being said, I believe it has the potential to be excellent with a few upgrades. As someone who previously owned a Jetta, there are a few things I miss, such as Day Time Running Lights, automatic locking doors, and a comfortable interior.

Although the Sentra 1.8 Special seemed like a good choice for my upcoming commute when I bought it in April, I have unfortunately experienced several issues with the car. Despite having to take it to the shop five times in five months, the problems with the car, such as the lack of power, loose bumpers, loud exhaust, and gripping brakes, have not been resolved. As a result, I have decided to trade it back in for a Ford, which I have had better experiences with in the past. Thank you for your understanding.

This car has been problematic. The CD player is malfunctioning and the car is prone to overheating. Additionally, it has difficulty starting up. These issues make it unreliable for long distance travel.

Unfortunately, I received some disappointing news from Kraft Nissan in Tallahassee regarding my car. They informed me that the engine is irreparable, despite having replaced the head gasket and resealing it. After investigating the situation and reviewing the service order from the other company involved, it appears that the engine failure was due to a lack of durability in the 2005 Nissan Sentra model. While I am disappointed with the outcome, I believe it is important to note that this experience highlights the importance of thorough research before purchasing a vehicle. It is crucial to consider the reliability of the car and the quality of service provided by the dealership.
