2011 Nissan Sentra problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Sentra is a series of automobiles manufactured by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 1982. Since 1999, the Sentra has been categorized as a compact car, while previously it occupied the subcompact class. Until 2006, Sentra was a rebadged export version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny, but since the 2013 model year, Sentra is a rebadged export version of the Sylphy. The Sentra nameplate is not used in Japan. Many other countries in Latin America sell their versions of the Sunny as the Sentra. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were known as the Nissan Tsuru (Japanese for crane), and the B13 model was sold under that name until 2017, alongside the updated models badged as Sentra.

In North America, the Sentra currently serves as Nissan's compact car, despite being rated as a mid-size car by the EPA due to its interior volume since the 2007 model year. While previous Sentras were subcompacts, the Sentra has grown over the years, with the Nissan Versa having replaced the Sentra in the entry-level area.

The Sentra name was created for Nissan by Ira Bachrach of NameLab, and Bachrach describes the origin as "Nissan wanted consumers to understand that it was quite safe even though it was small. The word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety."

Common 2011 Nissan Sentra problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2011 Nissan Sentra, several common problems have been reported:

  • Transmission Issues: Some owners have experienced transmissions slipping while driving and engines stalling, although these problems are not very common. The 2011 model year has relatively few reported problems compared to other years, but it's essential to note that there have been complaints about transmission issues.
  • Recalls: The 2011 Nissan Sentra has two recalls related to electrical components failing, specifically the battery terminal cable and the battery cable harness. Failing to address these recalls can lead to damaging the electronic control module for the engine, which is costly to replace.
  • Safety Ratings: The 2011 Sentra received low safety ratings for its class, earning 4-stars overall in government crash tests, but only 3-star ratings in the frontal and side impact tests. This indicates a potential safety concern for owners of this vehicle.
  • Interior Space: One common complaint is the cramped cabin with very little rear passenger legroom, affecting the comfort of passengers in the back seats. This lack of space can be a drawback for those who prioritize interior comfort and roominess.
  • Fuel Economy: The 2011 Sentra's fuel economy is not as good as its competitors, ranking 6th in its class with a combined rating of up to 29 miles per gallon. This may be a consideration for buyers looking for a more fuel-efficient option.

These problems highlight some key issues that owners of the 2011 Nissan Sentra have faced, ranging from engine and transmission issues to safety concerns and interior comfort limitations.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-05
  • VIN: 3N1AB6AP9BL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was driving my car to work between 9 and 10pm on/around February 5, 2023. I lost control of my car and it couldn’t brake. I couldn’t have been hit if it was rush hour or ran into a car or someone. I turned to a around on the right to get out of traffic. The road had a little hill, I started to slide down the hill. I took my car to Nissan in Monroeville PA. When I picked my car back they had wrong VIN number and Year for my car. They said they scan the VIN not type it so the at wasn’t a typo. I am concerned that they said they changed codes and no main issues and mentioned some issues but the documentation was all wrong about a car with a VIN and Year that isn’t mine and under my family information. I am concerned about if my car is okay, and why Nissan gave me wrong VIN with two wrong errors in the numbers and letters and wrong year and they also might or might not have fixed problem. They said my car was 2008 but it’s 2011. I am concerned about if my car was fixed for the problem i took it on for and also if it was manipulated with old parts because it is not 2008. I went to the police in Monroeville PA they helped me find correct VIN. I bought my car at Subaru and they said my car VIN is as they said and is 2011. Did Nissan fix my car? I don't trust they did if documentation of VIN and Year are wrong, I’m now concerned about fraud possibilities. I took my car to Nissan Feb 15. It started to work fine on Feb 5 when I restarted it but I needed them to check why it didn’t work that night; until I restarted it. They said it might be coding which they fixed.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-17
  • VIN: 3N1AB6AP0BL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: BATTERY: CABLES - NISSAN SENTRA 2011 - MY CAR WAS RUNNING WELL FOR ALL THESE YEARS, NO PROBLEMS AT ALL, BUT ONE DAY, DIDN'T WANT TO START, IT DIDN'T MAKE NO NOISE, NOTHING. MY HUSBAND CHECKED THE BATTERY RIGHT AWAY, IT WAS A LITTLE BIT LOOSE AND HE ADJUSTED IT. THE CAR WANTED TO START BUT NEVER DID COMPLETELY. THE TOW GUY SAID IT LOOKED LIKE THE KEY WAS DEPROGRAMMED SO WE WERE HOPING IT WAS JUST THAT. SO WE TOWED THE CAR TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND FOUND OUT IT WAS THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. IT COSTED MORE THAN $2,000 DOLLARS TO GET IF FIXED. SEARCHING ONLINE I FOUND OUT THAT NISSAN SENTRA'S 2010-2011 HAVE A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. THE ARTICLE SAYS: (DUE TO A MACHINING IRREGULARITY, THE BOLT/WASHER SURFACE ON THE POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CABLE END MAY ALLOW FOR A GAP TO OCCUR IN THE CONTACT AREA OF THE TERMINAL. THIS CAN RESULT IN A VOLTAGE DROP THAT MAY CAUSE DIFFICULTY STARTING THE VEHICLE AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR! WE TALKED TO THE NISSAN MANAGER ABOUT IT, BUT HE DIDN'T HONOR THE RECALL, SINCE MY CAR DOESN'T HAVE THIS RECALL WHEN I APPLY THE VIN#. HE GAVE US A PHONE # TO CALL: 1800 NISSAN1, SO I HOPE THEY CAN REIMBURSE THE MONEY WE PAID FOR IT. PLEASE, IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM LIKE THIS, REPORT IT, SO THEY CAN SEE THERE IS MORE VEHICLES AFFECTED THAT DON'T QUALIFY FOR THIS RECALL AND I DON'T THINK IT'S FAIR BECAUSE IT IS A MANUFACTURE ISSUE. THANK YOU!

  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY INTERSTATE CAR STARTED BUCKING AND NOT ACCELERATING WHEN I PUT FOOT ON GAS. I WAS ALONE AND IT WAS DARK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. I WAS SO SCARED. IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I SAW A VDC LIGHT WAS ON AND THAT HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. I CHECKED THE DASHBOARD AND SAW THE VDC BUTTON AND TRIED PRESSING IT AND NOTHING HELPED. WHEN I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO PULL OVER ON THE SHOULDER, VERY UPSET, I LOOKED ONLINE ON MY PHONE AND SOMEONE RECOMMENDED TO TURN CAR OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN RESTART IT. THAT SEEMED TO HELP SO I WENT ON MY WAY. I SEE MANY OTHERS SAYING THEY HAVE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN. MAYBE THIS SHOULD BE SERIOUSLY LOOKED INTO AND POSSIBLY A RECALL ON IT.2018

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-10-09
  • VIN: 3N1AB6AP1BL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY NISSAN SENTRA 2011 WITH AN APPROX SPEED OF 35 MPH AND THEN SUDDENLY HEARD SOME NOISE FROM THE BONNET. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE CAR BUT STILL ABLE TO HEAR SOUND COMING FROM THE ABS MODULE. I TOOK IT TO MECHANIC AND HE SUGGESTED TO CHECK FOR THE RECALL AS LIGHT FOR VDC,ABS & BRAKE TURNED ON. I CHECKED WITH NISSAN CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY SAID THEY DONT HAVE ANY INFORMATION WITH MY VIN# FOR ANY RECALL. I AM SURPRISED TO SEE THIS AS THE CAR DIDNT MEET ANY ACCIDENT WHEN ALL THIS HAPPEN. NISSAN AUTHORISED CENTER DID DIAGNOSTIC AFTER CHARGING $244 JUST TO COME OUT THAT ABS ACTUATOR(47660-9AA1A) NEED TO BE REPLACED WHICH WILL FURTHER COST ME ABOUT $1900. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO COVER UP THIS COST AS THIS SEEMS TO BE COMPLETELY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE UNDER A CAMPAIGN.

STRUCTURE,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-09-22
  • Number Of Injuries: 1

  • VIN: 3N1AB6AP0BL
  • Components: STRUCTURE,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ON SUNDAY, SEPT 22 2019 AT AROUND 1:40PM WE WERE HEADED HOME FROM AN VACATION AT A CABIN RENTAL PROPERTY IN SEVIERVILLE, TN. NOT EVEN QUARTER MILE FROM OUR CABIN ON A STRAIGHT AND DOWN HILL ROAD ALL OF A SUDDEN THE BRAKES STOPPED FUNCTIONING. I APPLIED BRAKES MULTIPLE TIMES BUT THE CAR DIDN'T STOP AND IN ORDER TO AVOID A SMALL POND ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE AND THE CAR IN FRONT I HAD TO DIVERT MY CAR ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. AS I HIT SHOULDER OF THE ROAD THE FRONT PASSENGER WHEEL BUSTED AND THE CAR EVENTUALLY STOPPED FURTHER AT THE UP HILL. I DON'T KNOW IF THE BRAKES FAILED AND/OR THE ABS AND/OR THE ONBOARD COMPUTER MALFUNCTIONED. I DID SEE ABS AND VDC LIGHTS SIGN COMING ON THE DASHBOARD FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS BEFORE DISAPPEARING ON ITS OWN. ALSO SINCE THEN THE TIRE PRESSURE SIGN HAS NEVER GONE OFF. THE TIRE PRESSURE SIGNS BLINKS FOR A LITTLE WHILE EVERY TIME START THE CAR AND THEN GETS STEADY. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN SAFETY CONCERN TO ME AS I STILL CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW WOULD THE CAR DO NOTHING EVEN AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKES SO MANY TIMES. WITH AN 2011 MODEL AND ONLY 56000 MILES ON IT I WOULD NEVER EXPECT SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN. SO SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR NOW AS WE HAVE AN TWO YEAR OLD WHO WAS IN THE CAR AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT & MY WIFE GOT AN MINOR INJURY TO HER LEFT ELBOW. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO NISSAN BY CALLING 800-647-7261 ON SEPT 24 2019 AND HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING BACK FROM THEM SINCE THAN.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-05
  • VIN: 3N1AB6AP2BL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: "TAKATA RECALL", CAR HAS DAYS WHERE IT WON'T START DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH THE ECM MODULE. I BOUGHT THE CAR LIKE THAT AND WHEN IT HAPPENED I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BATTERY AND WE SWITCHED OUT THE BATTERY, HOWEVER A MONTH LATER IT DID THE SAME THING. I NOTICED THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THE BATTERY TERMINAL THAT MAY EFFECT THE ECM ON SOME MODERN VEHICLES, HOWEVER WHEN I TOOK IT TO NISSAN THEY SAID BASED ON MY VIN NUMBER MY VEHICLE ISN'T AFFECTED. MY CAR IS DOING EXACTLY WHAT THE RECALL STATES, SO I BELIEVE THAT MY VIN NUMBER NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL LIST.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-11
  • VIN: 3N1AB6AP6BL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: ALL IGNITION COILS AND SPARK PLUGS ARE FAILING AFTER 2 MONTHS OF BEING REPLACED. $700 WAS PAID BACK ON MAY 20, 2019 TO REPLACE ALL COILS AND SPARK PLUGS. ENGINE MISFIRED AGAIN THE OTHER DAY AND SAME ISSUE DIAGNOSED WITH COIL/PLUG FAILURE! THERE IS AN UNDERLYING ISSUE THAT NISSAN NEEDS TO HAVE ADDRESSED WITHIN ENGINE AS SOMETHING IS CAUSING THE COILS TO CONTINUALLY MISFIRE! MY CAR WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT THE OTHER DAY ON SUNDAY WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO BUCK WILDLY AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHING ON.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-07
  • VIN: 3N1AB6AP4BL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: WE PUT OUR VIN INTO THE RECALL DATABASE AND IT DID NOT COME BACK AS BEING ONE OF THE CARS AFFECTED. HOWEVER, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED WHAT IS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL: ENGINE STALLING AND HAVING TO BE TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED; NO POWER TO ENGINE WHEN STEPPING ON GAS WHILE IN DRIVE. IT HAS BEEN OKAY ON THE HIGHWAY, BUT WILL OFTEN CUT OUT WHEN DRIVING IN CITY, ESPECIALLY WHEN STARTING BACK FROM A START OR ROLLING START. HAPPENS OCCASIONALLY WITH NO PREDICTABILITY OTHER THAN HAS NEVER HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY.

Negative 2011 Nissan Sentra car reviews

  1. Enos O'Conner 2024-11-18

I really wanted to love this car, but unfortunately, my experience with it has been quite disappointing. I purchased it used and have had some issues with jerking that have made it almost undrivable. Despite replacing the air mass sensor, the problem persisted and it's possible that the transmission is to blame. I would advise others to stay away from this car.

  2. Marc Goodwin 2024-10-05

The anti-theft symbol may cause the rear wheels to lock, but this car starts up immediately. The hesitation before startup may be due to a worn key or another issue. However, I am confident that the problem can be resolved with proper diagnosis and repair.

  3. Casper Gorczany 2024-09-14

On October 31, 2010, I purchased a Nissan Sentra. Despite driving at less than 20 miles per hour, I noticed a jerking sound coming from the engine compartment. I took the car to the dealership five times in less than a week, but unfortunately, they were unable to detect anything. As a result, I had to downgrade from a brand new Nissan Sentra 2011 to a 2010 model. Interestingly, the Nissan Owners Manual acknowledges the same situation, attributing it to the ABS system performing a self-check. Although it is concerning that the vehicle was not fully secure, I appreciate that Nissan has provided an explanation for the issue. While I was disappointed with my experience, I remain confident in Nissan's commitment to quality and safety.

I had a bit of trouble with my Nissan recently. The oil pump stopped working after only 106k miles, and I needed a special tool designed by Nissan to fix it. Unfortunately, when I went to the dealer, they wouldn't sell me the tool or even the socket I needed to do the work myself. Despite this setback, I was able to fix the issue on my own. It's frustrating to hear that other people on YouTube are having the same problem, but I still believe that Nissan makes good cars. Of course, there are plenty of other great used cars out there too!

I purchased three new Nissan vehicles, but unfortunately, the engine of my Sentra failed at 66,000 miles. Despite having all oil change records and taking good care of the vehicle, Nissan refused to help because it was 6,000 miles out of warranty. However, I took the initiative to get it diagnosed and fixed. Although it was a frustrating experience, I was able to find a used engine for $2,000. While there were some issues with the used engine, I am still disappointed with Nissan's lack of support for a loyal customer. Despite this setback, I remain confident in my ability to handle any future car issues with the same level of determination and resourcefulness.

I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your car! It's interesting to hear that your wife was sold on it compared to the Corolla after seeing your relative's 2008. The car seems to be quite roomy and fuel-efficient, which is great. Although the CVT may be unusual at first, it's good to hear that you've grown to like it.

  2. Shaun Herman 2024-11-08

In very cold weather, the CVT transmission can make the car go very slow until it warms up. I understand how frustrating this can be. However, after warm-up, the car runs just fine. I paid about $18000 for the car, which was about $2000 more than usual due to Japan's problem with nuclear power plants. Despite this, I still believe it was a good deal.

I wasn't originally looking for this make or model, but I ended up purchasing a 2011 Nissan Sentra in 2020 with just over 80,000 miles for $6000. The dealer recommended it over a different make, and I'm so glad I listened because the stereo is amazing! Not only does it have great sound and display, but the handling is awesome, it's roomy, and it has excellent gas mileage. I'm currently getting its first tune-up and I'm happy to report that the vehicle seems to fix itself when the engine light appears (diagnostics are saying unbalanced air and gas mixture). Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this basic Nissan Sentra.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2011 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. It's been a great little car for me, with plenty of room for four passengers (or five if necessary). The power is good and the clutch is easy to use. I really like the styling and performance of this little pocket rocket! It's also well-equipped with navigation, a sunroof, helical limited slip, alloy wheels, a Fosgate sound system, a 6-speed manual transmission, and 200 hp - it's pretty quick! Overall, I think it's an excellent value.
